HOOF WALL SEPERATION DISEASE
Over the past 15 years there has
been an increasing awareness
worldwide of a problem with the
hoof structure in a subset of our
beloved Connemara ponies.
Hoof Wall Separation Disease is an
autosomal recessive genetic
disorder of the hoof wall. All four
feet will be affected. It should not
be confused with White Line
Disease (WLD)
The condition has been identified in all countries where Connemara ponies are bred, in both
local and imported stock - not 'one' country nor one bloodline.
If a pony has inherited this condition, it will be born
with it and in severe cases damage can be seen in
foals as young as 2 -3 weeks of age. HWSD is not an
acquired condition.
We are unsure why, but there is consensus that
there are degrees of severity with this condition;
some can be managed and some of these ponies
need to be euthanized on humane grounds.
Environment and nutrition may be contributing
factors, but are not the cause.
The cause is a genetic mutation which causes the hoof wall to grow in a defective manner.
Splits occur within the layers of the hoof wall and these layers break away when they come
in contact with the ground.
The genetic research was conducted by the
Bannasch Laboratory (UC Davis). The scientists
from Bannasch discovered the mutation and have
developed the screening test.
The Patterns of Inheritance in HWSD follow basic Mendelian principles.
Carrier parents donate either a normal copy of the gene or a mutated version to each of
their foals. Thus every mating of a carrier parent to a normal parent has a 50% chance
that the foal will be free of the mutation and a 50% chance it will be a carrier. Carrier
ponies are completely normal and will not be affected themselves.
When two carrier parents are mated, the chance of producing a HWSD foal is 1:4. When
an affected HWSD parent produces a foal with a normal parent, 100% of the offspring will
be of carrier status.
By genetic testing all breeding stock for the HWSD mutation, it will be possible to avoid
matings which will have the potential to produce HWSD affected foals.
2
It is extremely important to breed with carrier ponies to ensure the gene pool and
genetic diversity in the breed is not further reduced.
The HWSD test is conducted using
hair roots sampled from the mane
or tail; this is then sent for testing
by UC Davis Veterinary Genetics
Laboratory. www.vgl.ucdavis.edu
Thankyou to the Connemara Pony
Research Group for this information.
http://connemara-pony.blogpost.com
Dr. Robert Eustace of the Laminitis Trust (UK), originally described the condition as
“coconut-matting hooves” as the borders of the hoof wall appears rough and frayed like the
edges of coconut matts.
HWSD sadly, does not respond to
treatment whether topical hoof
treatments or feed supplements which
are used to promote healthy hoof
growth.
The hooves do not hold traditional shoes
well, as the hoof wall fractures around the
nail sites. The older type of adhesives
used for 'glue on shoes' appear to
exacerbate the breakdown of the hoof
wall. The new generation adhesives
appear to perform better in this regard.

The WA Connemara Action Group has not
conducted any activities over the last 12 months.
The group chose to move its annual show from
May to August as there were few breed shows at
this time of year. After the CPBSA decided to
have the AGM in Perth it was agreed the show
would be held on Sunday 21 September
following the AGM on 20 September.
The WACAG wishes to thank members of the

STRICKLAND PARK JO‟S REBEL – JO HEARD TROPHY NOMINATION
My name is Melissa Smith and I am a coowner of the sire Strickland Park Jo‟s
Rebel, with Vi Gunn.
I started riding Jo when he was freshly
broken in, and this is when I learnt to
ride.
Jo and I have had many lessons not just
for the show ring but for dressage and
jumping as well. Jo is a very versatile
pony, and although he is only 13.1 hands
in stature, he could easily jump a grade 1
cross country course. But he loved show
jumping, as he is a nippy pony, so he
loved the tight courses. But dressage is
where he excelled, and competed at
various levels. His greatest
accomplishment was winning preliminary
at the EFA National Pony Dressage, where
this was his first big competition.
Jo has proved himself in many disciplines
with a lot of different riders, ranging from
10 years old to adults. He has always
been around small kids, and loves all the
attention they give him. Jo has also been
used as a lead pony for Vi‟s grand kids.
Where ever he goes he gets lots of
compliments about his looks, movement,
ability, and especially his temperament.
As I have been the main rider of Jo, he
has taught me so much. Although we
have had our ups and downs, I would
never change a thing. Jo is an awesome
pony and I always knew he would look
after me, as I would him. He has made
me the rider I am today.
Jo has been a teacher, a student, and a
fierce competitor in the show ring,
dressage, and jumping. Most importantly
he has given me a sense of great
satisfaction, and a friend for life. This is
why I think Jo is a good ambassador for
the Connemara breed.
Now he is retired due to injury, Jo has
produced lovely stock. I am now
embarking on my next adventure, riding a
lovely black gelding that is sired by Jo.

