a presentation and demonstration called The Incredible
Art of Henna. Being introduced to this unique art form
may inspire you to take your own art to new places as
yet unknown. I think each artist that visits us for a
program at ALOG teaches me a little more about myself
as an artist.
Many volunteer opportunities remain before us. Dorothy
Piel has been our ALOG Volunteer Coordinator. She
deserves a standing ovation for all that she has done for
us for so long! Her heart has always been in it and it
showed. ALOG is now searching for a Volunteer
Coordinator to sit on the Board of Directors and sign up
the volunteers for Black Rock receptions and Black Rock
gallery show hangings as of December 31, 2014 when
Dorothy will move on to other things. If you volunteered for
the ALOG WinterGlow reception or gallery hanging at our
art show, then you are already experienced. Even if you
are inexperienced, I welcome any ALOG member who is
able to volunteer to fill this important position. It is a great
way to be creative and to get to know many of your fellow
ALOG members better. If you are interested in the position
vacancy, contact me or any Board member to ask
questions you may have. Our contact information is on the

Upcoming November ALOG Meeting—
In the Afterglow of WinterGlow
Fall is inviting us to pick fresh apples, pick up pumpkins,
enjoy the yellows, purples and oranges of mums sitting
around on our neighbors doorways and porches. It calls
for us to slow down our pace and enjoy a sip of apple
cider or hot spiced tea on a crisp Autumn morning. It is a
time of year that yells at me to soak it all in before the
cold weather sets in. I am excited about the great job
that our members have done to make the ALOG
WinterGlow Art Show from Nov. 5-9, 2014 a stellar
opportunity for our exhibiting artists and a wonderful art
experience for residents of our area. Now that the hectic
pace of preparations comes to a close it is time to savor
the moments! Change is sometimes hard, but we made it
through the changes together that came with the
preparations in a fashion to be proud of! Thank you to all
participating artists and volunteers for a job well done!

ALOG members and guests, don’t miss our postWinterGlow meeting on Wednesday, Nov 12 (the 2nd
Wednesday of the month), starting at 7:15pm, in the
Main Gallery at BlackRock. We’re in for a very special
treat as renowned henna artist Bhavna Naik shares her
wonderful art form and creative insights with us. “Henna
as an art is very therapeutic for the giver and receiver,”
says Bhavna. She will offer a powerpoint presentation to
show her art, and give a demonstration of her inspired
work, using member volunteers as her “canvas.” This will
be a very special opportunity to observe the creation of —
and perhaps even take home an original piece of — a
unique and memorable work of art.
We have many nice programs lined up to share with you
in the coming months. Our next monthly meeting will be

Bhavna grew up in Mumbai, India, where she was a
creative kid making greeting cards, embroidery, stained
glass, and henna designs. Once in the US, she was very
busy working in the healthcare field, as a caterer of Indian
cuisine, and in sales of Indian handicrafts. Then, she
began to focus more on what made her truly happy – her
henna art. “Never did I imagine that my hobbies would
drive me to reach my goals and dreams. So always
remember to add a bit of creativity to your world…you will
see your soul smile…”
continued to do this and to expand on it for the benefit of
all of us. In addition, Bill also got interested members
attending plein air 'paint outs' in many lovely area venues.
He is a very key member of our ALOG communication
team and so the Board decided it was long past due to
award him a Lifetime Membership in ALOG. Thank you,
Bill for all you do for us.

Congratulations to Bhavna, too, as she has been chosen
once again to be one of the finalists for this year’s Mehndi
Maharani Contest which accepts hundreds of applications
from around the world.

