Who is my neighbour?
"Love your neighbour as yourself" the Gospel says (Matthew 22:38). But who is my neighbour?
We often respond to that question by saying, "My neighbours are all the people I am living with on
this earth, especially the sick, the hungry, the dying, and all who are in need." But this is not what
Jesus says. When Jesus tells the story of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:29-37) to answer the
question "Who is my neighbour?” he ends by asking, “Which…..do you think, proved himself a
neighbour to the man who fell into the bandits’ hands?” The neighbour, Jesus makes clear, it is
not the poor man lying on the side of the road, stripped, beaten and half dead, but the Samaritan
who crossed the road, “bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them….. lifted him onto his
own mount and took him to an inn and looked after him. “My neighbour is the one who crosses the
road for me!

Gift aid offerings/donations: can be taken out at any
time throughout the year. It is a valuable source of
additional income to the Cathedral with no extra cost
to parishioners.
Sacrament of the Sick
Parishioners are asked to approach one of the priests
to receive the Sacrament of the Sick before being
admitted to hospital for treatment. If you are
housebound or are unable to come to Mass, the
priests will be happy to visit you in your home.

Outreach Group
Patients in Hospital
If you know of a forthcoming visit to a hospital or
serious illness or an operation, please let one of our
priests know before you enter the hospital, so that
he can give you the Sacrament of the Sick & any
other sacraments before you go to the hospital.

Marriage
Couples, who consider the Cathedral as their
parish and are intending to be married, must give at
the very least six months’ notice. Please call or
email Cathedral House, for a Marriage Preparation
Enrolment form. Dates for 2015 courses should
be available early in 2015.
Baptism
Parents wishing to have their child baptised should
complete & return a Baptism form, which is
available from Cathedral House. Please give two
months’ notice for Baptism. You will be invited to
attend a Baptism session held in Cathedral House.

Tuesday Concerts 2014-2015
Concerts will begin on 28th October at 7.30pm. For
this concert, we will welcome back Jeremy Filsell,
who played here last February, when the concert
included Rachmaninov’s 2nd Piano Concerto
(arranged for piano and organ.) This time, the
concert will feature Racmaninov’s 1st Piano
Concerto, as well as French music for piano, organ
and voice, with American lyric soprano, Rebecca
Kellerman Petretta and cathedral organist Simon
Niemiński Entry to all concerts in the series will be
free, with a retiring collection.
Colmcille Choir
On Saturday 1st November the Colmcille Choir will
be performing at the Sacred Hall Church, Lauriston,
Edinburgh. Further details on notice board in the
porch. The choir will also be singing alongside our
own choir at the 11.30am Mass on Sunday 2nd
November.

Called to Act –
‘Catholic Social Teaching and You’
Are you between 18 and 35 and involved with the
SSVP? Then ‘Called to Act’ is for you! Bringing
together young adult Vincentians from Scotland,
Ireland and England, this event will give you the
chance to socialise, learn more about the SSVP
and your place in it and find out what you can get
involved in. The event will run from 10.30am
Saturday 1st November until 1.00pm on Sunday 2nd
November at The Conforti Institute, Calder Avenue,
Coatbridge. Cost £65 – this covers accommodation

Faith and Freedom
To mark the launch of Aid to the Church in
Need’s Religious Freedom Report, please join us
on the Wednesday 5th November 2014 at 6.30pm
in the Gillis Centre (100 Strathhearn Road,
Edinburgh, EH9 1BB). At the event you will learn
about those people throughout the world who suffer
persecution because of their faith and ways in
which you can stand up and make a difference. At
the event we are privileged to welcome two
powerful
speakers:

Ignatius
Kaigama, President of the Nigerian Bishops'
Conference and John Pontifex, Editor in Chief:
Religious Freedom in the World 2014 Report. The
evening will begin at 6.30pm with an opening
prayer by Archbishop Leo Cushley. The event is
free but there will be a collection for the Church in

