Lake Kiowa WGA Raised $60,300 For Abigail's Arms
It is the time of year to start
thinking about candidates
for the LKPOA Board of
Directors. This year there
will be three directors to be
elected. Three will be retiring
after serving their terms: Craig
Lamkin, Brent Reed, and Jay
Titus. Accordingly, we would
like to have six candidates on
the ballot.
The
LKPOA
Board
of
Directors
has
the
responsibility to govern our
community and to preserve
our LKPOA common assets
and amenities. You can
appreciate how important this
process of elections is to the
preservation and protection
of our individual rights and
property values. The decisions
made by our board are vital to
the stability and growth of our
community.
We need people of integrity
that are interested, intelligent,
and involved to be presented
on the ballot. Each director is
elected to serve a three-year
term. Please devote some
time in consideration of who
you would like to see serve
our community by becoming
a candidate to be a director of
the LKPOA.

the LKPOA nominating

and election process.

Travinskyy has won prizes in
numerous piano competitions across
the globe including 1st prize at the
Sorantin Music Competition, 3rd
prize at the California International
Young Artist Competition, 4th prize
at the Valesesia-Musica International
Competition (Italy) and 1st prize at the
International Wideman
Piano
Competition
in
Shreveport,
Louisiana.
Konstantyn
was
invited to study with
Vladimir
Viardo,
Artist-in Residence
of the University of
North Texas, where
he completed his
Master’s degree in
May 2010 and is
currently pursuing his Doctorate
degree in piano performance. He
is a recipient of Toulouse Graduate
School scholarship as well as College
of Music and Viardo Fellowship
Foundation scholarships.
In addition to his competition
accomplishments, Konstantyn made
several major performances in the
U.S. including his Chicago debut at the
Dame Myra Hess Series, which was
broadcast live on WFMT, the city’s
classical radio station. His orchestral
performances include appearances
with the Domenico Cimarosa
Symphony Orchestra in Italy, the
National Philharmonic Symphony
Orchestra of Ukraine, the University
of North Texas Symphony Orchestra,
and the Shreveport Symphony
Orchestra. After his
performance with the
latter, The Shreveport
Times stated, “He has
a wonderfully precise
style of fingering and
approach,
equally
adept at capturing the
drama of the work as
well as its melodic
content.”
Mr.
Travinskyy
also has been invited
to perform for the Eastfield Piano
Festival, National Dance Festival,
Texas Conservatory for Young Artists,
the Chopin Society of Mid-America
in Oklahoma, as well as other series
in California, Mississippi, and Texas.
Konstantyn’s talent continues to
delight his audiences in countries
such as Ukraine, Russia, Mexico, and
the United States.


Community Manager’s Report
Hello Kiowans!
I hope that everyone had a fun endof-summer holiday on Labor Day and
a safe Halloween with all the little
ones trying to fill their sacks with
candy. But now it’s on to November
and the kickoff to the holiday season.
On Tuesday, Nov. 11 we will be
saluting our veterans in the Lodge at
what has become an annual event. There
will be food, drink, a guest speaker, with
all this culminating with a dance. At the
event we celebrate our veterans, but we
should never forget those veterans who
are no longer with us and remember
them and their families in our thoughts
and in our prayers.
The Lodge is again celebrating
Thanksgiving with a Thanksgiving
Day Buffet. This year’s celebration
includes all the traditional favorites
along with some new items. Awardwinning Ukrainian pianist Konstantyn
Travinskyy will provide
entertainment throughout
the event. He has performed
in Italy as well as in Chicago,
New York, Oklahoma,
Mississippi, California, and
Texas. This event sells out
every year so please make
your reservations early.
On to work: our fall cleanup is
scheduled from Thursday, Nov. 13
through Saturday, Nov. 15. Remember:
no hazardous materials, batteries,
tires, etc. will be accepted.
On a final note, we’re close to
issuing the new Lake Kiowa member
identification cards. These cards will
replace the paper cards with new cards
that are similar to a credit card. The
cards will have a photo of the member
on the card as well as the member’s
information pertaining to their lot
imprinted on a magnetic strip.
ROTARY 2014 FLAG
PROGRAM CONCLUDES
The new cards provide
several benefits to the
members that include:
Increased security The cards will be disabled
when the member or
lessee moves away from
Lake
Kiowa,
which
will prevent them from
re-entering the community once they
have moved.
Reduced cost - Like your other
credit cards, the new cards will last
for years. This will save printing and
labor costs each year for new cards.
Convenience - The new cards along
with their guest cards will be mailed
to the member, eliminating the need
to come to the LKPOA office to pick
up the cards.
Improved accuracy - The
information on the cards will be
incorporated into the new accounting
system, allowing charges at the Lodge
to be applied accurately to your lot.
Visibility Charges will be
available for review by the member
on the website.
Expandability - Future plans
include incorporating the Pro Shop
into the database. The members’
identification cards could be used to
purchase goods and pay for guest tee
times with the charges applied to the
member’s lot.
The member application form soon
will be available on the Lake Kiowa
website. If a computer is unavailable,
the application can be submitted at the
LKPOA office where staff members
will help you complete the form. Stay
tuned for more information to come.

Fall Cleanup
Nov. 13 - 15
The Gainesville Rotary Club Flag Program has had a very
successful year here at Lake Kiowa. We had 235 paid subscribers
who displayed a flag (in some cases, several flags) in front of their homes. This
figure represents an increase of 20 subscribers compared with last year.
This display of patriotism is very moving in and of itself, not to mention the
philanthropic programs our club is able to carry out throughout Cooke County,
regionally, and internationally using the funds donated. We are able to have so
many flags displayed here, because approximately 75 percent of our subscribers
take care of the flags themselves during the year. We Rotarians thank all of you
very much for your continued support.
We will end this calendar year’s program on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11.
At that time, we want to collect, inspect, and replace the flags, where necessary.
We plan to collect all the flags that our volunteers usually put out for the folks
who don’t handle the flags themselves. If you are handling the flag yourself and
your flag requires replacement, please leave it out so we can collect it.
You can expect to receive a letter next spring (in March or early April) with
the information on the 2015 program. At that time, we hope you will fill out
the application and send it in. The requested donation next year will remain at
$40.

