There will be no formal classes except for VCE Units 3 & 4 Examinations Australian Maths Competition Victorian Young Leaders to China Program House Plays Immunisation Program 2015 Valedictory Photos British Parliamentary Debating Sports Report Year 12 Examinations Our Year 12 Examinations began this week with English, Economics, Biology and Further Mathematics. Many of our Year 12 students have been visiting the school over the last few days to meet with teachers and to receive final advice and last minute tips. We have all been impressed by the preparation of this year’s Senior class and are confident that they will do their best over this examination period. We offer them our full support and we look forward to celebrating their results with them on Monday 15 December 2014. Grandparents’ Day United Nations Public Speaking Competition On Tuesday 28 October, we welcomed approximately 400 grandparents and family friends of boys from all levels to our school. They were given a tour of the school by their grandsons, attended a concert involving musicians from all sections of the school, and then were able to spend and enjoyable lunch together in the Performing Arts Complex. This is always a very important day in our busy calendar but one that is most rewarding. Our students are always so delighted to be able to show their school to their grandparents and family. I thank and appreciate all those staff, students and parents who work to make the day a great success, in particular Mr Ken Schwab, Mrs Elizabeth Board and the Development Office staff, and to the members of the CGS Auxiliary for their assistance. I know that the students who had the opportunity to show their Grandparents around the school were very proud to do so and I hope that the Grandparents enjoyed their day too. A large number of these students received Credit, Distinction or High Distinction certificates. The very top students, those who scored in the top 0.3% of students in Victoria, received a prize. This year, I am pleased to announce that we have five prize recipients: Danny Chen (Year 9) and Yueyang Chen, Mike Ji, Leo Wan and Nicholas Wong (all in Year 10). Congratulations to all five students who were presented with their prizes at yesterday’s Assembly. Junior School Victorian Young Leaders to China Program Regional Athletics 2014 Fourteen students, accompanied by Mrs Lynn Shiau, recently participated in a six-week Victorian Young Leaders to China Program, initiated by the state government. The program was an opportunity to be part of a life-changing international education experience aimed at students developing capabilities for modern ways of living, thinking and working. It provides the students with a rich learning program, assisting them in developing and demonstrating leadership skills, and empowering them to make an active contribution to their schools and communities as young leaders. The students increased their global knowledge, intercultural understanding and developed thinking and relationship skills for engaging in a global context, as well as improving their language skills in Mandarin. The boys attended pre and post-program seminars to assist in warming them up to the experiences and challenges they were likely to face, as well as a debrief on their return, which also included presentations of their chosen project tasks undertaken as a consequence of their experiences in China. Congratulations to the following fourteen boys who were presented with their certifications of completion at yesterday’s Assembly, in recognition and acknowledgement of the work they did Sport Music Careers Calendar Support Groups Spectemur Term 3 Camberwell Grammar School 55 Mont Albert Road Canterbury Victoria 3126 T +61 3 9835 1777 [email protected] www.cgs.vic.edu.au Page 1 Contents Headmaster Year 12 Examinations Grandparents’ Day Australian Maths Competition Victorian Young Leaders to China Program House Plays Immunisation Program 2015 Valedictory Photos British Parliamentary Debating Sports Report English Year 12 English Students 2015 Middle School Year 8 Social Run/Walk for Koala Kids United Nations Public Speaking Competition National Touch Rugby Competition Queensland Open Water Championships State Athletics Championships House Swimming Carnival Long Weekend Junior School Regional Athletics 2014 Sport Music Careers Calendar Support Groups Spectemur Term 3 in preparing for and undertaking this intensive six-week program to China: Ray-en Bishop, Danny Chen, William Chen, Ryan Chow, Joseph Hao, Karl Huang, Jack Jaynes, Samuel Jiang, Jonathan Lim, Ethan Pang, Jay Tee, Kevin Wang, Jeremy Yi and Sam Yu (all Year 9). Alliance Françoise Competition 2014 Earlier this year, 39 students of French in Years 11 and 12 participated in the annual French orals competition conducted by the Alliance Françoise de