SEASON 2014-15 NUMBER 5 FRIDAY 14 NOVEMBER UP THE HILL Winchmore Hill Sports Club The weekly news from Winchmore Hill FC (if I get match reports), plus Hockey News, Table Tennis news and Club News SAL Roundup - Saturday 8 November Special points of interest: Upcoming events - back page The Spaghetti Quiz - p18 Christmas Supper - p31 he AFA Senior Cup caused a minimum of league matches last weekend. There were no matches in Division One and two matches each in Division Two and Three. Alexandra Park were hosts to EBOG with the home side winning a close game 3 - 2 to move up to fourth place in the table, six points behind league leaders NUFC Oilers. EBOG find themselves just outside the drop-zone. In the other game, BB Eagles drew with Actonians Association. Actonians are in second place, four points adrift of Oilers who have a game in hand. Eagles are mid-table. In Division Three, Old Esthameians move up to second after beating Old Blues 1 - 0. and Old Westminster Citz lost at home to Ibis 1 0 in a mid-table clash. In the AFA Senior Cup there were some top matches. Alleyn Old Boys lost 0 - 1 to Polytechnic at Dulwich and Winchmore Hill were well beaten at The Paulin by Nottsborough 4 - 1. Old Garchonians win a tight game 3 - 2 at Bealonians and Third Division Broomfield got the result of the day beating Civil Service 2 - 1 at Madeira Road. There were no problems for West Wickham and their neighvours Old Wilsonians who beat London Lawyers 2 - 0 and Old Cholmeleians 3 - 1 respectively. Merton won 3 - 1 at Lea Valley, Salesians won 1 - 0 at Old Thorntonians and Old Owens had a comfortable passage to the next round with a 6 - 1 victory at Wembley Park. Bank of England had to battle to beat South Bank Cuaco 1 - 0 at Roehampton and Weirside Rangers were knocked out of the competition going down 3 - 0 at Fulham Compton Old Boys. Old Finchleians beat Old Chigwellians 3 - 2 at Southover, Vampires won 2 - 0 at Ignatians, Old Lyo- nians lost 1 - 4 to HAC, Old Parks lost 1 5 at home to UCL Accies, Carshalton lost 1 - 4 at Old Suttonians and Division Two leaders NUFC Oilers on 2 - 0 at Salopians. HSBC scraped through, beating Southgate Olympic on penalties after finishing 1 - 1 after extra time. Kew Assoc beat Lancing OB 2 - 0, Lloyds beat Weirside Rangers 3 - 1, Stationers lost 2 0 at home to Old Meadonians and lastly, Norsemen were well beaten, 7 - 1 by Old Foresters at Hydeside. TIED IN NOTTS It’s always a tough game against Nottsborough who, once they get in front, are a difficult side to beat. Saturday was no exception. Nottsborough, with the wind at their backs, sailed into a 3 - 0 half time lead. The first two goals were both from right wing, left footed corners hit into the six-yard box which the Hill defence failed to deal with. The third from a free kick floated into the area and headed on which Tobi Claridge could not get a strong enough hand to. This third goal was a little fortunate as there was a push on our defender to give the scorer an unchallenged opportunity. Three-nil at half time meant changes. The Hill played the second half with a back three, bringing on Kalil Rouse and Leroy Lunghu for Marco Dall’Alba and Tad Heath. The Hill pressed hard and most of the play was in the Nottsborough half of the pitch. The breakthrough came with a free kick out towards the left touchline. Andy Barrell lined up his shot and struck; the ball floated over the keeper into the far corner to give the Hill a glimmer of hope. Try as we may, we just couldn’t get past the resolute Notts- borough defenders. Barrell had another free kick saved by the keeper and other efforts went high or wide of the target. Nottsborough scored a fourth goal on the break twenty minutes from time. I’m sure the result may have been different had we kicked the other way from the outset. The wind was a huge advantage and it even dropped in the second half! Still, no moans, Nottsborough deserved the win on the day. Poor defending cost the Hill dearly. Hill Round Up - Saturday 8 November The Reserves were at Old Salesians and their poor run continued with a 3 - 1 defeat. Having dispatched of Enfield Old Grammarians in the preliminary round 9-0 and with four wins on the bounce, the home side were full of confidence. playing some trademark superb attacking football. A couple of decent moves fashioned some half chances but the scoreline remained the same at half time. Some tactical changes, moving to three at the back and then having the conditions in the home team’s favour meant that Winchmore were able to get on top in the second half. An early goal from a Barrell free-kick gave the hosts confidence