They asked her several times to enter
it in the State Fair of Texas. Finally,
she agreed to enter it this year. She
won a Premium Blue Ribbon for the
latch hook division at the State Fair.
The rug is about 5 by 3 feet with a
well-designed form of the State of
Texas with different parts depicting
the beauty of Texas in the middle. To
the east, she has trees and flowers. To
the west, it is plain for the flat land.
There is the Alamo, an oil derrick, and
the State Capitol. The four corners
have the UT orange shape of Texas
and the State flag is in the middle at
the top part of the rug.
Mary worked on this for six months
and the result proved to be a Blue
Ribbon design.

Dear Kiowa friends:
As we are packing and going through
many boxes of items for our move, we
are reminded of the good times we had
while living here at beautiful Lake Kiowa.
It has been great to share time with you
in the Chapel, Supper Club, Friends of
the Lodge, my singing group, Computer
Club (where we met, and you watched
the courtship and marriage of a couple
of “old” teenagers), Kiowa Woman’s
Club, Gourmet Groups, the Kiowa travel
group, Kiwanis Club, July 4th, Gainesville
churches, and on and on.
We began travelling to escape the
Texas weather and allergies, and to
enjoy our new life together. In our travels
we visited many beautiful places and
decided we may as well live where
we can find great weather for the time
we are there. Thus came the Punta
Gorda, Florida condo at Burnt Store
Marina for winters. Of course, summer
in Texas can be unbearable so we
continued the search for escape, and
just last May discovered the southwest
corner of North Carolina. Another
lovely condo on a small lake in the
mountain community of Sapphire, and
we decided to buy it for the summer
months. The realization then hit –
when would we ever be in Texas? So
therefore we are moving away.
We wanted to say good-bye and
tell you we enjoyed our time with you,
in-between travels, and thank you
for all the friendships we have made
here. Lake Kiowa is a great place,
especially for golfers and boaters, if
you enjoy the Texas weather. We do
love the Gulf Coast of Florida and
now “the Mountains are calling and we
must go”…… as they poetically say in
North Carolina.

Dear Bill,
Once again I am writing, because I
feel some who own property here do
not care about our community. Not
everyone, but numerous. Those I’m
referring to are the ones who let their
pet poop in other folk’s yard and don’t
pick it up.
It really is easy to do, pick it up that
is, and you don’t mess up your hands.
Those of you who get newspapers, the
plastic cover is good, and those of you
who don’t can use the bags you get
when you grocery shop. Then put the
plastic in your trash can. See! No dirty
hands. Easy, isn’t it?
Another thing that really looks good?
Cigarette butts and filters on the golf
course! Suggestion; when on number
2 tee box or number 3, look in the trash
bucket by the ball washer and get a
bottle or can and put it in a cup holder
on your cart to hold the remains of
your cigarette in it. Oh, yes, and those
of you who throw them out your car
window. That’s not too cool, either.
Thanks for your help in keeping Kiowa
the pretty and clean community we
can enjoy.

Mary Smith Wins Blue Ribbon At Texas State Fair

Mary Smith moved to Lake Kiowa
from Texarkana about four years ago
to be near her son, Tommy Jackson,
and daughter-in-law Vickie Jackson.
Mary has had numerous hobbies
such as bowling, gardening, canasta,
traveling, and making things like latch
hook rugs and a 4-foot by 3-foot doll
house, including the furniture and
curtains, for her granddaughters. She
passes time by designing and making
latch hook rugs or wall hanging art.
In 2005, Mary designed a rug in the
Cooke County Electric Charitable Foundation
Assists Community

These organizations meet the criteria and exemplify the mission

honored to have the opportunity to assist in the funding of these
programs.

MONTAGUE COUNTY CARPENTER SHOP,
The Cooke County Electric Charitable Foundation is pleased to
announce its initial distribution of funds. A $10,000 donation was
made to Montague County Carpenter Shop, along with $4639.81
to CASA of North Texas and $2000 to the Bettie M. Luke Muenster
Public Library
CCECF was formed as a catalyst to distribute funds generated
from the Cooke County Electric Cooperative Association Operation Round Up program. The collected “rounded up” pennies
from member-owners’ monthly bills are used to assist members in
the CCECA service area.
CCECF is a nonprofit organization. An independent board of directors made up of your community leaders governs CCECF and
oversees the distribution of funds. The board members offer their
time and resources free of charge.

One of the most challenging
things for seniors is selecting the
best prescription drug plan for the
coming year. Many choose to stay on
the plan they currently have without
researching which plan will work best
for them in the coming year.
Important to remember: deductibles
change, formularies change, monthly
premiums change, the tier of the drugs
change, all without you knowing
until it is too late to do anything for
12 months. Annual enrollment began
Oct. 15 and will end Dec. 7. During
this time, you may change to the best
plan for you.
Many seniors choose a plan with the
lowest premium. However, this seldom
is the best and can cost you more over
the 12-month period. It is important
to do the research on www.medicare.
gov. I will be glad to teach you how
to do the research for yourself, your
parents, or friends.
Example: One of the first clients I
helped this year told me she “liked her
plan and wanted to keep it.” However,
after I did the research, I found one
of her meds was removed from the
formulary and her current plan would
have cost her an additional $3500
more than if she changed plans.

A student utilizes a new tablet.
One of the new 2/ter mobile
computer labs.
Six new mobile 2/ter (Tutor)
computer labs, with 30 tablets each,
have arrived at the Callisburg HS/
MS Campus. The mobile carts are
housed in certain classrooms for
students to use daily. Teachers in
English, Scientific Research and
Design, Biology, US History, and UIL
academic classes are finding these labs
to be an added benefit to the learning
process. Students are enjoying the
benefits of having endless information
at their fingertips and the portability
of the new computers.
The district was able to purchase
the new mobile labs with the help
of the Women’s Golf Association of
Lake Kiowa. The WGA conducted
a fundraiser last fall that raised over
$46,000 to help purchase the mobile
labs. Callisburg ISD superintendent
Steve Clugston said, “the district is
extremely grateful for the help of the
WGA and seeing the finished product
in action gets you excited about the
future of learning.” The district plans
to add more mobile lab carts each year
to continue to enhance the learning
process.

