1. FAA Launches Second Artists in the Schools Series
The Fredericton Arts Alliance is sponsoring a new series of Art in the Schools projects. The FAA will pay artists $500 to work with a school
classroom for about 25 hours on a project to be coordinated with a classroom teacher. Priority will go to projects that involve the students
directly and that produce something of lasting value for the school, the class, or the students.
In the first series, which ran last spring, students created murals in three schools, a book of photography in a fourth, individual original
paintings in a fifth, and worked on a film/digital media project in a sixth. Artists can work in any media – a musician working with
children’s words to create a song, creating a dance to dramatize a history lesson, a visual artist working with a class to illustrate class
stories and create a book. The FAA will also cover all material costs involved in the creation, upon submission of receipts.
The program is administered through the Anglophone West School District, and its Fine Arts Coordinator, Andrea Penney. Application
forms and detailed criteria are available from her at [email protected]. The FAA encourages teachers in the area to make
proposals as well as artists to come up with ideas. We will work with teachers and artists to pair up proposals to make exciting things
happen. The guidelines are flexible enough to permit a wide range of suggestions to come forward.
The deadline for applications is November 28.

There will be a book launch for Paths of Faith in the Landscape of Science by George M. Strunz, Michael R. Miller, and Keith Helmuth;
published by Chapel Street Editions. This book will be launched at Westminster Books on Thursday, November 13, at 7pm. The authors will
be on hand at the launch. Paths of Faith brings together the personal stories of three New Brunswick Quakers who have long been
engaged in the dialogue between science and religion. Back to top.
3. Book Launch for Paul Craven’s Petty Justice Nov 13
On Thursday, November 13, from 5-6:30pm, in the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, located at 23 Dineen Drive, on the UNB
Fredericton campus, Paul Craven will be visiting Fredericton from York University to talk about his new book, Petty Justice: Low Law and
the Sessions System in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, 1785-1867 (UTP for Osgoode Society).
This free event is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by Atlantic Canada Studies Centre at UNB, Department of
History, Faculty of Law, and the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. Back to top.
4. Two Women Artists Exhibit Diverse Contemporary Views at the UNB Art Centre Nov 14
Join us on November 14 at 5pm at the UNB Art Centre in Memorial Hall for the opening of two special exhibits - Unstilled Egos: Selected
Works by Chantal Khoury, and Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series.
Chantal Khoury’s artistic practice focuses on figurative studies that probe the female identity, awkward beauty, and lost glamour. Her
compositions are inspired by images found in newspapers and magazines and often feature a “lonely protagonist.” Working in oil paint,
Ms. Khoury’s paintings are simplified and abstracted, featuring a Fauvist palette with intense colour contrasts and loose brushwork.
The paintings presented in the exhibition Unstilled Egos: Selected Works by Chantal Khoury are striking studies in contemporary
expressionism. Originally from Fredericton, now based in Montreal, Chantal Khoury received her BFA from Concordia University.
Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series, was born of a desire to bring attention to the distinct aboriginal culture of the Wabanaki tribes of North
America. Illustrating the story of Glooscap, the legendary founder and guide of the Wabanaki people, the exhibit features episodes in the
life of Glooscap and traces his adventures along the Wolastoq. Each painting is accompanied by text panels containing stories, poems and
historical notes describing the landmarks in each of the paintings.

These airbrushed acrylic paintings have the appearance of dreams, or recollections, referencing the stories the Wabanaki people have
always known but which were never written down. Each painting features a unique border design based on ancient petroglyphs, birch
bark baskets, clothing and wampum. Dozay was born and raised on the banks of the Saint John and Tobique Rivers. She attended the Nova
Scotia College of Art and Design.
This exhibit is presented in conjunction with the University of New Brunswick’s Mi’kmaq-Maliseet Institute’s Circle of
Understanding program designed to promote Mi’kmaq-Maliseet culture and history within the community. As part of this program
please join us on December 3, 2014 for the Circle of Understanding Program, Celebration of Wolastoqey and Mi’kmaq Culture.
Unstilled Egos: Selected Works by Chantal Khoury and Dozay’s Glooscap/Kluscap Series will be on view at the UNB Art Centre’s East and
West Galleries November 14 - December 19, 2014.
The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton. The galleries are open from
9am-4pm weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone is welcome. Back to top.
5. Nasty Shadows Theatre Company presents Rougher Magic: A Cubist Shakespeare by Robert Moore Nov 14
Is there anything older than the story of civilized folk trapped on a desert island? This particular telling of the age-old tale centres around a
loving yet strangely indifferent father whose powers are failing him, his fantastically nasty dogsbody of a spirit helper, his estranged
daughter and her several alter-egos, and last and (too often) least, a colonized son/brother (the island's only indigenous inhabitant) who
has yet to figure out the rules governing the master race's notions of "civil conversation."
Sound familiar? Rougher Magic: A Cubist Shakespeare is written through, as much as around, Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Using one of
the Bard’s final plays as the source for a stunningly original story, Rougher Magic is a funny and moving deconstruction of the various ways
in which The Tempest (that extended meditation on the inevitability of death) constructs race and gender.
Robert Moore’s Rougher Magic, directed by fellow Shadow co-founder, Scott Shannon, and performed by a tribe of veteran ‘Nasties,’
offers an unforgettable theatrical adventure for cast and audience alike.
This production will run in Fredericton and Saint John on four “Featured Fridays” at 7:30pm nightly. The dates and locations are:

festivals from Edmonton to Fredericton, recently receiving the first ever technical achievement award and best score for the 2014