Melbourne. This year our students received a total of 16 Credits, 6 Distinctions and 5 High Distinctions. All students are to be congratulated for participating so enthusiastically in this year’s competition. Three of our Year 12 Leavers, Michael Anderson, Louis Cerdan and Harry Purves were awarded perfect scores in the first round of the competition and were subsequently invited to participate in the finals. At yesterday’s Assembly, I had the pleasure in presenting achievement certificates to Year 11 students Max Harper, Andrew Masanauskas and Augustine Nguyen who each scored a High Distinction in this year’s competition. House Plays The criteria for this year’s House Play Festival was that they be ‘One-Act Plays’ and each House is to be commended on producing entertaining plays of a very high calibre. The Semi-Finals were held on Tuesday 14 October and the adjudicators, Ms Wood and Mr Hall, whittled down the competition to just four Houses: Bridgland, Robinson, Steven and Summons to do battle in the finals. With Joel Hrbek (Year 12) as Masters of Ceremonies, and this year’s House Play Finals adjudication by Mr Gough and our special guest and Old Boy Mr Ben Giraud, the final results saw Bridgland House awarded 1st place, Summons 2nd, Steven 3rd, Robinson 4th, Macneil 5th, Schofield in 6th place, Derham in 7th place and Clifford in 8th. Congratulates to Hans Anjou and Brian Kim (both Year 10) of Bridgland for their direction and their adaptation called The Assassination. British Parliamentary Debating 2014 Sports Report At a recent Debaters’ Association of Victoria Regional British Parliamentary Round (Junior Section), Vignesh Alagappan and Adrian Xu (both Year 9) placed first in the competition qualifying for the State Final. Vignesh was also awarded best speaker of the competition. Congratulation to both boys for their public speaking skills and reaching the Final against MLC, Melbourne High School and Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar. English Sports Report Year 12 English Students 2015 Camberwell made a positive start to the Summer Season with many encouraging performances over the weekend. The First Tennis team faced last season’s runners up Ivanhoe in their second match for the 2014/15 season. Playing at Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open, the boys were keen to record a second win. Alek Harper and Stephen Chen (both Year 9) recorded two more wins in their double matches, remaining undefeated as a pairing for the season. Singles matches were extremely tight, with six out of eight sets going to a tiebreak. Unfortunately Camberwell were unable to capitalise on their opportunities, eventually succumbing to Ivanhoe, six sets to ten. The 10A Tennis team beat Ivanhoe convincingly, winning 8 sets to 4. Camberwell’s dominance at the net was pivotal in securing three wins in the doubles matches, the boys displaying impressive composure to win three tiebreaks for the day. The First Basketball team played encouraging, high quality basketball despite losing to Ivanhoe on Friday afternoon. Camberwell made a strong start; however, the persistence of Ivanhoe led to a ten point win for the home team. Max Harper and Stuart Blackie (both Year 11) were stand out players. Camberwell’s Cycling team took to the road, competing in a field of 56 male riders. Hamish Webber (Year 10) led the way for Camberwell, finishing fourth overall while Peter Thorn (Year 8) came 28th. A strong start for the team as they now set their focus on the Criterion Race on the Saturday 8 November. 10A Cricket had a tense and exhilarating start to the season, defeating Ivanhoe with three balls to spare. After initially struggling to dismiss Ivanhoe’s top order, Camberwell’s bowlers began to find their rhythm, with Ben Niemandt and Thomas Finney (Year 9) making vital breakthroughs. Set with the task of getting a run a ball off their 25 overs, Camberwell’s openers made a strong start, Jack Graves (Year 9) batting with confidence whilst James Frampton (Year 9) made a crucial 30 retired, guiding the team to an impressive victory. The First XI Cricket side sought to build upon their promising start against Peninsula last week. Playing Ivanhoe, Camberwell won the toss and elected to bat on a slow and tricky pitch. A steady flow of wickets left the team reeling at 9/55 before Andrew Young, 50*, and Michael Liu (both Year 10) put on 46 for the final wicket, Camberwell eventually posting 101 off their 50 overs. Michael Liu then backed up his batting effort with an impressive spell of swing bowling, taking 3 for 18 off 8 overs. Lachie Powell (Year 10), 2 for 18 off 5, ably backed him up; however, despite pressure mounting on Ivanhoe, they surpassed Camberwell’s score with 5 wickets in hand. The First Volleyball team travelled to Dandenong where they played Trinity. Camberwell