From the Pastor… Masses of the Week
T D November 9th, 2014 Masses of the Week From the Pastor… Dear Parishioner, Jim Brady was President Reagan’s witty and well liked press secretary. A single gunshot to his head turned him into the best-known living example of the awful damage guns can do --- and what shooting victims are capable of despite such terrible impairment. Brady was the most badly wounded of four men shot in John Hinckley’s deranged attempt to kill Reagan. Brady survived, but for the rest of his life his left side was paralyzed, his speech slurred and his brain function compromised. The essential part of what made the affable Brady, known as “The Bear” never went away. Brady who died last August aged 73 heroically endured multiple surgeries and many setbacks. Through it all, his sense of humor endured. The shooting gave him purpose and an anger that drove him to do something about laws that let almost anyone buy guns. It took 12 years for the “Brady Law” (a real background check of a gun purchaser) to be signed by President Clinton in 1993. Our Baptism in a sense is like getting ‘shot’ by God. He sends us into the world armed by the weapon of Grace, to fight the Evil One, who never likes to receive attention. Satan thrives on being anonymous, as if He does not exist. He does. He is our real enemy, out to destroy us, not only to wound us but eventually to kill us. He does not want us to love God or our neighbor. Just love yourself only, no one else. We need James Brady’s persistence to continue to battle the Cunning One, not to give up. Even when He wounds us, his victory is short lived; our balm, our healing ointment is Christ’s loving mercy in the sacrament of Confession. As Pope Francis says: “God never tires of giving us His Mercy, we tire of asking for it.” Seek His forgiveness REGULARLY. When we stop going to confession, alas Satan has won a big victory. Remember, God Loves you unconditionally… I try, Fr. We learned of the organization and the event while praying at the 40 Days for Life vigil in Morristown. What a powerful night of prayer! Guest speakers Abby Johnson, former “employee of the year” at Planned Parenthood turned outspoken advocate for the unborn and author, and Shawn Carney, Co-Founder of 40 Days for Life headlined the event, but each speaker in the lineup shook the room with their testimonies and prayers. Their mission: To protect the unborn by empowering women. First Choice’s three pillars of focus are Prevention, Intervention and Restoration. Since its inception in 1985, First Choice Women's Resource Centers (formerly Friendship Pregnancy Centers) has counseled more than 30,000 women in unplanned pregnancies and reached over 70,000 high school students through Straight Talk, First Choice’s interactive abstinence presentation. Clients are served through five strategic locations in Morristown, Montclair, Jersey City, Newark and Plainfield, and receive accurate information, select medical services, and support to help them make healthy decisions. Services are provided free of charge, and First Choice relies on the efforts, financial support and dedicated prayer of volunteers. They are members of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability, Care Net, and IMPACT Association. First Choice estimates the total cost to save one baby is approximately $1,200. The 350 or so attendees took this to heart, and by the end of the banquet, more than $400,000 had been raised. What great news! Even better, First Choice reports that in 2014, they were able to save 13% more babies than the year before, and through successful fundraising and their newest center in Plainfield, they are poised to do even more in 2015. For more information about this outstanding organization, please visit www.1stchoice.org, or pick up a brochure by the church entrance. May God richly bless you! Heather Save the Date! As parishioners who will one day benefit from their priestly ministry, we have an opportunity to support their vocation by making a pledge to the Bishops Annual Appeal, which funds the expenses related to their formation. Please make a gift to the 2014 Bishop’s Annual Ap- DID YOU KNOW…. St. John Lateran is one of the four major basilicas in Rome, with St. Peter, St. Mary Major, and St. Paul Outside the Walls. It is unique among the four since it is the cathedral church of the Bishop of Rome, the pope. “Lateran” was the name of a Roman family whose lands were seized for the Church by the Emperor Constantine, and which then became the site of a great basilica dedicated in honor of John the Baptist. The Basilica now has a triple dedication in honor of St. John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, and our Lord. Across the front of the Basilica is Latin inscription that says, “This is the mother and head of all churches in the whole world.” It is a reminder of why the dedication of this one church is celebrated by the universal church: we are one family, once flock, and we are led by one shepherd, the successor of St. Peter.