Facebook openly admits that the
service is free simply because the
company sells your information to
advertisers. It’s not hard to understand
this.
What is hard to understand,
however, is just how much information
you could have given to Facebook
since you’ve been using the service.
Everything that you’ve “Liked” has
said something about your tastes.
Everything that you’ve posted can be
data mined by clever advertisers for
more information.
You may have even heard about
Facebook’s newest marketing tool.
It’s a massive ad network designed to
distribute everything everywhere. This
ad network takes advantage of the
massive amount of data that Facebook
has for all of its users. It’s more than
you’d think, that’s for sure.
Facebook’s ad network takes the
knowledge that Facebook has about
you and applies it to almost any app
on your Smartphone. This means that

company has admitted a few things.

3. KEEP TRACK OF THE DATA
YOU POST ON FACEBOOK
How do you keep track of the
data you post on Facebook? Well,
depending on how much you post,
it might be impossible. What you
can do, though, is keep track of who
can see posts after certain dates. You
do this by keeping to a Facebook
“maintenance” schedule.
Facebook gives you tools to manage
your presence on their site. While this
won’t protect you from advertisers
and information brokers, it will make
sure people on your Facebook friends
list won’t get too much information if
they snoop around on your profile.

KIWANIS AT WORK AGAIN
Lake Kiowa Kiwanis was at work
again on Sept. 20, replacing rotted
boards on the teachers’ bench at
Callisburg Elementary School and
painting the playground equipment
with a preservative that also makes the
surface less slippery for the kids. In an
earlier project, Kiwanis replaced all
the rotted boards on the playground
equipment.

some real bargains bought in the silent

help the kids.

Our two ministers, John Hare and
J. Ray Smith, will be preaching on
alternative Sundays. J. Ray Smith will
be starting a new series, “Nuggets
from the Psalms.” On Nov. 2 he will
preach on “What’s Delightful about
the Law,” Psalm 1:1-3. On Nov. 16
he will preach on “The Secret for a
Good Night’s Sleep,” Psalm 4:8. On
Nov. 30 his topic will be “Reasons
to be Thankful When You don’t feel
Thankful,” Psalm 100:4-5.
On Nov. 9 John Hare will be
preaching on “Risk-taking Service,”
Matthew 25:31-45. On Nov. 23 his
subject will be “The Reason for the
Reason,” Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10.
Our choir will entertain us with
their beautiful song on Sunday,
Nov. 16. Choir practice is held on
Monday mornings at 8 a.m. under the
leadership of Glenn Wilson.
The Chapel congregation voted to
send $1,000 to aid the families of the
students who were killed or injured
in the terrible bus crash that was
responsible for killing four members
of the NCTC girls’ softball team.
Look at the showcase in the Lodge
hallway to see all the agencies and
organizations the Kiowa Chapel has
aided and continues to aid in our
community. You will be amazed and
very proud of our contributions.
Chapel is sad to say good-bye to two
members, Phyllis and Nels Thomsen,
who will be leaving us to live in Florida
and North Carolina, depending on the
season. We are pleased to welcome
back Gloria Sullo after her medical
leave from Lake Kiowa.

The Gainesville Christian Women’s Connection (GCWC) November
Brunch will be Thursday, Nov. 20 at 401 W. Garnett, Gainesville TX. The
event time is 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the cost is $8 per person. Brunch will be
catered by Lone Oak Ranch and Retreat.
The keynote speaker will be Kitty Kane, a singer, composer, and author.
Kitty’s theme is “Home to Hollywood and Back,” which illustrates the
often humorous struggles of her life.
The annual Stonecroft Fall Fundraiser will feature an auction. Auction
items will include a golf outing for four at Turtle Hill with a golf cart, a
one-night stay at the Shady Lady with $75 dining at Sara’s, gift certificates
from Fischer’s Meats in Muenster, a $100 gift certificate from Hobie’s of
Nocona, a Christmas centerpiece from Vine and Branches in Gainesville,
and a variety of new designer purses such as two Vera Wang bags.

Summer is really over and everyone
is home from their travels. There were
20 quilters at our October meeting of
the Kiowa Quilt Bee. Sharon Catlett
led the meeting and reviewed the
concerns and health of some of the
members.
There was a review of the Gainesville
Common Threads Guild’s newsletter
to keep everyone informed about their
activities. Sharon also asked those
members that were planning to go to
the Houston show to note new products
and perhaps share some photos.
The next meeting of the Quilt Bee
will be Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. while the
Kay Marshall shows a large tote
bag that she recently finished.

We held elections for new officers
in the Fire Department. Captain Ben
Hatton decided not to seek re-election.
As a result we have a new captain
and a new lieutenant. The officers

Mark Bitsche, Captain; Lou Vander
Molen, Lieutenant; Monroe Salsman,
Lieutenant.
I want to thank Ben for all the
time and work he has put into this
department. He has spent many hours
training all the firefighters as well as
helping me get used to the Texas Fire
Service. Ben will stay on with the
department as a volunteer and I am
happy about that.
We responded to 18 calls for service
in September. This is the first time
that 50% of the calls were inside and
outside the gates. We did have one
structure fire inside Lake Kiowa that
caused about $17,000 in damage. We
have responded to 207 calls for the
year.