VICTORIAN NEWS
The Spring season in Victoria has resulted
in rich feed with many ponies being locked
up to trim their waistlines. It has also
seen some of our members suffering from
illnesses and operations and we hope they
are well and truly on the mend.
The show season has commenced and the
run of shows include Agricultural shows,
the APSB Stud Show and the Melbourne
Summer Royal. Whilst Connemara breed
classes are not offered at all shows we
encourage members to attend where
possible or support those members out
and about with their ponies. Please send
in any results and/or photos for the
December E-Bulletin.
The main forthcoming event in Victoria is
Equitana at the Melbourne Showgrounds
in November being organized by the
Central Victorian Action Group. Diane
Brown has a report on the CVAG and
CPBSA arrangements in this E-Bulletin.
We are looking forward to seeing many
CPBSA members attending this event.
An inspection day was held recently in
central Victoria with four ponies being
inspected. For those keen to have their
pony or ponies inspected, please read the
expression of interest item in this EBulletin.
INSPECTIONS
Expressions of interest are sought from
Victorian CPBSA members who will be
seeking inspections of their ponies in the
future. If there is sufficient response,
plans will be made to organise an
inspection date in late Autumn. Members
will have to be prepared to travel to a
central venue. At this stage there are no
other plans for any future inspection plans
until Spring 2015, again at a central
venue.
If you are requesting an inspection, please
forward details of your name, your
location and information regarding the
pony/ ponies to both the secretary, Vicki
Plummer and the Victorian Sate
representative, Ingrid Rowe by end of
November 2014.Contact details are on
the committee members‟ page of the EBulletin.

ITEMS FROM COMMITTEE MEETING:
Performance Register – all states represented; may have to look at cost in
time will review annually, good promotion. Tweaking of some scores.
Regulations – changes with the sub-committee Gary, Sue and Gill.
branding/microchip;
Constitution: Catherine talked on the changes that effected; voting is now
done at an AGM and elections have to be done annually; other sections now
are placed in by-laws;
ICCPS Report – change in exec members; more members from countries,
Madeline Beckman, Karen Holloway; less Irish representation; database has
issues so now a separate data base is to be put in place for the CPBS;
CPBS is in financial strife and looks like being taken over by the horse board;
worldwide filly vet form has been developed – need input from other
countries; (skin problem not sweet itch); WA have to brand ponies and so
other states are now going to look at what the law is in their state; our society
wants support and clarification of the description and type etc of the
Connemara pony; new education DVD for inspectors etc; NZ DNA checks by
people that are not members so be aware of this if buying from NZ they may
not be registered properly;
Inspection Review: feed back from members and Inspectors that forms were
complicated so we have looked at going back to the Irish form and simplify
the process; we have added a few areas – hooves; we have got away from
percentage; now the mark is out of 10 and a notation is on the bottom of the
form stating how the scoring works and what it means at the end of the
Inspection; new triplicate book to be printed – top copy for Registrar, middle
one for the owner, bottom one to stay in the booklet; Inspectors signature will
only be on the top copy; focusing on areas in Inspection to make it a more
consistent procedure. State Rep will be the person who handles all the
paperwork after the Inspection is finalised.
Strategic Plan: we are looking at this and getting all thoughts back to
Committee four weeks from today.
7
Data-base: looking into updating the software for the stud book – this is a live
system; powerful in the administration area also; plus ability to report on lots
of areas for analysis; annual subscription; owned by Society, just renting the
service from them; we have control how it is used and who uses it; $2,000$3,000 is the estimated cost; user friendly.
3
PRESIDENT'S REPORT: read and will be printed in e-bulletin.
4
TREASURER'S REPORT: as tabled. Moved Bob Plummer/Phillip Rowe – this
will be printed in e-bulletin.
5
ITEMS RAISED BY MEMBERS PRIOR TO OR INTRODUCED AT MEETING:
a) Constitution
The amended constitution which had been circulated to all members and
agreed to by the majority of members by postal voting was unacceptable to
Consumer Affairs Victoria. The alternatives are to rewrite the Society‟s
Constitution to bring it into line with the Model Rules laid down by CAV or to
adopt the Model Rules as the Society‟s Constitution.
The meeting unanimously agreed to the following motion.
“THE CONNEMARA PONY BREEDERS‟ SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA INCORPORATED
HEREBY ADOPTS THE CONSUMER AFFAIRS VICTORIA MODEL RULES FOR AN
INCORPORATED ASSOCIATION”
and further
“THE CONNEMARA PONY BREEDERS‟ SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA INCORPORATED
HEREBY ADOPTS BY-LAWS 1 -13 AS SET OUT IN THE ACCOMPANYING PAPER”
b) Hoof Wall Separation Disease – Peer Review should be published in
October, this is a recessive gene; test is available but has not been approved
yet by CPBS; information will be put out to members with diagram.
6
GENERAL BUSINESS:

CPBSA PRESIDENT‟S REPORT - 20th Sep 2014, Upper Swan, Perth, WA
I would like to thank the CPBSA
Committee; Vice President Catherine
McTaggart, Secretary Vicki Plummer, Gill
Beaton, Gary Johnston, Sue Dodds, Diane
Brown, Janene Leslie, Brooke Allan,
Victoria Strickland , Gill Beaton, Ingrid
Rowe, Jayne Ramaker & Jo Longman .
Thank-you to Jo & Victoria for hosting and
assisting with the AGM being held here in
Perth WA. Thankyou to all committee for
attending and travelling to Perth.
This year has been the CPBSA‟s 40 year
anniversary. We have supported the
publication of a 40 year anniversary
journal of which will be available for
purchase very soon. It was a challenge to
all involved with limited financial budget,
but again members and breeders were
able to supply lots of information and
purchase advertising space to enable the
publication of the journal. Many thanks to
all who assisted , but special mention of
thanks to Zita Denholm of whom managed
the whole project and Vicki Plummer and
Ingrid Rowe who also spent many hours
assisting. I am sure it will be a showcase
of our 40years of the Connemara Pony in
Australia, and a wonderful keepsake for
all.
I would like to acknowledge another
Australian Connemara Pony publication
which was made available to the Irish
Connemara Pony community. In August
Australian Tearna Goldstein‟s book A
Dusty Grey Pony was made available to
Pat Lyne‟s Station House Connemara Pony
Museum. The publication is a valuable
contribution to our Connemara Pony
history in Australia, and a thoroughly
great read.
Equitana in Sydney was an event that was
another successful activity by Committee
and members, in attending and promoting
the Connemara Pony at this huge Equine
Event. The event had a strong team from
the NSW Connemara Pony owners and
breeders with Brooke Allan leading the
group. Brooke has also volunteered advice
to the Victorian group who are also
organising a Connemara Pony activity at
this years‟ Equitana to be held in
November, in Melbourne Victoria .
In the last 12 months a major financial
contribution has been to our Performance
Register in publishing the results in the
National publication Horse Deals. This is
one activity of our society that we can all
be proud of. I hope we can work to
ongoing fundraising to maintain the
Register. I feel this register is already
proving a financial benefit to our
members, with reports of increased sales
and better prices of performance ponies,
and more ponies visibly in all states out
competing. The inclusion of part-breds in
the Performance Register competition has
also proven to be beneficial for promotion
of the breed, with wins at state Eventing
level in Tasmania, New South Wales and
Queensland. We again need to review
sustainability and costs of the register on
an ongoing basis. Sponsorship has been
slow, but is occurring for our Events and
Committee, as ever, looks forward to
receiving member feedback to assist us in
the annual review of the register. I wish
to thank the Performance registrar
Catherine McTaggart, Vicki Plummer our
Society secretary and state reps for in the
co-ordination
of
information
and
assistance to our members. I feel the
register
allows
our ponies
to be
recognised by our society for their
performance in breed specific and open
company, and acknowledging the partbred
inclusion,
also
promotes
the
performance ability of the Connemara
Pony.
I attended the Aonoch St Patrick‟s Day
weekend this year, and was delighted to
see the CSU once again hosting
Connemara Ponies. I would like to thank
Zita Denholm for her energy and vision in
driving the event in it‟s second year , and

Each Year now we are requested to report
Classification statistics to the ICCPS.
Some statistics are as follows statistics

The ICCPS delegates discussed at length
the on line studbook/database, which, was
reported to us is in great need of
updating. A possible solution to this would
be to use the same Software programme
the Horse Board of Ireland uses and
include all International countries

problem that is occurring now with
Imported and Exported ponies owners not
being able to trace full pedigrees.