and some of the belief that had been lacking and a good 10 minute spell followed until a Nottsborough break down the left and a whipped in ball was finished to make it 4-1. Page 17 This was now game-over, any momentum that had been built up was gone and the last 15 minutes were fairly uneventful. Nottsborough were deserved winners and we wish them luck in the cup which, as we well know, is a very special competition. It is disappointing that we surrendered so limply for another year, but we have to ensure that this was a one off that will not be repeated. Given how uncharacteristic the performance was and the goals conceded were, hopefully this will be quickly put behind us and we will return to solid defending and a tempo in our play that we are associated with. If we have any intentions on the league, this must happen immediately – next Saturday against Owens. Winchmore Hill 3 Old Garchonians 1 Southern Amateur League - Senior Section Division One Saturday 18 October HILL SOAK UP THE PRESSURE An excellent game of football between two sides that wanted to play football. Winchmore Hill were in the ascendancy in the first half, playing some good passing football and outpacing the visitors. Once again an early goal settled us down. From an Andy Barrell corner Marco Dall'Alba's glancing header flew in the top corner, giving the keeper no chance. After 11 minutes the Hill doubled the score when Rod Beya was put through to score and before the half time whistle blew Beya scored again with a firm header. It could have been five or six at the interval. Chris Davison brought a fine save from the keeper and we had a good opportunity before scoring the first goal. Despite the scoreline, Old Garchonians also played some fine football and were unlucky to come up against an in form side that took their chances well. Dall'Alba was winning the defensive battle, claiming everything in the air. Tad Heath was making some strong tackles to clear the danger and full backs Mattie Knights and James Fraser were winning important tackles. Garchonians came at us in the second half, having the majority of the territory and possession. Hill were relying on the pace with quick breaks from the back. The Hill were defending well but it was a slip from Tad Heath that gave Garchonians a glimmer of hope when his weak back pass to the keeper was a little short. Tobi Claridge was off his line quickly and threw himself at the ball but unluckily caught the advancing forward bringing him down. An obvious penalty followed by a yellow card. Garchonians poured forward in search of a goal to reduce the arrears, Claridge made a good diving save to his left and later a good double-fisted punch clear. Time was running down for the Hill and running out for Garchonians. As the final whistle blew both teams knew that they had been in a game of football! SEASON 2014-15 NUMBER 5 Page 19 Winchmore Hill (9s) 2 Old Parkonians (8s) 1 SAL Minor Section Division Four (North) Saturday 11 October The mighty Winchmore Hill battled their way to a 2-1 victory over Old Parkonians 8s on a predictably overgrown Firs Farm 'pitch'. JD, but they failed to tuck them away. Winchmore began the game in a familiar 4-2-3 -1 formation, but lacking two familiar faces in Creaney and Chris (he likes to be addressed as ‘Joint Golden Boot winner of the whole club last season’, but I’m just going to call him Chris). The road is a cruel mistress. were Ross (CDM) Lamby (CDM) with Jon (RAM) Josh (CAM) Louis (LAM) and me upfront, last season I had 11 goals by this game but this season i couldn't hit water if i fell out of a boat. Entering the changing room i couldn't help but notice that no one was wearing any of our shirts and to confirm my confusion was Steve coming in and stating "Where's Creane? He's got the kit" and then eased everyone’s concern by saying "he went drinking last night and he hasn't got a phone but apparently he was active on facebook 2 hours ago" but after a tense five minutes later Creane walks in with a fresh, clean but albeit damp kit bag. After catching hypothermia within seconds in the outside cold from the wet shirt, we made our way over to our pitch but not before an attempt on the zipline in the playground by Reece but it being "too wet" he decided not to. A couple more chances fell including a brilliant save to keep out Louis and after an immense surge from the back from Townsend but unfortunately couldn't find the open net. The game looked as if it was going to a slow end with our defence brushing away any threats until suddenly there was a break from their left midfield and he was bearing down on goal until