October now has come and gone.
Winter is beginning to show itself
with recent temperatures being in
the low 50s to low 80s. Beautiful fall
weather, as they say. I am sure that the
leaves will be turning by the time you
are reading this. I love the gorgeous
colors and the pleasant temperatures.
The lake continues to cool and
is at 72º F now. The lake level is
approximately 1¾ feet low. We were
blessed with some rain in October, but
we need more to fill the lake to normal
pool. I am not hearing about many
good catches yet, but this has to pick
up soon. Winter fishing can be some
of the most exciting times on the lake.
First off, you are one of the few that
brave the elements to get out, but even
more so, because the big fish come
out to play! Don’t expect lots of bites,
but be ready, because you don’t want
to tell the story about the one that got
away. You always know when folks
don’t believe you. You see the head
nods and rolling eyes.
Many of you will be using your boats
less in the coming months and need
to begin thinking about winterizing
Tooey finished third. Peyton Eiland
was the 8-to-10 age-group winner.
Gabrielle Bitsche finished second,
with Colton Chapman and Cannon
Sharp ending up in a third-place tie.
Grayson Bee won our youngest group,
kids 2 to 7 years old. Second place
went to Owen Mc Donald and Braxton
Ostermann finished third. In less than
two hours, 125 fish were caught. This
was a great time for all. If you have
never made it out to experience this
event, plan to be attend the spring
2015 Kid Fish event.
Our bass tournament on Sept. 19
provided us some bigger stringers.
Morning temperatures were somewhat
cool, but warmed into a beautiful
afternoon. Weigh-in was held at 2 p.m.
Jordan Grant’s fish as second runnerup weighed in at 10.57lbs; Jordan
Grant still is pushing for the lead in
this year’s standings. First runner-up
with a total weight of 11.30lbs with
his picture in the paper again was
Tim Purks. This guy is going to be
dangerous next year. Winner Chris
Henry had a very impressive string
at 18.48lbs, moving him up in the
standings for Angler of the Year. Mike
Brindle hit the scales with Big Bass
at 6.65lbs. See, Mike! It helps to win
when you’re in the Big Fish pot. Also,
always remember to tip your guide!
Here is a quick update on the
your watercraft. It is always good to
drain your boat and the lower unit of
water. This will prevent freezing and
potential damage during the colder
times to come.
The Kid Fish event held on Oct. 11
was a great success. Some 500 pounds
of catfish were introduced into Little
Fox Pond. Approximately 50 children
fished with friends and family. Lots of
fun was had by all. The weather was
a little cool and it was damp due to
rain the night before. With that being
said, the fishing started off with a
great number of bites early on. These
folks weren’t just fishing, they were
“Catching!” Each participant under
16 received a free fishing pole to take
home. And hopefully these poles are
now broken in and will continue to
CATCH.
NASCOGA was once again present
and did a great job. Everyone had
hot dogs, chips, and drinks that
NASCOGA provided. Many thanks
go out to them for supporting the
LKACC and the Kid Fish event. The
LKACC also rented a bounce house
from AGM Party Rentals; this always
is a big hit with the children.
The Kid Fish winners were: Logan
Bronnenberg caught the first fish.
Logan also won the 11-and-over age
group. Dante Royal tied for second
place with Caytie Coco, and Chandler
grass carp. The permit request has
been submitted and we will await an
answer and delivery date. Remember
this fact: you may not see immediate
results next year. With your continued
support we can overcome our current
challenges and build programs to
make this awesome community even
better.

Message From the President ...

We had a great October meeting.

our own Gainesville community.

highlight our Welcoming Committee.

October Garden & Nature club met at the Shugart home. More than 30 attended the meeting.

Hope y’all have felt fall in the air.
The nice cool mornings and evenings
are so pleasant. Makes you think about
all the things that need to be done in
the garden for fall. Like those pesky
skunks and armadillos digging around
in your yards. How do you get rid of
these critters organically? According
to local county experts, your choices
are 1) get a dog; 2) put up a fence;
3) get a trap. All prove to be solid
choices. There are also several home
remedies to eliminate critter activity –
red pepper, fox urine, etc., but the rain
eventually washes it off, and you have
to repeat the activity.
And then there are the fall fertilizer
issues: Do I fertilize in the fall or
in the spring and what type
fertilizer do I use? Same
expert says use organic
fertilizer mid-September to
mid-October with a fertilizer
that has a large third number in the
title, which means more potassium.
You still have time to do this since we
are having warm fall weather. Repeat
in the springtime. So, the
answer is—fertilize in both
spring and fall!

Kiowa Woman’s Club Christmas Tour
The
Kiowa
Woman’s Club is
proud to present
its 2014 Tour of
Homes participants.
We can again offer some beautiful and
unique homes for you to tour because
of the generosity of the homeowners
of Lake Kiowa. We truly appreciate
those who have opened their doors to
us. Don’t miss this opportunity to get
acquainted with these homes and the
people who own them.
This year’s event will be on
Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m.
Tickets are available for $10 from the
Lodge Office, POA Office, LKSUD
Office, and from the homes of Clara
Lemming, Marilyn Board, Sharon
Wolek, and myself. Cash or checks
will be accepted. They will also be
available at the November Woman’s
Club meeting.
If you miss presales, tickets may be
purchased the day of the tour at the
door at any of the homes on the tour
for $12. Since this is a major fundraiser
for the KWC, we ask each person that
attends to purchase a ticket. We will
be collecting them at the door and
stamping your hand to make it easy to
get into each home on a timely basis.

Folsom purchased their
home at 1010 Kiowa
Dr. E. in April, 2013
and relocated full-time
to Lake Kiowa from Georgetown,
Texas. Needless to say, what attracted
them most to this home was the great
room, which includes a large kitchen
and dining area and fantastic views of
Lake Kiowa from any vantage. The
travertine tile is perfect for lake living
(and small grandchildren’s feet!) and
the large granite island gets a lot of
use for food preparation as well as
a family gathering place. The area
most used, however, is the covered
back porch. The breeze off the lake
makes for pleasant mornings spent
bird watching as well as observing
the busy lake activities, and the
outdoor fireplace provides warmth
and comfort in cool fall and winter
evenings. Finally, the covered dock is
home to the family’s watercraft and
provides easy lake access. They love
their home, their friends, and the Lake
Kiowa lifestyle. Welcome to their
home!
Gary and Penny Cotten
designed and built their
home at 112 Comanche
Dr. E. in 2013 to create
a comfortable place for
family gatherings and guests. The
design reflects “new country” with
colors of red and blue, distressed
cabinetry, and bead board paneling.
The grandchildren’s bedroom has four
built-in bunk beds and a hand-painted
baseball mural to highlight the theme.
A junior master suite welcomes
guests and will accommodate future
family needs. The oversized laundry
room also serves as a sewing and craft
room. Large windows in the kitchen
and living room invite the outdoors
in. Porches with swings and rocking
chairs provide quiet and peaceful
places to sit and visit. The patio
kitchen is a favorite place for casual
dining, especially when the grandsons
visit.
Leahray and John
Wroten purchased the
home at 433 Kiowa
Dr. W. in 2013. A few
updates grew into a
remodeling project. Some of the
changes include filling in the ‘80’s
sunken living area and putting in
hardwood floors, adding a gourmet
kitchen, updating the baths, installing
new lakeview windows, screening in a
porch, and claiming a covered garage
walkway for a laundry room. Moving
the air conditioning and tankless
water heater to the attic freed up some
closet space. Screen doors saved from
Leahray’s Serendipity Shop in Angel
Fire were used for the porch and
pantry. A new front door, mailbox, and
landscaping completed the updates
that were expertly accomplished by
Bluebonnet Homes. This cozy home,
with a large live oak tree shading the
back deck, is filled with some of the
owners’ favorite things. They enjoy
experiencing Serendipity in Kiowa
when they catch the blue herons and
pelicans fishing in Lone Wolf Cove.

