1. Celebrating the Life of George Fry
The family of George Fry invite his friends to a celebration in his honour. At his request, it is to be a joyous occasion to be held at the Black
Box Theatre, St. Thomas University, on Saturday, October 25 from 6-10pm. Formalities (and the term is used loosely) at 7pm.
"Let there be lots of music, flowers, food and wine. And no eulogies. And everyone must dance. Lots of Latin American music, sambas,
rhumbas and congas, if anyone can remember how to do them. Celebrate my life; don't mourn my death. I think I did the most I could

2. A Touch More Jazz Fredericton Arts Alliance Gala Oct 23
The annual fundraising gala for The Fredericton Arts Alliance will be held at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on Thursday, October 23,
starting at 7pm. Musical entertainment will be provided by pianist Diane Roxborough Brown and the event will feature the Alex Bailey
Swing Band. There will be dancing, a delectable assortment of finger foods as well as live and silent art auctions. Original artworks by
distinguished artists such as: Bruno Bobak, Stephen May, William Forrestall, Dana O'Regan, Jean Rooney, David Brewer, Chris Colwell,
Peter Thomas, Nancy Blanchard-MacDonald, Trudy Gallagher, Cynthia Ryder and many others will be up for auction. There will also be an
array of unique and rare items.
Proceeds from the Gala go to support the Arts Alliance's work in encouraging and advocating for the arts in Fredericton. This includes the
production of the ARTSnews, the Artists in Residence program in the Historic Garrison District, the Artist-in-the-Schools program and the
Art Off the Street homeless shelters program.

3. Tickets On Sale for Hey Rosetta! Album release at The Playhouse Oct 17
With Shivering Songs set to announce it’s 2015 festival lineup in early November a great opportunity arose to take part in Hey Rosetta!’s
album release tour taking place Thursday January 29, 2015. The festival will run January 22 – 25, 2015. Due to a heavy touring schedule
this show will not officially be part of the festival but it’s our great honor to work with such an amazing east coast group that we’ve seen
grow bigger and better, year after year. It’s with great pleasure that take part in helping release ‘SECOND SIGHT’ in Fredericton, NB at the
Playhouse.
Second Sight, Hey Rosetta!’s first album in nearly four years represents the longest musical gestation in the band’s history. In part, the
delay was due to the lengthy touring cycle following the success of their last album Seeds, which was short-listed for the Polaris Music
Prize, and resulted in the band’s first JUNO nomination and a performance on the JUNO telecast.

4. Free Public Reading by Greg Bechtel Oct 24
The University of New Brunswick invites you to a free public reading by UNB alumnus Greg Bechtel. We hope you will join us on Friday,
October 24, at 8pm at the Alumni Lounge in UNB Fredericton’s Alumni Memorial Building.
Greg Bechtel graduated from UNB in 2004 with an MA in English (Creative Writing) and is very excited to return to Fredericton to read
from his first book, Boundary Problems, which was published earlier this year by Freehand Books. UNB professor Mark Jarman describes
Bechtel’s book as “a chaotic collection with comic touches, a paranoid Pynchonesque mix-tape of hosers and hipster cafes, office jobs and
summer camp confessions, lit theory and online porn. Boundary problems? No problem for Greg Bechtel; his debut is wild, sly, and

