The Irwin snow cat skiing area located just outside of
Irwin, Colorado will be the venue for the Irwin Guides Ski
Mountaineering Race, presented by Griggs Orthopedics and
Millet on December 6th, 2014. Located just miles from Crested
Butte above the old mining townsite of Irwin in the Ruby Range
of the Elk Mountains, the opening event of the USSMA Series will
showcase the fastest backcountry ski racers in North America.
This isolated venue can only be accessed by snowcat or
snowmobile in the winter months, creating a truly unique
backcountry experience for a racers and spectators alike.
Mothering Support Group - Meets Monthly in Gunnison and
Crested Butte - sponsored by Gunnison Valley Health
A Mothering Support Group sponsored by Gunnison
Valley Health is available in both Gunnison and Crested Butte.
The group meets twice a month for an hour to provide support
and guidance to pregnant women and new mothers regarding
feeding and parenting choices. A certified lactation consultant is
available to help with breast-feeding questions. The group meets
the first Monday of every month in Gunnison at 5:00 p.m. at the
Education House, 300 E. Denver, and the last Thursday of every
month at 10am at the Oh Be Joyful Church, 625 Maroon Ave. The

The Gunnison/Crested Butte communities donated a significant number of items during the
GBW October Coat and Boot drive! These gently used items are available at no cost to people in the
Gunnison valley who need them. We have a variety of heavy and light weight coats, jackets, fleece, vests,
shoes, and boots for men, women and children in our community. The donated items are in excellent
condition.

DORA ISSUES 600 NOTIFICATIONS ON POTENTIAL
DOCTOR-SHOPPING
Over 600 prescribers and pharmacies in the State are receiving a notification today from the
Colorado Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) that a patient they treat obtained potentially
dangerous amounts of controlled substances from multiple prescribers and pharmacies.
In one instance, a patient obtained prescriptions from 11 different prescribers and 10 different
pharmacies within 30 days, amounting to potentially harmful quantities of potent prescription drugs.
Another person obtained over 1,600 pills of oxycodone and hydrocodone from multiple prescribers and
dispensers in one month.
These “push-notices” sent Wednesday are the first following enabling legislation passed this year
that allows the database to send information to healthcare prescribers and dispensers (HB14-1283).
Practitioners receiving a push-notice are asked to use their clinical judgment to determine the appropriate
response.
“More people in Colorado now die from opioid overdoses than from drunk-driving related
crashes. At a time when our state is experiencing nearly four times the number of opioid overdose deaths
as we did 12 years ago, it is essential for prescribers and dispensers to have access to the information they
need to make an informed decision” said Lauren Larson, Director of the Division of Professions and
Occupations, part of the Department of Regulatory Agencies, which administers the PDMP.
The PDMP is a statewide database of controlled substances dispensed to Colorado patients.
The push-notices are just one part of a statewide effort to reduce prescription drug abuse while
protecting access for legitimate health needs. The Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse
Prevention (Consortium), created in 2013 by Governor Hickenlooper, is spearheading the statewide
response to what has been called the prescription drug abuse epidemic.
The information is made available to prescribers and pharmacists to make more informed
prescribing decisions. The database was created in 2005 to help curb doctor-shopping, a tactic used to
secure prescription drugs from multiple sources for misuse, abuse or diversion, but this is the first year
push-notices are authorized.
“The PDMP push-notices help to alert healthcare practitioners when there may be a problem,
and to coordinate care when a practitioner may not otherwise know someone else is prescribing to the
same patient. Other states that have implemented push-notices have witnessed up to a 74% drop in
doctor-shopping. Now, thanks to the General Assembly, the stakeholders and the Consortium who
supported the legislation, Colorado has the ability to send this valuable information to the practitioners
that need it,” said Larson.

BOOK FAIR
Gunnison Community School will host a Book Fair on November 10-14 from 8:30-6:30 Monday
– Thursday and 8:30-4:30 on Friday. Funds raised will help purchase books for classrooms and our school
library. The community is invited to attend this fun reading event that helps inspire children to become
lifelong readers.
Again this year, children who purchase a book for their teacher’s classroom library may enter a
raffle to win a basket full of books and goodies.
In addition, the Book Fair will feature the All for Books™ program, where kids can share the
thrill of reading by donating loose change to purchase books from the Book Fair for Rockin’ Rita’s Book
Bus. Scholastic matches monetary donations with a donation of up to one million books, which go to
national non-profit organizations dedicated to helping families in need, such as the Kids in Distressed
Situations and Kids In Need Foundation.

