INTRODUCTION
MoU on ASEAN Cooperation in Agriculture and Forest Products Promotion Scheme is
intended to strengthen partnerships among ASEAN countries in promoting competitive
advantage of agricultural products, fisheries and forestry through negotiation, collective
bargaining, the formulation of issues of common and comprehensive partnership. Under the
MoU, Indonesia got the mandate as the lead country in the commodity tuna, pepper and
tea.
ASEAN Tuna Working Group (ATWG) is agreed under the cooperation of ASEAN Agriculture
and Forest Product Promotion Scheme (AFPPS). ATWG has conducted 4 times annual
meeting in Jakarta (Indonesia), Yogyakarta (Indonesia), Nha Trang (Vietnam), and Bangkok
(Thailand). A number of recommendations as the results of ATWG meetings provide the
opportunity to be followed up, particularly on the importance of tuna fisheries sustainability
in the region since it is linked with trade related issues from importing countries, i.e. reliable
and accurate catch data as well as eco-label requirements. The meetings also consider the
enhancing intra-regional trade for tuna would be high priority future program in order to
strengthen supply and value chain among ASEAN Member States.
The most fundamental problems in the current commodity trading tuna trade is a matter of
sustainability. Increasingly depleted tuna stocks, is along with diminishing catches from year
to year. The condition occurs due to excessive fishing practices, destructive and illegal.
Indonesia confirmed that the eradication of the problem of illegal fishing in Southeast Asia
requires the support and commitment among the ASEAN countries. Joint action among
ASEAN countries will support efforts to maintain the sustainability of ecosystem restoration
and tuna catches.
Indonesia initiates to develop ASEAN Tuna Ecolabelling (ATEL) as a tool of ensuring ASEAN
tuna sustainability and an answer to international market demand for sustainable
measurement. The 5th meeting of ATWG will discuss and finalize the mechanism of ATEL
implementation in ASEAN region and how to encourage international market to accept the
ATEL Certification.
The 5th meeting of ATWG will be preceded by the 1st ASEAN Task Force on Tuna (ATF)
Meeting as a forum especially for private sectors related to tuna industries to share any
issues faced in the struggling international market. Hopefully the ATF meeting will be useful
and optimally utilized by private sectors in ASEAN region to strengthen the cooperation
among ASEAN Member States (AMS) and bargaining position of ASEAN tuna in international
market.

Nusa Dua, Bali At a Glance
Nusa Dua is known as an enclave of large international 5-star resorts in southern part
of Bali. It is located 22 kilometres from Denpasar, the provincial capital of Bali, and
administered under Kuta South District. Nusa Dua means two islands (nusa 'island', dua
'two'), because there are 2 islands in bay of Bali Tourism Development Corporation
area, in the southern side lays Peninsula Island and the northern side lays Nusa Dharma
Island which it is smaller, but has Pura/Temple Nusa Dharma and shadier.
As well as a host of luxury hotels, Nusa Dua is home to the most popular golf course in
Bali and the main convention centre on the island. The beaches here are glorious white sand, deep, long and safe for swimming. The public beach at Geger is the best to
head to if you are not staying at Nusa Dua. This is also home to one of the best
museums in Bali. The museum is nearly always empty.
The Nusa Dua enclave has three manned gates and everyone entering is subject to a
security search. This can have a slightly claustrophobic effect according to some points
of view, and in other points of view makes guests feel more secure. While some may
criticize this for creating the sense of an "artificial location", given the prior acts of
terrorism in Bali some guests do appreciate the fact that security checks are made to
enhance their safety.
