Midtown Community Center 570 McLawhorne Drive in Newport News. The Job
Fair will host more than 35 companies who are hiring or will be hiring in the near
future as well as additional booths with agency information about services.

celebration of Hispanic
Heritage Month, Portsmouth
Naval Medical Center invited
Regina Fremont-Gomez to
serve as the guest speaker on
October 8th. Mrs. FremontGomez spoke about the
history of Hispanics in the
United States and the mix of
cultures in the United States,
Mexico, Centtral America,
the Caribbean, and South
America.
The Panamanian Folkloric
Dance Group performed
several dances to delight the
audience. In addition, two
sailors also demonstrated
salsa and bachata, two
popular Latin dances.

in the world, she would have to rely on
herself and her own ambitions to succeed.
Rowe, who has now received international
acclaim as a motivational speaker and
author and started her own nonprofit
organization, has done just that.
In 2010, after finishing her book tour
for Aim High, Rowe was looking for a
place to donate a pair of her gently used
running shoes. It was this act of kindness
that inspired her to found The Got Sole
Project, an organization that collects and
distributes new and gently used shoes to
those in need.
She recalled how a new pair of shoes
made her feel when she was growing up in
poverty as a child.
The Got Sole Project started as a local
initiative and supported migrant working
families on the Eastern Shore of Virginia,
children’s shelters in Norfolk and more.
It soon expanded to meet needs around
the world in the aftermath of the typhoon
in the Philippines in 2013 and Hurricane
Sandy in 2012. For Rowe, The Got Sole
Project is just one more way to offer faith,
hope and love, this time, through shoes.
“I believe that many people have
slipped into accepting ‘good enough’
when it comes to work, school and even
play,” Rowe said. “I refuse to settle for
mediocrity; instead I look at every day as a
new beginning to reach for the top, do my
best and inspire those around me to do the
same.”
Rowe will be the motivational speaker
at an upcoming event in Hampton Roads,
the Girl Scout Famous Formers Luncheon,
which will take place on October 30 at
the Norfolk Yacht Club. At this luncheon,
GSCCC will be honoring six local Girl
Scout alumnae who continue to exemplify
the values of Girl Scouting through their
professional and volunteer roles in the
community. Everyone is invited to attend
and hear Rowe speak.
Tickets are $40 each and can be

The event is being sponsored by Inside
Business, Tidewater Hispanic Newspapers,
and Ticatch Financial Management.
Attend this year’s Girl Scout Famous Former luncheon to
help honor six dynamic women leaders from Hampton Roads.
These Girl Scout alumnae are the role models of today who are
shaping the lives of girls for a better tomorrow.

In addition to being a successful business woman in Hampton Roads,
Laura Contreras-Rowe is the founder of the non-profit Got Sole? –
an organization that is helping migrant workers and those living in
poverty with shoes and other needs. She is the author of Aim High, a
book of extraordinary stories of Hispanic and Latina women which
has been recognized with several awards, including first place in the
Latino Book Awards 2010 - Best Non-Fiction Multicultural Young
Adult Book. Laura is a motivational speaker who believes everyone
has the capability to do great things. She is a Girl Scout alumna who
serves as a role model for today’s young women.