Townsend’s last ditch attempt caught the defenders legs outside the box and the inevitable followed after that. Old Parkonians 1 Winchmore Hill (5s) 3 SAL Junior Section Division Four Saturday 25 October An away trip to Old Parkonians for a league match was next on the footie menu for The Hill Fifth team. The pre-game press conference was cancelled as the A406 had some sections closed which meant most of the squad had pregame trips round Ilford. The resulting delay ate into the team warm up time a bit but The Hill arrived in good spirits and expecting a tough encounter against a Parks side who were unbeaten in the league. The Hill lined up with Dave ‘The Cat’ Baker in goal, a back 4 of Oakley, Kerridge, Turner and Barnes, Krich, Adnams, Gymah and Tavarez in midfield with Fujamade and Baker up front which left Anastasiou raring for action on the bench. There were two significant absentees this week; defensive lynchpin Nick Murty and CoCaptain Mark Barrell. Murty was involved in the Tough Mudder charity event (which apparently entailed getting a shiner from a knee in the face!) and Barrell was accompanying many other club representatives (mainly 8s, one 4) on a scouting/fact-finding mission to Crete hoping to improve international relations for the club. Either way, many observers have questioned the organisation of the annual trip as it is always booked from Saturday to Saturday meaning 2 matches missed! Boo! Anyway, back in Redbridge.. As soon as the whistle blew Parks flew into The Hill with some robust tackling in a clear attempt to assert their physicality in the game. Thankfully The Hill were in a no-nonsense mood themselves and matched the home side’s steel in the tackle. This was particularly good as the referee was applying a liberal approach to the advantage rule! Adnams, Fujamade, Krich and Baker all found themselves on the end of some tasty challenges in the opening exchanges. The Hill looked good in possession and were also working hard without the ball. After a battling opening 10 minutes the ball was recycled well in the midfield and played out wide to full back Neil Barnes who advanced into the left midfield position (almost like he was trying to tell the management something..). After looking up to assess the defensive shape, Barnes sent a raking ball from left wing into the area. This caused havoc in the defence and when the keeper flapped at it and the ball dropped, Femi Fujamade pounced to capitalise in predatory fashion for his 7th goal in 4 games. 0-1 to The Hill. The Hill were playing some decent football in spells and any time they passed the ball with a bit of patience they would create chances. The home side were combative and still carried a threat hitting the post before half time and also forcing Dave ‘The Cat’ Baker into an excellent save with his feet. Those chances were a warning for The Hill and they responded well with some resolute defending whilst maintaining their attacking threat. At the other end Andrew Gymah was annoyed at himself for not repeating his long range efforts from the last match after an opportunity presented itself and Paul Baker had a one on one chance saved as The Hill looked to add to their lead. Ten minutes before the break Gymah robbed a Parks player of possession as Parks tried to play out of defence and following an exchange of passes he got to the by line and crossed into the box where Baker was waiting. Baker challenged for the ball with the keeper trying to claim it and defender jumping, none of the 3 players got any meaningful contact and all landed at the same time. Fortunately the ball bounced down just outside the 6 yard box at the feet of Baker who slotted past the keeper inside the near post in true fox-in-the-box style. 0-2 to The Hill. With 5 minutes left of the half, defenders Turner and Kerridge appealed to the team to be smart and not commit too many players forward. They did this as both of them trotted forward to into the opposition penalty to attack a corner! Half time - 0-2 to The Hill Substitution; Anastasiou on for Krich and The Hill were 45 minutes away from a solid win on the road. Parks started the 2nd half with a real determination to get back into the match and nearly did on several occasions. There were an array of chances as The Hill lost their shape and organisation. There were near-miss headers from corners, an excellent long range effort that hit the bar and some superb goalkeeping from Dave ‘The Cat’ Baker who blocked one close range effort and stopped another one on one chance. Under the cosh and not looking after the ball in possession The Hill were inviting pressure and sitting deeper and deeper. They were living a charmed life but were still trying to pass when they did actually get possession; the Parks effort was just rather stifling. However, The Hill remained committed to the defensive effort and were rewarded with another goal, this time against the run of play. The media questioning was dominated by the widely reported sightings of numerous ‘refreshed’ 5th Team players across the capital enjoying alcohol– fuelled late Friday nights. These stories added extra interest in the league clash with the rather dangerous and good footballing side Bank of England 3s, a team that The Hill beat 3-0 on the opening day of the season but that was a score line that did not do BOE justice. Co-Captains Will Adnams and Mark Barrell (both wearing sunglasses) found themselves being accused of poor match preparation for the team. Adnams responded: ‘We can’t speak too much about that; all we can say is that we are currently looking at ways to start games better. We’re a forward thinking team and are open to experimental approaches. Sports scientists might suggest that alcohol has a negative effect on athletes.. well, as many a visionary has said; you can prove anything with facts can’t you? All we’re saying is let’s not close any doors.. relaxing on a Friday night might mean a mentally fresh player on a Saturday mightn’t it? ’ This response was met with laughter and derision by the gathered journalists at which point Adnams stormed out of the press conference and into a utility cupboard before finding the exit. Barrell remained to face the questions but the 5s media team ended the press conference abruptly when they realised he had fallen asleep. and ‘ahhs’ and some players started taking pictures of the lovely green pitches as the buzz of the sports centre amped up the pregame excitement. In team news.. a number of regulars were out including top goal scorer Femi Fujamade with rumours circulating that he was doing an international property deal with an Irish property tycoon. Starting lineup: Dave ‘The Cat’ Baker, Barnes, Murty, Turner, Kerridge, Adnams, Gymah, Barrell, Tavarez, Krich and Baker with Jack Oakley on the bench. The 5s attempt at starting games better seemed to be working OK but the first 10 minutes did not really present many chances. Both teams looked good in possession but appeared to want to rush the play, anxious to get the first goal. It looked as if the first team who were more considered in possession would probably get the breakthrough. Fortunately it was The Hill that struck first; a decent passage of passing down the left with Adnams, Gymah, Krich and Baker combining, led to a square ball being played across to Tavarez just inside the area. He committed a couple of players then touched back to Andrew Gymah who unleashed a rocket of a shot from 23 yards with his left foot which left the keeper no chance and nearly broke the net (an early goal of the season contender). From the whistle the ladies were straight onto Hendon & Mill Hill heels, taking control of the game and pushing the opposition hard. We dominated the first half, with some amazing attacks and fantastic play, building from the defence and putting a lot of pressure on the opposition defence. Middlesex League Premier Division Saturday 1 November Our scoring started from Gemma Burd, who made an amazing supporting run from defence, took the ball just inside the D and hit the ball cleanly on goal to score her second league goal of the season. WH&E continued to attack the game with some creative and unstoppable runs from Kerri Marshall up the right wing with support from the forwards and midfield. After subbing, we continued to control the game and were unfortunate to have a goal disallowed (a kick of the ball in the D from Andrea Bull, whoops!). The play continued and shortly after we went 2 - 0 up with another cracking goal from Liz Coates. We went into the second half with the same positive attitude. Unfortunately the opposition had taken a change in formation in an attempt to mark Kerri out of the game. We retaliated by moving Kerri to centre forward. Although this tactic worked, we were very unsettled with the change of shape and Hendon & MH were fortunate to catch us on the break, scoring a lucky goal. In response we returned to our original starting line up to try to regain control of the game. We soon settled back into our stride, using the entire pitch, switching across the back and not being afraid to take the ball back out to create space. Special mention to the umpires, Sue Murphy (WH&E) and Abdul (H&MH) who kept the game flowing, creating