11. NB Film Co-op’s Monday Night Film Series presents Fading Gigolo and Love Is Strange Nov 17-24
Fading Gigolo
November 17, 2014, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
John Turturro
USA, 2013
English
98 minutes
Principal Cast: John Turturro, Woody Allen, Vanessa Paradis, Liev Schreiber, Sharon Stone, Sofia Vergara
John Turturro (Margot at the Wedding, O Brother, Where Art Thou?) has played a number of strange parts in his acclaimed career, but in
his new film as writer, director and star, he tackles his most unlikely role yet: a man who decides to enter the gigolo game more than a
little late in life, with the aid of an equally novice pimp played by none other than Woody Allen. Accept this brilliantly absurd premise and
you’re in for a hilarious ride.
ARTSnews November 13, 2014
Volume 16, Issue 44
5
Fioravante (Turturro) is a florist whose friend Murray (Allen) is facing insolvency with the imminent closure of his small bookshop.
Searching for a way to save the business, the friends hit upon the idea that, in a New York full of wealthy older women with active libidos,
surely a greying Don Juan could make a few bucks. And so, adopting the names “Virgil Howard” and “Dan Bongo,” the duo embarks upon
the world’s oldest profession.
Turturro sets up this crazy idea in quick, bold strokes, then goes on to explore just what it would mean to be a man-for-hire well past his
prime. His brilliantly leftfield comic sensibility is given even greater punch by a marvellous supporting cast, including Sharon Stone (Bobby)
and Sofia Vergara (television’s Modern Family) as eager clients, and Vanessa Paradis (Café de Flore) as a lonely and sheltered orthodox
Jewish widow whose tentative romance with Fioravante plays out under the watchful eye of Dovi (Liev Schreiber, The Reluctant
Fundamentalist), a vigilant member of the neighbourhood’s Jewish police.
In the midst of Allen’s remarkable resurgence behind the camera, it’s a thrill to watch him work onscreen with someone else’s material.
His wit and distinctive comic rhythms are in fine form here, and Turturro knows how to use the legend to best effect. With Fading Gigolo,
Allen adds yet another indelible role to his catalogue of New York stories.
Love Is Strange
November 24, 2014, 7:30pm at Tilley Hall, UNB Campus
Ira Sachs
USA/France, 2014
English
98 minutes
Principal Cast: Marisa Tomei, John Lithgow, Alfred Molina
Screened to critical acclaim at Sundance, Berlin and Tribeca, the poignant sixth feature by celebrated writer-director Ira Sachs (Keep the
Lights On, Married Life) is a captivating modern-day love story about a couple whose decades-long relationship is upset by a drastic and
unexpected change in their lives.
Painter Ben (John Lithgow, Dreamgirls, Kinsey) and Catholic school choir director George (Alfred Molina, The Tempest, An Education) have
been partners for nearly four decades. On the heels of the new US same-sex marriage laws, the couple finally takes their vows in front of
their closest friends and family. However, when news of their nuptials reaches the school administrators, George is let go from the
teaching post he’s held for years. Without George’s steady income to help them cope with the high cost of living in Manhattan, the pair
has to uproot their lives and impose themselves on the busy households of their loved ones.
Performances are key in intimate dramas such as this, and Lithgow and Molina are note-perfect in their roles, effortlessly suggesting Ben
and George’s long history together in every casual action and interaction, while Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei (The Wrestler,
Crazy, Stupid, Love) leads an outstanding supporting cast with a delicate, lived-in performance. Ultimately, however, the film is Sachs’
triumph: a thoughtful, heartbreaking, and beautifully realized ode to love, family, and both the struggles and rewards of age.
This term, 12 limited release, independent, foreign, and Canadian films will be shown. The film series is open to everyone. Regular
admission is $7; Member’s admission is $4. January-April Memberships are $20 (regular), and $12 (Students/Seniors (65 years and

15. Theatre St. Thomas presents William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew Nov 19-22
In a world where daughters and sons are exchanged for family fortunes, Shakespeare’s sharp comedy The Taming of the Shrew finds
Lucentio concocting a plot with Tranio to win the love of “the fair Bianca” over rivals Hortensio and Gremio. But when the gallant
Petruchio comes to town “to wive it wealthily” he meets his match, Kate, the eldest daughter of the money-hungry Baptista Minola in the
Bard’s play about true love and “gold’s effect.”
“It’s been many years since The Taming of the Shrew played in Fredericton, owing at least in part to its provocative plot” says the play’s
director and TST Faculty Advisor Robin C. Whittaker, who has also written an epilogue to frame the play. “But this is one of Shakespeare’s
best comedies, the one in which he allows his audiences to believe what they wish: Do we conclude, like the drunkard Sly, that the play
teaches us how a ‘shrew’ may be ‘tamed’? Or is the play about learning mutual empowerment and calling into question the lengths of
parental authority?”
Theatre St. Thomas’s The Taming of the Shrew runs November 19-22 at 7:30pm (plus a Saturday matinée at 2pm) in the Black Box Theatre
at St. Thomas University. Tickets are sold at the door, and are $10 general, $5 students and seniors. Non-perishable food donations for the

Workshops | Classes | Art Camps
1. Painting with Wax Encaustic Workshop Nov 15
Encaustic is an ancient painting medium that uses molten beeswax as a binder with pigment. It is sort of like painting with melted crayons!
When it’s hot, it’s wet, and when cool it’s dry, and you can do all kinds of interesting things with it. Then use a heat gun to work on the
next phase. Paint, incise, fill, scrape, melt, smudge, blend, even work with stencils. There’s no end to the possibilities for getting amazing
effects with this paint!
This workshop takes place on Saturday, November 15, from 1-5pm in Memorial Hall, Room #26. For more information:
