s we celebrate the birth of the
Christ child, I want to take this
opportunity on behalf of the staff
at First Church to wish you a very Merry
Christmas. This Advent Season has been
a special time as our children, youth, and
adults presented “Follow the Star – Follow the Light!” It was an honor to present this original program to celebrate the
Christmas season. First Church is
blessed to have so many talented persons
and I want to thank everyone for their
contribution.
In John 1:1ff, it says, “In the beginning
was the Word….” It sounds a bit odd to
begin telling the Christmas story in this
fashion but John is eager for us to understand that Jesus had His beginnings long
before that night in Bethlehem. And yet
as John reminds us, “He was in the
world, and the world came into being
through him; yet the world did not know
him. He came to what was his own, and
his own people did not accept him.”
(John 1:10-11) Christ accepted rejection by his
own family so that He
might begin a new family, a family that you and
I are invited to join. In this season when
we are keenly aware that many feel alone
and abandoned, let none of us overlook
our Lord’s embrace. This is the true
Holy Family of which we are all a part.
I want to invite you and your family and
friends, to join us on Christmas Eve for
one of the special Christmas Eve Communion Services. I assure you these will
be especially meaningful as we share the
birth of Christ.
Finally, Barbara and I wish each of you
a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year.

Happy 50th Anniversary to Joe & Mary Ann Burgess!
Longtime First Church members Joseph and Mary Ann
Burgess, whose romance began in early January, 1964,
will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on
Sunday, Dec. 21.
Although the two first met in late September or early
October, 1961 at the University of Kentucky, it wasn’t
until a few days before the 1964 spring semester started
that a relationship began. The temperature was in the low
20s and there was over a half a foot of snow covering
the campus when Louisville native Mary Ann (Erb),
headed toward a definite destination, and Beaver Dam
native Joe, as he says, “sort of wandering around, probably with no definite destination,” met by chance at a
sidewalk intersection. They talked for a half an hour in
the freezing weather, which encouraged Joe to ask her
for a date.
“Mary Ann didn’t seem to mind standing in the cold
talking to me – and I probably wasn’t even noticing the
cold,” Joe said. “She didn’t hesitate to accept my invitation for a movie and pizza when I called the next day or
so.” Mary Ann says she was hoping Joe would call. The
1964 UK graduates been “going steady” ever since.

Korea, the latter locations when Joe was a Navy officer
during the late 1960s.
The couple welcomes good wishes for their romance
to continue for many more years.
Stained Glass Window Update..
ONLY ONE MORE LEFT!
Church Flowers Help Bring Spring Early!
The efforts of many church members over the past 6
years has brought us to this point — we have only one
remaining window to restore! The remaining window
is in the Chapel just off the narthex. One of the two windows has already been removed and re-worked and is
scheduled to be replaced next week. We would LOVE
to remove the other window when the restored window
is re-installed.
The cost to restore the remaining window is $8500. If
you would like to make a contribution in whole or in
part, please contact Paul Mauer or Dr. Phil.

UMW ‐ Faith, Hope, Love in Action
Thank you to all who contributed to our collection for
the ladies at Golden Living! We had a wonderful collection of clothing, pajamas, house shoes, socks, lotions/soaps, and blanket throws. Those have been
delivered and will be given as Christmas gifts.
As you received those new calendars for 2015, be sure
to mark our first unit meeting of the year. We will have
a soup/salad luncheon on Tuesday, January 13th at
11:30 am in Asbury Hall. The annual “Call to Prayer
and Self Denial” program will be led by Cindy Littleton,
Spiritual Growth Coordinator. This program will highlight a special mission project designated by United
Methodist Women, and an offering will be collected in
its support. Another important part of this meeting is our
annual Pledge Service which will be led by Julia
Hughes. We will have the opportunity to make our 2015
giving commitment to UMW. If you are unable to attend, you may contact Julia Hughes, Treasurer, or your
circle chairs to present your pledge. We hope you can
come and join us for the beginning of another wonderful year of missions!

UMW library yet, but available at the Paul Sawyier Library.
Women's Winter Study
Our women's bible study will resume on January 8 with
a six week study of "Jeremiah: Daring to Hope in an
Unstable World." We meet from 10 to 11:30 in the Averill House (next door to the Wesley Center). Work books
with daily readings are $11 and can be picked up at the
church office. Themes for this DVD/discussion group
include Raising the White Flag (Surrender); Recognizing Counterfeits and the Real Deal (Idolatry); Opening
Our Ears (Listening); Staying spiritually Sensitive
(Heart Issues); Quitting the Blame Game (Personal Responsibility); and Finding the Source of Our Hope (The
Promised Messiah). Contact the church office or Tonya

Living Longer and Loving It in January
The Triple L group will meet at 11:30 on Thursday,
January 15 in the Wesley Center Asbury Hall. After a
chili lunch ($5), we will hear from Amy Nance, resource
director for Franklin County High School, regarding the
new Alatern groups in our county. Information about alcohol abuse in our area as well as resources available
for teens and others will be highlighted.

Our church has been very blessed and Christ has been
glorified several times over the past two months by those
in our congregation who serve as worship leaders in our
church and today, I publicly give thanks for their efforts.
From the preparation and rehearsals for our All Saint's
Day worship service, to the Healing Hearts service, our
"Follow the Star- Follow the Light" Christmas programs, and our weekly worship services, we have seen
the tireless dedication of many to making our church a
place of meaningful worship. I would fail miserably if
I attempted to name everyone but our choirs, leaders,
youth, praise teams all contribute strongly to these efforts and for them I give thanks. God bless you all for
everything you have done and for everything you will
do in the coming year. To God be the glory!
I want to extend a very special thank you to our resident
wood repair specialist, Don Hughes, Sr. who has repaired several items over the past month. Our pulpit, an
acolyte chair, a stand in the choir room, and a wooden
desk drawer have all been graciously and meticulously
repaired by Don to look good as new. Thank you for
your time and skill!
Kids Konnection through Bible Black Belt
Our Wonderful Wednesday afterschool program resumes on January 7. Children can be picked up from all
of our public elementary schools. They join together for
snack,. homework help and our new series, "Bible Black
Belt: Scripture with a Kick." Our children will have the
opportunity to earn nine belt levels through learning different Scripture passages and Bible skills. If you would
like to help with homework, teaching or provide snacks,
please contact Tonya Kenner. Our program begins at 3
and ends by 5:15.
