Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. 123 St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2, Ireland. www.iaem.ie www.emergencymedicine.ie 15th October 2014 IAEM looks forward to bumper Annual Scientific Meeting The 25th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine (IAEM) kicks off on 16th October 2014 and promises to be the best ever. Amongst those with an international profile speaking at the meeting are Dr Scott Weingart, Prof. Alastair Nichol and Dr Peter Vicellio who are world experts on specific areas of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Weingart is an acknowledged expert on resuscitation and Dr Peter Vicellio has, for many years, led efforts to reduce the risk of Emergency Department (ED) overcrowding by the prompt transfer of inpatient boarders from the ED to hospital wards. The application of this Full Capacity Protocol has proved both to be safe and preferable from a patient’s perspective. Prof. Nichol was a major contributor to the ARISE trial of goal directed resuscitation for patients with early septic shock published in the New England Journal of Medicine on 1st October 2014. The Minister for Health, Dr Leo Varadkar TD, will officially open the meeting, which also features tracks for Emergency Nurses and EMS Paramedics. We also look forward to the participation of the Emergency Medicine Student Society of Ireland. The meeting will showcase the best research from Irish Emergency Medicine. The 2014 Leo Vella lecture will be delivered by recently retired St Vincent’s University Hospital Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Mr Robert McQuillan. Unfortunately 2014 saw the sad passing of Leo who was the first Consultant in Accident and Emergency Medicine (now Emergency Medicine) appointed in the Republic of Ireland in 1974. Details of the meeting are available on www.iaem2014.com.
