Greetings:
The above quotation says so much about what a real education should be.
Often we look at education as an exterior force that dumps information and wisdom inside of us but a true education also teaches us to be brave enough to not let
yourself be the person that stops you. The force of personal will and determination is a key component to future success in one’s education and life in general.
There are wonderful things taking place at our school and as usual I
strongly encourage your involvement and participation. With our Open House
scheduled for October 2nd, you have the opportunity to see the school and learn
about aspects of it that you may not have exposure to, please come out at 6pm.
Sometime in November we will be cutting the ribbon on the Numann Technology
Center, located in the lower floor of our school. The Numann Center is a unique
partnership between RCS and the Greater Roxbury Learning Initiative Corporation. This facility with have a school and community component as it will benefit
our children during the school day and the community during off-hours. When we
set the date for this wonderful celebration a more formal announcement shall follow.
Beyond these highlights we are entering into a time when summer time
has transitioned into school time. The routines are being set and the expectations
are beginning to be clearly understood. The academic challenges we continue to
face through the curricular expectations being delivered to us by NYS are many
and your help and cooperation is needed. The school year can fly by quickly and
as it does do not delay addressing any of the questions or concerns you may have
because before we know it 2015 will be here. Partnership is the word that describes this productive relationship with student success as the primary goal. Enjoy this colorful autumn season. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any
questions or concerns you may have throughout the year.
Sincerely,
Thomas J. O’Brien, Superintendent

ROXBURY CENTRAL SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
Principal’s Message
Hello All!
The changing of the leaves across the mountains of our neighborhoods has been spectacular to watch. Hopefully the nice weather will
stay with us just a bit longer before many begin to prepare for what
hopes to be an amazing ski season. I wish you and your family a beautiful Autumn.
This newsletter provides an opportunity to remind our community and parents of some yearly housekeeping. I would like to call your
attention once again to the following: 1) Teacher Effectiveness Composite Scores have been issued to each of the teachers and me. You have
rights to this information and you may request the score of any teacher
of whom your child is currently enrolled. 2) We recently sent a test call
for our informational and emergency communication system: One Call
Now. During open house, please take the opportunity to add emergency
contacts to our call list. The system will call up to five numbers for each
student unless someone is reached. 3) Our open house format is changing! In the past we have held a fair style open house in the gymnasium.
This year, teachers will return to their classes and parents and students
will be able to walk through the school to visit each classroom.
Open house is a great time to ask important questions pertaining
to the core curriculum, state assessments and what it means to be college
and career ready. I also encourage parents to ask questions regarding
each teacher’s bullying and harassment protocols, methods of communication and thoughts on technology integration. Ask your teachers the
following:
What is different about what my child is learning?
How do I report concerns that my child is being bullied?
What are the ways in which my child will use technology this year?
What are the growth targets set for my child this year?
To assist parents in becoming more familiar with curriculum
changes, Common Core resources are available for parents and
can be found at http://engageny.org/parent-and-family-resources .
I encourage each parent to read the available materials and to
come to open house with your thoughts, comments and concerns.
Together, we will work to see that each of our children reach
their highest potential. Please do not hesitate to call and I look
forward to seeing you at open house in a few days.
All the best,
-Eric Windover

Attendance News
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly.
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Even as children grow older and more independent,
families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why
attendance is so important for success in school and in life.
We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances.
But, we also know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can
cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent—which means missing 18 or more days over the course of an entire school year. Research shows:
 Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade
level by the end of 3rd grade.
 By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping
out of school.
By 9th grade good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores.
Absences can add up quickly. A child is chronically absent if he or she misses just two days
every month!!
Clearly going to school regularly matters!
We don’t want your child to fall behind in school and get discouraged. Please ensure that
your child attends school every day and arrives on time. Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:
 Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.
 Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
 Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are truly sick
 Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
 Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.
Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school.
Let us know how we can best support you and your children so that they can show up for
school on time every day. We want your child to be successful in school! If you have any questions or need more information please contact your child’s school.
Sincerely,
Jo Hinkley
Dean of Students
Attendance Officer
