Winter sports hit full stride
The C-I winter sports season has opened.
The
Northern
Lakes
Lightning girls’ varsity hockey
team plays at Rocori Tuesday
while the boys’ team travels to
Detroit Lakes Thursday and
then hosts Kittson Central
Saturday. Tuesday, the boys
travel to Sartell.
The girls’ basketball team
will open a day later than originally scheduled as Cass
Lake/Bena had to cancel due
to a schedule conflict. The girls
will open at Park Rapids
Friday and then host

The Family Physician of
the Year Award is presented
annually to a doctor who specializes in Family Medicine.
Nominations will be

Nominators should write a
letter describing how the candidate has made a difference
in the lives of their patients.
The letter should also explain
the candidate’s outstanding
personal and professional
qualities and community
involvement. Often times a
person or group in a community will lead an effort
encouraging multiple patients

behalf of a particular family
physician who they feel is
doing exceptional work.

Radiothon to End
Child Abuse seeks
auction items
The Radiothon to End
Child Abuse is currently
accepting auction items for
the 21st annual event, scheduled for Dec. 4 and 5.
The Radiothon is a joint
effort of the Crow Wing
County Child Protection
Team, Prevent Child Abuse
Minnesota and the radio stations, WJJY 106.7 FM,
COOL 103.5 FM, B93.3 FM
and 107.5 FM The Power
Loon.
The Radiothon is an
annual fund-raiser to support
children and families in need.
In addition to a pledge line,
the Radiothon also has an
auction line where bids can
be placed on a variety of
items donated from the community. 100 percent of all
monies raised from the auction remain in Crow Wing
County to benefit those most
at risk.
Any donated auction item
with a retail value of $50 or
more will be featured on the
Radiothon auction Web site
and a link to the business or
organization Web site will be
attached. Auction items and
donors names will be broadcast continuously over the
radio during the Radiothon.
Each year the auction Web
site has thousands of hits,
which is a great way to provide advertising and awareness for a business or organization that donates to this
good cause.

Minnesota hunters registered 111,000 deer through
the third and last weekend of
firearms deer season, down
31,000 from the same period
in 2013, according to the
Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources.
So far this year during special hunts and the archery,
early antlerless and firearms
seasons, hunters have harvested 127,000 deer, down
from the 2013 to-date harvest
total of 160,000.
This year’s lower harvest
is by design because regulations were implemented to
place more deer – particularly
does – off limits to increase
Minnesota’s deer population.
The DNR’s ongoing deer
management work also
includes upcoming revisions
to the deer population goals
for large portions of northeastern, north-central and
east-central Minnesota. This
is part of a multi-year goal-
setting process for the entire
state. People interested in
helping set these deer population goals can get more information on the process and
opportunities for involvement
at www.mndnr.gov/deer.
Additional deer will be
harvested during the late
southeastern season, which
ran through Sunday, Nov. 30,
and the muzzleloader season,
which began Saturday, and
continues through Sunday,
Dec. 14. The archery season
also runs through Wednesday,
Dec. 31.
Hoop Shoot contest
Saturday, Dec. 13
The annual Brainerd Elks
Lodge Hoop Shoot Contest is
Saturday, Dec. 13 at
Forestview Middle School in
Baxter for youth (ages 8-13).
Registration will begin at
12:30 p.m. and the contest
begins promptly at 1 p.m.

What to include and what to
camps offered
Three camps are offered
at Mount Ski Gull in Nisswa
for anyone interested in the
ski or snowboard day camps
offered. They are:
—2014 Alpine Racing
Camp held Saturday and
Sunday, Dec. 13-14 from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. This camp is
for skiers that are part of a
race program such as Mount
Ski Gull Alpine Race Team or
the High School Race Team.
—2014 Holiday Break
Ski Camp offers two sessions.
Camp
I—Monday
and
Tuesday, Dec. 22-23 from 9
a.m. to noon. Camp II—
Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2627 from 9 a.m. to noon. Cost
is $90. The camp fees include
rental equipment and lift tickets each day. Adaptive skiing
