Office of Health Professions Advising: Prerequisite Courses
Office of Health Professions Advising: http://prehealth.duke.edu Prerequisite Courses Individual health professions schools set their own admission requirements. A very few schools list no specific courses for admission; however, they expect their applicants to have mastered the information covered in the standardized admissions tests, such as the MCAT for medicine and the DAT for dentistry. Many (but not all) prehealth schools in the United States require the following courses. It is very important to check with individual schools and programs. Grades of C or higher are required by most, if not all schools, for prerequisite courses. Course # Semesters Duke Equivalent (see below regarding placement, old numbers are in brackets) As a minimum, two biology courses with lab. Please note that some schools require specific biology courses. For example, some dental schools want additional coursework in anatomy 2 semesters with and/or microbiology. For MCAT test Biology lab preparation we recommend BIOLOGY 201L[101L] and BIOLOGY 202L[102L] + a physiology course (BIOLOGY 329L[151L], BME 244L[144L], EVANTH 330[155], OR CELLBIO 503[203]). Varies, may be no math MATH 105L[25L]/MATH 106L[26L] or requirement, one MATH 111L[31L] +/- MATH 112L[32L] or semester, two MATH 122L[41L]. If you need to take a semesters, 1 statistics course, we recommend STA 101[101], Calculus calculus* plus 1 102[102], 111[103], BIOLOGY 204[189], or statistics course. PSY 201[117].(*Prehealth physics courses at Check Duke require knowledge of calculus through individual Math 111[31L]) school sites. To fulfill the Chemistry prerequisites, choose one of the following sequences:1) For 4 semesters with students who have not taken a year of high lab. school chemistry, and/or have a Math SAT I Biochemistry score of 630 or lower, the recommended will be a tested prehealth chemistry sequence is: CHEM Chemistry (General subject area on 99D[20D] –> CHEM 101DL[31L] –> CHEM & Organic) For the MCAT 2015 201DL[151L] –> CHEM 202L[152L] –> further placement exam so we CHEM 210DL[32L]. We strongly recommend information, see the encourage all taking BIOCHEM 301[227] as well. 2) For Chemistry prehealth students who have taken at least a year of Department website students to take high school chemistry, have a Math SAT I BIOCHEM score of greater than 630, and who have an 301[227] prior AP Chemistry score of 3 or less, the to taking the recommended prehealth chemistry sequence MCAT 2015. is: CHEM 101DL[31L] –> CHEM 201DL[151L] –> CHEM 202L[152L] –> CHEM 210DL[32L]. We strongly recommend English Physics taking BIOCHEM 301[227] as well. 3) For students with an AP Chem Score = 4: (CHEM 18 [20] AP Credit) CHEM 110DL[43L] –> CHEM 201DL[151L] –> CHEM 202L[152L] –> BIOCHEM 301[227]; OR CHEM 101DL[31L] –> CHEM 201L[151L] –> CHEM 202L[152L] –>CHEM 210DL[32L] (NOTE: You will lose your AP credit.) We strongly recommend taking BIOCHEM 301[227] especially for MCAT 2015 preparation.4) For students with an AP Chem Score = 5: (CHEM 19 [21] AP Credit): CHEM 201DL[151L] –> CHEM 202L[152L] – > BIOCHEM 301[227] WRITING 101[20] + one other English or 2 semesters literature course PHYSICS 141L[53L]/142L[54L] for life sciences majors and prehealth students, 2 semesters with PHYSICS 161L[41L]/162L[42L] for physics lab majors, PHYSICS 151L[61L], 152L[62L], +/153L[63L] for engineering students NOTES: Important, Please Read • You should check requirements on the websites of specific schools that are of interest to you. You may want to focus on those public and private schools in your state of residence. Valuable resources include Medical School Admission Requirements, ADEA Official Guide to Dental Schools, and Veterinary Medical School Admissions Requirements. • As noted above, some schools require or strongly recommend courses in biochemistry and statistics. Other courses that might be required or strongly recommended include those in the humanities, social sciences and computer science. Students taking the MCAT 2015 are encouraged to take introductory psychology and sociology courses. • Most schools require two semesters of biology, but a few, such as the University of Texas system, require four semesters, 2 with lab. Biochemistry counts as one biology or chemistry course at most UT schools. • While health professions schools accept students from a wide range of majors, they expect applicants to have taken science courses that are designed for science majors. They recommend that you do not take science courses that are intended primarily for non-science majors (such as CHEM 91[83]). • Students seeking admission to what are considered by some to be the most highly selective health professions schools should plan to pursue a demanding curriculum. Advanced course work, including graduate-level courses (at Duke these are courses numbered 500[200] and above), semester overloads, and scholarship in the form of independent research is expected of successful applicants to these schools. A note to pre-veterinary students: Many veterinary schools require further specific course work in natural and animal science such as genetics, microbiology, and one or two courses in animal science and/or nutrition. The latter two subjects are not offered at Duke. Pre-veterinary students may enroll in animal science and nutrition at North Carolina State University in Raleigh during the regular fall or spring terms as part of the inter-institutional agreement (visit: http://trinity.duke.edu/academic-requirements?p=inter-institutional-courses). Alternatively, you may enroll in an accredited institution in the summer.
