Crandon Middle School Drama presents "The Beauty Queen of Cabbage Corners This flock of bluebills that landed on Rollingstone Lake about a week ago are telling us something. Yes, winter is coming, and they are going to spend it in southern climes. In the meantime, duck hunters will be awaiting the northern flocks. While the Crandon High School Drama Team has been preparing for sectionals, Middle School Drama has been practicing a play called “The Beauty Queen of Cabbage Corners” by Bill Van Horn. Cabbage Corners is a small town where Senator JP Martin grew up. Now he’s back and he’s brought Barbara Rivers with him to film a documentary introducing America to small towns across the United States. Only one problem, Barbara feels she needs to spice things up a bit to get more viewers. Throw in the great-greatgranddaughter of Calamity Jane and you’re in for a fun treat. Enjoy this presentation Friday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. Cost is $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for students and seniors, kids five and under are free. Benefit planned for Linda L. Lukas Linda Lukas is battling cancer, and some friends are trying to help by holding a benefit on Saturday, November 15th at the Laona Fire Station. The benefit begins at 3:00 p.m. There will be a $5 cover charge, and a $3.50 BBQ plate will be served. Music will be donated by "Shake It Up" DJ service. There will be free refreshments along with wheel raffles, bucket raffles, 50/50 raffles and a gun raffle. If you would like to donate to the cause, please do, as any donation is welcome and readily accepted. Call Leslie at 715-889-1452 or Tammy at 715-784-1449. Mole Lake election results The following people were re-elected by the Sokaogon Chippewa citizenry in Mole Lake: Chairman: Chris McGeshick (incumbent) Vice-Chairman: Arlyn Ackley, Jr. (incumbent) Secretary: Myra Van Zile (incumbent) Treasurer: Victoria Ackley (incumbent) Council 1: Clinton Fox (incumbent) Council 2: James Polar (incumbent) Council Members will be sworn in on January 19, 2015. Forest County election results The unofficial election results are posted on the Forest County website. As you probably know, incumbent Republican Scott Walker defeated Democratic challenger Mary Burke for the governor's job. Forest County agreed with the rest of the state, supporting Walker by a vote of 2,041 to Burke's 1,499. The only two precincts that voted for Burke was the Town of Crandon, with a vote in Burkes favor of 124 to 116, and Nashville Ward 2, with overwhelming support of Burke by a vote of 118 to 10. The county also supported Brad Schimel for Attorney General by a vote of 1,883 to Susan Happ's 1,412. The exception was Nashville Ward 2, who voted 100 to 20 for Susan Happ. Schimel also carried the state handily. Douglas La Follette was a Democrat who won in Forest County. For some unknown reason, he carried several precincts to earn a win, with 1,680 votes to Julian Bradley's 1,497. La Follette also won statewide. PIONEER EXPRESS PAGE 05, NOVEMBER 10, 2014 DEATH NOTICES After over two weeks of being kept alive only by mechanical means, being under heavy sedation to relieve continuous pain and realizing that he would never again be able to move much more than a few toes, one pinky finger or his eyelids, Dan Seekins asked his medical staff and family to honor his living will, which ironically he had written and signed the day before his accident. He had discussed this considerably with his family and medical staff during his hospital stay. With family around him, they honored his desires on Monday afternoon with each family member sharing in a small shot of brandy (Dan's favorite drink), talking to Dan and enjoying the moment with Dan. Laughter and love was present. Dan found enjoyment in and then solitude during the little over an hour before he passed away around 6:53 p.m. Monday evening. Funeral arrangements are as follows: A wake for Dan will be held at the Taylor Funeral Home in Staples, Minnesota on Monday, November 17 from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. A funeral will be held for Dan the following day, Tuesday, November 18, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Motley, Minnesota at 11 a.m. An additional prayer service will be held for Dan on Thursday, November 20 at the East Lincoln Alliance Church in Amery. Whether you are in the city or country, you could be walking on thin ice when it comes to safety unless you follow this advice: • Wear footwear with nonslip rubber or neoprene grooved soles. • Learn how to walk on ice if there's no way around it. Lean slightly forward and bend your knees; take short, shuffling steps to increase traction and move slowly. If possible, use stationary objects such as a vehicle or a wall for support as you walk, or put hands out to the side for balance. • Drive slowly even if the roads seem clear. There could be black ice - an extra-thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that usually forms in shaded areas. Take extra care on bridges and overpasses. • Give yourself more room to stop if driving in winter conditions. • Brake gently, and accelerate and decelerate slowly to avoid skids. • Don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roads. Brushing the trails On Saturday, October 25, 2014, the Lumberjack Memorial Snowmobile Club (LMT), along with the Snowmowheelers Snowmobile Club had their annual brushing trails day. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny warm autumn day. Groups of volunteers were dispersed throughout the massive 90 mile LMT trail system with chain saws and clippers in hand. After a day of hard work the volunteers met for a phenomenal dinner at Duck's Bar in Crandon. Pictured is the team of volunteers that brushed County Rd. Q to Crandon taking a well deserved break. This trail is just a small part of the County owned trail system which includes East Hill and the beautiful views of Lake Metonga along with the Ruffled Grouse area. President and groomer driver, Dave Velie, Sr. drove his UTV. LMT trail groomer, Steve Bunda piloted a 1966 CJ- 5 Jeep. ATV volunteers were Aaron Velie, Dave Velie, Jr., Todd Muenster and Mike Link. Please support all Forest County business's and consider joining a local snowmobile club. The LMT club and many other clubs are run solely by volunteers, membership dues, fund raisers and state funded money to help keep our