Safeguarding Training Session
Volunteers who are working with children or
vulnerable adults and who have not yet attended a
session should have received an invitation to the
next training session on the 12th November. If you
have not done so already, please reply ASAP to
Alina as in the invite, or via the Cathedral office. In
addition, any volunteer who has attended a session
quite a few years ago is welcome and
recommended to attend for an update by the
Archdiocesan trainers let Alina Armstrong or the

SCIAF Remembrance Mass
Our annual Mass, to commemorate our supporters
who have passed away, will take place on at
1.00pm on Thursday 13th November at SCIAF
Office, 19 Park Circus, Glasgow, G3 6BE. The
Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Joe Mackle, our
Chaplain, and there will be tea and coffee
afterwards. If you are unable to attend, but would
like us to remember a loved one in our prayers,

Foodbank
Our Church of Scotland neighbours at St Mary’s
Church, 12 Bellevue Crescent, Edinburgh, EH3
6NE, have organised a Food Bank operated from
the Drummond Room within the Church Precincts.
It is open from 10.00am to 12 noon. This is a very
worthwhile project and we would very much
welcome our Parishioners’ participation. Only longlife non-perishables foods are suitable – e.g cartons
UHT milk, fruit juice, pasta, pasta sauces, rice,
noodles, tinned food: meat, fish, vegetables (not
potatoes), baked beans, spaghetti, fruit, custard,
sponge pudding, rice pudding, biscuits, jam,
chocolate, jelly, sugar, tea bags (40 pack), instant
coffee (small jars). Thank you!

If you are harsh with the widow, or with the orphan, my
anger will flare against you.
The Lord said to Moses, Tell the sons of Israel this, You
must not molest the stranger or oppress him, for you
lived as strangers in the land of Egypt. You must not be
harsh with the widow, or with the orphan; if you are harsh
with them, they will surely cry out to me, and be sure I
shall hear their cry; my anger will flare and I shall kill you
with the sword, your own wives will be widows, your own
children orphans. If you lend money to any of my people,
to any poor man among you, you must not play the
usurer with him: you must not demand interest from him.
If you take anothers cloak as a pledge, you must give it
back to him before sunset. It is all the covering he has; it

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the
Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one
of them put a question, 'Master, which is the greatest
commandment of the Law?' Jesus said, 'You must love
the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul,
and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first
commandment. The second resembles it: You must love
your neighbour as yourself. On these two
commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets

1 Thessalonians 1:5-10
You broke with idolatry and became servants of God;
you are now waiting for his Son.
You observed the sort of life we lived when we were with
you, which was for your instruction, and you were led to
become imitators of us, and of the Lord; and it was with
the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in
spite of the great opposition all round you. This has
made you the great example to all believers in
Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the
word of the Lord started to spread - and not only
throughout Macedonia and Achaia, for the news of your
faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to
tell other people about it: other people tell us how we
started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry
when you were converted to God and became servants
of the real, living God; and how you are now waiting for
Jesus, his Son, whom he raised from the dead, to come
from heaven to save us from the retribution which is
coming.

When answering the Pharisees Jesus uses
scripture, which, as he is the Word of God, he
embodies. He quotes two sayings: Deuteronomy
6:5 (love of God) and Leviticus 19:18 (love of
neighbour), and puts them together. As far as one
can tell this connection has not been made before,
and this sums up Jesus’ claim that he had not
come to change the Law, but to fulfil it. The
second part is the one in focus today, as the first
reading shows. It might seem to be another of
those obscure historical references, going into
unnecessary detail about cloaks, but it begins
with big statements and suggests a way in which
we might offend against this command today – by
what we think of immigrants. What else can we
apply this reading to? We are probably not harsh
with the widow and orphan, except by neglect,
but the words about lending hit right home. We
say airily ‘life’s not fair’ as if we can do nothing
about it. But fairness and all that it entails is one
of the two pillars of the law. This was the last
question anyone asked Jesus; this answer
therefore sums up his whole teaching and his life.
