During a routine physical it was discovered that Kasee, a graduate of Maine
Maritime Academy, and son of Scott and Lori Wilson of Dexter, had a rare
blood disease called Myelodysplastic Syndrome, or MDS.
The only cure for MDS is a bone marrow transplant. The transplant was
completed August 11 and Kasee is doing well. He will spend many weeks
in Boston with much recovery time, up to a year before he will be cleared
to pursue his career. There will be many medical expenses, many trips
back and fourth to Boston and much financial burden on Kasee and his
family.
We are in search for anyone willing to sell tickets, help with food
preparation, clean up, food delivery etc. Please call Barbara Whitney at
924-3443 (evenings) or Lori Malatesta 270-1551 (anytime).

SANGERVILLE – The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) SAFE Trust PAC (Safe
America’s Free Enterprise) has endorsed Paul Davis in his campaign for the Maine Senate.
Davis, who is currently a state representative from Sangerville, is running for Maine Senate District 4.
In its endorsement letter, the NFIB stated, “Small businesses are the backbone of the state’s economy
and, perhaps more importantly, they are the key to Maine’s future economic prosperity. Nearly all candidates talk about their support of small business but what matters most is action, not just talk, and your
voting record clearly shows that you both speak out and stand up for small business.”
“This is a very important endorsement, and I thank the NFIB for their vote of confidence,” Davis said.
“The success of Maine’s economy is tied to how well our small businesses are performing. They employ
most workers in the state. These are the entrepreneurs who are putting their capital at risk and investing in Maine. For too long they’ve had to do this in an unfriendly regulatory environment. In recent years,
we’ve made tremendous strides in making Maine more business friendly, but much more needs to be done.
As long as I am in the Legislature, small businesses will have my support.”
Paul Davis is currently serving his third term in the Maine House of Representatives. He previously
was a member of the Maine Senate, where he served as Assistant Republican Leader for four years.

“I support Sheriff John Goggin without reservation…”
To the Editor:
I am writing in support of Sheriff John Goggin in his quest for another term as Sheriff
of Piscataquis County.
Most of my 20 years as Count Commissioner (1985 – 2005) were during Sheriff Goggin’s
time in office. I chaired the Commission for 18 of those 20 years which involved frequent
contact with the Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Goggin. I found him to be a man of
integrity, honesty and loyal in all aspects of County work and his relationship with other
County Departments was very professional. He had the respect of other county departments as well as the Sheriff’s Dept.
Sheriff Goggin has had many years of experience and, with the continued support of
an experienced staff, he certainly is the best and most qualified candidate for the Sheriff
of Piscataquis County. The economy of Piscataquis County does not allow the spending
patterns found in other Maine counties, especially those in coastal and southern parts of
the state. Sheriff Goggin has successfully run a department that is responsible for a very
large area, Piscataquis County being the second largest county in the State. As a forer
Commissioner, I never believed it was necessary to micro-manage his department since
Sheriff Goggin and his staff always lived within the confines of their budget. Providing
law enforcement in the Unorganized Townships along with the County as a hole, requires
thorough planning and scheduling. Sheriff Goggin has completed this work for the past 24
years in a very successful and professional manner. I support Sheriff John Goggin without
reservation for another term as Piscataquis County Sheriff.