TO THIS AMAZING COMMUNITY,
People have been stopping me a lot since the ad for a new Director of the Museum was put in the
paper 2 weeks ago. To help make things clearer, I wanted to share the direction the Museum is taking. The
Board of Directors accepted a proposal I gave to them at the September meeting. I am not leaving the
Museum, I am just transitioning. We have created a new job called Outreach Coordinator and I am going
to fill that position. I will be a liaison to the public. I will still give the Walking Tours, Field Trips for the
school, help with the reunions for the old time families, etc. I will be one-quarter time, so my hours will
be greatly reduced.
Most importantly, I am thrilled the Board is allowing me to continue to be a part of the Museum.
It has been the best job I could ever have had. I am so lucky to have worked with such a great staff and
wonderful Board members for the past 10 years! I feel it is time for new energy to help run the Museum
–someone with social media skills. You know me, I’m a talker not a texter!! Also, I am still very healthy
and want to hike more in the summers!!
A huge thank you goes out to all of you in this wonderful community that have been a part of the
Museum either by being a member, volunteering, shopping here, or attending events. The Museum could
not have been such an amazing success without all of you taking part. My heartfelt gratitude is coming
your way!!

Crazy About Street Arts Camp!
This Friday, November 7th we’re taking it to the streets – inside – for an exciting day of art camp!
Camp will be held from 12:30 – 4:30 p.m., and a snack and beverage are included in the $32 registration
fee. Two age groups to choose from: Group A: Ages 5 – 8 and Group B: Ages 9 – 12. Instructors Gail Sovick
and Christy Besecker will lead students through street-art themed games, snacks and activities. Kids will

November Book Talk

Gunnison Valley Youth Fiddlers
The second session of Gunnison Valley Youth Fiddlers (GVYF) is about to begin! Dates are
Tuesdays and Thursdays, Nov. 11th - Dec. 16th, 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Registration is $80. The GVYF is a group
strings program open to students grade 3-12 focusing on violin, viola, cello and upright bass. This program
will follow along with the Suzuki method. The goal of this program is to create a community youth
symphony and fiddlers group in an encouraging and fun environment. Students must supply their own

Paint By Appointment
We continue to offer our space for Painting Appointments. This works well if you cannot paint
on our scheduled dates, if you would like to host a painting party, or if you want to ensure the space is
available for your group only. Pieces from a Painting Appointment will be fired with our next scheduled
kiln firing. A Painting Appointment costs $50 per group for a two hour session, plus the cost of what you
choose to paint. If you’d like to have your pieces fired and ready before that time, you may choose to fire
the kiln directly after your session for an additional $55 fee. Please note that it takes two full days for the
kiln to be fired, cooled, and unloaded.

INVESTORS TO PREPARE FOR EBOLA-RELATED SCAM
Rise in Ebola-related investment website names raises suspicion.
Following the outbreak of Ebola in western Africa and its appearance in North America, the
Colorado Division of Securities, a Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) division, today cautioned
investors to be aware of opportunistic Internet-based investment schemes related to the disease.
“Past experience tells us that periods of uncertainty or fear are prime time for con artists looking
to make a quick score,” said Securities Commissioner Gerald Rome. “Investors should approach with
caution any unsolicited Ebola-related investment opportunities, especially those received through the
Internet.”
Commissioner Rome said an analysis of Internet domain names by the North American
Securities Administrators Association (NASAA), of which the Division is a member, found nearly 1,200
domains with “Ebola” in their name have been registered with top-level domains, such as .com, .net, .org
since April 2014. About 1,000 of those registrations have occurred since July, as awareness of the crisis
spread. Of these sites, 184 were identified as suspicious.
A review of Ebola-related domain names found several with the words “fund,” “invest,” “stock,”
or “futures” in their titles. For example, the following domain names have been registered:
hotebolastocks.com;
bestebolastocks.com;
ebolafutures.com;
ebolainvesting.com;
ebolaoutbreakstocks.com; ebolastocks.com; and fundsforebola.com. Most of the domain names are
“parked” and have no content, indicating that either someone has purchased the domain hoping to re-sell
it, or that the content is not yet posted.
“While these sites have not been investigated, the review of domain names indicates that there
certainly appear to be those intent on raising Ebola-related funds or otherwise trying to leverage the crisis
for financial gain,” Rome said.
Rome reminds investors to use common sense. “Pie in the sky promises of quick wealth generally
are red flags signaling fraud ahead,” he said, and urges individuals to contact the Division to determine if
both the promoter of the investment and the investment itself are licensed and registered. If not, they may
be operating illegally. The Division can be reached at 303-894-2320.
BALLROOM DANCE FOR AUTUMN
Dance: The Free Community Ballroom Dance for Autumn is Saturday, November 15 from 6:00
- 9:00 p.m. at the Elk’s Lodge, 123 S. Main St. Gunnison. The Community Dance is Free, however
donations are always welcome to help offset the cost of renting the Elk's Lodge. You are welcome to bring
a finger food type snack to share. The Lodge bar is not available. Starting at 5:30 Bob and Rita will offer