6. Lennie Gallant Celebrates Release of New Album and Book at the CSAC Oct 24

Lennie Gallant is touring in celebration of the release of his new album entitled Live Acoustic at The Carleton. Just announced as a
nominee for the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Awards for both English Songwriter of the Year and Solo Artist of the Year on the strength of
his new recording, Lennie is also celebrating the launch of a new book entitled Peter’s Dream, which is a collaboration with visual artist
and sibling, Karen Gallant. All of this comes hot on the heels of his summer-long run at Charlottetown’s Mack Theatre with his show
Searching For Abegweit: The Island Songs and Stories of Lennie Gallant, a runaway hit that was extended to an incredible 57 sold out
shows.
Lennie Gallant’s new album contains 16 live tracks. It is a combination of brand new songs and fresh takes on familiar favourites from his
impressive back catalogue. New songs include Has Anybody Seen My Skates, God’s Reply, Amelia (inspired by Amelia Earhart, and cowritten with Liam Titcomb), and Abegweit, which was written for his hit show, in which he starred as part of this year’s Charlottetown
Summer Festival. The album also includes fan favourites such as Peter’s Dream, Mademoiselle, Laisse aller, and rockin’ versions of 47
Angels on Her Front Lawn, Tales of The Phantom Ship, and Tell Me A Ghost Story. Live Acoustic at The Carleton is Lennie’s tenth full length
recording and was captured over two nights in the intimate atmosphere of the award-winning songwriter music club, The Carleton, in
Halifax.
A recipient of the Order of Canada for his contributions to Canadian music culture, Lennie Gallant’s previously released body of work
includes nine albums, and has won him a host of awards and nominations from the Junos, ECMAs, and the Prix Eloizes. An international
touring artist who has represented Canada on song writing events in Nashville, London, and Texas; and who has entertained our troops in
Kandahar, performed at Canada Day events in Washington and London, and on the world stage at the XXI Winter Olympics, Lennie Gallant

7. New Exhibition My Favourite Things Begins at Gallery 78 Oct 24
My Favourite Things features five realist women artists. All five artists live or have roots in Atlantic Canada. Jessie Babin draws exquisitely
in graphite, charcoal and coloured pencil; Ann Balch’s paintings of faces in watercolour and oil are moving and introspective at the same
time; Joanne Hunt’s floral and still life compositions exemplify this artist’s eye for detail; Susan Paterson’s paintings in oil are classical
masterpieces; and Cathy Ross’s watercolour paintings uplift and engage the viewer.
Ann Manuel and Monica Lacey: Recent Work and Glenn Hall: Paintings from the Cabin remain on display until October 19, 2014.

8. Tickets on Sale for Dan Mangan + Blacksmith at the Playhouse Oct 24
Dan Mangan + Blacksmith recently announced the January 13 release of its new studio album Club Meds. Prior to that, the two-time
JUNO-Award Winner and Polaris Music Prize Shortlisted artist debuted Vessel the lead single from its upcoming album and a part of the
soundtrack for Simon Pegg’s indie film Hector And The Search For Happiness. Today, the Vancouver band premieres the captivating, Ben

Dan Mangan + Blacksmith is hitting the road with Bear’s Den this week for a month long tour of the U.S. and has now confirmed a coast to
coast run of Canadian dates in early 2015. Commencing February 18 in Halifax at the Rebecca Cohen Theatre and finishing up with a two
night stand at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver on March 13 and 14, the band will be joined by label mate Hayden and Calgary’s Astral

Magic in the Moonlight. Set on the banks of the French Riviera amidst the high society of the Roaring Twenties, this sparkling, lighthearted charmer is part May-December romance and part comedy of manners.
Wealthy, middle-aged Englishman Stanley (Academy Award winner Colin Firth, The King’s Speech, The Railway Man) is asked to visit the
household of a rich socialite in the south of France in order to debunk a supposed “spiritual medium” who has the family under her spell.
However, Stanley soon has his ironclad skepticism put to the test when he meets the mystic in the flesh. Sophie (Emma Stone, The Help,
Gangster Squad) is a beautiful young woman who has the ability to look into a person’s eyes and tell them things about their life that no
one else could possibly know. Is it all a con—or could she actually be the real thing? As séances are succeeded by picturesque drives in the
country and strolls along the shoreline of this holiday paradise, Stanley’s po-faced pragmatism begins to give way to the mysteries of
magic—and the thrill of romance.
Firth and Stone are perfectly matched as the stoic Stanley and the effervescent Sophie, and Allen’s masterfully light touch recalls all the
pleasures of his previous classics. With its irrepressible charm and stunningly beautiful setting, Magic in the Moonlight may just have you

