After a horrific car accident that almost took their son William’s life they purchased a 30 acres farm in the foothills of Hiddenite, NC. The farm became a family recover center where their son recovered from a severe TBI and 6 strokes. Today the farm is a Retreat Lodge where families come to deal with heart issues that are associated with caring for a love one with a TBI as well as observing and learning how to develop their own family based recovery program. Denise has authored several books, and travels frequently as a conference speaker. Denise just completed a TBI Emotional Recover Manual along with coauthor Debbie Leonhardt. The manual is a step by step manual for emotional recovery based on the Boggs success story of their son’s recovery and Debbie Leonhardt’s own 20 year journey of TBI recovery. Denise and Lee have been married for 35 years and have 3 wonderful children, Crystal (married to Jon), Casey (married to Zach), and William, and four grandsons. Presentation Title: The Balancing Act of mTBI: Vestibular & Ocular Rehabilitation (Co-Presenter - CAPT Henry McMillan) Presentation Description: Vestibular Rehabilitation Summary: Physical complications often present in service members following a mild traumatic brain injury/concussion. These symptoms can include dizziness, impaired balance, poor postural control, coordination issues, vision dysfunction and the inability to recover exertional capabilities. Vestibular evaluations following a concussion are utilized to objectively identify these impairments, develop an appropriate treatment plan in conjunction with other members of a multidisciplinary treatment team, and ultimately return each soldier back to active duty without any restrictions and performing at the level of a high class athlete. Vision Rehab Lecture Summary: Symptoms of Post Trauma Vision Syndrome can include: Blurred vision, double vision, light sensitivity, reading problems, poor reading comprehension, limited attention or concentration, poor spatial judgment, impaired depth perception, loss of peripheral vision, poor visual memory, and headaches with visual tasks. These hidden visual problems can also affect balance, coordination and cognitive function. Patients may have poor eye-hand coordination or problems judging stairs. Driving may become difficult and motion may cause the patient to feel ill. Visual fatigue is common symptom. Optometrists can diagnose and treat visual processing problems that appear after brain injury. They can work closely with a rehabilitation team such as occupational, physical and speech therapists to help the patient recover from brain injury. Vision Rehabilitation Treatment can include: Eyeglasses or contact lenses to improve eyesight, bifocal eyeglasses for better focus flexibility and reading, lenses to expand peripheral awareness, specialized filters to eliminate double vision or light sensitivity, and prism lenses to improve spatial orientation. The goal of vision rehabilitation treatment is to maximize recovery. Alan G. Presentation Title: The Balancing Act of mTBI: Vestibular & Ocular Rehabilitation (Co-Presenter - CPT Jasmin Filpo) Presentation Description: See Co-Presenter, CPT Jasmin Filpo Section for Description Connie C. Mele MSN, RN, LCAS, PMHCNS-BC, CARN-AP Director of Provided Services for Mecklenburg County The Carlton G. Watkins Center Bio: Connie has worked the field of substance abuse since 1979. She has held various job positions in the field of addictions, from a staff nurse in a Methadone Clinic, a Director of Nursing at an inpatient treatment facility, to implementing a new inpatient program, and an outpatient behavioral health clinic. She has spent the last thirteen years in the Public Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Disabilities system. In her role as Program Administrator for Substance Abuse Services for Mecklenburg County, she was successful in obtaining a $1.5 million grant from SAMHSA (Substance Abuse, Mental Health Services Administration) to implement an integrated treatment program. This program treats those clients who are suffering from severe and persistent mental illness as well as substance abuse. She is currently the Director of the Provided Services Organization of Mecklenburg County. She assisted with the development of a SAMHSA grant for Jail Diversion of Veterans who have PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and/ or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). She is working with the state of North Carolina on a SAMHSA grant that they received to educate substance abuse providers how to screen for Traumatic Brain Injuries and how to adjust substance abuse treatment services if the person has a TBI. She is also currently working on a grant that will integrate the care of people who have substance abuse, mental health and chronic health issues. The North Carolina Governor’s Institute has asked her to work on the development of a curriculum to be offered in all nursing schools on how to deal effectively with the addicted patient. Presentation Title: How to Deal Effectively with the TBI Patient that has a Substance Use Disorder Presentation Description: It is doubly challenging to deal with a patient who has a TBI and a Substance Use Disorder ( SUD). Treatments and techniques that work well with each of these conditions individually, do not necessarily work well when the patient has both. It can be equally challenging for the patient and the treatment provider. Many patients that survive a TBI had a substance use disorder prior to their injury. In some cases the SUD contributed to the TBI. Then there are those individuals who are vulnerable to developing a SUD after their TBI due to unemployment, isolation, loneliness, depression, impulsive behavior, poor decision making and/or decreased awareness. We will look at the correlation of TBI, SUD and MH ( Mental Health )given that the characteristics can be very similar and often result in a misdiagnosis. Many survivors of a TBI have difficulty in a traditional SUD treatment program, we will discuss modifications that can be beneficial to the individual, the treatment provider and other participants in the group. These changes are imperative if the individual is to be successful in SUD treatment program. FACULTY Janet Niemeier, PhD Presentation Title: Potential Pharmacological Treatments for Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury Bio: Dr. Niemeier received her PhD from Virginia Commonwealth University and subsequently did postdoctoral work at University of Virginia. She completed a fellowship at Drexel University College of Medicine in Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine for Women (ELAM), and is Board Certified in Rehabilitation Psychology. She joined the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Carolinas Rehabilitation in 2012, where she is currently a Professor and Director of Research. Dr. Niemeier is a nationally and internationally recognized clinician/researcher. Her work has been externally funded for 15 years by such agencies as NIH, NIDRR, and NARSAD. Her social-behavioral research projects include a manualized intervention for improving functional status of persons with TBI1, a manualized intervention for improving productivity after brain injury2, and a visual attention strategy to improve outcomes following brain injury in persons with hemispatial inattention or neglect, The Lighthouse Strategy3. More recently she and a cross-field collaborative research team at Carolinas Healthcare System are exploring biomarkers that may help shed light on treatments for persons with disabilities related to SCI and TBI. Presentation Description: This presentation will discuss the typical symptom complexes, presenting in patients with mild traumatic brain injury, that may be an opportunity for pharmacologic intervention (medications and supplements). Pre-existing disorders and genetic histories are critical to the decisions in treatment options. This presentation will review the medications more commonly used in these patients with an emphasis on the rationale and potential benefits of treatment. Common potential side effects and problems with these medications will also be reviewed. Neuropsychologist; Director PMR Research Carolinas Rehabilitation Presentation Title: Evidence-based Strategies for Cognitive Challenges After Acquired Brain Injury: The Lighthouse Strategy as an Example Presentation Description: Dr. Niemeier will provide an up-to-date overview of evidencebased cognitive rehabilitation interventions for common and disruptive memory, problem-solving, and attention deficits after ABI.