Australia was 5th highest with 31

France 535, GB-122, Sweden 53 .
Our Inspection Process has been reviewed
since the last AGM, and committee have
formulated a new inspection sheet, which
I believe is simpler for owners to
understand. The form will also be in a
triplicate book which will allow the
integrity of the documentation process to
be improved. The new forms will be
implemented when the final stage of
approval has been received by committee
in the very near future.
Committee has provided this year new
ideas from, which will I feel if supported
and implemented will enable our society
to move into the future with structure,
goals and clarity. A more comprehensive
new Strategic Plan will allow management
of CPBSA business, greater membership
involvement and increase committee
members roles and involvement.
I am happy to report that the ICCPS
meeting in August this year in Clifden,
Ireland has also taken on a more proactive role in the management of the
Connemara Pony Herd on a worldwide
level. Madeline Beckmen from Sweden is
the new President and I as the Vice
President, Executive committee members
being France, England & Ireland. Business
arising from the meeting that is already
being worked on is a Veterinary
Inspection form for all countries, to enable
I attended Dr Carrie Finno‟s session in
Clifden on Hoof Wall Separation Disease.
Our Societies members have been aware
of and some involved with the study and
it‟s results since it‟s inception. HWSD is
also now being put on agenda‟s of
Connemara Pony Societies, the
ICCPS
meeting also discussed the availability of
the test for Breeders .
I was also informed last month the CPBS
has been in financial difficulty and its
future is at this time uncertain. I was able
to attend a meeting with the Irish
Agriculture Minister on Clifden Show day
as the Vice President of the ICCPS and
Australian President on the issue of the
future of the CPBS. Minister Coveney
stated he wanted to support the
Connemara Pony as much as possible and
would look into assisting the CPBS. There
will be an outcome by the end of October
this year on this issue and one we would
all hope will be positive.
We are a small society and volunteering is
both personal and financial in some cases
and as President I am very proud of the
increased level of people‟s time and effort
in the promotion of our society of the last
12 months.
I would like to make special thanks to Mr
Bob Plummer our Secretary‟s husband for
his ongoing unpaid support to Vicki, and
general support to all who contact their
home/office. I would like to acknowledge
10
the extra unpaid time that Vicki herself
puts into her role, as our society has
taken on these extra ventures in the last
12 months. Thank you to you both.
The future of the Connemara Pony in
Australia I believe will be well served by
the current society committee, future
plans include promotion, sponsorship,
strategic planning, security and support of
breed standards.

POWDERBARK MCWHINNEY – JO HEARD TROPHY NOMINATION
My beautiful 12 year old has always loved
horses! It was after a big scare and fall we
decided it was best to sell on our beautiful
thoroughbred! In February of this year on
facebook, of all places, we found
“Whinney: :)
It seems Whinney chose Kaytlin she never
left her side !
The day we picked her up on trial we took
her to Pinjarra breed show they came
home with reserve champion mare! We
made sure she was going to be perfect for
Kaytlin!
Kaytlin, who was always scared to jump
or canter, with Whinney‟s help and
kindness does it all including cross country
and pony club!
Whinney is Kaytlin‟s forever pony ! Wish
us luck at Kaytlins first time at this years‟
Perth Royal Show……..
Thank you
Natasha Thornton
Kaytlin Hollands has been riding
Powderbark McWhinney since February
this year. McWhinney had not been
competing for a while and since having
her Kaytlin has taken her out to hack
shows and breed shows and had some
success in the ring. She has also taken
her to some showjumping days and an
eventing training day. She rides her
regularly training her and cares for her
very well, they have built a strong bond
over the year. It is great to see a new
pair having success.
Kind regards
Lisa Edmonds-Coad
I wish to nominate Kaitlyn Hollands and her
Connemara mare Powderbark McWhinney
for the Jo Heard Memorial trophy
competition.
I have seen at tremendous amount of
improvement from this duo over the past few
months and believe they have an exciting
future ahead of them in the show ring.
Kaitlyn and 'Whinney' have a beautiful bond
that allows them to progress in their pursuits
more rapidly than they could have
anticipated; and it is lovely to hear how
excited Kaitlyn is to be competing at her first
Perth Royal Show with 'Whinney' this year.

Central Victorian Action Group (CVAG) Report 2014
Over this last year CVAG has suffered
from a loss of active members. A joint
CVAG/BRAG meeting was held in May
and an interim committee was created.
This consists of Diane Brown as
President/Treasurer and Annette Condie
as Secretary.
The AGM for the Action Group is to be
held at Waubra on October 26th and
committee will be formally elected then.
The new committee sees the future of
CVAG as a place to hold Education
sessions and riding clinics as well as other
activities.
CVAG has been managing the promotion
of the pony at Equitana in Melbourne,
November 2014 and all preparations are
well underway and up to date. (See
separate Equitana report)
We are hopeful that with promotion and
communication CVAG will continue to
provide Central Victorian members with
a place to enjoy their Connemara ponies.