Over a decade in the making, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood is a coming-of-age epic of unparalleled depth and scope. In a variation on the
method employed by Michael Apted on his groundbreaking Up series of documentaries, this understated yet overwhelming drama was
shot chronologically, at regular intervals over a twelve-year period; as the story progresses, the actors age and mature along with their
characters.
The young protagonist, Mason (played by newcomer Ellar Coltrane), grows up before our eyes from the age of five to eighteen, and along
with him we experience the formative moments of his life as well as the seemingly inconsequential ones. He finds his voice (even though it
tends to crack), and wears his heart on his sleeve (even though it tends to break). The end result is a moving series of vignettes that add
up to a lifetime—or at least the beginnings of one. Accompanying Mason on his journey are his sister Samantha (played by Linklater’s
daughter, Lorelei) and his divorced parents, played by Emmy winner Patricia Arquette (TV’s Medium) and Academy Award nominee Ethan
Hawke (the Before... trilogy, Training Day).
With the trilogy of Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, Linklater had explored how characters (and the actors who play
them) evolve and change over time. Pushing this ambitious project even further in Boyhood, Linklater added yet another fascinating layer
to the experiment: as the production took shape over a dozen years, Linklater himself was developing as a filmmaker, completing more
than a half dozen other films including Fast Food Nation, Bernie, and the last two Before... films. Brilliantly blurring the lines between life
and art, Boyhood is extraordinary, touching, and sincere. No one has never seen a film like it—except, perhaps, in our own home movies.
This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular

13. Theatre UNB Presents Les Belles-Soeurs by Michel Tremblay Oct 28-Nov 1
Theatre UNB is set to open its 2014-15 season with a play that has become a much-loved classic of Canadian theatre, Quebec playwright
Michel Tremblay’s riotous and outrageous comedy Les Belles-Soeurs.
Set in working-class francophone Montreal in 1965, Les Belles-Soeurs depicts a tumultuous night in the tenement apartment of Germaine
Lauzon. After winning a million trading stamps in a contest, Germaine invites her sisters, friends, and neighbors to her home for a stamppasting party so that she can cash in her winnings as soon as possible. Over the course of the evening, petty rivalries and disputes
between the women boil to the surface, and the alternately hilarious, sad, and moving joys, sorrows, and disappointments of their lives
are tellingly revealed.
Les Belles-Soeurs broke new ground as a play that put the lives of average working-class urban housewives on stage. Denounced by many
when it first premiered in 1968 for the frankness and irreverence with which its characters addressed such then-taboo topics as sex,
religion, and traditional family values, the play became the first hit for Tremblay, Quebec’s most famed playwright, and has gone to be the
most produced francophone play in the world.
Theatre UNB’s production of the English translation of the play, by Bill Glassco and John van Burek, features an all-female cast of fifteen
UNB Drama students, and is directed by Len Falkenstein. The play runs at 8pm nightly, Wednesday October 29 through Saturday,
November 1, at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus.
Tickets ($15 regular, $10 for seniors and the underemployed, and $8 for students) are available at the door. Tickets for a reduced-price

14. Annual APEGNB Haunted Tour is Back for 2014 Oct 29-Nov 1
It’s the event everyone’s been waiting all year for! This Halloween weekend, from October 29 to November 1, Engineers and Geoscientists

New Brunswick will be staging their 6 annual APEGNB Haunted Tour at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre (CSAC) in Fredericton, to benefit
the centre and its outstanding, year-round ArtReach program. The Low Scare tours are also back again this year at Science East, with
proceeds going to support free public access to programs at the Exploratory Centre for Early Learning (ExCEL).

Last year, more than 2000 people attended the APEGNB Haunted Tour at the CSAC, which brought in close to $20,000 to support local
educational programming for children, at-risk youth, seniors and disadvantaged groups. CSAC and Science East are Scare Central in
Fredericton-home of the original Haunted Tours! The fright stations are designed and staffed by engineers, artists and technology experts,
experienced in delivering top-notch Halloween thrills and chills. This year’s High Scare tour will include our wildly innovative fright
stations, costumed creepers and synchronized outdoor light and sound display. Visitors are encouraged to come early!