“…not a long-term solution…”
To the Editor:
The proponents who stand to profit from the proposed private East/West corridor have
stated publically that if people living in this part of Maine have a better idea for the wellbeing and economic development of the ‘heart’ of Maine, they should state it. Current
evidence shows local inhabitants are doing so: if you enter Dover-Foxcroft from the south,
you will note the re-furbishing of the Moosehead furniture mill in the center of downtown.
It is to be a multi-use development including restaurant, small hotel, office space and
private living units. Local people have already signed contracts for apartments which will
allow access to local services in a small town environment. This is a re-development which
will offer local jobs for many years to come and will enhance the lives of local residents
as well as tourists seeking the pleasures of a first class outdoor environment with nearby
Sebec Lake and PeaksKenny state park.
Another locally based, economic strength of our area lies in the ever-growing interest in
farming sustained by families determined to grow and sell local produce in a sustainable
environment. Key to supporting our local development and endeavors is protection of our
state’s fresh water sources—they make us the envy of many who come here as tourists
from other parts of the country and the world.
The East/West Corridor project would result in a long-term detriment, not a long-term
solution, to the economic well-being of central Maine.
Jamie Gaudion, Dover-Foxcroft
“…two town council candidates who will bring commitment and vitality…”
To the Editor:
On November 4th Dexter voters will be offered a choice of candidates for town council.
The Concerned Citizens of Dexter Committee is pleased to recommend two town council
candidates who will bring commitment and vitality when serving on the town council.
They are a valued part of our community and have contributed significantly for many
years.
Deborah “Deb” Fournier and Erlfred “Fred” Sherburne stand ideally suited as council
candidates because of deep roots in our town and a history of selfless service.
Deb Fournier, born in Dexter, graduated from UMaine – Farmington and holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees. She and husband, Dave, have raised three kids to be independent, responsible adults. As a music teacher at DRHS, she has been inspirational to
students and colleagues alike serving on several committees and was a grant writer leading to enhanced lighting and sound equipment for DRHS. Essentially a hometown girl,
Deb has lived out of state briefly and travelled the US and Europe which has given her an
appreciation for all that Maine has to offer. She has served in a number of other leadership capacities including church (Youth Choir Director), playground fundraising, and on
domestic violence issues including volunteer work for Womancare. Deb cares deeply for
our community and considers a seat on the town council a privilege and a challenge. Her
vision is to bring change that will help Dexter prosper and become a stronger community.
Fred Sherburne, born in Dexter and raised on his family’s farm, continues to operate
as a self-employed farmer for forty-four years. He and his wife, Carol raised two children
who went through our local schools and became successful educators. As a former town
council member, Fred has gained experience and perspective to deal with the future challenges facing our town. He recently attained “organic farmer” status -- an environmentally
notable achievement. Goal-oriented, he personifies Dexter with his strong work ethic.
Fred is a small business advocate who feels that businesses with one to ten employees are
our economic future. He believes the voice of Dexter’s citizens MUST be heard above that
of large corporations. Fred also believes that our community and our educational system
must be committed to each other for the public good.
Deb and Fred remain unconvinced that the proposed E/W Corridor is a good thing for
Dexter. They are skeptical that any local good can come from an international, limited
access private toll road. A lack of information from corporate proponents has reinforced
their position.
Deb Fournier and Fred Sherburne stand for inclusivity in government at all levels and
they value popular participation. Personal histories attest that they do “walk that walk”!
As you enter the polling place on November 4th, your vote for Deborah “Deb” Fournier
and Erlfred “Fred” Sherburne for Dexter Town Council will continue to support positive
change for our town.
The Concerned Citizens of Dexter Committee: Bob Fritsch, Tina & Gary Santos, Lisa &
Mark McKusick, Mike & Wanda Curtis, Judy Bennett, Dana Cronin, Ron Apel, Ruth Fogg,
Jill Jones, Karan Sleight, Ken Chadwick, Dave Pearson, Fred & Carol Sherburne, Sherri

