There was an error in September’s newsletter. I apologize to all who read the article giving the wrong times
for school and playground zones. We want to keep all of
our children safe, and hope you are following the new
speed zones of 30 kph between the hours of 7:30 am
through to 9:00 pm. School zones are during school
days, and playground zones are everyday – whether or
not the school/playground sign has been changed to
the new times.
Southwood was voted the 5th best neighbourhood in
Calgary in which to live in 2014. Would you like to make
it better? The Southwood board needs you to volunteer
– one evening a month for board meetings and your enthusiastic participation in events such as Winter Festival
and Hallowe’en Howler. Get to know your neighbours
and make our community a wonderful place in which
to grow! Our next board meeting starts at 7:00 pm on
October 2.
My favourite Hallowe’en riddles, thanks to the City of
Calgary:
•What’s the ratio of a pumpkin’s circumference to its diameter? Pumpkin Pi
•Where did the goblin throw the football? Over the ghoul
line (thanks to the Stampeder victory over Toronto on

outhwest Calgary is home to many great health
care facilities, not the least of which is the Knee
Clinic. There are between 14,000 – 20,000 knee
injuries in Alberta each year, with the busiest public
clinics seeing 2,000 of these. The Knee Clinic on Southport Road at the corner of Southland and Macleod is
the only private knee clinic in Alberta and serves both
acute and chronic knee injury patients. This private, feefor-service approach solves the problem of extended
wait times, and the specialist doctors within the clinic
have access to both public and private services once the
initial consultation is complete. This includes advanced
imaging, direct surgical referrals, on-site injection therapies and an extensive

launching new pet licensing
website
Animal & Bylaw Services is launching a new pet licensing website in order to improve service to Calgarians.
Effective 8 a.m. on September 29, the new website will
launch at https://petlicence.calgary.ca.
If you previously bookmarked the animal licensing website, please DELETE your bookmark, it will no longer be
in effect after the scheduled date and time.
After testing of the new site is complete in the spring
of 2015, we will have the ability to add features such as
Interac, automatic withdrawals and renewals. Currently,
pet owners can only pay by credit card when using the
online service or calling 311.
In Calgary, all cats and dogs over three (3) months of age
must be licensed. An animal license enables The City to
return your missing cat or dog to you and it tells others
that your lost pet is not a stray and needs to be returned
to his family.
For more information, visit Calgary.ca and search Licensing a Cat or Dog.

Trico Centre Makes Physical
Activity Fun For The Whole Family
The lifestyle habits we create as children are often the ones
that stick with us throughout our lives.
By making regular physical activity a fun part of your family’s routine, you are instilling in your children the desire to
maintain healthy levels of physical activity for life.
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), a
leading organization for personal training in Canada, publishes physical activity guidelines for all age groups. These
include:
•0 to 5 years–daily play (progressing towards 60 minutes of
energetic play per day by age 5)
•5 to 17 years – at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous
physical activity every day
•Adults 18 to 65+ years –at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week and resistance
(weight) training to maintain bone and muscle health two
days per week (Source: CSEP, 2014, Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines)
Trico Centre offers many fun and exciting opportunities for
families to be active all year round, making it easy to meet
these guidelines.
Here are some ways you can make physical activity fun for
your entire family.
1. Have each family member choose a favourite exercise
and combine all of them into a circuit (series of exercises
performed consecutively) that everyone can do in the
Rona Fitness Centre.
2. Alternate between family members’ favourite activities
throughout the week. Go swimming in the wave pool;
enjoy a leisure skate in the arena; play basketball during
open gym time; practice hockey skills at Stick and Puck.
3. Hire a personal trainer to develop a fitness program the
whole family can do together.
Taking the time to help your children appreciate the pleasures of physical activity while they are young helps ensure
they will remain active for life and enjoy the health benefits
associated with regular physical activity.

COUNCILLOR’S REPORT
BRIAN PINCOTT
WARD 11
www.ward11calgary.ca
As the weather gets colder and the nights get longer,
the leaves on our trees are starting to change colours.
This means that our leaf and pumpkin composting
program will be starting! You’ll be able to drop off
the leaves that you’ve spent hours raking up in your
yard, and any unwanted pumpkins left over from Halloween, at one of 36 locations until November 9th. For
more information please visit www.calgary.ca/waste.
If you aren’t able to make it to one of the drop off
locations by November 9th, you can drop your loose
yard waste off at any City landfill. Please be aware, a
Friends of Fish Creek Star
Night
reduced rate is charged for yard waste that is being
dropped off for composting, but if you have a load of
yard waste mixed with garbage you will be charged
the basic sanitary waste charge.
I hope that you and your family have a wonderful
Thanksgiving and a Happy Halloween!
As always, I encourage constituents of Ward 11 to contact me with any questions or concerns. I email out information regarding upcoming events, City programs
and opportunities to provide input into the City’s
public engagement programs relevant to Ward 11
residents. Due to the new anti-spam laws you need to
specifically request our email updates; you can sign up
at anytime by emailing my office at ward11@calgary.

•Let your parents know where you are going to be at
all times and advise them if you will be late returning.
Halloween Safety
Alberta Health Services EMS would like to remind parents and trick-or-treaters of some basic Halloween safety tips, as October 31st approaches. Halloween can be
an exciting time for children, but with the distraction of
treats and costumes, safety rules can easily be forgotten. Take some time to review these simple tips and reminders to help ensure Halloween is a safe night for all.
Trick-or-Treaters
•Remember: all regular pedestrian rules still apply. Be
sure to cross the road at marked cross walks, or well lit
corners only. It is safest to work your way up one side of
the street, and then cross once to the other side.
•Stay away from houses that are not well lit. Do not accept rides from strangers, or enter any home you feel
is unsafe.

Parents
•Be certain that young trick-or-treaters are accompanied by an adult. Older children should stay in groups.
•Advise children not to eat anything until they return
home. Dispose of any items that appear to have been
tampered with, or that are not properly wrapped.
•Pre-determine boundaries to trick-or-treat within, and
establish a firm time to return home.
Costumes
•Consider sending your children with a flashlight for additional safety and increased visibility.
•When purchasing, or making costumes, look for materials and accessories that are labeled flame-resistant.
•Ensure your child is wearing adequate foot wear that
takes into consideration weather conditions and walking
•Choose bright colored costumes that are highly visible. Adding reflective tape to costumes further increases visibility.

By the time this newsletter comes out in a few weeks
there will have been some significant changes made in
Edmonton. The first change I would like to note is that
Jim Prentice has become our Premier. He and his cabinet will have lots of work to do before the fall Legislature sitting date October 27.
My work as your MLA will continue uninterrupted and
as please feel free to express your thoughts on all matters. I am a numbers guy, so please see below for some
important numbers in Alberta.
Alberta to sell all government aircraft
One of Premier Jim Prentice’s first moves is to sell the
fleet of government aircraft.
Personally I travel mostly via car or government aircraft
and I am happy to continue with this practice as it is
how all of us typically travel.
Things you may not know about Alberta by the
numbers:
•Alberta’s population grew by 3.5 per cent in 2013—triple the national average—surpassing the four million
mark for the first time.
•A newborn baby girl in Alberta is expected to live for
nearly 84 years on average, whereas newborn boys
are expected to live for almost 80 years.
•2013 was a bumper year for crops, with production
soaring 18 per cent higher than in 2012, keeping farm
receipts near record levels.
•In 2013, the number of wildfires decreased from 1,555
to 1,193, remaining below the previous five-year average of 1,585 (2009-2013).
•The average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment ranges from $739 in Medicine Hat to $2,061 in
Fort McMurray.
•About 75 per cent of Alberta’s high school students
graduated within three years of entering Grade 10

and almost 82 per cent within five years, a notable improvement since 2004-05.
•Alberta workers enjoyed the highest average weekly
earnings ($1,108.01) in 2013 – 22 per cent above the
national average.
•In 2012, Alberta’s total investment in upstream oil and
gas reached a record of $51.9 billion.
•During the past decade, Alberta produced about onethird of the nation’s wheat, slightly more than one-third
of the canola crop and almost half of the barley crop.
•In 2013, almost half of Albertans who volunteered
chose to contribute to sports and recreation activities by coaching a team, or by officiating or organizing
sporting and recreational events.
•In 2013-14, nine out of 10 Albertans attended arts
events or participated in arts activities.
