2014 Running with the Bulls Night Parade
Rules & Guidelines

Registration deadline is Monday, September 22nd, 2014 at 5:00 pm.
Late registrations will not be accepted!
All student teams competing for the SuperBull Award must have a
homemade float in order to be eligible for points from the parade.
On the day of parade the driver of the vehicle MUST sign a waiver
identifying that he/she possesses adequate liability insurance coverage.
Dear Prospective Parade Participant:
The University of South Florida invites you/your organization to participate in the 2014
Homecoming Parade. The parade is scheduled for Friday, October 10th, 2014. This year’s
theme is “Once Upon a Homecoming”. Each entrant is responsible for securing their own
parade mobility. Signs and/or banners are also the responsibility of the entrant. Parade entries
are welcome to pass out your organization’s promotional items and/or candy along the parade
route. These items must be indicated on the parade application and approved by the
Traditions Parade Director.
The Parade will begin at 7:00 PM on the University of South Florida campus in the
Theatre Arts Parking lot. Driving north on Bruce B. Downs Blvd., take a right on USF Holly
Drive, another right on USF Maple Drive, and finally take a left on USF Alumni Drive. All entries
must be submitted electronically via submission link here by Monday, September 22nd, 2014
at 5:00 PM for consideration of acceptance into the Homecoming Parade. Your entry will be
confirmed via email upon receipt of your registration form. Parade registration, staging and
disbanding locations, map and additional information will be sent to the entry’s contact
person.
Please carefully review all parade rules and regulations. There will be a reminder email
with all the information you need regarding the parade. Should you have any questions,

2014 Parade Rules and Regulations
1. All participants must turn in the official entry form. All applicants are subject to review by the Homecoming
Executive Board. Those who do not turn in an application are not eligible to participate. Parade applications
must be received only online here no later than 5:00 PM on Monday September 22nd, 2014. Submission are
time stamped and will not be accepted if submitted after this deadline; there will be NO EXCEPTIONS.
2. On the day of Parade the driver of the vehicle MUST sign a waiver identifying that he/she posseses adequate
liability insurance coverage.
3. Both homemade and professional floats are eligible for parade competition. The Campus Tradition’s Board
description of “Homemade” floats refers to floats that are not purchased by any float company (i.e. Festive
Floats). All student floats that are homemade (not purchased) will be entered into the float competition. If your
float is signed up for the Team Competition (part of a larger competition throughout the entire week of
Homecoming), please see the Team Competition Guidelines here for more information.
4. All entries must arrive at the staging area no later than 6:00 PM on Friday, September 22nd, 2014, and may
arrive as early as 12:00 PM. Parade entries that arrive after 6:00 PM will not be allowed to participate in the
parade and will be disqualified from the competition. The parade will begin promptly at 7:00 PM. All official
times will be determined by the “Homecoming Clock” provided on site.
5. All participating entries are expected to adhere to the legal safety limit of passengers per float as set forth by
the State of Florida. University of South Florida Administration and Homecoming Steering Committee reserve
the right to limit the amount of participants per float for the safety of the parade participants and spectators.
6. Due to safety, once the parade has begun, individuals may not leave his/her parade entry until the parade
route has been completed.
7. The Homecoming theme is, “Once upon a Homecoming”. Please incorporate the theme on your float and make
it visible as well (i.e. banner displayed).
8. Due to the nature of the Homecoming Parade being a night parade, entries are REQUIRED to incorporate lights
on their float to increase visibility for parade watchers. Sunset is anticipated to occur during parade.
9. Firearms, pyrotechnics, fire and fireworks are strictly PROHIBITED from any part of the parade, due to the
concern for safety of all participants and audience members. Violation of this rule will result in immediate
disqualification of the entry, and the Homecoming Executive Board will also notify Student Rights and
Responsibilities and the University Police Department.
10. Profanity or obscenities on the float will result in disqualification, as determined by the Homecoming Parade
Director and Advisor. If you choose to use the East Carolina logo, please do so in good taste.
11. Entries are encouraged to display the sponsoring business, organization, and/or group name.
12. The consumption of alcoholic beverages and/or the use of illegal drugs prior to the parade, in the staging area,
or on the parade route will not be tolerated. Individuals and/or team will be disqualified from participation in
the parade. In addition, smoking is not permitted in the staging area and/or the parade route. The
Homecoming Executive Board will also notify Student Rights and Responsibilities and the University Police
Department.
13. Any individual not associated with a parade entry will not be permitted in the staging area. All performances
should only occur after the parade has begun in order to be considered in the overall score for the entry. Any
entry members who are at the staging site and are not associated with your group will be asked to leave. The
Homecoming Executive Board reserves the right to request anyone to leave the staging area.
14. Parade entries are encouraged to provide safe items (i.e. non heavy or sharp) which can be handed out along
the parade route (i.e. Beads, candy). Only items listed on your application that have been approved will be
permitted.
15. Floats are restricted to 13ft in height from the ground due to potential interference with property such as
power lines, trees, and tree branches. Only one vehicle may pull a float, no other vehicles may accompany
the entry.

Float Competition
1. Only one entry per organization is eligible for the parade competition judging. Organizations are eligible to
include more than one entry but only one will be judged.
2. Floats competing in the parade competition must be constructed prior to 6:00 PM on Friday, October 10th,
2014. Construction of the floats on University property must abide by all University rules.
3. The team competition card must be displayed on the right and left side of the float. Failure to do so will
disqualify the team in the parade competition.
4. There will be a First, Second and Third place awarded to the entries with the highest total score. The floats
will be judged on the following criteria:

Originality and Creativity 5pts
Original idea, attractiveness, overall impact

Theme 5pts
Consideration of the 2014 USF Homecoming theme “Once upon a Homecoming”

Design and Construction 5pts
Everything is adequately secured to the float, high quality construction, and creative use of
materials and coverage of float

Green and Gold Spirit 5pts
Enthusiasm, corporation of USF spirit, and rule abidance (i.e. proper lighting, theme displayed
Your float will be judged in the parking lot prior to the beginning of the parade for originality & creativity,
theme, and design & construction. Your float will be judged for Green and Gold Spirit along the parade
route.
