In over 90 years, Calligaris has witnessed, or better, has encouraged
many changes. To be more precise, we have inaugurated these
changes ourselves by devising and then creating furniture and
accessories which enter people’s homes, giving rise to unique
environments that describe the people who inhabit them.
If constant innovation and evolution have always characterised
the way we work, it is because we have a clear idea of the values
we strive for. We can experiment, change and innovate because we
know who we are and what our brand represents to our customers:
a guarantee of quality and creativity, a mix between contemporary
design and flexibility.
These are the key concepts that make up our DNA as an
international company with strong Italian roots: this is Italian
smart design by Calligaris. What does “smart” mean to us?
Smart is harmony between technique and aesthetics, rationality
and emotions.
Smart means knowing how to live, it expresses a new sensibility,
which involves preferring what is right for us and for the feel of
our brand without seeking to conform or necessarily to stand out.
Calligaris’ “Smart design” offers a large and varied choice of
functional furniture, with a sober yet perpetually contemporary
style, that leaves room for the sensibility and taste of each customer,
by mixing well with other shapes, colours and materials, in an
endless interplay of possibilities.

alligaris was founded by Antonio Calligaris in 1923 in Manzano
(Udine province) as a small artisan workshop dealing with the
production of one chair model: Marocca. It featured a wooden frame
and a handwoven rush seat, with a typical style originated in the
Manzano area, later identified as “the chair district”. Cutting and
assembly of wooden parts were male activities, while weaving was
carried out by women working at home. A complete woven seat took
about 2 hours of work.
During the 50’s, Antonio’s son, Romeo, continued and developed his
father’s business, taking advantage of the post war economic boom.
I
t was during the 60’s that the third generation of the Calligaris
family took over the company: Alessandro and Walter
believed in an automatic straw weaving machine that took
1 minute and 20 seconds to weave a chair using synthetic fibres
similar to straw.
During the following years the productive capacity continued
to grow and the small business became a well structured
industry, the first catalogue was printed and foreign exports
began. From this moment on, Calligaris started selling its
products through a network of retailers all over Italy and Europe.
The range of products was enlarged to include tables,
accessories and cabinets.
In October 1986 Alessandro Calligaris took over the presidency
of the company and full responsibility for the management.
During these years, Calligaris embraced the most innovative
technologies and started using materials other than wood:
plastic, metal, fabrics, methacrylate and glass.
The following years marked the international development
of the company, the first overseas branches are opened,
the product range is further expanded with the addition
of sofas and beds, objects and lighting.

T
oday Calligaris has a distribution network in over
90 countries made up of 550 retail outlets, including 4
Flagship stores and 80 monobrand shops.
All stores display a wide selection of Calligaris products.
The stores are elegant, modern spaces, designed and
produced to show the philosophy of Italian Smart Design:
design products that are not only beautiful and artfully
created, but also ergonomic, versatile, designed to simplify
everyday life.
In Calligaris shops, an interactive totem allows customers
to view all catalogue images and interact with them.
Moreover, customers can explore the whole range of
products, create fully customised images choosing the
finishes that best suit their style.
The current
physiognomy of Calligaris
is born from the union between
its artisanal tradition, synonymous
with quality, care and Italian style and
the industrialisation that has made it a
leader in the furniture industry. Today
the Calligaris Group has 600 employees,
operating subsidiaries in the United States,
Japan, Russia, France, Germany and the
United Kingdom and five manufacturing
plants, including one in Croatia.
It distributes its products with over
800 catalogue products in 90
countries worldwide.

example, featuring a group of
young Italian designers charged
with the creation of a full range
of complements and accessories.
The project encouraged the
rare and precious combination
of creativity and the production
process. Each one of these
designers has offered a personal
and creative interpretation of
smartness, translating this concept
in objects brimming with colour
and energy. All the CODE items,
which are obviously part of the
Calligaris world, blend perfectly
in our style, with a creative and
suggestive mix of harmonious
or contrasting effects.

very detail of our products is the result of a
careful team work, involving expert project
makers and designers. Our technical know-how
and inventiveness, combined with knowledge of
furniture trends produces extraordinary results.
Designers help contribute to the development
of new models with their creativity. Ideas that
are generated from this collaboration are
transformed into prototypes, and then, at the
end of a long process of testing and fine-tuning,
into products that appear in homes around the
world. The aesthetics go hand-in-hand with
ergonomics; a chair is first and foremost a piece
of furniture that must offer the right support and
guarantee safety. The selection of materials
is also essential, because quality is important
to us and we want our products to be made of
materials which are not only beautiful but also
safe and resistant.
As a result, we select the best wood, and
work with leading companies using the latest
generation of plastics to develop innovative
materials that, along with comfort and
aesthetics, also allow us to craft special finishes
and obtain new colours.
We carefully choose fabrics and leathers,
selecting those that will last long and match
contemporary tastes that communicate Italian
style to the world.
We work with metal, bending it to the

he living room is perhaps the area
that has changed most to suit the needs
of its occupants, from a more formal room
to a shared space. With the increase in open
plan living, the living room has become an all
encompassing environment for every activity.
This does not mean that the living room cannot
have its own clearly defined role; on the contrary,
the contemporary living room manages to
integrate furniture that makes it unique and
functional. Elegant touches are mixed with
everyday objects; soft materials add warmth
to the room and fine details stand out all
complementing one another.

Lounge Collection
Lounge is a sofa which offers great potential for composition due to the many modules
available. It also offers modules with or without integrated or separate seat cushion bases,
both personalised by a chequer stitching pattern. It has a strictly defined shape yet with

The art
of making sofas
A SOFA IS MUCH MORE THAN A SIMPLE PIECE OF UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE.

The special NATUR SPHERE SYSTEM treatment
based on inert nanospheres protects the fabric
against dust, repels stubborn stains and keeps it
looking new and feeling soft for longer.

The SILVER PROTECTION silver ion treatment
has anti-microbial, antibacterial and antifungal
properties. SILVER PROTECTION acts as a
protective shield, disinfecting the treated
fabric, resisting the formation of unpleasant
smells and preventing the development of
allergic phenomena.
The unique ceramics used by
Calligaris for its table tops are
obtained by coupling a 3 mm
thick slab of porcelain stoneware
to an 8mm tempered float glass.
These surfaces are exceptionally
resistant to scratches, impacts,
stains, thermal shocks and
chemicals.
As they don’t absorb liquids nor
release harmful substances,
they are also easy to clean and
very hygienic.
The Calligaris ceramic finishes
include: white, stone grey,