“Candidates Maine Event”
To the Editor:
As Election Day approaches, there are many questions on the minds of voters concerning the economy, energy, the environment, education, health care, and the overall quality
of life for young and old in this largely rural state. This is certainly true around central
Maine where all these factors are of concern to Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike. Tying these issues together for the people of the central Maine region is the
proposed East West Corridor Project being planned by Cianbro Corporation. The project
is planned to include a limited access toll road and the rights of way for various utilities,
pipelines and energy and communications pathways that would bisect the state on its way
from Calais to Coburn Gore and ultimately provide the port of St. John, NB, and possibly
even Eastport, ME, with a more direct connection to Montreal and beyond while tying
in with the vast energy and transportation infrastructure already in place or still being
developed in the US Midwest and southern Canada.
To help answer some important questions concerning the corridor and all the other related issues, a “Candidates Maine Event: Their Perspectives on Eminent Domain, Energy
Initiatives, and the E/W Corridor”, will be held at the Center Theatre, Dover Foxcroft, on
Thursday, October 23 (13 days before Election Day 2014), beginning at 5pm. Gubernatorial, Senatorial, Congressional, and Local candidates will weigh in with their responses to
6 questions prepared by local constituents, either in person, through their representatives,
or with written replies that will be read to the audience. Representative and gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud has already agreed to participate and will be first to speak
on stage.
Question 1 asks whether the proposed corridor would be beneficial or detrimental to the
economy, agriculture, and natural resources of the region and state, and why it would be.
Question 2 asks how the project would be taxed (whether as private or private-public
partnership, as an entire commercial unit or otherwise, and how those taxes would benefit
the region and state).
Question 3 asks how the project’s environmental impact would be mitigated (additional
state parks, a new National Park, local mitigation efforts, etc.?).
Question 4 asks, since such a corridor project and any similar ones would probably run
in perpetuity, how the maximum benefit to the citizens of Maine would be realized (such
as the Permanent Fund Dividend for Alaska citizens from their pipeline’s profits).
Question 5 asks how each candidate would insure that each community affected by the
corridor project would have a say in its location, impacts and benefits.
Question 6 asks whether each candidate feels that the North American Energy Infrastructure Act (HR3301) and the Natural Gas Permitting Reform Act (HR1900), both now
moving through Congress, will expedite the proposed corridor project in Maine.
Following the responses to the 6 questions, there will be time for additional audience
questions and comments addressed to all the participants. Also, a short film produced by
a Maine high school student about the proposed project will be shown and he will be there
to comment on it. The film is also available online at: http://vimeo.com/99246765
It is hoped that this event will help voters to decide which candidates at all levels will
best serve the interests of the people of Maine as we all head into uncertain times together.
Edward Hummel, Concerned Citizens of Garland
“We are once again counting on Dexter voters…”
To the Editor:
The Concerned Citizens Committee of Dexter would like to thank all who voted last November for our current Councilors Ron Apel and Mark Robichaud, the candidates we endorsed. Along with new members, increased citizen support and participation in monthly
meetings - Dexter’s Town Council appears to enjoy a fresh attitude of Positive Change.
We are once again counting on Dexter voters to show their concern for the future of our
community with Continuing Positive Change. As last year before the November election,
we are sponsoring another candidates’ night at our Town Hall on October 21 from 7 until
9 pm. All candidates will be invited to this public forum. Citizen participation is strongly
encouraged.
Dexter’s future lies with the support of our citizens. A true democracy relies on its electorate to remain informed of the issues we face. It is also important to acquaint ourselves
with the views of those who would represent us. Please vote November 4 to help our community make the best decisions for Dexter’s future.
Dana Cronin & Wanda Curtis, Members of the Concerned Citizens of Dexter Committee
“Administrative Unit ... strongly endorses Sheriff John Goggin”
To the Editor:
The Administrative Unit of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office strongly endorses
Sheriff John Goggin for re-election. The office of Sheriff is significantly different from
that of Police Chief. While sheriffs carry out patrol and criminal investigations, they also
manage jails, civil process, prisoner transport, a county wide communications system, and
other constitutional duties that police chiefs never experience.
For over 24 years Sheriff Goggin has demonstrated decisive leadership in meeting the
ever changing world of responsibilities that a Sheriff carries. He has managed a jail that
consistently receives high grading from both state and federal inspectors, has functioned
successfully within the given county budgets, has been innovative in bringing new programs that help various segments of our county’s people and has done so with integrity,
compassion and fairness.
He has proven his ability to continue guiding this ship over the next four years.

“…our society tolerates this massive assault on our public health…”
To the Editor:
U.S., state, and municipal health authorities are working overtime and spending millions of dollars to stem the spread of Ebola, which has killed just one person here.
Where is the comparable effort to stem the spread of heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases that kill 1.4 million Americans annually and are linked
conclusively to excessive consumption of animal products? According to the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control, that’s 23 times the number killed by all infectious diseases combined,
including AIDS, hepatitis, blood poisoning, and intestinal infections!
Apparently, our society tolerates this massive assault on our public health, because
meat, dairy, and egg products have powerful champions in Congress. Bacteria and viruses
have none.
Yet, each of us can take personal responsibility for our own and our family’s health
by reducing, then dropping animal products from our menu. Fresh vegetables, fruits, legumes, and whole grains contain all the nutrients our body requires and are touted by
leading health authorities. Soy and nut-based meats, milks, and ice creams offer a delicious transition treat. Lots of websites provide helpful transition tips.

“…too large an increase in these tough economic times.”
To the Editor:
For many years the Dexter Kiwanis Club has had a fruit sale in the
fall. This was a successful fundraiser for us and our customers got a
good product at a decent price. This year when we received the price list
from the grove we discovered our costs had gone up over 10%. We do not
feel we can pass this large increase on to the people who have bought
fruit from us in the past. It is simply too large an increase in these
tough economic times. We are very grateful to all the people who supported our fruit sale in the past and we may look at sponsoring another
fruit sale in the future. We do hold a variety of fundraisers through the
year and we hope you will continue to support our efforts to improve the
lives of the children of our community.

“Don’t pull the plug on an E/W corridor.”
To the Editor:
A well-planned and constructed East/West 21st century corridor linking major seaports in down east Maine to interior destinations in Canada and westward has much in common with its 19th century counterpart – the Erie Canal. Those unable to recall or appreciate the historical
impact which that engineering achievement had on the commercial development of New York State and the westward expansion of the US
can look it up on the internet. Then Governor Dewitt Clinton pursued
the development of the Erie Canal after the Federal government considered the project “too ambitious”. Perhaps some vocal locals were
revolted by the need to uproot vegetation and clear virgin forests along
the route. They may have gagged at the thought of mules polluting the
waterway and become apoplectic envisioning the erection of ugly locks
to accommodate water level differentials. Despite such grumblings the
canal was completed. It stimulated, population growth, provided employment during its construction and operation, created transportation
related industries, and fostered the growth of communities at its termini and along its route.
At its zenith, 50,000 people depended on the canal for their livelihood.
Though its importance as a vital east/west transportation artery waned
with the introduction of more efficient and faster modes of delivery, its
directional orientation endured since those newer forms of transport essentially paralleled the canal. Fast forward to the mid to late 20th century. Once in Maine, a northern journey from points south via Route
1 and less traveled scenic roads was a tedious process, especially so
during winter and when time constraints begged for routes engineered
for speed and safety. Motorists and truckers welcomed the completion
of the North-South corridor and the arrival of I-95. Its later expansion
to expedite traffic flow around southern Maine urban bottlenecks was
opposed with essentially the same arguments facing the proposed East/
West corridor Environmentally conscious civil engineers, eventually
smoothed over the superficial and temporary terrestrial despoliation
associated with construction.
Today, the areas bordering the north/south corridor appear as pristine as Mother Nature intended. During a recent trip to Western Europe, I witnessed the impact of truck borne commerce on the major
motorways, especially those leading to/from major western European
seaports. Traffic jams of immense proportions occurred because car
and truck density was about equal. Competition for roadway space
could have been eased had trucks been furnished a dedicated avenue of
travel, thereby diverting heavily ladened vehicles away from primary
and secondary roads and relieving traffic congestion in populated areas.
Most office seeking politicians posture about the sad state of Maine’s
economy. I’ve heard only one invite the public’s attention to the proximity of down east ports to Europe and their potential for becoming major deep water terminals for import/export trade. During WWII, Casco
Bay, because of its relative closeness to Europe, became a major staging
area for convoys destined for that continent. Do down- east ports still
hold the same allure for development because of their geographical position to Old World customers? If such prospects are serious considerations in Maine’s future economic planning, then an East/West corridor
is a vital factor in bringing those plans to fruition.
When pondering the viability of an East/West corridor, those in positions to affect its development should keep all options open. They
shouldn’t be too quick to kill, forever , a project with immense potential
for Maine’s economic health. They should be visionaries and use some
imagination. Don’t pull the plug on an E/W corridor. Keep it on life
support. An East/West corridor, engineered to satisfy environmental
concerns and which conforms to legal requirements, can provide a
vital transportation link connecting major down-east seaports to points
westward. We may have another Erie Canal in the making.

