The DHS Herald 1 0 Octo ber 20 14 Is su e 33 /20 14 D u rb a n H i g h Sch o o l H ea d Ma ste r : Leo n E r asm u s From the Head Master’s Desk We have come to the end of another busy and successful term. On all fronts we have made our mark and the boys have done us proud. Some highlights of the term included the Cobham Leadership Camp, Matric Dance, appointment of new RCL and Prefects, Sports’ Day, Sports’ Dinners, Sports’ fixtures and Music evenings to name a few. They all involved Educators, learners and Parents working long hours to make it all happen and for that I want to thank everyone involved. We have boys travelling to places as far as Cape Town and Bloemfontein to represent the school. We are involved in Cricket, Water Polo, Basketball, Football and Climbing. When we get back next term, all these sports as well as some other will play fixtures in the first week already. There is no time for a breather and I meant what I said a few times. A good school is a busy school. I want parents to go through the academic reports this holiday and take note of areas of concern so that they can be addressed. Next term is short and before you know it, the final examinations are upon us. I attended the relays at Kings Park last night. DHS did extremely well winning the U15 and U19 age groups and finishing 3rd in the U17 age group. We also won the competition overall and this was against some of top schools in the province. Well done boys! L M Erasmus 14 Head Master th DHS U16 Water Polo Tournament DHS is excited to be hosting its third U16 Water Polo Tournament from 10-12 October. It is the only U16 Water Polo tournament for boys in the country and is quickly becoming established as one of the country’s prestigious school age-group tournaments. DHS initiated this tournament with a “friendly” in its inaugural year in 2012 and with seven schools participating last year. However, this year DHS is proud to announce the Tournament has grown significantly, with 16 schools from around the country participating. Local teams include DHS, Clifton, Westville, Glenwood and Northwood. Grey Bloem, KES, St David’s, Affies and Selbourne are some of the travelling schools who will be taking advantage of the updated and refurbished Boarding Establishment. We anticipate three action packed days with all the teams vying for the top spot and the winning trophy. To follow the games and get the results in real time, the URL for the Durban High School U16 Tournament from 10 October to 12 October is: http://www.mycomlink.co.za/event. php?i=6546 We hope everyone involved enjoys the warm hospitality and weather Durban has to offer. The DHS community is invited to attend the Tournament and support the boys. We look forward to welcoming you. Each moment that we spent in our new “home” gave us enough time or so I thought to adapt to everything. So far so good .... The second day was amazing as we went horse riding and target shooting. I have never felt more alive than at the moment the horse charged and the wind sang its praise. The nights, however, was a different story. It was bitterly cold and it was really hard to breathe, but with the support of my group I pulled through the night. By the third day it had become too much for me and my spirit finally broke and I could not take it anymore. I had to go home!! It was just going to get worse. It seemed that I was not the only one wanting out of this situation. Mrs Nagiah and Mr Dufourq helped us get over that hurdle. Boys don’t cry is a really stupid rule. You will be amazed what a good cry can do for two boys desperately wanting to go and embrace the comfort of home instead of “suffering” in the middle of nowhere. Thank god our teachers know what is good for us. Having KFC that night after our hard work at the Clouds of Hope Orphanage definitely improved our spirits! On the fourth day we began to tackle the mountain. The first hour or so was easy since our HIP 2 B2 Congratulations to Sulakhe Nhassengo and Tiaan de Jager of Grade 10 for being selected to go through to the final announcing of the Hip 2 B2 SA Young Innovator of the Year on 16 October with their project Solar Oxygen manufacturing apparatus. group was talking non-stop, and we loved it. We got to experience the sunset and sunrise everyday and marvelled at the rock paintings at Pinnacle Rock. The one of the witch doctor clearly resembled Mrs Nagiah when she yells at us. We all had a good laugh and she had to agree that it actually could have been her!! Luckily she has a good sense of humour or else we would have all been given a detention! I was glad I did not lose out on getting to spend the night at a beautiful fountain with a view that no picture can do justice to. We are all extremely lucky. The sixth day saw us journeying back to base camp with new friendship forged, all bound forever and strengthened by the hardship we endured and conquered. The last day was ours to relax and reflect on all that we had been through. Coming to terms with our true limits as well as the harsh truth that we do not always know what is best for us. I realised that in order to make us strong, we had to be broken first. Eventually the time came to say goodbye. For some it was a learning curve to see what we were really made off, for others it was enlightening as it is a surprise discovering who the true leaders are - it is usually the people you would never expect. The proudest moment for me was going back home a man! They will fly to Johannesburg on 12 October 2014 and spend two days at VUT to work on their prototypes, one day at 3M for presentations and then on the 16th they will participate in final presentation to the judges. We wish them well and know that they will make us proud Page 2 of 5 The DHS Herald Durban High School Hockey Dinner and Awards Evening The Annual Hockey Dinner and Awards Evening took place on 30 September 1st and 2nd Team Hockey Award Winners with Guest Speaker, Gowan Jones (front left) and 1st Team Coach Brett Clay (right) The guest speaker was Gowan Jones who is a goal keeper in the National Squad for SA Hockey. DHS was up against Westville Boys’ Kloof, Northlands Girls’ and Kingsway. Seven DHS boys, Zia Cassim, David Christopher, Kaylan Nathulal, Advik Beni, Nadiem Barnwell, Junaid Ally and Cameron Murugan, worked hard in the weeks leading up to the event creating a masterpiece of fun, colourful, bold, bright and individual interpretations of what Durban is all about on a large canvas, sponsored by Shave Paint and Décor. DHS turned out the most creative mural, applying the brief well, and won R5000 worth of paint from Shaves. “I was really excited when we were announced as the winners. These past 3 weeks have been difficult for as we worked out of school hours which resulted in many after hour sessions, including weekends, to complete the mural. I am very proud of our boys as they really put their hearts and souls into the mural,” said Nirvana Kusial (Subject Head of Creative Arts). The DHS Herald Congratulations!
