wrong lot
A dream, custom-built beach
house has turned into a nightmare
for a couple from Linn, Missouri.
Six months after the three-story
house was built along the Atlantic
Ocean near Palm Coast, Mark and
Brenda Voss learned it’s on the
wrong lot in the gated Ocean Hammock community.
Mark Voss said they are in “total
disbelief.” The Voss’s own 18 other
residential lots in the community.
They bought the lot in 2012 and
hired Keystone Homes to build a
5,000-square-foot vacation rental.
Keystone vice president Robbie
Richmond said they’ve trying to negotiate a settlement. The Voss’s have
hired a lawyer.
Keystone and Voss say the error
can be traced to a 2013 survey. The
mistake was uncovered in September after the house had been rented
frequently.
Woman,
grandbaby found
in local lake
The bodies of a 59-year-old
woman and her 4-year-old granddaughter have been found in a South
Florida lake.
Laura Fleming took her granddaughter Leila Fleming to a lake
inside a gated community in
Miramar on Sunday night to feed
the ducks.
Family members called police
when the pair didn’t return.
Police found the bodies in the
lake short time later.
Authorities haven’t said how the
two may have ended up in the water.
No further details were immediately
available.
Rainy season
over
South Florida’s water managers
say the region’s wet season has
ended with slightly above-average
rainfall.
Meteorologists with the South
Florida Water Management District
say that the region’s daily sea-breeze
cycle wet-season rains ended Oct.

Officials say the seasonal rainfall left water levels in good condition in many areas, which will give
water managers more flexibility
with the water supply during the
dry season.
The dry season typically runs
from mid-October through mid-May
with about 18 inches of rain on average.
South Florida remains under the
district’s year-round landscape irrigation rules that limit residential
and commercial landscape watering to two or three days per week.
Man falls to his
death from
Florida condo
Florida authorities say alcohol
may be a factor in the death of an
Ohio man who fell while trying to
climb to the roof of a beachfront
condominium.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office says Cody Conley of
Centerville, Ohio, died early Saturday after trying to climb from the
sixth floor landing of a St. Pete
Beach condominium to the roof.
Deputies say Conley had stripped
down to his boxer shorts before attempting the climb.
Conley’s 17-year-old brother also
climbed over the landing’s railing
to try to stop his brother from falling. Deputies say Conley fell to the
pavement below and died at a hospital.
The sheriff’s office says Conley’s
death appears to be accidental. An
autopsy is pending.
Conley and his family were visiting Florida for a family wedding.
CDC sets Ebola

victim’s door late Wednesday night,
announced he was a “Deerfield Beach
police officer,” held up an official looking ID and burglarized and beat his
victim.
Paul Ramirez was surprised when a
man dressed all in black and claiming
to be a police officer came to his door
close to midnight and demanded entry. Ramirez was apprehensive and
asked to see the identification. Robert
Rosamelia held up his Pennsylvania
State Corrections badge, an ID from
his time as a corrections officer.
Once inside, Rosamelia began to
accuse Ramirez of having drugs in the
home. He told the victim that he was
going to arrest him and put him in
handcuffs.
Instead, Rosamelia pulled out a roll
of duct tape and began to tape the
victim’s hands. Ramirez became suspicious of Rosamelia and asked him to
have other officers respond to the
home. Rosamelia took out a can of
pepper spray, sprayed the victim in the
face and then hit him with a wooden
baton, causing a laceration to the
victim’s head.
The victim began to fight back and
a struggle ensued. During the altercation, Rosamelia fled the apartment.
Witnesses heard yelling from the
victim’s apartment and saw a white
female run through the complex’s
parking lot and throw an object into
some hedges. They watched the fe-

the victim but denied any altercation
took place. A search of the car revealed a roll of duct tape, a black skull
cap, a pair of black gloves, pepper
spray, a wallet with a badge and a bed
sheet with blood on it.
The subjects also had a bottle of
Xanax which Gaudette admitted to
having bought them early that evening.
The wooden baton was discovered by
investigators in the hedges as speci-
fied by the witness.
Rosamelia is facing charges for
burglary, battery, impersonating a law
enforcement officer, petit theft and
false imprisonment. Gaudette is facing charges of burglary, battery and
possession of a controlled substance
without a prescription.

BSO closes in on
'Operation Family Matters'
In conjunction with Domestic
Violence Awareness month, the
Broward Sheriff ’s Office Civil Division conducted Operation Family
Matters early Thursday, targeting
people who haven’t paid court-ordered child support payments and
those with domestic violence injunctions.
Nearly 30 deputies from the Civil
Division, Reserve Unit, crime suppression teams and detention served
12 domestic violence injunctions,
also known as restraining orders,
and arrested nine people for failure
to pay child support.
Those nine people owed a total
$5,818. The teams started out with
121 restraining orders and 259 warrants for failure to pay child support, also known as writs of bodily
attachment.
“BSO is dedicated to addressing
domestic violence head on. Only by
bringing this issue into the light can
we hope to eradicate it,” Sheriff
Scott Israel said. “Children deserve
the support of their parents.
Those parents who fail to pay
court-ordered child support are hurting their children more than anyone
else.”
BSO’s Civil Division carries out
the sheriff ’s statutory responsibility for the service of process and
execution of writs.
Annually, the division processes
and serves more than 315,000 documents. In 2013, the division received
1,147 warrants for failure to pay
child support and about 8,600 restraining orders.

