LOOKING TO THE LAST DAY
Today the Church remembers all who have walked
the way of Christ and passed from this life. The readings
all look to the last day, when we shall all rise from the
dead and be reunited.
The prophet Daniel announces words of warning and
welfare. He cautions us against the judgment to come, but
he also comforts us and assures us that all who live a life
of virtue and justice will find life eternal.
The reading from Romans reminds us that, because
of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection and our entrance into that paschal mystery through baptism, we now
share in the new life won by Christ. This recognition has
repercussions: we need to live righteously now, that we
might rise to life forever with Christ on the last day.
In the Gospel Jesus pledges that all the Father has
given him will not be lost. All the faithful will be raised to
joy and live forever in the presence of God.

Requiem
Maybe it’s because we’ve had 49 funerals between our two parishes this year … Or, maybe it’s because I turned 50 this year
… But I find myself reading the local obituaries far more often
than I’ve done before! It is often fascinating to see how folks are
memorialized in the newspaper. It makes one stop and think,
“What will they write about me someday?” I remember a high
school exercise in creative writing was to produce our own epitaphs. That might be something each of us might reflect upon on
this All Souls Day.
What will you and I be remembered for after we’re gone? And
by that question, I mean not only as individuals, but as a community – as a church? At a time when so many live out their
days as if God did not exist, are we not in a certain sense a
faithful remnant of humanity striving for holiness? I sometimes
wonder if in the far distant future our times will be looked upon
as another Dark Age. And that, just as the monks and nuns of
ages past preserved the Truth, so we will one day be remembered for holding fast to the Faith of our ancestors.
Such thoughts come to me especially at funerals of faithful
Catholics whose children and grandchildren no longer practice
the Faith … or no longer believe at all. One of my brother
priests commented to me the other day, “It’s going to be a very
different church ten years from now.” By that he meant that
many of the Catholic institutions we now take for granted will be
gone. I would tend to agree, especially as I witness the passing
of so many of the “pillars” of our parish communities. I’d go so
far as to say that we no longer facing a priest shortage … we
are facing a people shortage!
Perhaps these are melancholy, pessimistic thoughts. But then,
All Souls is a somber day; a day to consider our mortality. The
world, as we’ve known it, is quickly passing away. As the
Psalms remind us:
As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
When the wind has passed over it, it is no
more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.…
(Psalm 103: 15-16.)
But all is not doom and gloom. Despite the challenges and
changes that confront us, we have hope that all is in God’s
hands. While you and I may pass away, there is never a
“requiem” for the Church. There are signs of the “new springtime” that recent popes have heralded. In various places a deep
renewal is underway. I remember being in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York as Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI prayed – and
invited us to pray – for a “new Pentecost” in the Church; a new
outpouring of the Spirit to stir into flame the embers that lie beneath the “dust and ashes” of a post-Christian society. Come,
Holy Spirit!

Noodle making Monday, November 3rd. We need a minimum of 12 people each time to ensure we meet our goal of
300 pounds of noodles. We will begin at 8:00 a.m. and are
usually done by noon. Bring your rolling pins. Interested in
learning how to make noodles? Come join us.
November 11, 2014 Mass 11:30 a.m. and lunch to follow
with Fr. Ed and Srs. @ St. Peters. Come join us and bring

December 12, 2014 Trip to the Shrine of Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Blessing of the new statue for the unborn and
Mass with Cardinal Burke. More information available

Ladies Expo and craft sale at the Pines Ballroom, Bloomer
on Friday, November 14, 2014 4:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Lunch
is available. More than 30 vendors will be present. We also
have baked goods, crafts and dumplings for sale.
Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Eau Claire will have a holiday Bazaar on November 2, 2014 with doors opening at 8:00
a.m. through 6:00 p.m. We also will be serving our ham dinner from 11:00 a.m. ~ 1:00 p.m. Adults $9.00, children under
12 years of age $5.00 and preschoolers free. We also have a
family rate of $30.00. Carry outs are available.
The KC will host the Hunter Stag on
Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the KC Hall.
Menu: delicious Hunter’s stew, cole slaw, Deacon Rider’s
homemade bread, and free refreshments from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. There are raffles for prizes throughout the event which
includes a Savage 270 rifle, a Moosberg 500 12 ga shotgun, a
Marlin 22 auto rim fire, Ameristep tree stand, a Plano gun case
and a Bushnell 3x9 banner scope.
Tickets are $10.00 at the door or from a KC member, which will
include the dinner and refreshments and you will be a part of
the main prize drawings. (Need not be present to win the raffle
prizes.) Everyone is welcome .
Youth need to be accompanied by an adult.
St. Bernard’s in Thorp will host their annual pancake, sausage
breakfast on Sunday, November 2, 2014. Serving from 8:00
a.m. until noon. Menu: regular pancakes, potato pancakes, real
maple syrup, cheese, applesauce, coffee or milk. Cost is $6.00
adults, children $4.00 and preschoolers free. All proceeds go to
the Thorp Catholic school.
Memorial Mass at the KC hall on Wednesday, November 12,
2014 at 5:00 p.m. Father Ed Shuttleworth, Chaplain will be the
celebrant. We remember those members who have died this
past year as well as all members of the Council that have died.
We will have a pot luck supper after the Mass. All are welcome.

Peter’s Patter
Hello from the First & Second Graders; we continue to work
hard in all of our subjects. In religion we are learning about the
Fall of Man as well as the fall of the Angels. Why did Adam and
Eve disobey God when they had it all in the Garden of Eden,
why did some of the angels think they were better than God?
We are also studying our saint for All Saints Day so we will be
ready in case we are asked to give a report to the Grandparents. In Math we are finding out “that creating groups of ten”
help us with addition and subtraction. In Reading and Language
we are working with adverbs and adjectives, writing opinion
paragraphs while making sure we end our opinion with a closing
sentence that helps others to agree with our opinion. We continue to study the life cycle of a plant and the grass seeds we
planted with Mrs. Wild did sprout!
We hope that those who attended the fall dance had a great
time. Thanks to all of those parents that helped out and especially to Deacon Rider for making his pizza!

Love Lights program underway
CHIPPEWA FALLS – The Partners of HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital invite you to purchase Love Lights this holiday season to
recognize special people in your life, living or deceased, or to
honor a person in the military. Lights may be purchased for a
minimum donation of $5 per light and will shine brightly on
trees in the hospital’s Healing Garden in front of the hospital
throughout the holiday season. White lights are purchased to
remember someone deceased and red or green lights may be
purchased to honor someone who is living. Blue lights will
honor a member of the military. Lights may be purchased up to
Christmas but must be purchased by December 1 to have
names included in a special insert in the Chippewa Herald to
be published early in December. The Love Lights tree lighting
ceremony will take place at 4:30 p.m. on December 11. There
will be a short prayer service and celebration in the hospital’s
chapel at 4 p.m. that day. The public is cordially invited to attend both events. Love Lights purchase forms are available in
the Gift Shop at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital or online at
