Shaping the future of Asian innovation
Asia is focusing on innovation, attracting a pool of highly specialised expertise and inspiring technopreneurs to
rapidly bring ideas to the market to achieve sustainable economic growth. Hon. Mrs Fanny Law will share her
thoughts on how Asia could embrace knowledge-generation and cultivate innovation in the region. She will also
discuss how connecting and collaborating with academia, research partners and local and international partners
can generate the next wave of innovative applications and technologies. Lastly, she will highlight how HKSTP is
advancing innovation in Biotechnology, Electronics, Green Technology, Information Technology and
Telecommunications and Precision Engineering through incubation and support programme.

Nurturing Singapore’s aspiring intrapreneurs
Asia is emerging as a global innovation powerhouse, bringing both opportunities and competition for Singapore.
To strengthen Singapore’s competitiveness and economic growth in the region, the country aims to achieve its
long-term vision of becoming a research-intensive, innovative and entrepreneurial economy. To take the nation’s
innovation and value creation to the next level, the Singapore government has committed S$16.1 billion to
developing the country’s R&D capabilities, enterprise innovation and entrepreneurship through the Research,
Innovation and Enterprise Plan (RIE 2015). Against this backdrop, Mr. Teo will discuss how Singapore is fostering
entrepreneurship’s mindset and talent pipeline. He will also share how the country is providing support through
financing schemes, incentive schemes and incubator programmes made available by various government
agencies.

Supporting the next generation of sustainable urban development
The challenge of re-imagining the urban environment to meet the needs of the next 30 years will not be met by
continuing to duplicate the designs, which have, fundamentally, remained static for the last century. The current
“core, floor plate, cladding” approach was largely driven by the needs of the elevator companies to have a
concentrated group of elevators to allow easy boarding of passengers. Five years ago Schindler changed the
game by focusing, not on optimising a single elevator ride, but on the entire journey through the building. This
innovation means that the constraints on architects to build to the classic model have been largely removed.
Realising this potential led Schindler to a major engagement with the architectural community. Dr. Friedli will
discuss the new approach to building a sustainable urban environment, which is as exciting as it is novel.