BLUE MESA RESERVOIR BOAT INSPECTION –
NOVEMBER 1 TO ICE UP
Beginning November 1st, boat inspections for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) at Curecanti
National Recreation Area will be provided to boaters on a call-in basis.
Inspections can be requested by calling the Blue Mesa AIS Inspection phone at (970) 209-2335
between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., 7 days a week. Boaters should expect a 20 minute response
time to boat ramps, so call ahead to meet the inspector at the ramp. Boaters are reminded that inspections
are required for launch and retrieval and ramps are locked, so calling for an inspection is necessary.
Call-in inspections will be available at Elk Creek and Lake Fork boat ramps until ice precludes
launching at each site. Those two boat ramps will not be plowed, though the adjacent parking areas will
be cleared of snow as quickly as possible. Ramps can become extremely icy in freezing conditions. Please
ensure that you have the proper equipment to retrieve your vessel considering these factors.
Due to freezing temperatures, decontamination will not be available; boats requiring
decontamination may be denied launch.
AIS Coordinator Gene Seagle adds, “Blue Mesa Reservoir remains the beautiful place we enjoy
so much thanks to the diligent efforts and cooperation of our boaters and anglers. Thank you for helping
us to keep Aquatic Invasive Species out of Blue Mesa Reservoir and thanks for a great boating season.”
GUNNISON NORDIC KICKS OFF
A great group of skiing enthusiasts joined together at Gunnison Nordic season Kick Off last
week. Roanne Rouse Houck N.D., Carol Quinn, and Bryan Wickenhauser presented excellent preparation
tips to the skiers. Garlic Mike’s provided amazing pasta for the crowd and Kirsten Dickey/Off Center
Design & Signs provided logged stickers for all members. Gunnison Nordic and Crested Butte Nordic
provided updates for the ski season. Everyone in the room seemed excited for snow to come and ready
for a strong, and fun season.

Winter is here, and the Crested Butte Parks & Recreation Department requests your assistance
maintaining safe sidewalks this snow season. Please remove all items from sidewalks so our crews may
gain access to perform snow removal during storm cycles. Per the Town Code, property owners/occupants
shall clear away snow and ice from the sidewalk adjacent their premises. Together we will keep the
sidewalks clear and safe for residents and visitors this winter.

The Guild, home of First Ascent Coffee Roasters and Mountain Oven Organic Bakery, will reopen
on Friday the 7th at 7:00 a.m. First Ascent will have its full drink menu available, and Mountain Oven
will be offering a limited selection of baked goods (no bread) until later in November.
BOOMERS MONTROSE THEATRE TRIP 11/9
Boomers is planning a Theatre trip to Montrose to the Magic Circle Players production of the
musical comedy “70, Girls, 70”. This is about a group of venerable ladies and gents living at a run-down
and dispirited senior citizens’ hotel in New York City, slated to be sold to developers. While there is no
lack of humor, courage or willingness to save their home, there is a lack of money. With determination
and a few tricks up their sleeves, they pull off a sensational caper. If you liked Calendar Girl, you’ll love
this!
10:30 a.m. – Meet in the Community Center Parking lot (No bathrooms facilities; not open till Noon)
Noon – Brunch or Lunch at Stone House Restaurant
2:00 p.m. – Matinee Performance
4:30 p.m. – Leave for Gunnison
6:00 p.m. – Estimated Time of Return
Boomers & Beyond President, Pat Jagger, has reserved a block of tickets for our Senior Activity
Club on her credit card. If you sign-up and can’t make it, you are responsible to find someone to take your
place or pay for your ticket.
If we have enough folks we will take the Rec Center van. However, if more than 12 sign-up, or
just a few, we will need to carpool instead. Cost: $15.00 Sr. rate tickets for musicals; $5.00 for gas;
estimate $15.00 lunch.

if you could drive (if we need to carpool). Also indicate if you want a reservation for lunch. You can leave
your $15.00 check (made out to Pat Jagger) at the front desk by noon Friday, Nov. 7th (or plan to pay Pat
Sunday morning).

BOOK TALK AT THE GAC
Join the GAC’s Book Talk the first Thursday of every month from 7-8:00 p.m. to discuss the previous
month’s book. On November 6, the group will be discussing “Vintage Munro” by Alice Munro: the perfect
introduction to the Nobel Laureate's revelatory short stories, in which she unfolds the wordless secrets that