DOVER-FOXCROFT - Foxcroft Academy students will be performing the musical comedy Bugsy Malone in the FA gymnasium at 7 p.m.
on the evenings of Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15.
Bugsy Malone was originally released as a British musical gangster
film directed by Alan Parker in 1976. The musical is a gangster flick
spoof set in Chicago and loosely based on the Prohibition era, focusing on the exploits of mobsters like Al Capone and Bugs Moran. FA’s
version will feature great music and dancing, plenty of memorable
characters. This year’s show will feature some surprise cameos from
local celebrities and the Foxcroft Academy staff.
“The kids have been having a blast so far and the production is
coming along nicely,” said Director Josh Guthrie, who made the decision to bring the musical back to campus last year. “We’ve again had
tremendous support from FA staff, parents, community members,
and local businesses, especially Pleasant River Lumber, which has
once again donated much of the materials needed to build our set.”
Tickets will be $8 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door. Make sure to arrive at least a few minutes early,
as last years shows were both close to full capacity.
Tri-County Technical Center
students constructing a greenhouse
DEXTER - Tri-County Technical Center is currently building a
greenhouse for use by the Pre-Technical Program at TCTC. The PreTechnical and Building Trades Programs are involved in the assembling of the greenhouse on site.
In addition to the construction, the Pre-Tech students will learn
how to grow and use garden vegetables – from starting them in the
greenhouse and later transplanting them outside as well as harvesting them, and using them in cooking healthy meals. The firewood
from the trees that were cleared at the greenhouse site is going to
be raffled off. TCTC is holding a raffle for a cord of split green mixed

Autumn art on display
PITTSFIELD - Members of Valley Arts Alliance hung the fourth
installation of seasonal paintings in the hospital lobby areas at Sebasticook Valley Health (SVH) in Pittsfield recently. In partnership
with Valley Arts Alliance, which is a group of over thirty artists and
supporters of the arts in the Sebasticook Valley region, the hospital
hosts a rotating art exhibit for public viewing.
What began in January, the exhibit features artwork by local artists using the theme of seasons as their guide. SVH President/CEO
and EMHS Senior Vice-President Terri Vieira commented, “Our patients and visitors have been interested and look forward to viewing
art in our hallways and waiting areas. It’s a privilege to offer opportunities for local artists to showcase their original artwork in our public spaces, and these beautiful prints and paintings infuse color and
endearing images that represent our region outside the walls of our
community hospital.”
The autumn landscapes, which are the fourth installment in the
Seasons exhibit, are by local artists Pam Peltier Dickinson, Jeanne
Finley, and Bonnie Ross. The artwork will be on display through midDecember when the exhibit will transition to winter-themed artwork.
According to their website (www.valleyartsalliance.org), the Valley
Arts Alliance supports locations for exhibiting works by our visual
artists in the Newport and Pittsfield areas. The group’s goals are to
offer an opportunity for artists and groups living here to collaborate
and create new opportunities to be creative in the arts.
