This is a guide to registering yourself to use Southampton City Council’s online services for
Benefits and Council Tax. Firstly you will need to connect to the internet and enter the
website address of:
www.southampton.gov.uk
This will bring up the following homepage for ‘Southampton City Council’. On this page you
will need to select the option of ‘Benefits and Welfare’ or ‘Housing and Council Tax’.
If you select Benefits and Welfare, Self Service is located on the left hand side

Benefit Services are part of the Transaction Services Division of the Corporate Services Directorate.
This will take you to the Self Service and forms page. Select: ‘Log into or register for a
benefits account’ at the top of the list on the page.
If you select Housing and Council Tax Self Service is accessed by selecting: ‘Manage your
account online’.

This will take you to the Self Service Home page, where you can select the option of
‘Register’
On the next page, select Register Now to start the registration process:
Once in the next page you will need to enter your personal details, ensuring that you fill in all
the fields, otherwise you will not be able to continue with the registration process

On this page you can select which services you wish to sign up for (e.g. Council Tax,
Housing Benefits etc) – you do not have to select a service at this stage, you can complete
your registration and come back to this page.
To add a service at this stage, click on the heading for the service you want to add:
A tick will appear to show you have selected that service:

Once you have chosen a service you will need to link it to your accounts.
If you added a service during your registration, you will see the service on your My Services
page. If not you can use the Add Service button to add services to your account.
To link your council tax account to your Self Service account: enter your account
reference number (found on your bill) into the Reference Number field. Then click on Access
Now:
To link your benefit claim to your Self Service account: enter your claim reference
number (found on your letters) into the Reference Number field. Then click on Access Now:
To link your tenant’s benefit claim to your Self Service account: enter your landlord
creditor reference number (found on your payment schedules) into the Reference Number
field. Then click on Access Now:

You will be asked a number of security questions to enable you to link your account/ claim:
You will need to answer all of the questions marked with a * before you can continue. Once
you have answered enough questions to continue a green tick will appear:
Click on Next to complete your registration; a new page will appear to confirm your
registration is complete:
At this point you can decide whether to sign up to e-notifications or e- billing.

If you could not answer enough questions to complete your registration, tick the ‘I don’t have
enough information to continue’ box
You will be directed to a page where you can request a PIN for your account:
Click on Send me a PIN, You will then be sent in the post a letter with your pin number.
Please note that we are unable to give PIN numbers over the phone or via email.
Please do not try to log in again until you have received your PIN through the post.

Once you have received your pin letter in the post you can then logon to the Southampton
City Councils website again by following the earlier instructions at the start of this guide.
On the following screen you will need to select the option to Sign in:
Here you will need to input your user name & two characters from your password:
On the following screen you will then need to enter the answer to your security question:

On the My Services home page, you will need to enter your benefit claim reference number
and the PIN number you were sent through the post:
Click on Add Account, you will then see confirmation that your account has been added
successfully:
