Derrinturn Tidy Towns: Due to a lack funding from all sources, Derrinturn Tidy towns are in need of a source of income to be able to maintain the help and assistance of the Tidy Town Scheme. Did you know that the average cost of maintaining our area is over €1,800 per year? This covers insurance, PRSI Levies, maintenance and repair of equipment, fuel for equipment, safety equipment, trees and shrubs, paint etc. In an effort to raise much needed funds they aim to have people sponsor a light on our Community Christmas Tree, in remembrance of a loved one or friend who has passed away. The money raised will go into our Tidy Towns Fund, which is almost depleted. Please support this activity, to keep our village looking its best. If you feel you would like to contribute to this worthy cause, and also remember a loved one, you can donate at Edenderry Credit Union, Main office, Edenderry or at the Carbury Branch, just ask at the desk. Indulgences: The word indulgence originally meant kindness or favour; in Latin it came to mean the remission of a tax or debt. In Roman law and in the Old Testament (Isaiah 61:1) it was used to express release from captivity or punishment. In theological language also the word is sometimes employed in its primary sense to signify the kindness and mercy of God, but in the special sense in which we consider it in our Church an indulgence is a remission of the temporal punishment due to sin, the guilt of which has been forgiven. Used Postage Stamps: To date we have received close to 4,000 used postage stamps. If you have any old or cancelled stamps, they can be left into the Parish Office or church sacristies and we will send them along to the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart to support their work on the missions. Stamps can be from any country but should not have tears, rips or damaged/cut perforations. Many thanks to all those people who have already left in old and used stamps. Arriving in the Church: Usually when we come into God’s house we bow our heads or go down on one knee. This is called ‘genuflection’. It shows respect and love for Jesus. We genuflect or bow in front of the tabernacle, the special place where Jesus is present at all times. The tabernacle may be behind the altar or to one side of it. There will be a red light near the tabernacle, called the Sanctuary Lamp. This light tells us that Jesus, the Blessed Sacrament, is present inside. The Blessed Sacrament is another name for Jesus. Peace and union are the most necessary of all things for men, who live in common, And nothing serves so well to establish and maintain these as the forbearing charity Whereby we put up with one another's defects.
