her spirit keep on. And every
child that’s helped and every
family that’s helped, it’s a
way of still keeping her love
alive and sharing a piece of
her – it means the world to me
and our community.”
The foundation has
many generous sponsors, with
Union General Hospital, Inc.
providing the largest amount
of financial support.
“We’ve had Glenda
Gooch House for a number
of years,” said Union General
Hospital CEO Mike Gowder.
“This is just another opportunity for us to be able to support
the Glenda Gooch Foundation
that does so many wonderful
things for local kids.”
Donations for the silent
auction were plentiful and
diverse, ranging from autographed sports memorabilia
from former Atlanta Braves
Manager Dave Bristol and
racecar driver Chase Elliott,
to a Mossberg 30-30 rifle.
One of the more extravagant donations came from
Bill and Cindy Elliott, who
contributed a four-night stay
at a “luxurious condominium
in Vail, Colorado,” valued at
$5,600.
But there was something for everyone, even music lovers, as Gooch family
friend Dr. John Kelley, a car-
diologist, offered tickets and
backstage passes to any Lady
Antebellum concert good
through 2015. Kelley’s son,
Charles, is a member of the
famed Country Music group.
Casino games included
blackjack, roulette, craps
and poker, and a DJ kept the
gala and dance floor moving
throughout the night as funds
were pledged by patrons.
“I work at the schools,
so I see the need,” said Kris
and Glenda Gooch’s friend
Melinda Colwell. “There are
so many kids who have nothing – this way, they can have
a Christmas just like anybody
else.”
Glenda’s best friend
Kalan Adams, who oversees
the foundation, and Glenda’s
Aunt Kayce Burks, organized
the gala, and the community
turned out in tour-de-force of
support Saturday night.
“It’s really exciting just
to see this many people out sup-
porting one of the best causes
in the county, supporting our
kids and their Christmases,”
said Union County Sole Commissioner Lamar Paris. “It’s
amazing how they can get this
many people out, because everybody loved Glenda. So, I’m
just proud to be a little part of
it, to be here.”
Glenda may not have
been blessed with great health
in her lifetime, but she possessed a tremendous, affecting spirit that continues to this
day.
“There were a lot more
days she felt bad than there
were good, but she would
never let it show – you’d never know any difference from a
good day or a bad day,” said
family friend Bobby King.
“She was a very strong person and loved living – she
taught me to live every day to
its fullest, because you don’t
know if you’re going to get
tomorrow.”

The Biskit Eatin' Contest and other games began

The Pole Climbin', the
Log Sawin', the Rock Throw,
Baccur Spittin' contests, along
with the Biskit Eatin' contest
are all crowd favorites that lasted throughout the afternoon.
As for the main attraction, the sorghum syrup sold
out once again.
“We sold out again and
that's good and bad,” Bridges
said. “The frost got part of
our crop so we had to play
with what Mother Nature
gave us. But overall it was a
great weekend and everything
went well. We received a lot
of comments saying this was
the best Sorghum Festival that
we've had.”
The fun lasted until
5 p.m. on both days with a
square dance taking place on
Saturday night at 8 p.m. While
the festival takes a 51-week
break after 5 p.m. on Sunday,
the preparation begins almost
immediately for the 46th Sorghum Festival in 2015.
“We're already making
plans for next year,” Bridges
said. “We've already lined up
some musical acts that we really liked. Many of the vendors told us that they would
be back. It's already looking
really good for next year and
we're very excited.”
The festival has become
synonymous with October in
Blairsville, and after 45 years
of music, fun, and games, the
festival must be doing something right.
It's also an added bonus
that the residents of Union
County are willing to volunteer their time to keep the festival an October tradition for
45 years and beyond.
“I would like to thank
everyone from the community and everyone who came
out and helped,” Bridges said.
“We couldn't do it without
them.”