trails well maintained/groomed for all to enjoy. Information for the LMT snowmobile club can be found online at:lmtsnowmobiletrails.com. Mr. Lafferty, himself a longtime Connor Lumber and Land Company employee and later Nicolet Hardwoods Corp. donated the Two-Man Power Saw to Camp 5 Museum to add to the early power saw collection. "What makes this saw unique, said Mr. Lafferty is that the original operation manual and the leather harness is still intact." Mr. Lafferty continued, "This is a 25 horsepower motor and so powerful. The man in the harness had to be really strong! I do not know how my dad did it! He was smaller Than I am, and that saw is a lot to manage!" In donating the 1951 two-man power saw to Camp 5 Museum, Sara Connor, Executive Director said, "This saw shows the rapid advancement of technology, not only during WWII, but in the post-war era." During the 2015 46th Season of Camp 5 Museum/Wisconsin Forestry Museum, we will be focusing on The Greatest Generation's contribution to Wisconsin's Forest Products Industry WWII efforts. The story is about the civilian and military efforts to win WW II. "There have been many generous gifts from the Laona and surrounding communities to Camp 5 Museum, the two-man power saw from Mr. Lafferty continues the story that makes up the fabric of the greater community. Eco-Docks Floating Docks and Drive On Docks 20 Year Warranty Maintenance Free, 715-850-0198 www.Eco-Docks.com www.Candock.com From nearly 50 applicants, the Lake Metonga Association was selected to receive a $500 green gift to support the installation of the informational signs to prevent the spread of exotic species. The current signs are showing their age as letters have fallen off and pictures of aquatic invasives have faded. Referencing the signs, Schramm said, "They don't present the image we want to present. You can't even read the sign on the south end." Cellcom representatives Bonnie Cayemberg and Eric Britton presented the $500 check to members of the Lake Metonga Association last Thursday at the boat landing on the north side of Lake Metonga. They stated that Cellcom is constantly taking steps to become more eco-friendly as a company and that by dedicating their recycling money to green initiatives, they are working together with the community towards a greener tomorrow. "It's so important not to spread them (invasives)," said Cayemberg. "We are proud to help you replace these signs." This year a total of $32,000 was given out to 26 green organizations in Cellcom's service area. In it's five-year history, Cellcom has awarded a total of $146,200 in Green Gifts. It's recycling program has generated $194,500 for local charities over the past eleven years. Any broken, old or unwanted phones can be brought to Cellcom agent locations for recycling. The phones will be stripped of any personal information, and every penny earned from the recycling process will be donated to local environmental projects and programs. The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) along with the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy created a fund for the purpose of promoting the teaching of personal financial literacy (PFL) in the classroom to improve financial literacy among youth. Wabeno School District applied for and received a grant to support our students in financial literacy. Through the grant cycle, Wabeno School District is focusing on two primary goals related to Personal Financial Literacy. Increasing overall awareness of personal financial literacy of 7th and 8th grade students is our first goal. To achieve this, we implemented a curriculum aligned to the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy. During the 2014-2015 school year, all 7th and 8th grade students will attend a nine-week Financial Literacy survey class at Wabeno School District. Students will be learning about compounding interest, the purpose of financial services, setting short and long term financial goals, and choosing careers to meet their lifestyles, among others. The second goal involves the simple concept of saving money. This concept is covered extensively in the survey class, but students are also going to have the opportunity to apply what they are learning to their own lives. In order to achieve this, Wabeno School District has partnered with Laona State Bank and the Forest County Potawatomi to create a Wabeno School District Savings Challenge! Each month, the students with the most deposits will receive prizes for showing their commitment to saving! April is Financial Awareness Month, so as a culminating activity, the student with the most deposited money from November through April will receive a grand prize while the class that has the largest amount of deposits throughout the challenge will be rewarded with a pizza party to celebrate their commitment to their own personal financial choices! Wabeno School District along with Laona State Bank and the Forest County Potawatomi are very excited to be able to offer this opportunity to the 7th and 8th grade students. Our partnership is committed to our community and students and by providing this opportunity, our hope is that young people will develop the much needed skills for financial success. On Friday, Oct. 17, all of the creations were lined up and judged to see which pumpkin would take the title Best Pumpkin 2014. While there were some very creative designs, Mrs. Couillard’s homeroom class took the title for their rendition of Ironman. Other pumpkin designs included a minion from the popular movie Despicable Me, Mike Wizowski from the hit movie Monsters, Inc., and a gigantic hamburger. All of the students worked well together and, more importantly, enjoyed the positive atmosphere and friendly competition. While these young scientists were at the School Forest, they learned about various aspects of the natural world. The students spent the day visiting stations with teachers in several curriculum areas. For math, the students solved problems with Mrs. Palubicki to match the letters to form a word. Then, they had to go out into the forest and do a scavenger hunt. For Geology, they went to Quartz Hill with Mr. Twardowski to learn about the formation of the mountains, and how they used to have many crystals that formed and sparkled. It was quite the hike, but the students enjoyed the experience and the view. Next, the group studied English with Mrs. Nelson.
