Crump, Golf Course Superintendent Dear Members, In the best interest of our new putting surfaces, we have decided to apply a light overseeding to all the greens this fall. The winter weather forecast calls for wet and cold conditions, and overseeding the greens we will help protect them from damage by acting as a protective “blanket” over the tops of the young, tender plants. This decision will also help to provide a more uniform and consistent putting surface, by filling in the thin spots and stabilizing the integrity of the green’s surface. We will only be using Poa Trivialis this year, it is not very heat tolerant and we can force it out as the warmer weather arrives in late May. This grass also allows us to be able to balance the transition so that as the new grass “wakes up” and begins to flourish we can balance our transition so that we maintain a superior putting surface. The seed will go down on Monday, November 3rd, and we will play on them as normal thanks to the pre-emergent already being applied around the entire golf course. The only thing you may notice is the greens being a little slower due to not mowing and watering the greens throughout the day. We will resume cutting after germination has occurred which if the weather holds true, should occur within 10 days of planting. The current plan for the Crenshaw 9 is to close it down Monday, June 1, 2015 so that we can wrap up our renovation of greens and bunkers on the golf course. Total time down should be just like the other 9-hole renovations (8-10 weeks depending on weather). This winter, our team will continue to clean up some of the peripheral areas affected from the flooding. As the leaves drop we can get back in and finish cleaning up some of the areas along the edges of the property and around the creek. We will also be working on installing the fencing throughout the golf course and other detail work and small projects. If time permits, we plan on working on bunkers on the Crenshaw side to get a head start on the last leg of our renovation. As always thank you for everyone’s support and encouragement throughout the past year. It’s always great to hear your feedback and questions. Our team strives to make Onion Creek Club the best we can every day and keep it that special place we all love to escape to. See you on the course! Golfin’ at Onion Creek John Ferguson, Director of Golf Welcome back to the Original Course! Ryan Crump and his crew performed over and beyond expectations to bring the Original Course back. We are so proud to announce that on October 10, 2014, less than a year since the devastating Halloween flood of 2013, the Original Course is back in play and we are up and running again on 27 holes. Big thanks to those who participated in the Grand Re-Opening Golf Tournament on Sunday, November 2 nd. The golf tournament was a huge success! We now have an online tee time booking system on our new website. Log in and go to golf and then book a time. You will see the courses in play for the coming week. The Original course and the North course show up side by side on the booking system. You will notice available times by the green bar that says reserve. Click on the green reserve bar and then add your name and additional players. You can also stick to the old fashion way and give us a call. The beauty of the new system is it is available 24/7 for your convenience. Congrats to those who were apart of the 2014 Men’s Member Guest Classic! Complimentary entertainment, crafts, and Kids Eat Free! November 26th Family BINGO Night December 17th Santa’s Workshop Green Committee Don Milberger Who would have thought it! Less than one year after the worst flood in Onion Creek history we are back to 27 holes of golf. The Original Front Nine has been open almost three months and the Original Back Nine opened on October 10, 2014. Yes--there is still some “growing-in” needed on a couple of greens but by this time next year we should have some of the best greens in Texas. In addition to the new greens, the new bunkers with the new white sand add additional beauty to the course. It is now up to us—the members—to keep the course in great shape. If we all make sure we fix ball marks on the greens, rake the bunker we just blasted out of and “sand” the fairway divot we took when we hit the perfect shot into the green, the course can stay in great condition. It only takes a few seconds to make a repair and these few seconds will pay great dividends in course conditions. There are divot sand boxes on all par three tee boxes so don’t forget to “sand” your divots on these holes. Also, we are installing a “sand bottle rack” on #3 Original. Our hope is golfers will remove a sand bottle from the rack and carry the sand bottle with them to the fairway and “sand” any divots they may see. The golfer can then return the sand bottle back to the rack for use by the next golfer. The golf staff will make sure the sand bottles are filled on a regular basis. More repairs to the course will continue into the winter months. Items like fences, cart paths, and more course clean-up will be addressed when the grass growing season ends in late fall. With the warm weather we have had in September and October, the grass continued to grow and continued to require constant mowing. I guess if you have to have a problem, this is the type of problem you like to face. The current plan is to replace the greens and bunkers on The Crenshaw Nine next spring or summer. Weather will play a big part in when the greens are actually replaced. We need to strike a balance between heavy springtime golf play and having the availability to play on eighteen or twenty-seven holes. Based on the results on the Original Course, I am sure Ryan Crump and his hard working crew will make the correct decision. Thanks to all of you that “wagered a bet” in The WGA/MGA Tournament and The Men’s Member-Guest Tournament. You bet you could hit your ball inside of the circle on #2. We had multiple winners but we had more “donators” that helped put dollars in the Green Committee Tree Fund. Thanks to the “donators” we raised over $1200. In addition, The WGA and MGA both donated $200 each to the tree fund. This gives us a current balance of over $3200. Our current plans are to purchase and plant trees during the winter months as this is the prime planting time for our area. We have tried many different trees to see if we could strike a balance between trees that are fast growing, drought tolerant, and suitable for a golf course. To date, the trees that have best adapted to the course are varieties of Live Oaks. These are beautiful trees but they definitely do not fit into the “fast growing” category. We will continue to look and if you have any suggestions, please tell one of the Green Committee members. Speaking of trees—the new tree at the back of #17 tee was generously donated by Donnie “DJ” Jones. DJ not only donated the tree, he had a crew plant the tree. It is actions like this that make OCC the best club in Texas. Clubs can be good or not so good based on the club members, and OCC has some really great members. If you have any questions or comments about the course, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. If I don’t know the answer, I will find out and get back to you. In the meantime, enjoy the new greens and bunkers and “hit’em straight”. Onion Creek Club Ladies Association Wendy Carrick The 2014 – 2015 programming is underway. Although the storms prevented our first luncheon in September, the Fashion Show by Chico’s downtown has been rescheduled for our May program.