A woman who
challenged Republican Gov.
Rick Scott in the
August primary
was arrested Monday and charged
with two counts of
fraud after authorities said she
made up campaign donors in an effort to collect matching campaign funds from the state.
Yinka Abosede Adeshina, 43, was arrested at
Tallahassee Regional Airport as she returned home
from a vacation in Nigeria. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement said she filed two campaign finance reports with the Department of State
listing $182,080 in donations.
The problem is, the donors don’t exist and their
addresses were fabricated, investigators said.
Adeshina received 16,761 votes, or 1.8 percent
of the votes cast, in the Aug. 26 primary, which
Scott easily won.
Adeshina served as her own campaign treasurer.
Investigators said the only bank transaction they

Southeast 10th Street.
Once the light turned red and the
last of the northbound traffic cleared
the intersection, he proceeded eastbound. Motorcyclist George Aguila,
Jr., 28, 3150 N.E. 13th Ave., Pompano
Beach was heading northbound.
According to witnesses, he went
into the intersection after the light had
turned red and crashed into the rear
passenger side of the Kia.
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue pronounced Aguila dead at the scene.
Modine was not injured.
Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic
homicide detectives shut down the intersection for several hours while they
collected evidence from the scene.
The investigation continues.
Trial off indefinitely
in Florida terror case
Trial has been postponed indefinitely in the South Florida case of two
Pakistani-born brothers accused of
plotting to set off bombs in New York
City.
A Miami federal judge on Thursday granted the delay requested by
prosecutors and defense lawyers. Trial
for Raees Alam Qazi and Sheheryar
Alam Qazi had been scheduled to begin in early November but is now off
until sometime next year.
One reason is that defense lawyers
need more time to go through FBI
recordings, video and other evidence.
In addition, prosecutors intend to
charge the brothers with assaulting
two U.S. Marshals earlier this year.

Warrant issued for man
wanted in Lakes shooting

The Civil Division also enforces

The Broward Sheriff’s Office has
issued an arrest warrant for the arrest
of a man who shot an acquaintance on
Saturday night in a Lauderdale Lakes
parking lot.
According to BSO, at 10:16 p.m.
on Saturday night Herman Farrell and
Sean Fleming had an argument in the
parking lot of the Town Square apartments.
Detectives say that there had been
an ongoing dispute between Farrell
and Fleming, who had previously
known each other for several years.
Farrell then shot Fleming multiple
times after the argument between the
two had escalated, authorities said.
Fleming died at the scene while
Farrell took off. Detectives are still
searching for
Farrell, 31, who
is facing one
charge of firstdegree murder.

crash

Beekeeping on the rise in urban areas
Rebecca Conroy, dressed in long sleeves and a veiled
hat, worked inside her apiary at the Ochs 4-H Educational
Center. Three days had passed since she discovered two of
her 21 hives suffered severe damage from what she suspected was pesticide poisoning.
She was ready to see if any other hives were hurt, and if
at least the queens from the damaged hives had survived.
She began to pull up frames, the dividers that hold the
honeycombs, turning them from one side to the other.
Dead bees landed in piles, and no, she couldn’t find the
two queens.
She went on to check her other 19 hives and soon let out
a sigh of relief. Her other bees — all 400,000 of them —
were hard at work producing honey.
“I think that the affected bees went out to the same
flower that must have been sprayed, and although the
pesticide wasn’t strong enough to kill them there, they died
once they got home,” Conroy said. “People need to learn
what the sprays do to the environment.”
Beekeeping is a life passion for Conroy, 38, who talks
to 4-H groups on gardening and beekeeping in return for
use of the apiary.
“Bees are amazing creatures. Everyone who works with
them falls in love with them,” she said.
These days, that would be more people than ever. The
number of registered beekeepers in Pinellas County has
more than doubled in the past two years. In 2012, the
number was less than 50; in 2014, the number is at 106.
“And that number is growing,” said Dave Westervelt, the
chief apiary inspector for the Florida Department of Agriculture.
Westervelt thinks that the increase is due to a 2012 state
law that took away the power of local municipalities to
decide whether bees could be kept in residential areas.
It also amended Florida’s Right to Farm Act, relaxing
rules on beekeepers.
The result is that unless you live in a deed-restricted
neighborhood or have rules set up by a neighborhood
association, it is now possible for you to become a backyard beekeeper.
“The thinking was by allowing beekeeping in more
places, there would be an increase in healthy European
honeybees,” Westervelt said.
And the legislation is beginning to see results, he said.
Although it’s impossible to count all the bees out there,
beekeepers share information, and they are reporting to
Westervelt that they are seeing more swarms of honeybees.
Swarming, the natural means of reproduction of honeybee colonies, is a sign that bees are healthy.
“They are reporting more swarms in the last year than
in many years,” Westervelt said.

Police in Coral Springs caught up
with a man they believe was trying
to break into a business and then led
fled from police in an SUV.
Officers said the incident took
place around 10 p.m. Saturday night
at 2200 University Drive.
That’s where
an alarm at an
Enterprise
Rental Car business alerted police of the breakin.
When officers arrived, they
reported seeing

leaving at a
high-rate of speed.
The suspect was later identified
as Juan Carlos Cardoso.
“When they attempted to conduct
a traffic stop on University Drive,
the vehicle refused to stop,” said Lt.
Brad McKeone.
Officers followed the man to
Southgate Boulevard in Tamarac
where he crashed into other cars and
slammed into a police car.
“The suspect came around and he
tried to like swerve the cop and they
were trying to cut him off,” said
Kayla Weiss. “He was resisting and
trying to fight the cops and they
‘tased’ him.”
“I heard loud brakes and sirens
and boom and he hit the car,” said
Gavin Gordon whose car was damaged. Gordon’s mother’s car was
damaged too.
Cardoso was arrested.
An officer injured his knee as the
suspect was being arrested and was
taken to a hospital for treatment,
officials said.
As police were investigating the
original call, they learned the
suspect’s target was not the Enterprise.
“It was discovered the suspect
was actually trying to break into the
cell phone store next door, the
Verizon,” said Lt. McKeone. “Actually cutting a hole from the Enterprise into the cell phone store.”

Pot dollars eyed
Entrepreneurs putting pressure
for passage of medical marijuana in
Florida say it could bring billions of
dollars worth of economic growth.
The campaign in support of
Amendment 2 has emphasized it
would help suffering patients. But it
also could stir job creation and business growth in the opening of marijuana dispensaries and everything
from legal services to lab testing to
agriculture.
The state Department of Health
has estimated sales of medical marijuana could total anywhere from
$331 million up to $5.6 billion. That,
in turn, could increase sales and
property tax collections.
David Hart of the Florida Chamber of Commerce says any possible
economic growth brought is “absolutely not the kind of business expansion that we would hope to see.”
Fingers amputated
while playing with
fireworks
LA
An 8-year-old child was rushed
to the hospital Friday evening after
getting two or three fingers partially
amputated while playing with fireworks in Lauderhill.
Lauderhill police said the child
was transported as a trauma alert to
Broward Health Medical Center.
It is unclear if the child was being
supervised or why he was playing
with fireworks.
Police are also still trying to determine how the accident unfolded.

