STAYING SAFE ONLINE
Many parents have questions and concerns about their
teenagers’ use of the Internet. Netsafe is a New Zealand
organisation that supports parents, teenagers and
children to develop the social learning involved in using
digital devices and keeping safe online. They have
developed many resources that are helpful to parents
and young people. Their latest booklet “Staying Safe
Online” provides cyber-safety tips from New Zealand’s
leading on-line companies – such as Facebook, YouTube
and Microsoft – and can be accessed on their site
www.netsafe.org.nz .
It is important that parents and caregivers are involved
and interested in their son or daughter’s online life and
activities. Netsafe offers suggestions around issues for
parents such as

YEAR 13 STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT RECOGNISED IN UNVERSITY
SCHOLARSHIPS
It is that time of the year when many of our Year 13s are preparing for the move onto
tertiary study, and as part of this many are seeing their diligence and academic success
rewarded. The David Johnstone charitable trust scholarship recipients have been
announced and two of our Year 13 students, Emma Voss and Matthew Ash, have both
been awarded one. These scholarships are designed to assist students in furthering their
education by providing the recipients with $6000 to study at Waikato University.
Congratulations to both of these students.
We also have a number of students who been awarded the Victoria Excellence
Scholarships, each worth $5,000. Congratulations to Laura Wilson, Georgia Ball, Laura
McKinnon, Finnian Nacey and Grace Quinn-Foster who are all recipients of this scholarship.
Ruby Dillon has also been awarded an Undergraduate Excellence Scholarship for Art and
Design at AUT. This scholarship, worth $5000, recognises Ruby’s proven excellence in Art
and Design.
SCIENCE SUMMER SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP
Samantha Hoyle, Madeleine Palmer and Connor Kemp, three Year 12 students, have
gained a place in the Hill Laboratories Waikato Science Summer School (30th Nov – 5th Dec
2014) to be held at the University of Waikato. This is a residential course and the students
are fortunate to have the generous support of the Cambridge Rotary Club who will pay
their course fees.
GOLF
Congratulations to Jordan Woodall, a Year 11 student, who was selected to represent
Waikato as the number one Under 16 player in the interprovincial golf tournament held
during the September holidays.
CRICKET
Paige Pretswell, Year 13, has been named in the Northern District’s Spirit Women’s Cricket
team for this coming weekend. This team is just below the White Ferns (national cricket
team.) Also in the wider squad/team are two former Cambridge High School students
Brooke Kirkbride and Rhiana Vincent.
IELTS SUCCESS
Recently the Cambridge High School
International Students sat the IELTS – a test that
assesses the English language proficiency of
people who want to study or work where English
is used as the language of communication.
Rebecca Partemi, a Year 12 student from Italy,
achieved an IELTS score of 9.0 in Listening, 8.5 in
Reading, 7.5 in Writing and 7.5 in Speaking. The
overall band score was 8.0; so this was an
excellent achievement. Well done!
