Message from the
Principal
Dear Feltwell Stakeholders,
We will dismiss for Winter Break at 1500 on
December 19th and resume on January 5th, 2015.
On behalf of the Feltwell Elementary School
faculty and staff, we want to wish you and your
families a very joyous holiday season!
Sincerely,
Miles J. Shea
Principal
The Feltwell Bus Office is located in Building 58 at
RAF Feltwell. If you require any information
regarding bus passes, pick-up and drop-off times and
locations, please contact their office at 226-7013. If
your child should misplace their bus pass or if you
have had a change to your residence and need a new
pass, please contact their office for assistance.
OPERATING HOURS: MONDAY – FRIDAY
0830-1400 and 1530-1630. NON-SCHOOL DAYS
0800-1630
It is very important to have an emergency plan for
your child, should there ever be an early dismissal
from school. In the event of severe weather, students
might be sent home early, and each parent/student
should have a plan for where their child would go.
Please inform their classroom teacher of this plan.
Whenever bringing your child to school after the
school day begins or if you are picking them up
early, please be sure to sign them in or out at the
Main Office.
Please remember that if you are not following the
“normal” end of the day routine for your child, send a
note or call the front office before 1400 to let us
know about the change. If we don’t have a note or
call, your child will follow their normal end of the
day routine.
If you are picking your child up after school, please
arrange to meet them on the playground by the
wooden fence, which is next to the parent parking lot.
As a security reminder, all visitors to the school are
required to check in at the Main Office.
We attempt to keep our contact information up to
date throughout the school year. This information is
used by the nurse when she needs to contact parents
about a sick or injured child or in the event of an
emergency. Please take the time to provide your
current information to our Registrar, Mandy Perez,
at: [email protected].

communication between parents and teachers easier,
more effective and timelier. Since GradeSpeed is
web-based, the program can be accessed from
anywhere. Parents who are deployed will be able to
stay informed and involved in their child's academic
life regardless of location.
Parents must register at: dodea.gradespeed.net to
establish a personal GradeSpeed access account.
After their account has been established, parents will
be able to login to view grade and attendance data
only for their student. They will also be able to view
school announcements and calendar events. There is
a note feature available in GradeSpeed that parents
can use to directly contact their student's teachers.

While there is some disagreement about which week in
December actually constitutes National Hand Washing
Week, there is no better time than now to practice good
hand washing. Colds, the flu, and runny noses are very
common with the onset of winter. Hand washing is the
Number One way to prevent the spread of germs that
lead to illness. Follow these easy tips:
The 4 Principles of Hand Washing:
1. Do wash your hands when they are dirty,
after using the restroom, and BEFORE
eating.
2. Do cough and sneeze into your sleeve or
arm.
3. Do keep your hands away from your
face.
Ms. Laedlein’s (3rd grade), Ms. Shutak’s (3rd grade),
and Ms. Barkauskas’ (2nd grade) classes participated
in a Heritage Luncheon. Students brainstormed with
their parents to come up with a special dish
traditional to their family and then helped prepare
and share in the feast. The recipes will be compiled
and each student will receive a Heritage Luncheon
Cookbook.
The PTO would like to thank all of the amazing FES
families for their support with the Book Fair and the
Blue Bag Fundraiser. Enough books were sold
through the Book Fair to gift over $1,100 in books to
the school, and almost 400 bags of clothing were
donated!
Also, don’t forget! The
Santa Store will run
December 9th-11th above
the cafeteria. Prices will
range anywhere from
just $0.25 to $20.00 for
gifts.

introduce new or unfamiliar concepts or skills.
Homework assignments shall be designed to meet the
needs and abilities of individual students. The burden
that homework places on a student will be considered
when assignments are made. In making homework
assignments, consideration should be given to school
events and other subject area requirements.
Please review with your Hedgehogs so that they are
aware of our school-wide expectations.
According to the DoDEA Homework Policy Letter
(2000.9), the development of study skills must be an
integral part of DoDDS regional, district, and school
educational policies. DoDDS strongly supports the
philosophy that homework is a necessary adjunct to
school life, which serves different purposes
according to the student's grade level.
On average students in Grades 1-3 will receive 2-4
hours of homework per week; Grades 4-6 will
receive 5-6 hours per week; Grades 7-8 will receive
7-9 hours per week; and Grades 9-12 will receive 1015 hours of homework per week.
Homework assignments are reinforcements for
classroom curricular areas and are assigned to
support student learning as appropriate for the ability
of the student. Assigned homework will reinforce
instruction accomplished in class; it will not

Recess and outdoor play are important for our
children throughout all seasons- even winter. But we
also want our children to be safe and that means
making sure they are dressed appropriately for the
weather. Here are some guidelines we have
established here at Feltwell Elementary School for
the well-being of your children:

Above 60°F (15°C) - No coat is needed but
make sure your child is dressed in layers;

Between 32 to 59° (0-15°C) - Your child
must have a coat and must take it to the
playground;

Below 32°F (0°C) - Your child must wear a
coat, hat and gloves.

Our Marshmallow/Spaghetti Challenge results are
being ‘crunched’ by the 4th and 5th grade classes as I
teach them mean, median, mode, range and various
styles of graphs. The three highest structures
(measured in inches) from each grade level were:
 Fifth-28, 19 ½ and 13 ½
 Fourth-15 ½, 13 ¾ and 11
 Third-18 ¼, 17 ½ and 13
 Second-20, 19 ¼ and 18 (two classes tied
with a 20” structure)
 First-12 ¼, 11 ¼ and 10 ¾
Here are pictures of the teams with the highest
structure for their grade level. You’ll observe a
variety of engineering styles! 

Ms. Laedlein’s 3rd grade class had a very important
visitor surprise them with her presence. Hedgie is a
young, white-nosed hedgehog purchased from a special
breeder in London.
Q: What did one eye say to the other?
A: Between me and you, something smells. Ha!
