The 3-D in mold label is processed with an injection-molded tub made of expanded PP. Gas-filled cavities, created by the migration of nitrogen introduced by controlled use of the MuCell process, between tub and in mold label provide a soft touch effect and can be used for forming more complex surface structures right up to Braille writing. At the same time, these cavities can have an insulating effect for hot and cold usage. The base tub is also designed with a physical foaming technology making it lighter and less costly to produce than a solid tub. 12.30 – 1.30 Lunch Concurrent Sessions The afternoon program will be divided into two concurrent sessions, one focused on IML, and one focused on IMD. Conference Program (day 1) February 18. 2015 IML Session - Hall One 1.30 - 2.00 Today’s Challenges: Adapting to the Increasing Demands of In-Mold Labeling Valérie Jean-Louis, Operations Manager, IML Labels Just a few years ago, In-Mold Labeling made its appearance on the North-American market. As a new technology, the obstacles were mainly technical and there was very little experience available. Now the expectations are changing as major brand owners are adopting the technology and now have the knowledge base to raise their expectations. How must we adapt in order to be able to respond? Color control, just-in-time deliveries, quality, food safety etc. How are today’s challenges asking us to adapt? 2.00 - 2.30 T-IML: Get the most out of it! Thomas Stahl, Sales Manager, ILLIG Maschinenbau GmbH Thermoformed cups can be decorated in various ways using the IML method integrated in the thermoforming process by ILLIG: Each one of the five outside surfaces (bottom as well) can be individually designed. Packs featuring attractive and high-quality decoration are a decisive sales argument at the POS. In-mold Labeling (IML-T) provides this option for thermoformed packs. ILLIG realized this technology e.g. in the latest development of the FSL 48, the first form, fill and seal line worldwide designed for specific applications in the food industry. A classic thermoforming machine of the RDM-K series, the RDML 70b, featuring a forming area of 680 mm x 300 mm, was also developed to market maturity. Both IML-T lines, FSL 48 and RDML 70b, are available in serial version and have been standing the test in daily practical operation. 2.30 - 3.00 High Cavitation IML Systems and Next Generation TRIM (Thin Recess Injection Molding) Jordan Robertson, General Manager, Business Development and Marketing, StackTeck The case for running high cavitation IML products (i.e. more than 16 cavities) using 2 level stack molds with suitable automation will be reviewed, with a particular focus on containers with a wrap-around label. Flexible stack mold design capability will be presented, including both internal and external gating options, as well as quick-change capability. Next generation TRIM developments will also be described, with a focus on maximizing ultra-lightweight capability to achieve IML parts with L/T ratios greater than 500. Approaches to take this technology to its limit will be discussed, as well as the different challenges for round and non-round IML parts. 3.00 - 3.45 Coffee & Networking Break 3.45 - 4.15 When should Vision Systems be used for IML Applications? The strengths of this technology can now be economically applied to IML in order to reduce labor, scrap and to improve the overall efficiency of the IML process.
