Chosen to
2014
All-MCAC
Team
Aldermen Edward M. Burke (14th), James Balcer
(11th) and Acting Aviation Commissioner Michael
Boland joined Margaret Houlihan-Smith of United Airlines in unveiling specially designed caissons that will
be used at all Chicago airports to ensure the remains of
fallen soldiers are transported with the utmost dignity
and respect.
The ceremonially-decorated caissons will be known
as the Alderman James Balcer Caissons in acknowledgement of the 11th Ward Alderman's many years in
the City Council as a champion of veterans' causes and
his service during the Vietnam War. Alderman Balcer,
a recipient of the Bronze Star and three Purple Hearts,
is a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps.
The Chicago City Council recently adopted a resolution urging the Chicago Department of Aviation to
partner with Chicago airlines to ensure the remains of
fallen soldiers are transported on the caissons when arriving at Chicago airports.
The event was held on the tarmac at O'Hare International Airport.
in 1985, and has lived above his business there ever
since. “The front window was literally ‘lit up like a
Christmas tree’ with lights reflecting the many displays
of confections gift-boxed with hand-tied, satin bows,
plus stuffed animals and popcorn tins. It was so beautiful and attracted lots of customers.”
“I found an envelope which someone had slid under
the front door on Christmas Eve of 1985…I think I still
have it in my desk. Enclosed was a card with a wintery
scene, a big, wooden door trimmed with greens and antique lighted lamp posts. Hand-written inside was the
message: ‘You have brought light to a street in darkness!!’ and it was signed, The Spirit of Christmas Past.”
Year after year since then, the staff at now Polo Café
and Catering Bridgeport U.S.A. continues to offer
“something different…something wonderful” through
their commitment to excellence, whether in the café or
next door in the Old Eagle Room, or up-stairs where
guests stay in the Bridgeport Bed and Breakfast. “We
touch a lot of lives here!!”
Marking their 30th CHRISTMAS on Morgan is a
special Christmas Musical Pageant THIS SUNDAY,
December 21st, starring Catherine O’Connell, Dan
Murphy and Stan Zimmerman and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres and sweets in the beautifully
decorated Old Eagle Room starting at 4 o’clock. Tickets are $30 and reservations are required at 773-9277656.

St. Barbara Students
Honor Veterans
Recently St. Barbara students, faculty and staff gathered in the gym for a special
Veterans’ Appreciation assembly. Four veterans from four different eras were invited to represent all veterans both living and deceased. Alderman James Balcer, an
alum and Marine, fought in Vietnam; Norman Lasman, a Navy man, fought in World
War II; Victor Sandoval, served in the Army in Iraq; and Luis Jimenez, who served
in the Marines.
The military color guard from the
Chicago Military Academy opened the ceremony with the presentation of colors. The
student body sang our national anthem and
student council president, Adrian Gonzalez, began the introduction of the special
guests. Each veteran addressed the student
body and talked about the pride in serving
our country. It was evident that each of
them was very proud of their decision to
enter the military. The children sang a very
touching song called, “American Tears” beClaudia and her Father. Luis Jimenez. fore presenting each of the veterans with
personal reflections and thank you letters
in addition to a bouquet of red, white and
blue flowers. The assembly ended with the
Pledge to the Flag and the singing of “God
Bless America”. A simple reception followed for the veterans and their sponsors.
Both Mr. Jimenez and Mr. Sandoval
have a child at St. Barbara. Mr. Lasman is
the neighbor of Emma and Nick Bunda,
both students at St. Barbara.
Thank you to the committee of Kathy
Bunda, Diane Rzasa, Sue Foley, Donna
Perez, Barbara Hudren and Nicole Nolazcowho worked hard to put the assembly together. Thank you to the students for the
wonderful patriotic decorations and the
faculty for putting everything up in the
gym. Finally, thank you to Eva Mrgan,
music instructor for helping the children
.Victor and his Father, Victor Sandoval. learn all of the words to the songs.

