Questions
In Summary…The Data Behind
the Partnership
• Replacing our baby boomers will be a
challenge
• While replacing them, these same baby
boomers will put demands on health care
services
• Health care looking at a “Perfect Storm”
• We needed to begin planting seeds with a
younger audience…
The Early Years of Career
Education
• Recruitment Strategies
• List of Programs
• Flying Wedge…program philosophy
Recruitment Strategies - Career
Awareness Programs
• Initiated in 2001 as a response to changing workforce
demographics and research into perceptions by area
students of Mayo as a career option
• Imperative to commit resources to assist students
with career exploration to help assure adequate
supply of qualified health care professionals in the
future
• Emphasis on education and industry partnerships to
promote career exploration/confirmation by students
• Supported by leadership as long term investment
essential to future recruitment success
Career Awareness Program Design
• Offer range of program experiences from 6th grade
through early college
• Programs for younger students focus on developing
awareness of career options, emphasizing study habits
and stimulating interest in science and math classes
• Programs for grades 10-12 focus on above as well as
affirming choice of planned major in college or career
• Students required to do some prep work to qualify to
participate in programs to assure a focused audience –
has been well received by teachers, parents and
students

•Building a Partnership/Examples
A Cup of Coffee…Shared Focus
• Regular Meetings for Relationship/Career
Education Development
• Everyone tends to bring an agenda…
• We had to trust each other…
• Shared Focus: Students
– Mayo’s mission: The Needs of the Patient Comes
First
– ”The Needs of the Students Comes First”
• Our Resources:
– Teachers
– Mayo Clinic employees and medical knowledge
Building a Partnerships
• Why?
– Foundations for success: multiply
resources
– Favorable environment for continuous
improvement: different views
– Specialization of skills: expertise of each
partner
• BECAUSE WE COULD NOT DO THIS
ALONE
Building Partnerships
• Signs of an effective partnership:
– School and business representatives know each
other on a first name basis
– Regular communication; open and respectful
– Members of the partnership ask each other to
serve on committees
– School administration solicit input from business
partners before major decisions
– Business members are active in the school
– Each partner believes it receives as much as it
gives
