In addition to using our own lives as the primary textbook, we will be reading and discussing Finding God Ȃ Selected Responses, by Rifat Sonsino and Daniel Syme (UAHC Press, 2nd edition, 2002). Shabbat Around the Dinner Table Friday, November 7 at 7:00 pm (Jewish Center of Oak Hills) Dinner will include roasted chicken dish or vegetarian (Falafel) in a wrap, Kasha Varnishkes, and green beans almondine. Please indicate your choice of either chicken or vegetarian when responding. As a nosh there will be mini potato pancakes; bread, Cole Slaw and Pickles. $18.00 per person MUST RSVP BY TEMPLE SHOLOM OFFICE Ȃ Wednesday, November 5, 12:00 Noon! 2 FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, We hope that you had a wonderful and inspirational Holy Day period and that you are looking forward to this New Year as much as I am. There are many exciting activities and programs planned for the coming year. If you have driven past our New Temple site you will see changes that were made to set up the site for a resumption of building. We have opened up the sidewalk and removed the traffic barriers so that the Department of Buildings will remove our building restriction because we will no longer require a DOT permit for the closed sidewalks. Within the next few weeks we will receive our building department approval, receive finalized proposals from two contractors, select one, and resume construction. We are looking to hold a congregational meeting later this year to present a comprehensive plan for moving forward as a community. A critical component of this plan is expanding membership involvement in our community. I have been very encouraged by several members who have already volunteered their time and talent to help us move forward in the upcoming year. Thank you for stepping up, you will be hearing from me shortly. We are also getting ready to launch Temple Sholom's new Website which will be unveiled within the coming months. This new look will provide a much easier and more rapid format for communicating news to our community. With this newsletter, we have scaled back the newsletter to 8 pages to begin transitioning content to the new website. As you can see with this issue, all of the basic and important components of the newsletter have not changed. How we deliver the newsletter to you will not change. Those who have requested paper copies will continue to get them and those who have requested email only delivery will still only get an email copy. We would like to have your feedback on this new 8-­‐page newsletter format. Please let us know if you are missing something in this edition that you have normally seen in the past. As we journey through the year 5775, I am reminded of the great line spoken by the actor Mandy Potemkin in the film, Wish I Were Here that we will continue to move in Dz–Š‡‘Ž› direction that God gave us Ȃ ‘”™ƒ”†dzǤ Shalom, Paul 3 SOCIAL ACTION Tzedakah 5775 Ȃ Update An additional $104 was collected in our Tzedakah box, which will allow the Queens Jewish Community Council Meals-­‐OnǦWheels Program, to provide 20 kosher hot meals to persons who are home bound. Your Tzedakah contributions have provided a total of 220 meals during 5774. This is 110% of our 5774 stretch goal. Thank you for providing these hot kosher meals to keep our neighbors from going hungry -­‐ year round. Special thanks to Jack Zaffos who oversaw all of the Tzedakah collections throughout the year. Our thanks to everyone who participated in the High Holiday food drive! We totaled 319 pounds of food for the needy for, The Harry Chapin Food Bank, which is part of Long Island Cares. SISTERHOOD NEWS & VIEWS SISTERHOOD MITZVAH PROJECT Sisterhood has received a requestǥ New Eyes for the Needy from the activities director at the Glen Oaks Nursing Home at 260th Street and Union Turnpike. They can use lap robes, approximately, ͵ͲdzšʹͶdzˆ‘”–Š‡‹”’ƒ–‹‡–•Ǥ Please bring in old eyeglasses. Sisterhood is continuing to send them on to needy people through New Eyes for the Needy. In addition, if you have small shampoos, lotions, shower caps, mouthwash that you get from hotels, bring those in as well to the Temple Sholom office. Gerty will take these items to the Ronald McDonald House for children and their families. We are asking anyone who would like to join this Mitzvah program and who can knit or crochet to contact Gerty Wolf at: 718-­‐347-­‐8171. ‡ǯ˜‡”‡…‡‹˜‡ donations of wool for this Sisterhood project!