Santa Lucia School's
Christmas Angels
As part of the Advent Program at Santa Lucia School, the school children picked
a special angel from the Christmas Tree on the first floor of the school. Each angel
contained the name of a child given to the school by the Department of Children and
Family Services. The child on the angel had requested something special for Christmas. Some of the angel children wanted toys, some games and others clothes. Over
45 school and staff families chose an angel from the tree. Many of the angel children
will receive their requests because of the generosity of so many this Christmas.

Delivering Christmas Spirit to the Community
On Saturday, December 13th, at 8:00 a.m., more than 1000 Christmas boxes containing food and gifts will be distributed by employees and friends of Mercy Hospital & Medical Center to older adults in the surrounding communities.
For the past thirty-nine years, Mercy volunteers have braved the cold and snow of
the winter season to distribute hundreds of boxes to the homes of the elderly and underprivileged of their communities.
Since 1974 when Sister Patricia Murphy and Sister June Anselme began the program and 15 boxes were delivered, the program has steadily grown thanks to the efforts of Mercy employees, their families and other volunteers. Last year, more than
1,000 Christmas boxes were delivered by more than 175 cars of volunteers to our elderly patients in our communities.
“This is a day many of our volunteers look forward to all year, they travel from
both near and far, many of which have made it an annual tradition” said Kathy
Gadaliniski, Program Coordinator for Christmas box delivery. “It’s truly a wonderful day - to see the smiles, receive the hugs and hear the appreciation from those we
are helping is what the Christmas season and our mission is all about,” she adds.
Pictured with Victor Megaro and Charles Di Caro Jr. are Alderman James Balcer, Club President, Gino Bruno and some members and their children.

Rep. Lipinski’s Bill Renaming Mount
Greenwood Post Office for
Fallen Firefighter Capt. Herbie Johnson
Clears Congress, Sent to President
The Senate has passed Congressman Dan Lipinski’s (IL-3) bill renaming
Chicago’s Mount Greenwood Post Office as the Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial
Post Office Building. Captain Herbert “Herbie” Johnson died on November 2,
2012, at the age of 54, while battling flames in the attic of a two-story home on
Chicago’s South Side. The bill passed the House earlier this year and now awaits
the President’s signature.
This morning, Rep. Lipinski was joined by members of Herbie Johnson’s family, local firefighters, and Ald. Matt O’Shea at the Mount Greenwood Post Office,
located at 3349 West 111th Street, to celebrate passage of the bill.
“Captain Johnson heroically served area residents for over 32 years, paying the
ultimate price while protecting his city’s residents,” Rep. Lipinski said. “While his
duties took him to almost every part of Chicago, his heart belonged to the Southwest Side, especially to the close-knit community of Mount Greenwood. Herbie’s
wife of 28 years, Susan, his two sons, Thomas and Michael and his daughter,
Laurie, as well as all of Herbie’s family, continue to be in my prayers and the
prayers of so many other people in the surrounding area who knew him well, not
only as a courageous and dedicated public servant, but also as an outgoing and
caring neighbor and friend.”
Captain Johnson learned public service from his family. Three of his brothers are
Chicago police officers, a sister is a retired Chicago police officer and another brother is a Chicago firefighter.
Over the years, Johnson taught over one thousand recruits as an instructor at the
Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy and is fondly remembered by those he taught. After
the terrorist attacks on 9-11, he volunteered with the rescue efforts in New York
City. In 2007, he received the state’s highest award for firefighters, the Illinois
Medal of Honor, for rescuing several children from a burning apartment.
“Naming a postal facility honoring Captain Johnson is not just a tribute to him
and his family, but all first responders who bravely put their lives on the line every
day, often for people they don’t even know,” said Congressman Lipinski. “This post
office naming will ensure that Captain Herbie Johnson, his family and the sacrifices
of all heroic first responders will always be remembered and appreciated”.

MEMORARE
Remember, O most gracious Virgin
Mary, that never was it known that
anyone who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. Inspired
by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O
Virgin of virgins, my mother; to thee
do I come, before thee I stand, sinful
and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word
Incarnate, despise not my petitions,
but in thy mercy hear and answer
me. Amen.

the story of a quest for wealth, given enough time, will