Bill Mapes Is ALOG’s Newest Lifetime
Member

Can furniture be fine art? It surely can if the maker was
George Nakashima.
In the sixties, Fran and Kathy Asbeck saw a Conoid
Bench by Nakashima in a crafts museum in NYC. They
loved it, wished they could have one. Nakashima, who
would raise woodworking to the level of high art, was just
beginning to become known, and by the time of his death
had become the acknowledged dean of American
woodworkers.
A few years after the NYC show, the Asbecks heard that
Full Circle Gallery in Alexandria was having a showing of
Nakashima’s work. They attended, came home with an
affordably priced Minguren Table.
Bill Mapes has been a member of ALOG since 2005. He
has taken an active part in the activities of this group from
the very beginning. When he became President some
years ago, he started expanding knowledge of the things
that artist members were doing by sending out notices of
art-related events. While that started 'small', these notices
have grown to cover more and more valuable knowledge
of art and art events in our area, to say nothing of the art
activities of our ALOG members. It is a hugely valuable
service and after Bill was no longer President, he
The following year, Nakashima came back to Full Circle
and this time brought a Conoid Bench with him. They
snapped it up on the spot. Nakashima was still affordable,
but after he died in 1990, the valuation of his work
increased by th8rty- to eighty-fold.
Fran, now alone and at the age of divestiture, not
confident his estate would do justice to his very few
treasures, started looking for good homes for them. He’d
made the acquaintance of Dr. Jutta Page, the curator of

glass and decorative arts at the Toledo Museum of Art,
and offered the bench to TMA. It was eagerly accepted,
and is now displayed, as pictured, in the museum’s Glass
Pavilion.
The Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County
(AHCMC) is pleased to announce the launch of Round Up
for the Visual Arts!™, a new charitable initiative created in
partnership with Plaza Artist Materials. Round Up for the
Visual Arts! is a cause marketing and fundraising
campaign raising community support for Montgomery
County’s visual arts community through point-of-sales
transactions. Plaza's three Montgomery County locations
in Silver Spring, Rockville, and Bethesda will pilot this
initiative throughout the month of October. The launch of
Round Up for the Visual Arts! kicks-off local celebrations
of National Arts and Humanities Month, recognized across
the country during the month of October.
Being a glass artisan himself, Fran is pleased that the
bench he treasured now shares space with TMA’s
extensive collection of glass art and that it will be enjoyed
by many museum visitors.
The F/1.4 Photography Team Featured at
the Arts Barn

The F/1.4 Photography Team of Jarre Donnnelly, Craig
Higgins, Timothy Lynch and Marge Wasson are at the Arts
Barn, the Kentlands with their exhibit "FORTY EIGHT", a
12 month long project addressing twelve different themes,
one for each month. This collaborative group of
photographers will have 48 dynamic pieces on exhibit at
the "Barn" from October 3 to November 23rd. Thom
Germer has been invited to join the Show and is exhibiting
his unique and beautiful photography "cubes" at the Barn
as well.
Upcoming Art Opportunities

American Watercolor Society
The American Watercolor Society is having its 148th
Annual International Exhibition. The entry deadline is
November 15th and the entry fee varies from $15-$60.
The jurors for selection are Jim McFarlane, Chair,
Kathleen Conover, Leslie Frontz, Z.L. Feng and William
Rogers. The exhibit itself takes place April 6-25, 2015 as
part of a traveling exhibit.
The opening reception will be Tuesday, October 21st at
the Barn from 7-8:30 PM. ALOG members and friends
are cordially invited to attend.

Holiday Design Competition in December again. The
contest takes place between December 3-28. No further

Maryland Sheep and Wool Cover Art Competition
Every year the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival has a

competition to design the catalog cover for the festival.
Submission deadline is for Nov 1, 2014 and the winning
piece would be in the 2015 festival and catalogs that are
mailed out. No further information about the choosing
panel at this time.
Washington ArtWorks
The Washington ArtWorks is calling artists to showcase
their work at WAW in Rockville. There is a $50 entry fee
and the dates are Nov 12-Jan 13th, Jan 14-Mar 17th, Mar
18-May12th and May 13-July 14th.

Maryland Federation of Art: Stormy Weather
The MFA is inviting artists to submit 2-D art that depicts
the sights, sounds, colors and impacts of weather. The
submission deadline is Oct. 29, 2014 and will exhibit in
Annapolis from Jan 15-March 15, 2015. It will be juried by
Emily Gracey, meteorologist and reporter for Fox 45,
Barry Shauck, Assistant Professor at Boston University.

Montgomery College: Call for Proposals
The Department of Visual Arts and Design are accepting
proposals for exhibition space at Montgomery College.
The deadline for proposals is April 15, 2015 for the
themed exhibits. The proposals will be reviewed by an
exhibition committee, members are currently not known.