Two Key West bartenders who
won a ruling from a Monroe County
judge to be married will serve as
grand marshals of the Key West Fantasy Fest parade.
Festival officials announced Friday that Aaron Huntsman and William Lee Jones will lead the Oct. 25
procession. Friday was the first day
of the 10-day costuming and masking festival.
Officials say the pair was chosen
because of their contributions to lead
Key West and Florida into same-sex
marriage equality. Although Monroe County is prepared to issue
same-sex marriage licenses, Huntsman and Jones haven’t married because Florida Attorney General Pam
Bondi is seeking review from the

Local city officials and health
advocates will rally in St. Petersburg to convince state lawmakers to
expand Medicaid coverage to
roughly 1 million Floridians under
the federal health law.
Medicaid expansion has been one
of the biggest issues in the tight race
between Gov. Rick Scott and former
Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist says he’ll
call a special session or pass it
through executive order. Scott says
he’ll let the Legislature duke it out
and only supports it as long as the
federal government pays 100 percent of the bill.

Florida is releasing the last round
of unemployment numbers before
Election Day.
Florida’s jobless numbers for
September will be released on Friday.

been flat. The rate for August was
6.3 percent, or higher than it was in
the previous month.
The state’s rate currently is higher
than the U.S. rate of 5.9 percent.
Economists say the rate has remained flat in 2014 because people

The unemployment rate is important for Gov. Rick Scott because he
campaigned in 2010 on a pledge to
add 700,000 jobs above normal
growth.
Payroll provider ADP reported
last week that the state added 12,560
private sector jobs during September. ADP’s survey is separate from
the one conducted by government
agencies.
Supreme Court
puts limits on
phone tracking
Police in Florida aren’t allowed
to use a cellphone to track someone’s
movements according to a sweeping
new ruling from the Florida Supreme
Court.
The court by a 5-2 vote ruled
Thursday that authorities in Broward
County had no right to stop and arrest Shawn Tracey for possession of
more than 400 grams of cocaine.
Law enforcement had a warrant
that allowed them to monitor the
phone numbers of incoming and
outgoing phone calls.
But a majority of justices said
that did not give them permission to
track Tracey’s movements through
location of his phone.
One defense attorney called the
ruling an “enormous victory” for
privacy rights.
One of the dissenting justices contends that people should have no
expectation of privacy if they keep
their cellphones turned on.
Robber pockets

Broward Sheriff ’s Office deputies are searching for an armed robber who stole fistfuls of cash from a

store. The robbery was captured by
the store’s security video.
On October 6, an unidentified
man walked into a Check ‘n Go and
held the clerk at gunpoint while he
demanded, “Give me the money.”

thief stuffed handfuls of cash, one
after another, into his pockets as the
clerk handed them to him. He got
away with thousands of dollars. The
subject also took the victim’s cell
phone, which was later recovered
by investigators.
The robber is described as a black
male with a slim build, approximately 6’4” in height, with a mustache and a goatee. He was wearing
a black shirt, a black glove on his
right hand, blue jeans, a knit cap
and sunglasses. The suspect was also
wearing a long dreadlock wig. He
carried a black semi-automatic handgun.

launches war on
wife
U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson’s messy
divorce is getting messier, at least
when it comes to his house.
Court papers filed by his estranged wife, Lolita, claim that the
Democratic congressman failed to
pay for repairs for the 5,300-squarefoot Orlando house where she is living with their four children. The
roof is leaking, broken windows are
allowing rain to get inside and the
house has a significant mold problem because of the moisture, Lolita
Grayson said in the papers filed at
the Orange County Courthouse.
She also said the congressman
cut off her credit cards, even though
he has been the sole financial provider during their 24 years of marriage.
“The wife has been a stay-at-home
wife and mother and is financially
dependent on her husband,” the filing said. “The wife has no financial
resources to contribute to the repairs and maintenance of the marital residence.”

children living at home, the couple
has an adult child in school and he is
paying the tuition, NeJame said.
“If she is a poor housekeeper,
that’s her issue, not his,” NeJame
said. “For her to slant it in such a
way that he is not providing his fair
share is wrong and untrue.”
The accusation on home repairs
is only the latest salvo between the
millionaire congressman and his estranged wife in contentious divorce
proceedings that started at the beginning of the year.
In March, Lolita Grayson was
granted a restraining order against
the congressman after she alleged
that Alan Grayson pushed her
against the front door of their home
when he stopped by the house. The
Orange County Sheriff ’s Office investigated the claim but decided
there was not enough evidence to
file charges. A video of the encounter taken by a Grayson staffer shows
the diminutive Lolita Grayson pushing her tall husband.
In April, Alan Grayson accused
his wife of bigamy, claiming she
was never divorced from her first
husband when they married in 1990.
Lolita Grayson says she was divorced at the time.
Before the divorce proceedings
move ahead, a hearing on whether
the marriage is void because of the
bigamy allegation will take place
next month.

this week and never returned.

Ebola virus may be
creating its own immunity
The spread of Ebola in West Africa reveals two truths: The disease
is swift, and it is devastating. Amid
the chaos of deadly outbreak, researchers say another truth may exist: The disease might be quietly
inoculating a significant portion of
the population who are exposed to
the virus but never succumb to it or
show symptoms of being infected.
If those individuals have acquired
an immunity to Ebola, the strategies
for the intervention and treatment
of the disease need to be reconsidered, according to a letter published
online today in The Lancet, a leading medical journal.

"We found associations between
certain gene polymorphisms and delayed fracture healing in a sample of
patients," said J. Spence Reid, professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation.
"Our study was preliminary but it
demonstrated the feasibility of a
larger one, which we're now work-
ing to set up."

lead to screening tests for patients

Of the eight million bone fractures in the U.S. every year, about
10 percent fail to heal normally.

The authors, led by postdoctoral
fellow Steve Bellan at The University of Texas at Austin, looked at
studies done in the aftermath of an

One showed that 71 percent of
people who had close contact with
Ebola patients and tested positive
for the virus did not get sick; another showed 46 percent of people
who had close contact with Ebola
patients and did not get sick had
evidence of infection with the virus.
“We want to know whether people
who are infected without getting sick
become immune,” Pulliam said.
“If these people are protected
from future infections, this would
open up new opportunities for controlling the disease.”
The letter suggests the asymptomatic individuals can help slow
the spread of Ebola in two important ways:
They can be recruited to work as
caregivers in high-risk communities;
and their natural immunity may
make them prime candidates for
donating blood for transfusions.
“If we can take advantage of natural immunity within the affected
communities, we may be able impact the course of the epidemic even
before a vaccine becomes available,”
Pulliam said.
“Even if current projections overestimate how big this epidemic will
become, its effects are devastating,
and a global effort to control the
spread of Ebola within West Africa
remains imperative,” she added.

"Some fractures are slow-healing for no obvious reason, and we
wondered if there is a genetic basis
for those cases," said Reid.
He and his colleagues selected
from their records 33 patients diagnosed with "atrophic nonunion" -the failure of a fracture to knit together on its own within six months.
As controls, they selected 29 patients whose fractures had healed
normally.
Using cheek swabs, the researchers obtained DNA from the patients.
In each case they checked tiny sites
of known DNA-sequence variations
-- "single nucleotide polymorphisms" -- that mark common gene
variants. They looked only at the
SNPs within 30 genes suspected of
involvement in fracture healing.
The analysis revealed three SNPs
that were more common in the nonhealing group than in the normalhealing group -- hinting that their
respective gene variants may somehow impair or fail to support fracture healing.
The researchers are currently
planning a study with a larger patient sample and a broader mapping
of the genome, to provide a more
definitive picture of the gene variants associated with delayed fracture healing.
In principle, identifying specific
gene variants as risk factors for poor
fracture healing would lead not only
to the development of patient screening tests, but also to a better understanding of the basic biology of how
fractures heal.
"We could develop mouse models of these genetic polymorphisms,
for example, to observe in detail the
role they play after a fracture," Reid
said.

The long-term care crisis
The median annual cost of a nursing home is over $87,000. This expense, which can persist for several
years, is largely paid out of pocket by
the elderly and their families until they are left with
no savings.
For most Americans, it
is only at that point – impoverishment – that any
form of social insurance
kicks in.
Social Security and
Medicare largely ended
elderly poverty but catastrophic long term care
needs still push many into
poverty.
Last March, a major
study of public attitudes
towards long-term care
found that most Americans
are largely clueless about
the financial risk of needing care in
old age.
Around 70% of 65 year olds will
need some long-term support before
they die.
Despite this risk, two-thirds of
Americans over 40 have done little or
no planning for their care needs.
Three-quarters think their spouse
will care for them, and almost half
think their children and grandchildren
will care for them.
But the burden on family members
can be substantial: many spouses and
adult children reduce their hours in
the labor force to care for a loved one.
Furthermore, many Americans mistakenly believe that social programs
will help them with long-term care
costs. Over a third think that Medicare
– the federal health insurance program for those 65 and older – will help
them, and a third think that their private health insurance plans will help
them.
In both cases, they are wrong. Med-
icaid – the federal/state health insurance program for the impoverished –
is the only major government program
that covers long-term care.
But because it only pays for expenses for the poor, an elderly individual must deplete his or her life’s
worth of earnings and savings before
being eligible for Medicaid.
One can buy private long-term care
insurance, but these products suffer
from a host of issues, including high
premiums and low benefit caps.
As a result, over 40% of long-term
care expenses are paid out of pocket
(compared to 17% of overall health
expenses for the elderly).
Our current system boils down to
two payment options: savings and
Medicaid (i.e. poverty). But there
should be another option: catastrophic
insurance.
While most elderly individuals do
not incur enormous long-term care
costs, five percent of individuals end
up spending over $260,000.
This is a classic example of an “insurable
event”: a small risk of
a financially devastating event.
Because the risk is
small but could affect
anyone, the insurance
premiums would be affordable since everyone would buy it.
The idea of catastrophic coverage is
simple: you pay for
your long-term care
expenses up to a certain point, and insurance kicks in if spending hits “catastrophic”
levels.
Private catastrophic coverage is
widely available in health insurance
markets, but is virtually non-existent
in long-term care.
In an attempt to spark demand for
private catastrophic long-term care insurance, the Robert Wood Johnson
Foundation sponsored the Partnership
for Long-Term Care program in 1993
which allows individuals to buy longterm insurance and to qualify for Medicaid while retaining assets equal to
the amount of the policy.
While thirty-nine states now offer
these policies, demand remains low
for this version of catastrophic coverage.
A system that better insures against
long-term care costs, particularly catastrophic costs, will be ever more important in our aging society.

T he transmission of these mutations to children — could provide
valuable insights for genetic counseling. These mutations cause more
than 200 diseases and contribute to
others such as diabetes, cancer,
Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's
disease. The study found greater
rates of the mitochondrial DNA variants in children born to older mothers, as well as in the mothers themselves.
Mitochondria are structures
within cells that produce energy and
that contain their own DNA.
"Many mitochondrial diseases affect more than one system in the
h u m a n b o d y, " s a i d K a t e r y n a
Makova, professor of biology and
one of the study's primary investigators. "They affect organs that re-
quire a lot of energy, including the
heart, skeletal muscle, and brain.
They are devastating diseases and
there is no cure, so our findings
about their transmission are very
important."
The multidisciplinary research
team set out to learn whether maternal age is important in the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA
(mtDNA) mutations, both in the
mother and in the child as a result of
transmission. Collaborating with Ian
Paul, a pediatrician at the Penn State
Milton S. Hershey Medical Center,
they took samples of blood and of
cells inside the cheek from 39
healthy mother-child pairs. Because
mtDNA is inherited only maternally,
paternal mtDNA was not a factor in
the study. Studying healthy individuals gave the researchers a baseline

Through DNA sequencing, they
found more mutations in blood and
cheek cells in the older mothers in
the study. Maternal age of study participants ranged from 25 to 59.
"This finding is not surprising,"
Makova said, "because as we age,
cells keep dividing, and therefore
we will have more mutant genes."
But finding greater rates of mutations in children born to the older
mothers did come as a surprise. The
researchers believe a similar mutation process is occurring both in the
cells of the mothers' bodies and in
their germ lines.
The study led to another important discovery about egg-cell development. Although it was known that
developing egg cells go through a
"bottleneck" period that decreases
the number of mtDNA molecules,
scientists didn't know how small or
large this bottleneck is.
"If the bottleneck is large, the
genetic makeup of the mother's mitochondria will be passed to her children," Makova explained. "However, if it is tiny — if there is a
severe decrease in mitochondrial
molecules during the egg-cell development — then the genetic
makeup of the child might differ
dramatically from that of the mother.
What we discovered is that this
bottleneck is indeed very small."
Knowledge about both the maternal age effect and the bottleneck
size is useful in family planning.
"We have some predictive power
now and can assist genetic counselors in advising couples about the
chances of mitochondrial diseases
being passed to the next generation,"
Makova said. "Everyone is concerned about Down syndrome because that is a common genetic problem. We have now added another set
of genetic disorders that also might
be affected by the age of the mother.
It is good for couples to have this
knowledge as they make familyplanning decisions."
Obesity accelerates aging of the liver
Using a recently developed
biomarker of aging known as an epigenetic clock, UCLA researchers
working closely with a
German team of investigators have found for
the first time that obesity greatly accelerates
aging of the liver.
This finding could
explain the early onset
of many age-related diseases, including liver
cancer, in people who
are obese.
Although it had long
been suspected that
obesity ages a person
faster, it hadn’t been
possible to prove the theory until
now, said study first author Steve
Horvath, a professor who holds joint
appointments in human genetics at
the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and in biostatistics at
the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
The research, conducted with
Jochen Hampe of the University
Hospital Dresden, showed that carrying excessive weight can negatively affect certain tissues in the
body.
“This is the first study that evaluated the effect of body weight on the
biological ages of a variety of human tissues,” Horvath said.
“Given the obesity epidemic in
the Western world, the results of
this study are highly relevant for
public health.”
The epigenetic clock, which
Horvath developed last year, uses a
previously unknown time-keeping
mechanism in the body to accurately
gauge the age of various human organs, tissues and cell types.
Horvath used the clock to measure the biological age of several
tissues, and it proved accurate in
matching biological to chronological age in leaner people.
But liver tissues from obese
people tended to have a higher biological age than the researchers expected.
He and his collaborators found
that although obesity doesn’t affect
the epigenetic age of fat, muscle or
blood tissue, found that, on average, the epigenetic age of the liver
increased by 3.3 years for every 10
body mass index, or BMI, units.
For example, a woman who is 5foot-5 and weighs 140 pounds has a
BMI of 23.3. A woman of the same
height who weighs 200 pounds has a
body mass index of 33.3.
The study found that her liver
would be about three years “older”
than that of the lighter woman.
“This does not sound like a lot,
but it is actually a very strong effect,” Horvath said.
“For some people, the age acceleration due to obesity
will be much more severe, even up to 10
years older.”
Horvath also found
that rapid weight loss
induced by bariatric
surgery did not reverse
the accelerated aging,
at least in the short
term.
Going forward,
Horvath and his team
want to determine if
the premature epigenetic aging of liver tissue in obese people can be prevented, which might help reduce
their risk for diseases like diabetes
and liver cancer.

Heed Message of "Save for
Retirement Week"
You won’t see it on the calendar, and it doesn’t inspire any greeting cards, but
National Save for Retirement Week is here again. The goal of this week is selfexplanatory, but what does it mean to you? Are you vulnerable to the possibility
of reaching retirement without sufficient financial resources? If so, how can
you ease this risk?
Let’s look at the “vulnerability” issue first. How prepared you’ll be for
retirement — or at least how prepared you think you’ll be — seems to depend,
not surprisingly, on whether you are currently participating in a retirement plan
such as a 401(k) or an IRA. Consider these statistics, taken from the Employee
Benefit Research Institute’s 2014 Retirement Confidence Survey:
• Nearly half of workers without a retirement plan were “not at all confident”
about their financial security in retirement, compared with only about one in 10
with a plan.
• 36% of workers say they have less than $1,000 in savings and investments.
Of this group, 73% said they and their spouse did not have a retirement plan,
compared to just 11% of those with a plan.
Clearly, it pays to contribute to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored
plan, such as a 403(b) or 457(b). And, even if you do have a 401(k) or similar
plan, you may want to consider funding a Roth or traditional IRA.
Besides contributing as much as you can afford to your retirement plans,
what else can you do to help boost your retirement savings?
For one thing, try to control your debts. It’s not always easy, but try to
consistently live within your means and make wise spending decisions. Every
dollar you don’t spend on debt payments could be going toward your retirement
savings.
While it’s essential that you save and invest for retirement, you can’t forget
other objectives you may have, such as helping pay for your children’s college
education. Of course, if you’re like the vast majority of people, you don’t have
unlimited resources — so working toward two major financial goals at the same
time can certainly be challenging. Nonetheless, a college education can still be
a springboard to a successful career, so you may well feel that you should do
everything within your power to help your kids through school.
How can you balance the two important goals of investing for your retirement and for your children’s college expenses? Your best move may be to start
saving for college just as soon as possible — even when your children are quite
young. By starting early, you’ll put time on your side, so you can put away
smaller amounts each year than if you waited until the years right before your
kids head off to school. Consider investing annually whatever amounts you can
afford to a tax-advantaged college savings vehicle, such as a 529 plan.
By investing as much as much as possible in your retirement plan, managing
your debt load and balancing your retirement goals with other key objectives,
you’ll be honoring the message of National Save for Retirement Week.