Morrison love their home
at 103 Chism Cv. E. The
builder was inspired by
farmhouses across Texas
when he built it. Antique screen doors
and windows collected from old
farms give it a country charm. Two
antique stained glass windows from
an old home in Gainesville hang in the
kitchen, a gift from Jim to Danette.
The large front porch has an embedded
antique manhole cover from an old
Texas town. One side of the house
is a screened-in porch to sit and look
out to the wooded lot. The floors
are scored concrete with embedded
horseshoes and leaf imprints and the
ceilings are tall. A painted Texas flag
is framed by a window from an old
bar in Gruene, Texas. The home is
simple and comfortable and a retreat
for family and friends.

Keckonen’s home at
212 Kiowa Dr. E. was
built in 1977. It has had
only three owners with
Tom and Lynn being the only full-time
residents. It was originally named the
Ark and each owner has kept this name
over many years. The rooster on the
mailbox is a new landmark in Kiowa!
Their goal has been to preserve the
Ark feel of the house and rustic flavor
while making needed improvements.
The bar was redone and has eleven
thousand pennies inlaid into the
surface. It took them a whole winter
and lots of wine to complete. Tom,
as well as the first owner, loves to
work with wood. He handcrafted the
shuffleboard table, master bedroom
furniture, and the bunk room. The
motorcycle in the loft took over a year
to complete and is made mostly from
wood. Lynn’s passion was to create
and decorate a home that made you
feel that you were walking through
a story. The bunk room, their latest
project, is named the “Ark” and was
built for their four grandchildren.
They spend a part of each day on the
porch, their favorite part of the house.
They feel so blessed to be here in this
wonderful community and consider
Kiowa their forever home!

Working with Sofey Designs, Cheryl
chose expansive front doors and an
exotic chandelier as the welcoming
features and Pete chose the expansive
9-foot Fusion granite island to
accommodate a multi-cook family.
The unique stone sinks, and the variety
of granite throughout the house, give
it a warm, but modern, feel. With its
bamboo and rock wall, the master
bath has an expansive whirlpool bath
and lake view, giving it a spa-like feel.
Even the dock, the gas fire pit, and
the large bi-level deck were designed
with entertaining in mind and have
become their favorite place to relax
with music, the outdoor TV, or just
enjoy the view.

LAKE KIOWA WGA RAISES $60,000 FOR ABIGAIL’S ARMS, THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SUPPORTERS!
The annual WGA charity events—
Girls Night Out held on Sept. 16, the
charity dinner and auction held on
Sept. 30, and the Sustaining Hope
Golf Tournament on Oct. 1 raised
over $60,000 for the Abigail’s Arms
Family Crisis Shelter.
Abigail’s Arms has been a consistent
part of the work of eliminating
violence for over 30 years. They are
a nonprofit organization that serves
victims of domestic/intimate partner
violence, sexual assault, and other
violent crimes. Their mission is to
provide safety, promote stability,
and assist in the holistic healing and
restoration of women, girls, men,
boys, and families. Abigail’s Arms
had their grand opening of a new
facility in May, so their bricks and
mortar are paid for. The funds raised
by the WGA will be used for the
children’s recreational and cultural
programs.
The community has been very
generous in support of Abigail’s Arms
during this year’s events. There were
97 golf tournament hole sponsors
(most of them noted in the October
CommuniQué) and 121 auction item,
food, and service contributors to the
event. Besides being a great benefit to
fighting domestic violence, the Girls
Night Out entertainment was terrific,
the food organized by the Abigail’s
Arms Committee was exceptional,
and the golf tournament was great
fun. The LKWGA and Abigail’s
Arms would like to thank all who
made this year’s charity event a big
success financially for Abigail’s Arms
and socially for Lake Kiowa!