15. Beer ‘n Stein Fall Fundraiser Oct 30
At 7pm on Thursday, October 30 at Gallery 78, don a costume and come celebrate fine crafts at Beer 'n Stein, a Halloween fundraiser
presented by the New Brunswick Crafts Council and Picaroons Traditional Ales. This event will raise funds for the 2015 Craft Year
exhibition and to promote fine craft in the community. Ticketholders receive one free Picaroons beer and can choose one handcrafted
beer stein or one handcrafted stein stuffer (woven scarves, jewellery, etc.). All of this, plus an evening of music, a spooky photo booth,
delicious finger food from the Lunar Rogue Pub, film screenings, handmade craft by Hammerthreads, an exciting display by DaVinci
College of Art and Design, and a costume contest.

Please join pianist Hyun Hee Park, violinist Nadia Francavilla, and guitarist Steven Peacock at 3PM on Sunday, November 2 for a fascinating
and diverse program featuring these three instruments in various combinations.
A Spanish influence, such as in works by Rodrigo and Marchelie, informs many of the mostly-modern but strongly melodic music to be
presented, but Eastern European works by Stravinsky and Boutros, as well as evocations of Atlantic Canada and of New England, will
round out the program.

Writing for a Grant: John Murchie
November 19, 10am-4pm, at Connexion ARC, in Fredericton
Along with an overview of the typical components of grant applications, this workshop will focus on developing a project concept and
writing about it clearly and concisely. The session will focus on Canada Council for the Arts and artsnb. Learn how to write about yourself
and your art practice in a way that supports your proposal and discover what jurors look for when reviewing submissions. Participants are
asked to bring their partially-completed grant applications for feedback.
John Murchie is a visual artist and curator living and working in Sackville, NB. The former coordinator of Struts Gallery & Faucet Media
Arts Centre, he has served on numerous provincial and national juries.
All workshops are free to ArtsLink NB members, who are welcome to participate in as many of the workshops as they would like.
Non-member fees are $25 for half day sessions, and $50 for full day workshops.
Space is limited and registration is required. A $20 deposit is taken at registration to secure your spot, and will be reimbursed at the

Kimberly Arsenault, an accredited music therapist, will be running a series of 6 music therapy sessions for young children between the
ages of 3-7. As an accredited music therapist, she will use specifically learned techniques and music in order stimulate positive growth and
development in areas such as cognitive, physical, and social skills - all through the power (and fun) of music.

1. Seeing Charlotte: A Short Film Contest looking for Story Lines about the History of the CSAC
The Charlotte Street Arts Centre, located at 732 Charlotte Street, is an historic Fredericton landmark. Built in 1884, the centre’s first
incarnation was as the Charlotte Street School, which boasts the title of being the oldest public school in Fredericton. In 2005, after a
number of years of abandonment, this historic gem was given a second life as an art centre.
Memories, history, architecture and art all connect in the storied past of this old building, and this rich past, present and future will be
celebrated during the Charlotte Street Arts Centre’s 10 Year Anniversary Celebration in 2015. As part of this celebration, the Charlotte
Street Arts Centre, in partnership with the NB Film Co-op, is hosting a contest looking for short film ideas about 732 Charlotte Street.
How would you make the Charlotte Street Arts Centre come to life on the big screen? What kind of craziness went on in this building
during its time as a school? How did its transformation from school to arts centre come to be? What lies ahead for Charlotte Street?

This is a low-cost, low-risk opportunity for craftspeople who are new to the wholesale market and who have never before exhibited at
ACTS to sell their wares to a diverse audience outside of the province in a competitive trade environment. The NBCC is planning to

Can you sing? Do you want to win cash and a CD Recording? Do you want exposure and fun? Maritime Idol is coming to Fredericton for
Season 9 at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre beginning November 12, 2014.
Performances are videotaped and put online for voting. There is also live voting each week by the audience. Rankings are combined and
accumulated over the 4 weeks to determine the top half moving on with winners from other area competitions to face the judges (for 50%
of the vote) at a Regional competition. From there, half move on to the 1/4 Finals to make the TOP who record “Best of Maritime Idol
2015” CD and on to the finals with the live Maritime Idol band for the title of “Maritime Idol 2015!”
