This term we welcome back Tanya Scanlan and Rina Burke from Long Service Leave. Thank you to Carol Schofield, Rosalie Yeend and Louise Iannucci for filling in while they were away. We’ve had four teachers officially appointed to our school into vacancies advertised in term 3. Congratulations to Debbie Bishop (Yr 3-7 Specialist PE teacher) and to Lia Francescangeli, Kylie Shipard and Olivia Crinion on their appointments as classroom teachers. World Teachers Day is celebrated in Australia on the last Friday in October. This year we will celebrate and recognise the contribution of our teachers on st Friday 31 October. Positive feedback from parents and students is always gratefully received by teachers. If you would like to acknowledge your child’s teachers (classroom and specialist) please talk with your children about writing a note or talking with their teacher/s about what they value, appreciate and respect. At the last assembly in term 3 we talked about children spending some of their holidays outside enjoying nature. It has been great hearing about the many outdoor adventures this week. Camping trips, bike rides, fishing, beach walks and visiting playgrounds were highlights for many children. Thank you to the Stradbroke families for encouraging your children to be active in the great outdoors. These are the activities that make great childhood memories. PLANNING FOR 2015 This term is a busy term with lots of special events including Year 3-7 Sports day, year 7 Graduation, ZooSnooze for year 3 classes, swimming lessons, JP Sing-along, the PYP Evaluation, PE Week & Multicultural Week. Behind the scenes there are many hours of work in developing the school budget and planning classes for 2015. Enclosed with this newsletter is information about the process of developing classes for next year. Please read this information carefully and return any information required by Monday 3 November. HATS In term 4 all students are required to wear broad brimmed, bucket or legonnaires hats (that cover the face, back of neck and ears) when outside. Children without a hat will need to play under a fixed shade area. Please ensure your child has a hat for term 4. Tues 21st-Thurs 23rd October Book Fair in Resource Centre HIGH ACHIEVER 9.30am Friday 24th October Last day to order and pay for year 7 polo top for 2015. Congratulations to Artyom Makagon who won a bronze medal in the 10 year long jump event at the SAPSASA State Athletics Championships. Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment -1- STRADBROKE FUN RUN Stradbroke School will be holding an adidas School Fun-Run/Walk as a major fundraising event this term. The event th will be held at School on Friday 14 November. The adidas School Fun-Run is a healthy, fun and active fundraiser that ensures we send the right message to our students about getting active, having fun and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The main focus of this event is on participation. Family support is most appreciated as we encourage all students to get involved. On Friday all students will receive a Sponsorship Form to help collect sponsorship on behalf of the school. The funds raised will be used to upgrade school facilities and resources. We ask all parents to read the Sponsorship Form and sign the front page to grant permission to fundraise and participate in this event. Students who raise just $10 or more will receive a reward for effort. Thank you, good luck and happy fundraising! Stradbroke School Fundraising Committee. REVIEW OF UNIFORM & DRESS CODE POLICY Last term the Uniform Committee surveyed Stradbroke families to gather information for the review of the Uniform & Dress Code Policy. Thank you to the 71 families who responded to the survey and provided great feedback. The next step is to incorporate the feedback into an updated policy which will then be distributed through a school newsletter. Some of the survey feedback that families may be interested in knowing includes: • 48% of families do not want the new school dress. Many families liked the design and colour however the dress was considered to be too expensive. The Uniform Committee will be keeping the current school dress (available through the Uniform Shop and local department stores) in the updated policy. • 78% of families liked the new two-tone long sleeve polo design. The Uniform Committee will be including the new two-tone long sleeve polo top in the updated policy. The plain long sleeve navy polo will also stay as this is available from the Uniform Shop and local department stores. • 78% of families (with children in year 6) responded that they would buy a seniors polo top for year 7. Fittings and order forms have been arranged. This polo top and the year 7 windcheater are optional items for year 7 students. • 60% of families do not want denim jeans/shorts to be included in the Uniform & Dress Code Policy. The Uniform Committee will be removing denim from the updated policy. • There were 54 comments about shoes and 42 of these comments recommended either keeping the current policy or further restricting the colours. The Uniform Committee will consider this feedback when updating the policy. • There was also feedback provided about hair accessories and ideas for generating and maintaining family support for the Uniform & Dress Code Policy. The Uniform Committee includes parent representatives: Heidi Smith, Adele Steel, Bronwyn Stephens, Amanda Zbierski, Sonia from the Uniform Shop, Jean McGuire (Business Manager) and Anne Lamont. Please talk with any of the people listed if you have any questions. NORWOOD MORIALTA HS ROWING Year 7 students who are attending NMHS next year are invited to ‘Come and Try’ rowing. The sessions are held at the NMHS Boatshed, Festival Drive, Adelaide from 9:30-11:30 am on: Sunday 19th October Sunday 2nd November Sunday 16th November Sunday 26th October Sunday 9th November Sunday 23rd November The ‘Come and Try’ days are a great opportunity for students to meet each other as well as meet current students and coaches. Whilst you don’t have to attend all sessions, attend as many as you can, as you will get your confidence up and you will get to know many of NMHSs current rowers. Please wear shorts, t-shirt and a hat (shoes that are easily removed such as thongs are a good idea to protect feet when carrying the boat), sports shoes are needed for the gym sessions. This included an invitation to parents, in the newsletter, to provide information and feedback regarding ideas for the Year 7 Graduation celebration. Through class discussions, students generated possible options for this year’s graduation. Students were asked to continue this discussion with their parents for homework and provide feedback to their classroom teacher. Thank you to those families who provided valuable feedback. As a result of these discussions and family feedback, the Year 7 Graduation Ceremony will be held at the Rostrevor Baptist Church, where family and friends are welcome to attend. This will be followed by a dinner-dance at the Campbelltown City Soccer and Social Club for the graduating students. Parents and caregivers are invited to join the Year 7 students later in the evening as they cut the Graduation Cake and perform a few dances they’ve learned from the Footsteps dance program; this will include an opportunity for parents to dance with their child. A newsletter providing more information will be distributed to families of Year 7 students. Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment 2 YEAR 1 /2 CAMP Over the last few years the year 1 & 2 classes at Stradbroke have been involved on a biennial basis, in an Outdoor Education camp experience at Arbury Park Outdoor Education Centre. This year we hoped to be able to continue this biennial program. The process involves completing and sending a booking application at the beginning of the year, after which the staff at the centre review the applications and decide which schools will be involved in the program at Arbury Park for the year. This year there were many more applications than weeks available. As there was a Stradbroke year 1 & 2 camp in 2012 and many applications this year were from schools which have not previously been to Arbury Park, our application was unsuccessful therefore there will not be a year 1 & 2 camp this year. SPECIALIST MUSIC LESSONS FOR 2015 At Stradbroke, we offer specialist instrumental music lessons for year 3-7 students. Years 3-7 can learn violin, viola or cello. Years 5-7 can also learn classical guitar. If you are in Years 2 – 6 and are interested as a beginner or continuing for 2015, please collect a consent form from the front office and st return by Friday 31 October. LOST STROLLER We have in the Front office a stroller that was left on the side of the road last term. A lady has handed it to us. We have had several in the past but not for a few years. Basically a 'book shop' is set up in the library with a range of books available for purchase. They are appropriate for the age range of year levels in our school and cover many interests and price ranges. There are also cheap options for purchase like novelty erasers and pens. A percentage of sales is retained by the school which will go towards funding the upgrade of the circulation desk and administration work area. The fair will run from Tuesday 21 October to Thursday 23 October. Each class will have a time to visit on Tuesday or Wednesday to see what is available and children can record a wish list to bring home and discuss with you. There is no pressure to have to buy anything and we will include that point in our conversations with classes. Thursday is the only day for purchasing and teachers will only send over the children who wish to buy an item and have money with them. The slushy machine is up and running to the delight of the children $1.00 per cup. Parents are welcome to attend on Thursday if they prefer to look at the resources and handle the money themselves on behalf of their child. It is also a chance to purchase a book as a gift for your child for Christmas or other significant event. As a parent you can access the Book Fair between the hours of 8.30am and 3.45pm; however it won't be open at recess or lunchtime. Wednesday afternoon from 3.10pm to 3.25pm starting Wed nd 22 October, we will be open once again for ice blocks and slushy sales. The weather is starting to warm up, so we hope everyone enjoys this treat before the trip home. Payment options include cash or EFTPOS facilities. The wish list students bring home also has information about paying online and recording the receipt number so the student can bring it in and receive the book. The new Term 4 menu will be included in this week’s newsletter. A few exciting changes have been introduced including “chicken burgers“ for $5.00 and new salad plates for $6.00. We hope the students and staff enjoy them. th st During Multicultural Week from 27 - 31 October, as a lunch treat we will be offering “Nachos” all week (corn chips, salsa, cheese and sour cream) for $4.50. Keep this in mind during the week as order forms will not go home. Books are stocked in multiples and can be taken when payment is made. Where a title proves to be popular and we run out of stock we will endeavor to fill the order as soon as possible. The winter treats such as wedges are no longer available. Resource Centre Staff In term 4 we would normally reintroduce sushi. Unfortunately due to Marisa’s surgery and recovery time we are unable to offer this menu item this term. We would like to wish Marisa a speedy recovery and look forward to her return in 2015. Coach’s award: Michael Lombardi for strong rebounds. Peter Minervini for outstanding speed. There are three age-appropriate competitions. Kanga Cricket (Year 2/3), Junior Cricket (Year 4/5) and Senior Cricket (Year 6/7). FUTSAL These competitions aim to capture the children moving out of the MILO in2CRICKET program and involve them in their own cricket team. Young cricketers receive a good grounding in the skills and are ready to move into club cricket when they reach the middle-to-upper primary level. In making recommendations about class composition, teachers consider factors such as: • learning needs • individual differences • gender balance • year level balance • preferred learning styles • social and emotional maturity • the length of time a class of children has been together • children with special needs and talents • social dynamics (which children to keep together and which to keep apart) • friendship groups • the number of children per class. Parent Information We invite parents to write a short letter to the Principal if you have specific information about the needs of your child for 2015. Please include your child’s name, current year level and each student’s requirements on a separate page (not one family letter). Please do not make requests for a specific teacher. Staffing can change as late as January and students and parents may become very