The
end
of
September with the
club championship
and the beginning
of
October
with
the charity tournament
provided plenty of golf and
fun activities for the WGA. A
still warm day on Oct. 8 brought
out 42 players for the monthly
scramble. The monthly General
Meeting followed the scramble.
Our ending bank balance as of
9/30/14 was $10,284.71. Earmarked
money totaled $1,787.30, leaving a
true ending balance of $8,497.41. It
was announced that Leanne Bitsche
shot a 97 and received her “Broke
100” pin. Our total membership now
stands at 242. Please welcome new
members Connie Fisher, Theresa
Lonergen, Sam Noble, and Dorothy
Shearer.
Karen Brewton reported that the
Nominating Committee has almost
filled the proposed slate for 2015
WGA officers. We will be voting on
this slate of officers at our November
WGA general meeting.
The membership voted to reallocate
monies previously earmarked for
landscaping to go toward the purchase
of an ice machine. The machine will
be housed in the cart barn and will
be used during tournaments and after
golf socials. This was a joint purchase
with the MGA. Begin thinking of
how you would like to use any excess
funds from 2014 and e-mail your
suggestions to President Brewton.
With the end of 2014 approaching,
Genevieve Avinger is already working
on the Christmas lunch scheduled
for Dec. 3 and she needs help with
decorating. Please give her a call if
you want to help. Also, Katherine
Thacker and Maureen Anselmi are
working on the Christmas dinner and
dance scheduled for Dec. 5. Tickets
will go on sale at the Nov. 5 meeting.
You should mark your calendars for
these end-of-year events and join
in the holiday festivities for fun and
fellowship with your fellow WGA
members.
The Club Championship Tournament
was blessed with good weather and had
34 players competing in the 18-hole
group and 8 players competing in the
9-hole group. Your 2014 18-hole Club
Champion is Carolyn Pannell and your
9-hole Club Champion is Sally Houk.
Margaret Dressel and her committee
of Gwen Mullins, Maureen Anselmi,
and Barbara Cole did a super job in
making this a very successful and fun
tournament. It takes lots of support to
host a tournament and thanks go to the
committee, Brown McCrory, the Pro
Shop staff, and all the sponsors who
donated food, refreshments, snacks,
and goodies for the tournament.
The Sustaining Hope Charity Golf
Tournament benefiting Abigail’s Arms
Family Crisis Shelter in Gainesville
was a very successful event due to
all the hard work of Chairperson Lori
Brindle, her assistant Toni Andrews,
the committee members, MGA
members, and a host of volunteers.
Money-makers for the event were
Girls' Night Out, hole sponsors, a
silent auction, live auction, a Mexican
dinner hosted by Abigail’s Arms,
donations, and 107 ladies participating
in the tournament. A total of $60,300
was raised for Abigail’s Arms due
to the hard work of all involved. It
definitely takes an army to pull off
such a successful event and the WGA
Board appreciates what everyone did
in supporting this worthy cause.
Please do your part by repairing
pitch marks on the greens and filling
divots. These are small tasks we can
all do to help keep our course looking
good.
Nov. 5 will be the next scramble,
meeting, and lunch. Election of
officers is on the agenda.

DID YOU KNOW…
That two basic premises underlie the USGA Handicap
System? Namely that each player will try to make the
best score at every hole in every round and that the player
will post every acceptable round for peer review. The
player and the player’s Handicap Committee have joint
responsibility for adhering to these premises. As a player
you must post a nine-hole score if you play 7 to 12 holes
and post an eighteen-hole score if you play 13 or more
holes. Scores for any unplayed holes must be recorded as
par plus any handicap strokes you are entitled to receive.
Further, it is your responsibility to insure that all scores
are posted accurately. If you fail to post all your scores,
your handicap becomes just that, a handicap—not only
to you in individual play, but also to your teammates in
team play. Failure to accurately post your acceptable
scores undermines the purpose of the USGA Handicap
System, which is to make the game of golf more enjoyable
by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on
an equitable basis. While we all have different abilities,
we are peers on our golf course and our play is subject to
peer review. Peer review is the ability of golfers to gain an
understanding of a player’s potential ability and to form a
reasonable basis for supporting or disputing a score that
has been posted. If your peers dispute your handicap, it
will come to the Handicap Committee for resolution.
Ultimately it is you, the player, who insures the integrity
of your handicap and the handicap system. It’s simple to
do: play your best on every hole and accurately post all
your acceptable scores.

tournament! There were four flights
based on total couple handicap. The

Texas hold'em poker
It has been great to
see a number of our poker buddies
return to Kiowa after spending the
summer in cooler climates. It is always
enjoyable to hear stories of their
travels, and share updates on what has
been happening here at Lake Kiowa
while they have been away. If you are
new to Lake Kiowa and like playing
cards, please consider joining us on
Wednesdays and Fridays. The game is
free, the laughter is in abundance, and
I guarantee you will enjoy socializing
with a diverse and friendly group of
people.
B.R. Clements had another fantastic
poker month. He won the tournament,
had the second-highest number of
points for the month, and he had four
jacks. The jacks were in fact a frequent
visitor to the tables. B.R. had luck with
them and so did Elaine Blackwell and
Truman Houk. Kim Howell had good
luck with four eights, Curtis Walker
enjoyed the winnings from his four
sevens, and Harold Bosse had fun
with his four twos. We also celebrated
Frank Amthor’s birthday with a
delicious German chocolate cake.

SECURITY REPORT
Oct. 16
The officers who staff
Security’s Animal Control
component certainly earned
their pay this past month
attempting to corral twentythree stray dogs, twentytwo varmints, and one
stray donkey. One dog was
transported to Noah’s Ark shelter
in Gainesville. No other reportable
activity garnered anywhere close to
those numbers, but Security patrol did
make seven traffic stops for observed
moving violations. Two motor vehicle
accidents were investigated, three
motorists were given assistance, and
warnings were given to three golf cart
operators for rules violations. Seven
welfare checks were performed, two
unlocked doors were discovered,
and three trash out too early notices
were dispensed. Response was also
indicated to five business alarms, two
residence alarms, and one 9-1-1 hang
up.
Two incidents of criminal mischief
were reported, including damage to
a pickup in the 500 block of Kiowa
Dr. W. and the uprooting of a mailbox
in the 1200 block of Kiowa Dr. E.
Security patrol investigated
two suspicious vehicles,
two reports of suspected
prowlers,
a
suspicious
person, a disturbing the peace
complaint, and a reported
theft. One party of revelers
was removed from the West
Beach after closing, one party of
golfers was removed from a closed
course, and a group of kids playing
volleyball was removed from the
tennis court.
Cooke County Sheriff’s Office
deputies were dispatched to Lake
Kiowa to assist Security with a welfare
check, a suspicious vehicle, and with
the aforementioned donkey. Four
citations were issued by the Security
Department and are categorized as
follows: Speeding – two, Damage to
Property – one, and Unauthorized Use
of Id Card – one. Twenty-one ICVFD
page-outs were monitored by Security
dispatch. On six occasions, Security
Medical First Responders were
dispatched to medical emergencies
within Lake Kiowa.

