Did You Know?.... You may see the symbol below on liturgical vestments or texts. It is referred to as the ‘labarum’ or ‘chi-ro’ symbol. It is derived from a joining of the Greek letters X (chi) and P (rho) which are the first two letters of the word, “Christ”. According to tradition, Constantine the Great experienced a vision in 312 A.D. inspiring him to paint this symbol on the shields of his soldiers before fighting his rival for power. He won the subsequent battle and became the first Roman emperor to allow Christianity to be practiced freely (The Story of Christianity, David Bentley Hart (Quercus Publishing), 2007).
