C ATHOLIC P ORTSMOUTH Catholic Parishes and Schools in Partnership in the City of Portsmouth SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER - THE DEDICATION OF THE LATERAN BASILICA, feast (Year A) A feast of Life The dedication of a church is a solemnity in the place where it is celebrated, as is the anniversary. The dedication or anniversary of the cathedral is a feast day for the whole diocese. Today we celebrate the universal feast of the anniversary of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica – the cathedral church of Rome and thus for the whole Church. Although the original basilica was dedicated to our saviour, Basilica Salvatoris, today the Lateran Basilica is dedicated to St John the Baptist & St John the Evangelist. It’s name pays tribute to the Lateranus family who donated the land upon which it sits, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. It was the first Roman church to be erected after Constantine legalised Christianity in 313 AD. The first reading comes from the prophet Ezekiel. This selection includes the wonderful vision Ezekiel has of the heavenly temple. From beneath the temple he sees water flowing. An angel appears and tells Ezekiel that wherever the water flows there will be life. The second reading from St Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians asserts that the Church at Corinth is God’s building. All are fashioned by God. Saint Paul asserts that we are all temples of the living God, made so by the indwelling of the Spirit. In the gospel from John, Jesus casts the moneychangers from the temple. When challenged by the authorities, Jesus responds that if they were to destroy the temple he would raise it up in three days. We know that Jesus was referring to his own body after the Resurrection. In doing so, he presents the same image that St Paul used: His glorified body would be the living temple of those who believe. All three readings point us to baptism – that sacrament by which we first become temples of the Holy Spirit and received our identity as members of the Body of Christ. This feast of the dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome, then, is truly a feast of life. It is a celebration of our own life and the life we receive from God through the Church. As we commemorate the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, we celebrate the church building as a symbol of our deepest identity: we are the living temple of God. If we ourselves are temples of the Holy Spirit, then our very lives must symbolise the permanence of God’s abiding presence in his church and our faith must be strong as to withstand any assault. This doesn’t mean that we build huge walls around ourselves for protection. It means just the opposite: we open ourselves to others, becoming vulnerable, in order to be the presence of God to them. We do so in actions that are modelled after the goodness of Jesus as recorded in the gospels. This is our identity as church, as the Body of Christ.