GOLF COURSE UPDATE
Fall is finally here.
Cool nights and highs
in the 80s. Leaves are
changing colors. This
might be my favorite
time of the year. That
being said, there is
no slowing down in the Golf Course
Maintenance Department.
Beginning the week of Oct. 20,
we will begin our fall pre-emergence
herbicide application. We will focus on
sensitive areas around greens first. After
we complete the greens surrounds,
we will spray “wall to wall.” This will
include all turf areas except greens. This
is a very time-consuming process and
may take up to two weeks to complete.
We will do our best not to interfere with
golf.
Also, we have begun our switch out in
our annual flowerbeds. This week, we
removed old plant material and prepped
the beds for our winter annual flowers.
We will begin planting new flowers
during the week of Oct. 20.
October 28, 2014 will mark my oneyear anniversary. The last year has been
a whirlwind. It seems to have flown by,
but, at times, especially in March and
April, days seemed to be excruciatingly
long. I have learned a ton this past year.
The brutal winter presented a multitude
of challenges in the spring and early
summer. One thing that remained
constant throughout that time was the
support that I received from you, the
membership. It would have been easy
to lose faith in me and my staff, but we
developed a plan, communicated that
plan, and executed that plan. As a result,
the golf course is in very good shape
heading into the winter. Beginning
last month, I modified my weekly
nutrient application to include more
potassium. Increased potassium helps
with carbohydrate storage within the
plant. This allows the plant to have an
energy reserve to use when it comes out
of dormancy in the spring.
In September, I went to the MGA
Board of Directors and asked for
volunteers to help pull covers on greens
this winter when the temperatures drop.
The response was excellent. Thank you
to those that signed up to help. Let’s
hope that we don’t need to put the covers
on very often this winter.
Again, thank you for all of your
support over the last year! I look forward
to more years here at Lake Kiowa.

If you have received a citation and have questions, all rules can be found on
the Lake Kiowa Website. Additionally, you may call Gary Davidson at (940)
665-3221 or Randy Schmaltz at (940) 665-1055. All written notifications will
be mailed directly to you as soon as possible. Parents or guardians of minors
will be notified immediately if their child has received a citation.
In accordance with Rule 4.2.7.C, the LKPOA is required to post the names
and lot numbers of repeat rule offenders. Rule 4.2.7.C states: “Two or more
infractions of the same rule, two or more infractions in the same category, or
more than one Serious or Major infraction in any combination and regardless of
the rule or category within (1) year are considered a repeat offense. In all cases
the names of repeat offenders will be printed in the Association newspaper.”

Autumn has come to
Lake Kiowa and with it brings seasonal
changes at the Lodge.
We will be introducing a seasonally
inspired Limited Time Offer (LTO) the
first week of November, so come in and
enjoy it with us. Our Autumn Harvest
LTO will feature the flavors of pumpkin,
turkey, salmon, sweet potatoes, and
maple syrup.
We also will be serving a delicious
buffet on Thanksgiving Day – with the
first seating at 11 a.m. and the second
at noon. Ukrainian pianist Konstantyn
Travinskyy will provide wonderful
background music while you dine.
Holiday parties are also in full swing
and our schedule is starting to fill up.

PUBLIC WORKS MANAGER REPORT
Public Works
Public Works would
like to remind everyone
that the fall cleanup
is
scheduled
for
Nov. 13-15. As usual,
there will be no
hazardous materials or chemicals
allowed. This includes batteries, paint,
containers of yard chemicals, tires,
appliances with Freon still in them, and
so on. The location for drop off will be
at the campground parking lot.
Parks And Lake
There is still no runoff of water even
with the recent rains. The lake elevation
on Oct. 13 was at 698.40. This is
down from last month’s report. Work
continues with physical and chemical
removal of unwanted growth of algae
and lake plants.
Roads And Bridge
There are new signs at the front exit
to help with the problem of people
leaving the store area or entering from
the highway inbound in the outbound
lanes. The lanes are now marked wrong
way along with the One-Way sign and
Do Not Enter sign that already existed.
Care should be taken when driving in
the outbound lane. Road rejuvenator
will be applied on various roads
starting Oct. 20. Please drive carefully
in the application zones. Traffic delays
will be held to a minimum.

reflect on the generous character of our residents or a milestone in their lives.
A Letter to the Editor should be less than
350 words in length and will be accepted if
it presents a thoughtful and constructive
view to an issue that may be controversial
within our community. It may be reviewed
and verified for factual accuracy by the appropriate authority. The factual clarification
will be published along with the letter. The
letter should be typed or in legible handwriting, signed by a verifiable resident, and will
be published unedited with misspellings indicated when necessary. If handwriting cannot be easily read, it cannot be used. The
CommuniQué will not be responsible for
misreading a handwritten word. A letter may
be refused publication if space is limited. If
several letters are received expressing the

thanked her committee for counting
the votes. She then introduced Marion

made the motion to approve the
minutes for August 18, 2014 meeting.

VI. Executive Session - Leslie
Tomich made the motion to enter into
an Executive Session at 6:05 p.m. and
was seconded by Craig Lamkin. All