Thirty meter telescope
breaks ground
A groundbreaking and blessing ceremony on Tuesday, October 7, 2014
near the summit of Hawaii's Mauna Kea officially kicked off construction
on what will be the largest telescope on the planet: the Thirty Meter
Telescope.
When TMT begins operation in the early 2020s, it will shed light on
fundamental questions about the characteristics of exoplanets, the birth
of stars and galaxies, and the composition and expansion of the universe,
among other elusive cosmic mysteries.
"If you have a coin and flip it just
once, what does that tell you about the
odds of heads versus tails?" asks
Heather Knutson, assistant professor
of planetary science at Caltech. "It
tells you almost nothing. It's the same
with planetary systems," she says.
For as long as astronomers have
been looking to the skies, we have had
just one planetary system—our own—
to study in depth. That means we have
only gotten to know a handful of possible outcomes of the planet formation process, and we cannot say much
about whether the features observed
in our solar system are common or
rare when compared to planetary systems orbiting other stars.
That is beginning to change.
NASA's Kepler spacecraft, which
launched on a planet-hunting mission
in 2009, searched one small patch of
the sky and identified more than 4,000
candidate exoplanets—worlds orbiting stars other than our own sun. It
was the first survey to provide a definitive look at the relative frequency
of planets as a function of size. That is,
to ask, 'How common are gas giant
planets, like Jupiter, compared to planets that look a lot more like Earth?'
Kepler's results suggest that small
planets are much more common than
big ones. Interestingly, the most common planets are those that are just a bit
larger than Earth but smaller than Neptune—the so-called super-Earths.
However, despite being common in
our local corner of the galaxy, there
are no examples of super-Earths in our
own solar system. Our current observations tell us something about the
sizes and orbits of these newly discovered worlds, but we have very little
insight into their compositions.
"We are left with this situation
where super-Earths appear to be the
most common kind of exoplanet in the
galaxy, but we don't know what they're
made of," says Knutson.
There are a number of possibilities.
A super-Earth could be just that: a
bigger version of Earth—mostly rocky,
with an atmosphere. Then again, it
could be a mini-Neptune, with a large
rock-ice core encapsulated in a thick
envelope of hydrogen and helium. Or
it could be a water world—a rocky
core enveloped in a blanket of water
and perhaps an atmosphere composed
of steam (depending on the temperature of the planet).

way using currently available telescopes.
The first super-Earth that the astronomical community targeted for atmospheric studies was GJ 1214b, in

exoplanets, Knutson and her students
use space-based observatories like the
Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes
to learn more about the distant worlds.
For example, the researchers analyze
the starlight that filters through a
planet's atmosphere as it passes in front
of its star to learn about the composition of the atmosphere. Molecular species present in the planet's atmosphere
absorb light at particular wavelengths.
Therefore, by using Hubble and Spitzer
to view the planet and its atmosphere
at a number of different wavelengths,
the researchers can determine which
chemical compounds are present.
To date, nearly two dozen planets
have been characterized with this technique. These observations have shown
that the enormous gas giant exoplanets
known as hot-Jupiters have water, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, helium—
and potentially carbon dioxide and
methane—in their atmospheres.
However, right now super-Earths
are the hot topic. Unfortunately, although hundreds of super-Earths have
the constellation Ophiuchus. Information about it's atmosphere could
help astronomers determine which one
it was: a mini-Neptune's atmosphere
should contain lots of molecular hydrogen, while a water world's atmosphere should be water dominated.
GJ 1214b has been a popular target
for the Hubble Space Telescope since
its discovery in 2009. Disappointingly,
after a first Hubble campaign led by
researchers at the HarvardSmithsonian Center for Astrophysics,
the spectrum came back featureless—
there were no chemical signatures in
the atmosphere. After a second set of
more sensitive observations led by
researchers at the University of Chicago returned the same result, it became clear that a high cloud deck must
be masking the signature of absorption from the planet's atmosphere.
"It's exciting to know that there are
clouds on the planet, but the clouds
are getting in the way of what we
actually wanted to know, which is what
is this super-Earth made of?" explains
Knutson.
Now Knutson's team has studied a

Imagine icebergs as tall as the Eiffel
Tower silently drifting by Florida’s
balmy beaches.
Add a few braying walruses, and
mammoths grazing nearby on a broad
coastal plain, and there’s Ice Age
Florida for you. And believe it or not,
the icebergs are among the most indisputable parts of this picture.
During the last Ice Age, massive
chunks of ice plowed deep grooves
and furrows into the Atlantic seafloor
from South Carolina to southern
Florida. Named keel scours, after the
V-shaped structures on boats, the features record the passage of massive
glacial floods unleashed from Canada,
according to a study published in the
journal Nature Geoscience. The fartraveled floodwaters suggest future ice
sheet melting may be more complex
than previously thought, the researchers said.
“We can’t simply make the assumption that all of the cold, fresh water
from ice sheet melting stays in the
North Atlantic. Our results show that
smaller, coastal currents can be very
effective at redistributing this fresh
water and impacting a much larger
area,” said lead study author Jenna
Hill, a geologist at Coastal Carolina
University in Conway, South Carolina.
The icebergs likely came from one
of the huge glacial lakes, such as Lake
Agassiz, that flooded northern North
America during the ice ages. Now vanished, Lake Agassiz was once as big as
the Caspian Sea. Several large lakes
exist at any one time during the period
when ice sheets were at their peak,
between 22,000 and 12,000 years ago.
Ice dams walled off these glacial lakes
from the ocean. When the dams collapsed, catastrophic floods of frigid
freshwater spilled into the North Atlantic via the Gulf of St. Lawrence or
the Hudson Bay, carrying an enormous armada of icebergs.
When the huge floodwater pulse
reached the North Atlantic, the cold,
fresh water sat on top of hotter, salty
water, forcing the latter to sink, scientists think. This shut down the ocean’s
natural currents, which keep the northern hemisphere warm. The rapid shift
triggered a long cold snap.
But the discovery of icebergs in
Florida suggests not all of the ice age
floodwaters went east. Some of the icy
overflow headed south, beating back
the warm Gulf Stream and insulating
the icebergs on their journey southward.
“Previous research would have suggested the meltwater would have gone
much further north, so people weren’t
expecting the subtropics to become
fresher,” said study co-author Alan
Condron, an oceanographer at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
“This actually has enormous implications for that model and for what triggers climate change.”
Condron’s detailed models of ocean
currents off the shores of North
America suggest the glacial floods
could have carried icebergs from
Canada south to Florida in as little as
four months. This southward flow may
have temporarily shut down the Gulf
Stream, the current that warms the
East Coast and Europe.
The iceberg scours match up with
the modeling: The southwest-trending furrows indicates the icebergs
drifted opposite the direction of the
Gulf Stream current. The size and
shape of the features also rule out
other causes, such as river channels or
trawling by fishing boats.
Hill discovered the scours off the
coast of South Carolina, about 660
miles south of North America’s giant
Ice Age glaciers. The marks were found
as far south as the tip of Florida, more
than 3,100 miles away from Hudson
Bay. The furrows are beneath 500 to
660 feet of water, because sea level is
much higher today than it was during
the glacial period.
The scour marks are each as long as
a football field and as wide as a city
bus is long, measuring about 360 feet
long and 30 feet wide. They are up to
30 feet deep. Some sets of marks can
be traced for more than 18 miles. The
marks’ huge size implies that the icebergs were 100 feet tall by the time
they sailed past Florida, the researchers said.
As the icebergs neared the end of
their journey, some hit shallow ground
and got stuck, leaving behind a series
of circular pits. The hunks of ice would
melt, float forward, get stuck again
and then repeat the cycle, like a giant,
gleaming-white pogo stick.
Hill said the icebergs may also have
had a more local effect on Earth’s
landscape. Many of the places where
she found seafloor iceberg scours are
now rich habitats for deepwater corals, fish and other marine organisms.
“I have wondered if these corals were
living there when the icebergs came
through or if the iceberg scour grooves
have helped shape the habitat in some
way,” she told Live Science.

