WORLD CHRISTIAN BROADCASTING NEWSLETTER ATTENTION, WORLD: HERE WE COME! Do you know these men from Afghanistan? Probably not. As of November 14 there is one thing you can know about them: They will soon be able to tune into World Christian Broadcasting’s station from Madagascar and hear — perhaps for the first time! — the name of Jesus. (Notice the radios at their feet!) Inside "It Didn't Come From Santa", Pg 2 Season's Greetings, Pg 2 Medical Missions To Madagascar, Pg 3 Afghan men listening to shortwave radio Listener Letters, Pg 4 On November 14, 2014, the government of Madagascar handed over to representatives of World Christian Broadcasting the “Accord de Siege” which allows us to do business in Madagascar. We have been praying for years about this document. Some Useful Tips For Giving Stock, Pg 10 World Christian Broadcasting was first invited by the president of Madagascar in 2003 to build a station. Construction on the station actually began in 2006. All was proceeding well until a political coup on the island disrupted our plans, and from then until now we have been waiting, waiting, waiting for governmental approval. The station has been finished for two years, but until the final approval by the government we could not — would not — ship the $2 million worth of state-of-the-art shortwave transmitters. With the “Accord de Siege” signed by the Malagasy government, we have now directed that the transmitters be sent on the first available ship from Houston to Madagascar. When we met to plan this issue, we agreed the importance of the Accord de Seige placed it as the top story. Each year there are discussions regarding how to explain Santa to children as they mature. Various rationale are posited from tradition, faith destroying, spirit of giving, etc. World Christian Broadcasting staff, board and supporters have been looking for and praying for this document for a decade. It is not like the result of a letter written to Santa. It wasn't done because cookies and milk were left out for a "jolly old elf". Simply stated, "It didn't come from Santa!" So, if it wasn't Santa, who made it possible? It didn't just happen! This ministry had some setbacks in its beginning. The deaths of some key planners, a fire in Alaska and the lack of finances. In each case God has answered prayer in His time. We may not always understand why there are delays but He does. We can be assured that when the time is right, He will act and we will give God the glory! MEDICAL MISSIONS TO MADAGASCAR By Rob Scobey “What mission work can we do, with the resources we have, while we await that first broadcast from Madagascar World Voice (MWV)?” That was one of numerous questions raised by the new radio station’s delays that persisted into the second decade of the new millennium. So, the decision was made to pursue a ground campaign in and around the community that serves as home to the over-the-air station. The campaign — now having been completed two years in a row — would include a medical mission. The mission partner, Partners in Progress, a church affiliated humanitarian ministry, does everything from provide People are lined up near the sign for Madagascar World Voice waiting to see one of the doctors. clean water to third world communities, to providing doctors and nurses to places that don’t have them. This elderly man is having his blood pressure measured as part of his treatment. For the people of Madagascar, Partners in Progress provided 21 medical team members and World Christian Broadcasting provided about a dozen staff members from Madagascar World Voice to assist. The team worked for five days during October of 2014. According to Bill McDonough, President of Partners in Progress, its 21 team members, from the U.S. and Germany, included six medical doctors, one dentist, and two optometrists. Also included were one certified ophthalmic technician, two pharmacists, three registered nurses, and six auxiliary helpers including Bill Continued on page 9 Page 3 LETTERS FROM LISTENERS From Japan: From Australia: I am a listener to be enjoying your broadcast. Thank you for always for the great broadcast. The contents are streets of the attached file. Please check it. If it correspondence with your program, would you please give me your QSL card. I heard some music, and then the announcer was discussing Jesus disciple John, and reading from the book of John. Another listener from Japan writes: “I like music of KNLS in particular. There are Bible talking and various topics in the others and can enjoy it very much.” From Indonesia, this listener commented with his reception report: I hope these details are enough to indicate how well your station can be received here in Indonesia. If the details are correct, please verify with a QSL verification card. A pennant station, Schedules, would also be appreciated if these are available. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon and thank you very much for your information. From the USA: “I enjoy listening to religious broadcasting on shortwave radio and listen in every day. I used to listen to KNLS when I was stationed in Asia with the military and I still listen whenever my local conditions and propagations permit.” From India: Dear Sir, I was an avowed listener of shortwave radio stations for over decade or so, but owing to my bodily impairment and some other sundries, I was unable to get myself motivated and remained a cocoon and was full detached for quite some time. Today when I was lazily fiddling with my radio suddenly I came across to your station KNLS broadcasting in English language after a long time and got re-kindled. I still remember I heard your station for the first time on 18th December, 1985 and I received your QSL for the frequency 6145 kHz. Its really enjoy listening to your station after long 28 years. I hope to hear from you very soon and till than all the very best to you and please convey my best regards to each and everyone at KNLS The New Life Station. God bless you all. Page 4 I enjoyed the program very much, and would like to request a QSL confirmation of receiving your station. From Jinlin Province, CHINA Dear Friend: It is a long time since I write to you. Today I search SMZG.ORG and listen for the recording. It benefits me a lot. Miss you so much my SMZG Radio Station and my friend. Hope you well. From Russia: Dear radiostation KNLS! We love your program and we are looking forward to listening to it. My name is Tatiana. I am a member of Russian Orthodox Church. I like your programs because they are very interesting. For three years the disciples were so close to Jesus, heard His words, witnessed His miracles, but only His resurrection they realized and believed that Jesus was God. No doubt that He would be resurrected. God the Father took care of it. We are always alive with God and it is so wonderful to live with Him. It is good when children learn about Jesus. The sooner they learn about Him the better, because they will see the world in different way than when they don’t know God. There are so many denominations and sects that it is difficult to understand what is what. It is good that you deal with this topic. Very often people, who consider themselves to be believers, criticize others who are different from them. But in spite of it, our wonderful Lord loves each of us, whether they know about it or not. It is better for them to know about His love, because in this case He can be called “Abba”. We should not be afraid of Him, but we must love and enjoy our life , thank and glorify our Creator. Hallelujah! May God bless you abundantly! May He give you love and peace! Respectfully, Tatiana Memorial Gifts for Sept. 15 - Nov. 26, 2014 CECIL ACREE George & Sara Caudill Emma J. On Friday, November 14, 2014, World Christian Broadcasting received the official document authorizing us to do business - proceed with our broadcasting activities on the island nation of Madagascar. As our supporters know, we have been praying and longing for this day for some three years. May God be praised for this great event! The Lord willing, we will begin broadcasting from Madagascar this next year. Half of the world will receive a strong message in Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, English and Africanized English from there. When this station, MWV, joins our KNLS broadcasts from Alaska we will cover the world. Just imagine what that can mean. Several of our generous donors have suggested a way they would like to celebrate this longawaited news. As an expression of their excitement for this news they have issued a challenge to give $150,000, dependent upon other donors matching that amount in new gifts. Please join our grateful staff and supporters in celebrating this Wonderful News! Forgive us for the short notice, but we are asking you to express your joy by sending your dollars that will be matched dollar for dollar up to $150,000 by the end of December. Please put “Celebrate Madagascar” on your check. Among other current needs, these funds will be used for costs associated with shipping and installing our transmitters in our Madagascar station. Thanks are being given to God for making this great event possible! Thank you for joining with all our other donors in this remarkable celebration! MEDICAL MISSIONS TO MADAGASCAR Continued from Page 3 and his wife Marie-Claire. The medical team tended to 1973 patients during its five-day visit. World Christian Broadcasting and Partners in Progress also sent a medical team to Madagascar in March, 2013. World Christian Broadcasting continues to think globally in terms of our mission. But our participation in these medical missions provided an unusual opportunity to act locally and be an active part of the community. This lady is being examined with a stethescope by one of the members of the medical team. Page 9 SOME USEFUL TIPS FOR GIVING STOCK Hopefully, you have already realized the financial benefits of making your charitable donations by giving stock or mutual funds and have begun using that strategy. Here is a quick synopsis of why it makes sense for you. Let’s say you want to make a gift to a favored charity. Furthermore, let’s say you have $10,000 of stock you are willing to use to make this gift. Suppose your cost basis for the security is $4000 (40%) of its current market price. Selling that stock would create a capital gain of $6,000 (60%) of the sale. If this sale subjects you to a 30% tax, and you held the money you would