The Pesky Lateral Incisor Topics Dr Sadna Rajan—Developmental issues with the lateral incisor Lateral incisors are such interesting teeth in the dentition with a myriad of problems affecting them related to number, size, morphology, structure and eruption. The etiology includes developmental, environmental and genetic causes. Dr Gordon Burt—Managing the lateral incisor (considerations for management including: peg, build ups, fillings, rct, crowns, removal) A decision process ultimately involves whether to keep a tooth, or pursue replacement. The patient’s age and other factors are important considerations in this process. The solutions can be simple, or much more complex. Potentially, an early decision can result in a lifetime commitment to managing the problem. Dr Sean O’Callaghan—Orthodontic management of the peg or missing lateral incisor The digital age has revolutionised the management of the missing lateral incisor. Computer aided diagnosis in conjunction with virtual treatment planning can allow the practitioner to make an informed choice whether to open or close the space. Dr Harry Vlachodimitropoulos—Indirect resin bonded bridge techniques (the detail on how to carry out, case selection, prep, temp, lab considerations, cementation) The resin bonded bridge offers patients an effective long term solution to replace a missing lateral incisor. With proper case selection and effective preparation of the supporting tooth a functional and aesthetic outcome can be achieved. Professor Ian Meyers (QLD) - Direct resin solutions (Fibre reinforced bridges, lateralisation of the canine) Conservative restorative management of missing lateral incisors with composite resin is often a preferred treatment option due to patient age, the desire to be minimally invasive, unsuitability of alternative treatments or due to financial considerations. The use of glass fibre reinforced composite resin bridges can provide a very cost effective and conservative solution, which is reversible and allows for alternative treatments at a later date if necessary. The combination of good aesthetics and high fracture toughness, as well as enabling minimally invasive procedures, provides the clinician with alternative treatment options for patients, which can be predictable and provide good medium to long term stability and aesthetics Dr Phil Yeung—Replacement with implants Knowledge of the long-term survival of single implants in cases of congenitally missing lateral incisors in the maxilla is limited. There are many factors to consider when heading down this path: developmental, anatomical, bio-mechanical and not least aesthetics.