landscape that cost north of $15,000
and were available only in limited
quantities in specialty stores.
But now curved TVs are going for
$3,000 to $5000, and they’re rolling
out everywhere. You’ll be seeing more
advertisements for curved TVs this
fall. They look different from any-

second super-Earth: HD 97658b, in
the constellation Leo. The researchers
used Hubble to measure the decrease
in light when the planet passed in front
of its parent star over a range of infrared wavelengths in order to detect
small changes caused by water vapor
in the planet's atmosphere.
However, again the data came back
featureless. One explanation is that
HD 97658b is also enveloped in
clouds. However, Knutson says, it is
also possible that the planet has an
atmosphere that is lacking hydrogen.
It appears that clouds are going to
continue to pose a real challenge in
studies of super-Earths, so Knutson
and other researchers are working to
understand the composition of the
clouds around these planets and the
conditions under which they form. The
hope is that they will get to the point
where they can predict which worlds
will be shrouded in clouds. "If we can
then target planets that we think should
be cloud-free, that will help us make
optimal use of Hubble's time," she
says.
Looking to the future, Knutson says
there is only one more known superEarth that can be targeted for atmospheric studies with current telescopes.
But new surveys, such as NASA's extended Kepler K2 mission and the
Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite
(TESS), slated for launch in 2017,
should identify a large sample of new
targets.
Of course, she says, astronomers
would love to study exoplanets the
size of Earth, but these worlds are just
a bit too small and too difficult to
observe with Hubble and Spitzer.
NASA's James Webb Space Telescope,
which is scheduled for launch in 2018,
will provide the first opportunity to
study more Earth-like worlds. "SuperEarths are at the edge of what we can
study right now," Knutson says. "But
super-Earths are a good consolation
prize—they're interesting in their own
right, and they give us a chance to
explore new kinds of worlds with no
analog in our own solar system."

What looks like a mini space
shuttle, can fly itself for millions of
miles and goes by the name X-37B?
Must be a secret space weapon.
Or something to rocket next-generation spy gear into orbit.
Or maybe a decoy to keep China's
military guessing.
The purpose of the military's space
plane is classified, only fueling speculation about why it has been circling
Earth for nearly two years on this, the
program's third mission. The plane is
expected to land as soon as Wednesday at Vandenberg Air Force Base,
about 130 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
Here are some questions, and a few
answers, about the X-37B:
Q: OK, it's all very cloak and dagger. But what do we know about it?
A: The X-37B program has been an
orphan of sorts, bouncing since its
inception in 1999 between several federal agencies, NASA among them. It
now resides under the Air Force's
Rapid Capabilities Office. There are
two of these robotic planes, and the
one due to land launched on the back
of an Atlas V rocket from Cape
Canaveral, Florida, on Dec. 11, 2012.
It stands 9 1/2 feet tall and is just over
29 feet long, with a wingspan under 15
feet. It weighs 11,000-pounds. And it
has solar panels that unfurl to charge
its batteries once in orbit.
Q: And what don't we know?
A: Just about everything else. For
starters, what it has been doing up in
space. Speculation centers on the idea
that its relatively small cargo bay was
used to ferry sensors that can capture
detailed images or communications on
Earth — for example, to track Iran's
nuclear program or suspected terrorists.
That makes sense to Harvard University astrophysicist Jonathan
McDowell, who notes that any device
could be returned, allowing scientists
to build a better model based on the
wear and tear it experienced from the
radiation and debris outside the Earth's
atmosphere.
Another theory, favored by veteran
space policy analyst John Pike, is that
the program is designed to "give the
Chinese a brain cootie" trying to figure out what it's for. Under that thinking, China would save to spend (and
waste) time and resources trying to
counteract a range of possibilities.

Broker pleads
guilty in scam
A South Florida broker has become
the latest person to plead guilty in the
$1.2 billion Ponzi scheme operated by
convicted swindler Scott Rothstein.
Richard Pearson of Miami pleaded
guilty last week to wire fraud conspiracy. Pearson faces up to five years
in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 9.
Court documents show Pearson
acted as a broker for investments in
some phony legal settlements peddled
by Rothstein, a former lawyer. In return, investors paid Pearson a sales
commission.
One such group of investors agreed
in 2009 to put their money in five of
Rothstein’s purported legal settlements. That group wound up losing
about $2.4 million.