started strongly, winning the first set with, captain, Tao Wang (Year 11) and Chris Kerdemelidis (Year 9) playing well. The match proved to be a close one, Camberwell going blow-for-blow with Trinity. The introduction of Nicholas Pahos (Year 11) in the third set proved effective as Camberwell took a 2 sets to 1 lead; however, Trinity’s strength and experience proved too much for Camberwell, with Camberwell eventually succumbing to the reigning Premiers. Camberwell Kayakers got off to a great start last Saturday in their first race for the Summer Season, racing on the Loddon River just outside Bendigo. The new paddlers raced very well for their first race. The experienced paddlers led from the front with Gus Coleman and Karl Salins (both Year 9), Hanze Hu (Year 10) and Jacob Hunting (Year 8) all winning their races. Captain Andrew Holloway (Year 11) raced particularly well to win his U18 marathon. Students are required to choose an issue which has appeared in the Australian Media since 1 September 2014 and structure a 5 to 6 minute talk where they present a point of view in relation to that issue. On Tuesday 7 October, our students attended a presentation by Ms Judith Field on Direct Speech, which aimed to provide them with a number of practical strategies and approaches to effectively structure and deliver the speech. Current Year 11 English teachers will be working with their classes on this task this Term, and students will be expected to have their speech fully drafted by the end of this school year. They will be using the Christmas and January holiday break to refine the piece and your assistance in reminding your son to return to school next year with his speech fully prepared and rehearsed is greatly appreciated. The boys handled themselves with aplomb and looked outstanding in their evening attire. They were perfect hosts to the girls from Fintona, PLC and Camberwell Girls’. Mr Tierney did a wonderful job organising the night along with the members of the Social Committee, which included Ben Chesler, Richard Han, Roger Jin, Alex Kyriakos, Lachlan Li, Harrison McEwen, Matthew Seddon and Ishan Vivekanantham. Well done to all Year 8 boys for a superb night. Queensland Open Water Championships Run/Walk for Koala Kids Run/Walk for Koala Kids United Nations Public Speaking Competition State Athletics Championships House Swimming Carnival Long Weekend Junior School Regional Athletics 2014 Sport Music Careers Calendar Support Groups Spectemur Term 3 On Wednesday we took to the local tracks for our Run/Walk for Koala Kids. For one solid hour the boys completed laps of a set circuit, with some impressive distances covered by those who elected to run. Several boys ran in excess of ten kilometres during the event, including Lachlan Doehmann and Khalid Abbas (Year 6), Thomas Grave, Charlie Harper, Harley Beechey, Ryan Box and Ryan de Kretser (Year 7) and Noah Marshallsay, Christian Chene, Jack Fitzgerald and Nicholas Ioannou (Year 8). The sausage in bread and lollipop for lunch completed an excellent event. We now ask that the boys collect the money pledged from their sponsors and return it to their Form Teacher by the end of next week. My thanks to Mr Burke for organising the logistics of the day, and to Ms Liz Ferentinos (mother of Arnie Ferentinos, Year 9, and an ambassador for Koala Kids) for sourcing our food supplies. Thanks also to Mrs Elliott and our enthusiastic team of parent helpers, who volunteered their time to prepare the barbecue lunch. United Nations Public Speaking Competition Lachlan Doig, James Gunasegaram (Year 7) and Michael Tan (Year 8) have been selected to compete in the final of the United Nations Youth Association Voice (Public Speaking) competition. We wish the boys well for the final. National Touch Rugby Competition Well done to Oscar Treacy (Year 6), who represented Victoria at the National Touch Rugby Championships in Morwell last week. The round robin format saw Oscar involved in games against teams from each other state and territory in the Under 12 division. Queensland Open Water Championships Our resident superfish Connor Xu (Year 8) ventured to Queensland over the weekend to contest the Queensland Open Water Championships, which is a challenging five kilometre event. Connor placed fourth in the Under 14 age group. State Athletics Championships Congratulations Lachlan Doehmann (Year 6), who claimed fourth place in the 800 metre event at the State School Championships at Albert Park last Monday. This is an outstanding result that now qualifies Lachlan to compete in the National Championships in Tasmania in late November. House Swimming Carnival The House Swimming Carnival will take place next Friday, from 11.15am to 2.00pm at MSAC. Parents and spectators are most welcome at the event. The competition for the overall House Cup is fierce, and