have to pay in capital gains taxes ($1,800), you would only be able to give $8,200. Obviously, you get an $8,200 charitable deduction. That is wonderful. However, with this example you would be responsible for $1800 for the sale of the stock. On the other hand, if you just gave the stock you otherwise would have had to sell, you would get a charitable deduction of $10,000, PLUS – you completely avoid any capital gains taxation since you did not sell that stock. So, in this example, you would save about $1800 by giving stock, in addition to knowing you made a larger gift than you thought you would be able to do. In this example, you would also save income tax on the additional $1,800 value of your gift. This would be an additional $540 if your tax bracket is 30%. What stock or mutual fund should you give? Here are some things to consider: 1. It should be a stock or gift that is in a taxable account. You would lose this advantage by giving stock from an IRA or any tax-deferred account, for example. 2. It should be a security that has had a nice appreciation. The greater the percent of appreciation the greater is your tax savings. 3. You should have held the security over one year at the time of the gift. This means your holding period is now ‘long-term’. You can only use securities that have been held ‘long-term’ for this transaction. 4. You may need advice from your financial adviser or broker here, but it is usually preferred to give securities that currently have less likelihood of appreciation. One final strategy you may want to consider. Many people like the idea of keeping as much of their money as possible working for them. Even though you have used a long-held stock to make your desired donation, you can replace the value of the gift with cash back into your stock account. This allows you to keep your portfolio at the same level - you simply saved on future taxes by giving an appreciated asset instead of the actual cash. If you have an interest in making a donation using stock and want assistance, please contact Ben Powell at the following address: Ben Powell, 605 Bradley Ct., Franklin, TN 37067 Phone: (615) 371-8707 or Email: [email protected] Page 10 SUMMARY OF 2013 FINANCIALS We happily present this summary of our 2013 finances. The Lord continued to bless World Christian Broadcasting during 2013. Generous gifts from friends like you made this possible. Please accept the sincere gratitude of every person who works with this ministry. Please know that we ask for God’s direction constantly in order that we may be good stewards of the wonderfully generous gifts we receive. We ask for your prayers as we continue our partnership together for our Lord. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call Ben Powell, CFO, or me. Continued from page 1 India, and western China and Russia who will soon be able to tune in to MWV (Madagascar World Voice) and hear the Good News of Jesus Christ! Many of the countries in MWV’s listening range are off limits to “bootson-the-ground” missionaries. In some of these countries, people are afraid to correspond by mail about any religious topic. For many people in these regions, the internet is unheard of. But once MWV is operational, all they have to do is tune their radios in the privacy of their homes, and they will hear wonderful news — Good News — they have never heard before. Here are some statistics you may not have read before: people who research such things are confident there are roughly 3 billion shortwave receivers in the world. (Very few are in North America or Europe, of course, but most of them are in the broadcast area of MWV!) Roughly one billion of those shortwave radios are turned on at any time of the night or day, and each one is being listened to by an average of three people. This means that at any one time, there are three billion people listening to shortwave radio day and night! The fact that the government of Madagascar has given a green light to our station is nothing less than the work of God. We expect MWV to be turned on sometime in 2015. Between MWV in Madagascar and KNLS in Alaska, roughly 90% of the world (all but North America) will be within the sound of our voice. Is that not worth a “Hallelujah!” and a prayer of thanks to the God who is providing it all? As you pray, thank God for this great event. Ask Him for His blessings as we move forward with shipping the transmitters from Houston to Madagascar. Our staff in Madagascar has done a great job in preparing the station site. Our Programming staff in Franklin, Tennessee, is working hard to assure that we will have programming ready to fill up the broadcast days from both Madagascar and Alaska. Of course, with added blessings always come added responsibilities. To ship the transmitters to Madagascar, to fill the huge tanks with 128,000 liters of diesel fuel necessary — (we must generate our own electricity), and to provide for other start-up costs, roughly $250,000 is needed. But think about this: for every $1,000 of Madagascar expenses, our potential audience will be one million people. Where else can you spend $1,000 and reach one million people? 605 Bradley Ct., Franklin, TN 37067, is the address that will receive your gifts. Questions?