motion to exit from Executive Session
and was seconded by Jay Titus. All
Possible legal actions were discussed
with attorney.
VII. Nominating Committee Gerald Smith, Chairman of the
Nominating Committee, submitted a
list of proposed names to be approved
for the Nominating Committee: Mike
Brindle; Ed Cooke; Donna Marfice;
Janice Richey; and Jerry Slater.
Jay Titus made the motion to accept
the entire slate and was seconded by
D Noble. All were in favor. Motion
carried.
VIII. Golf Committee - Gary O’Dell,
Chairman of the Golf Committee,
introduced Men’s Golf Association
President Tom Blackwell and
Secretary John Seefeldt, who asked
the board for permission to place
an ice machine in the cart barn; the
MGA will purchase the machine. The
ice machine will belong to the MGA
and they will be responsible for the
maintenance on the machine. Leslie
Tomich made the motion to allow the
MGA to place the ice machine in the
cart barn and was seconded by Craig
Lamkin. All were in favor. Motion
carried.
IX. 2014/2015 Budget - President
Stewart presented the 2014/2015
Budget to the Board and asked if there
was any discussion. Justin McMurry
asked about the Lodge kitchen
cleaning service being deleted and
expressed his desire to keep it in the
budget. Community Manager Randy
Schmaltz told him that, instead of
hiring an outside cleaning service,
they would use in-house personnel
to clean the kitchen. There was some
discussion about the Poker Facilitator
and if we needed to keep this item in
the budget. It was decided to keep it
in the budget. Bill Turner made the
motion to approve the Budget dated
9/14/14 as written and was seconded
by Craig Lamkin. All were in favor.
Motion carried.
X. Treasurer’s Report - Bill Turner
gave the August Treasurer’s Report.
He stated that because the Office
Manager had not had a budget to
work with, the Treasurer’s Report as
printed was misleading. All of the
income figures were predicated on the
5% increase in due, but the 2013/2014
Expense figures were used indicating
a budgeted surplus of $12,296. We
do not budget for surpluses and this
will be corrected after the 2014/2015
Budget has been approved.
He did point out that the Lodge liquor
and beer sales are almost $4,000 better
than budget and that food sales are
$7,500 better than budget. He pointed
out that some of the labor cost is lower
on account of fewer employees than
needed in the Central Garage. The
surplus that is showing in net revenue
is a little misleading on account of not
having a budget to work with.
XI. Managers’ Report - Randy
Schmaltz:
a. For the Golf Course, a Rough
Mower will be purchased from Austin
Turf & Tractor Co. for a price of
$36,065. This will be a John Deere
model 7700. The funds will come out
of the Asset Replacement Reserve
Fund. Also a Utility Cart will be
purchased from Luber Bro. Co. and
will be an Ez -Go Terrain 250G for
a cost of $7,999. This will also come
out of the Asset Replacement Reserve
Fund.
b. Vandalism Report - three young
men have been caught who were
damaging the golf course and stealing
from houses bordering the course.
They were not from Lake Kiowa.
They parked their car along the road
near the east gate and crossed over the
fence to enter the property. Security
tracked them down using pictures
captured by security cameras. Charges
were filed.
c. Abacus Update and Membership
Cards - Randy Schmaltz told the board
that we should be able to start getting
the new plastic cards within the next
two weeks. He said that you will be
able to go onto the website and fill out
the form inserting a photo and your
card will be processed.
d. Atkins Revised Sediment Proposal
- As of to date, we have spent a total
of $21,259 on studies for the sediment
removal in the lake. We have pending
$46,000 for other samplings of the
lake.
e. ARRF Road Renovation - For
2014 the road renovation program
will have $250,000 coming out of
Asset Replacement Reserve Fund.
The program will use a Rejuvenator
to improve the condition of the road.
Also, on the road that was treated
last year they will cover with a seal
for further protection. The sealer
requires 6 hours to dry and they will
do one side of the road at a time to
allow those living along the route to
get home. After all the roads that are
scheduled for this year are done, they
will re-stripe the roads.
XII. Additional
Business
Community Manager Randy Schmaltz
informed the Board that he had been
elected to the National Board of
Director’s for APCM, the Association
of Professional Community Managers.
President Stewart congratulated him
on this as the entire board agreed.
XIII. Questions from the Audience Marcy Titus asked if we have approved
the minutes for Special Board Meeting
on August 25, 2014. President Stewart
said that we would vote on them at the
next meeting.
Ed Tomlin, President of the Indian
Creek Volunteer Fire Dept, thanked
the Board for keeping the funding to
the fire department and said that it is
being put to good use.
XIV. Adjourn - Brent Reed made
the motion to adjourn at 7:48 p.m. and
was seconded by Jay Titus. All were
in favor. Motion carried.

FIRE CHIEF’S REPORT: The
August incident report reflected 26
calls. There were 2 structure fires, 18
EMS calls, 2 grass fires, 3 cancelled
en route calls and 1 MVA.
All of the E-draulic extrication tools
are in and in service.
The old tender was listed on the
auction block on Sept. 1, 2014 and
we have had one call from a road
construction company.
The cab on E801 is scheduled to be
painted.
Pump test is completed on E801.
Motion made by VP Hughes
to approve purchase of hose that
was voted on via email. Hose was
purchased to help our ISO rating.
Motion seconded by President Tomlin.

OTHER BUSINESS: August 2015
will be a start time for the election
process for two members
Sold 15 T-shirts during this past
weekend at Shabby Chic garage sale,
which was added to their sales.
Discussion was held in regards to
reimbursement for any EMT activity
cost.

1. Call to Order and Declaration of
Quorum: The meeting was called to
order by President Maxwell at 9:03
am. All Directors were present along
with General Manager Young and
Attorney James Wilson.
2. Review and approval of minutes:
August 13, 2014 regular board
meeting: Director White made a
motion to approve the August 13,
2014 minutes as presented. Director
Bergbower seconded the motion and
all were in favor.
3. Public Comment. (Speakers
limited to 5 minutes each): None
4. New Business:
(a) Discussion and possible action
concerning adoption of Resolution
No. 2014-004 approving an agreement
relating to the GTUA contract and
approving the issuance thereof and
the facilities to be constructed or
acquired by GTUA for the benefit of
the District: General Manger Young
discussed the highlights of Resolution
NO. 2014-004 that gives final
approval for GTUA to acquire and
the procedures to distribute monies
for the first project on our water
system. Vice President Thies made
a motion to approve Resolution No.
2014-004 as presented and Director
Bergbower seconded the motion and
all approved.
(b) Discussion and update on
the Debt Service schedule on the
Drinking Water State Revolving Fund
bonds being received through the
GTUA: Manager Young presented
the Directors with the debt service
schedule for payment of the bonds.
He said that the interest rate that we
received was 2.23% and that the bonds
could be refinanced after ten years.
(c) Discussion and possible action
on authorization for and RFP for
a Fixed Base meter system and all
appurtenances: After some discussion
and input from our attorney it was
decided that the fixed based meter
reading system expected cost would
require that we go out for bid. A
motion was made by Director White
to authorize the General Manager to
get bid documents completed and to
put the fixed based meter out for bid.
The motion was seconded by Director
Richey and all were in favor.
Old Business:
(a) Discussion and possible action on
purchase of trailer-mounted vacuum
excavator: After some discussion
on three quotes supplied by General
Manager Young, a motion was made
by Director White to purchase the
Vermeer Vactron model LP533DT.
The motion was seconded by Vice
President Thies and all were in favor.
(b) Discussion and update on
Waterline Replacement Program:
Manager Young discussed that the
funds from the bond proceeds were
expected the first week of October and
that he expected the bids to be put out
for the elevated tank soon after. He
also told the board that he was trying
to get an easement for the line that
connects the new elevated tank to the
distribution system lines.