any of several Houses can still win, depending on the outcome next Friday. It certainly promises to be a great day of competition. Page 4 Contents Headmaster Year 12 Examinations Grandparents’ Day Australian Maths Competition Long Weekend I wish everyone a relaxing long weekend. The current Year 6 students tasted CGS Sport for the first time, while at the other end the Firsts Teams competed for a chance at AGSV Premiership glory in 2014/15. Firsts Badminton and Table Tennis had wins while Firsts Volleyball nearly pulled off the upset of the season going down in five sets to last year’s premiers. Squash continues to enjoy their new competition being a part of Squash Victoria’s Saturday morning Junior Pennant Competition. The three AGSV schools (Camberwell, Marcellin and Trinity) compete against Squash Victoria clubs such as Mountain District, Lilydale and Westerfolds. It’s a great initiative and the students are enjoying the competition and new format, especially the doubles. Badminton has changed its home venue with a move to Pro Badminton Academy in Blackburn. There are nine purpose built courts which Camberwell is lucky to train on during the week and that the AGSV use for competition on the weekend. The Old Boys Cricket Team are playing the First XI in the last ever game on the KAO on Saturday 22 November from 10.00am onwards. If you are interested in attending or even rolling the arm over, email the Director of Sport for more information. Spectators are also more than welcome to pop in and support the teams throughout the day. Training resumes as of Wednesday 5 November for all teams both before and after school. The last day of Summer Sports training for Term 4 is Friday 21 November. Jamie Watson, Director of Sport Music October has been a busy month musically. Two very successful Soirees; one for Brass and one for Piano, gave these instrumentalists the opportunity for performance practise before their music exams, and to complete the study of one or two pieces they have been working on. The boys of the Middle School Orchestra and Band and String Orchestra (about 200 boys in all) gave a wonderful and entertaining concert to nearly 400 Grandparents this week. The boys not only enjoyed performing, but it gave them another chance to play some of the music they have rehearsed so diligently during the year. The level of performance that these boys have attained during the year is quite outstanding. Also this week was the Twilight Chamber Concert with music selected and co-ordinated by Mr Bob Wakely, combining chamber works and concerto movements. Soloists were Edward Tan, Oliver Wong, Nelson Zhao, Adrian Xu (all Year 9), Harry Speagle (Year 10), Michael Xu, Boris Chan, Justin Tu, Jerry Li (all Year 11) and Joseph Kim (Year 12). The staff and student orchestra accompanied the boys with great care and sensitivity. The Brahms Clarinet Quintet comprising of Nathan Fong (Year 10), Edward Tan (Year 9), Nicholas Wong (Year 10), Nelson Zhao (Year 9) and Jonathan Duan (Year 10) was a highlight. A work of such sophistication, complexity and requiring such profound musicianship was performed by these boys with great finesse and dexterity at a level beyond their years and ages. The CGS Chorale added an extra dimension with their sublime vocal sounds. Special thanks to those in Year 12 who came back to be part of this concert and my thanks to all the boys involved, and who I am sure have benefitted greatly from this experience, and to the staff for their guidance and support to the boys. A most appreciative and delighted audience filled the Music Rehearsal Room. The Year 7 Class Band Concert, which is every boy in Year 7 who learns a musical instrument, will give a lunchtime concert on Thursday 13 November at 12.55pm in the Music School. The final event for the year for Middle and Senior School is the Service of Nine Lessons and Carols on Wednesday 10 December at 8.00pm at St Mark’s Church. The 90 members of the choir have begun rehearsing the music required for this occasion. Do not miss it! How does it work? It’s easy. Simply visit the online store and place an order at http://www.shop.kangaroobiemeats.com/. Deadline for ordering is Tuesday 25 November at 6.00pm. We will then bring your order to Camberwell Grammar, outside the Cafeteria on Thursday 27 November at 3.00pm. You or your son can pick up the order directly from us, the farmers who raised your meat. Who benefits? Your school – 5% of sales will go directly to the Friends of Performing Arts. You and your family – Buying direct from the farmer means you can trust that your food has been produced ethically and responsibly. Also grass fed products are rich in all the fats now proven to be health-enhancing, including omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. CGS Book Exchange 2014 Call for Volunteers!