decries nation's
'moral bankruptcy'
There is a “moral bankruptcy” that’s
settled into leadership of America in
the White House and throughout Washington, D.C., Dr. Alveda King—the
niece of Martin Luther King, Jr.—said
in an interview Friday morning.
“All of our leaders—or many of
our leaders—are just morally bankrupt right now,” King said when asked
if President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder have helped or hurt
the black community in America.
“They’re not calling on God. We still
stay ‘In God We Trust’ and ‘One Nation Under God’ but we’re not practicing that. We need to call on God.
There’s a moral bankruptcy in this
country and we really need to come
back to God.”
Dr. King is part of an effort that will
be announced publicly early next week
by various conservative black, Hispanic and Tea Party leaders to reach
out to the black community and get
them engaged in an effort to help urban centers reject big government in
favor of smaller, limited government.
The project, called “Restore The
Dream 2014,” includes other black
leaders like TheTeaParty.net’s Niger
Innis, FreedomWorks’ the Rev. C.L.
Bryant, radio host Wayne Dupree,
Conservative Campaign Committee
chairman Lloyd Marcus, Conservative Review president Deneen Borelli,
columnist Star Parker, former U.N.
Commission on Civil Rights ambassador Ken Blackwell, and others.
In an interview, Innis—whose father Roy Innis has led the Congress of
Racial Equality (CORE), one of the
major organizations behind the Civil
Rights movement, since 1968—said
that progressive and big government
policies have created a “welfare state
that has largely not only destroyed the
black and increasingly so Latino—
and American family generally—they
have killed the types of incentives that
had led people to achieve and build a
better life for themselves.”
“You can have opportunity right in
front of your door but you’re terrified
to open it because you’re a victim,”
Innis said. “So those two realities that
you have now since a leviathan of the
federal government that is trying to
fashion itself as a cradle-to-grave big
daddy government—going to take care
of you from cradle to grave and give
you all sorts of disincentives to climbing that economic ladder, and by the
way if you do climb that economic
ladder they’re going to punish you
punitively with taxes that are going to
undermine you.”
“If you dare want to open up a
business, they’re going to cripple you
with regulations and taxes and they’re
going to make it easier for you to be a
rational human being and just get government benefits rather than being a
liberated individual who can climb
that economic ladder,” he continued.
“So you have that real but not concrete
phenomenon of big government mentality crippling you and then you have
on a parallel track victimization syndrome overriding it that says—you
pick the minority—‘you are a victim
and you are the underdog so you can
never achieve.’ That is a dangerous
recipe and it is a recipe that has dominated urban centers for more than 50
years and what we’re trying to do is
liberate them.”
King said that economic indicators
show that during Obama’s presidency,
things have gotten dramatically worse
for black Americans.
“The data is going to indicate black
people lost out in every single leading
economic category during the Obama
years,” King told Breitbart News, noting that liberal commentator Tavis
Smiley agrees with her and that they’re
not trying to “demonize” or “cast aspersions” on Obama, but the truth
needs to be told. “That’s terrible.
There’s nothing that’s been done to
enhance our lives but there’s all sorts
of things that were done to [give us
stuff] like free access to abortion, free
birth control in a healthcare clinic. But
that’s nothing that’s going to help us
economically, intellectually, physically health-wise and otherwise—
there’s nothing being done for us.
Black home ownership is 31 percent
less than the rest of the country. Poverty rates have increased from 12 percent to 16.1 percent. Income for blacks
is $20,000 less than the national average. Thirty-five percent of young
blacks are out of work.”
That’s just the beginning of the
black community’s woes under
Obama, she said. Education, immigration, and health concerns are
abound too.
“I’m not so locked into a political
party—Republican, Democrat, independent—it doesn’t matter to me what
your party affiliation happens to be,”
King said. “We just need to vote and
have common
sense and good
morals when we
elect our people.
We need hope.
We need for the
lights to come
back on. We need
to shine the light
of the Lord and
the love of the
Lord back onto Alveida King
the country. We
need a restoration, and that’s how we
can restore the dream.”
King pointed Breitbart News to her
uncle’s famous “Give Us The Ballot”
speech, which he delivered in May
1957 in Washington, D.C., and discussed how he the black community
could effectuate change by voting.
“Give us the ballot, and we will no
longer have to worry the federal government about our basic rights,” Martin Luther King, Jr., said in that speech.
“Give us the ballot, and we will no
longer plead to the federal government for passage of an anti-lynching
law; we will by the power of our vote
write the law on the statute books of
the South and bring an end to the
dastardly acts of the hooded perpetrators of violence. Give us the ballot,
and we will transform the salient misdeeds of bloodthirsty mobs into the
calculated good deeds of orderly citizens.”
King said that the black community
needs to do the same today to use the
ballot to change the liberal policies
that are hurting them.
“We have to now in this century
understand what my uncle and father
talked about, which is that we are part
of an equal community where everyone has an equal place in society,”
King said. “Giving people government
handouts without dignity, that’s not
working. Giving people HHS mandate healthcare with free contraceptives and free abortions, that’s not
going to help people. So we want to do
more. We want our children better
educated. We want better education,
more jobs, opportunity, so people can
contribute to society—so those are our
goals.”
King also said she agrees with her
aunt Coretta Scott King, MLK’s wife,
who in 1991 wrote a letter to Sen.
Orrin Hatch (R-UT) asking him to
actually enforce immigration laws so
that illegal aliens wouldn’t have a
“devastating impact” on blacks by taking jobs away from them.
“I did go down to the border with
Glenn Beck because actually I was
concerned about the children,” King
said. “I do not agree with open borders
and you’ve got people who take these
little children, cut them up and fill
them with drugs then sew them back
up and send them over here. I did want
the children to be fed, I wanted them
to have a warm meal and try to get
them back home. I do not support
open borders and I certainly agree with
my aunt on that.”
Man injured in
Pompano boat
explosion
A man was severely burned in a
boat explosion early Monday morning
in Pompano Beach.
The explosion and fire, aboard the
“Sub-BOAT-Ah.” occurred around
2:15 a.m. near the Hillsboro Inlet.
Investigators say 32-year old Lukas
Correa, who was on the 30-foot cruiser
when it went up in flames, showed up
at Broward Health North with burns.
From there he was airlifted to the burn
unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Joseph Settembrino was loading up
his boat to go fishing when he heard an
explosion.
“In the morning, you don’t expect
to hear a boom that loud. I saw the
flames immediately from all the way
across the street. I jumped in my boat
and came over here,” said Settembrino.
“The boat was a mass of flames shooting 50 feet in the air. And I couldn’t
get any closer than 100, 150 feet from
it, it was just too hot.”
Correa said anyone else who may
have been on the boat was gone.
“There was a call for help, a scream,
that’s when I hurried up and loaded
my boat to see what I could do to help
out. When I got here, no one was
here,” said Settembrino.
When firefighters arrived they
found the boat they found it fully engulfed in flames. There was no one on
board and divers didn’t find anyone in
the surrounding waters.
Settenbrino said, “When I heard it
happen, I said if there’s anybody near
this boat there’s no way they’d survive it. It was just so intense."