a great match atmosphere. Player of the Match was a well-deserved Gemma Burd who is completely back on form and then some! Winchmore Hill & Enfield v Welwyn Garden City Saturday 8 November I don't normally get round to writing a match report these days because as you all you with your own lives there is so much going on, but I really did want to write a little on this match just to update everyone and give them a flavour of the game. I have now umpired 6 of the 8 games that our M1's have played in the league so far this season and I have to say that in my opinion they continue to improve and improve enormously. Ok, it's a totally different team this year and a team and an ethos that Gary H is trying to bring to the M1's with Duane's help and I for one do think we are looking at a different 1st team compared to previous seasons. Don't get me wrong, our experienced stalwarts and ex M1's are still quality players and their performance in the SW5 league shows that but our new M1's have a real energey about them. This game started fast and our lads were on the front foot immediately and 4 minutes into the game as the ball was knocked into Welwyn's 'D' Russell swept the ball using the reverse side of his stick to lob the keeper. As the keeper floundered, he managed to pad the ball upwards but had lost it in the air and the ball appeared to be going in behind him as it looped down. As the ball landed their keeper was lucky not to knock the ball in his own net as he turned and cleared the ball. So was this an indication of the type of match that we were going to be treated to? It certainly was. 6 minutes later Welwyn burst through on a break and scored a very well worked goal that was moved between 3 of their players on a 3 on 2 power-play before they knocked the ball into our net. Welwyn were now starting to feel as though they were on the upper hand and were certainly playing well until less than a minute later Sam Turmaine received the ball just inside the D with his back to goal and with two more touches he had pushed the ball to his right and had struck the ball reverse stick into the top of the Welwyn goal. In fairness I have seen Sam score some amazing goals and this one was right up there. As the game progressed it was pretty even, however, this is the SEASON 2014-15 NUMBER 5 first game I think I have ever been involved in (playing or umpiring) when the ball has hit the post to deny a goal on 4 separate occasions. Most notably Luke Overington's shot which was so well hit and so hard that had it been just 2-3 inches to the left, it would have maybe even have topped Sam's goal. To cut a long story short, with only 2 minutes left on the watch, the game looked like being a draw until the ball was knocked into the D from the right and out of nowhere, Sam ran in and 'smashed' and I mean smashed the ball into the bottom left of Welwyn's goal. The best I have seen him score since the one he scored in the 11th minute of this game. Two beautifully crafted goals which were both top drawer. The game ended less than 2 minutes later and as you all know it was a 2-1 win to our boys, but what you don't know, unless you saw it, that was a real team performance and the performance of a team that is growing. My man of the match would be a really difficult call, Sam was amazing and unstoppable, Luke was a man possessed and was running like a 23 year old spring chicken, Joe....well Joe is Joe and he certainly got them going and upset their balance. In the middle Ginge and Gaz the skip Page 29 were solid and looked not only accomplished on the ball but also very comfortable and calm, I did like the combo when they were both on together, Russ, well again, really really good on the ball and after last weekend you could have been forgiven if you thought he might have played flat, far from it, a few more matches playing alongside Sam and the two of them will be unstoppable together IMO.....only two more players to mention and for me Man of the Match is between these two players, Jack and Jimbo......both played truly amazing hockey on the day.....Jack with awesome saves and leadership from the back and Jimbo for stopping just about everything that came his way, including most of the power-plays. If I could call it a draw, i would but if I really had to chose, as close as it is I would give it to Jimbo, probably cos I've always been a defender but also because I thought he was just a tiny bit more awesome than Jack on the day. That said, they were both awesome and I really mean that. Great to watch, great to umpire (when they're not moaning) and well done guys......brilliant!!!!