disappointed if they have their heart set on a specific teacher, and changes are made prior to the beginning of the school year. Secondly, because of the number of requests, not all can be met. By granting some requests and not others, the school is placed in a position of favouring some families while discriminating against others. • Please place your letter in an envelope addressed to Anne Lamont. th • The final day for parental input is Thursday 30 October. • Parent information will be considered along with factors considered by our teachers and those listed above. • Only information based on educational criteria will be considered. • A copy of your letter will be made available to the class teachers who make the placements. Classroom teachers use a range of processes to ask children to nominate friends with whom they wish to be placed. As it’s extremely difficult for us to deal with contradictory information from students and parents, it’s preferable that parents don’t write about friendship requests to us, unless there are serious issues. We ask that you keep in mind that Stradbroke is a large school and this provides opportunities for children to broaden and strengthen their friendships with many students. Staying with the same group of friends every year will not allow your child to make the most of the ‘big school’ experience. At this stage class structures are not definite and the final allocation of teachers to classes, which will take place late in the term, is affected by the appointment of teachers. Who makes the final decision? Staff will do their best to meet your child's needs. You can be assured that we spend a great deal of time and effort in accommodating and allocating children to classes. It is the responsibility of the Principal to make the final decision on classes and placement of students. At times it may not be in the child's best interests to be placed according to parent requests and we will discuss the issue with you wherever possible. When will children and parents know about class placements? If possible, class placement information will be sent home with students in the last week of term. After that date children's class placements will not be changed unless there are extenuating circumstances. If you wish to take advantage of the opportunity to provide information about your child please ensure that all requests are th forwarded to the Principal no later than 4pm on Thursday 30 October. It’s that time of year again when we need accurate numbers for next year’s classes. Accurate student numbers are essential for creating classes. Every year we aim to avoid creating a new class in the first few weeks of the year as this is disruptive for children, families and staff. Excellence and Achievement in a Supportive School Environment 2 ICAS RESULTS Students from Stradbroke School achieved outstanding results in the ICAS this year. ICAS are developed for students in Year 2 to 12 and are sat annually. Each ICAS test is designed to assess students’ academic ability in aspects of Computer Skills, English, Mathematics, Science, Spelling and Writing. This year we had 68 students from Year 2 to 7 participate. We have many high-achievers and many students who achieved a personal best. Congratulations to all students for being courageous in your efforts and achievements in the ICAS Competitions this year. We are proud of the learning facilities and the exceptional programmes we provide for our students at Stradbroke School. In order to maintain and continuously improve what we offer, we rely on the financial support of our families. The annual Materials and Services Charge contributes to the funds available to support your students’ learning. ! ! ! The Charge is intended to cover the costs of those essential items and services used or consumed by individual students during the course of their study. The level of the Materials and Services Charge must reflect the actual cost of the goods and services provided for the Charge. The invoice for the Materials and Services Charge must match the notice by showing the composition and associated cost of the total Charge. We believe that the annual Materials and Services Charge represents excellent value for the year’s educational program. Please note that the School Card grant covers the first $226 of the fees in 2015, and the scheme for payment of fees by instalments will be available as in previous years. FOOD ALLERGIES? LABEL ORDERS CLEARLY STRADBROKE SCHOOL CANTEEN ORDERS 1. Children order their lunches on a brown paper bag and put it in the lunch crates in their classroom in the morning, lunch monitors from each class bring the crates over to the canteen no later than 9-30am. 2. All lunch orders must be clearly labelled on the front of the brown paper bags with: Please complete all order bags as follows using pen or texta: In the middle of the bag: FOOD ORDER Bottom left: CHILDS NAME Bottom right: CLASS/TEACHER 3. Brown paper bags may be purchased from the canteen for 10¢ each. These can be ordered with your child’s lunch and will be sent to their class in the lunch crates. We require one bag per item ordered. 4. As we do not store money in the canteen overnight, it is preferred that all orders be placed in the crate in the classroom. We cannot give out any change until we receive and start processing the class orders. 5. If you are paying for two or more lunches from different classes with the one amount of money ie: a note, please do not separate the orders, but place them altogether in the one bag with the money. This is a far more productive way rather than waiting for all the orders to come over from different classes and then having to chase up the one forgotten order with all the money. 6. Please ensure your child’s name; current teacher and class number are included on each bag. This is particularly important at the start of each new school year. 7. The correct money in the bag is always appreciated. 8. IOU’s are no longer acceptable. Children who tender insufficient money will be supplied with an alternative lunch to the value of the money supplied. 9. New parents are always very welcome to work voluntarily in the canteen. If interested, please contact the manager during the day in the canteen. 10. Prices are subject to variation at short notice due to changes in manufacturers/suppliers prices. Any changes to prices will be printed in the school newsletter. 11. All treats/special days will be advertised in the school newsletter. 12.
