Creating Invincible Youth--The Work of Integrative Youth Development
Why do some children survive traumatic childhoods unscathed? Nearly 50 years ago, child psychologist Emmy
Werner went looking for trouble in paradise. In 1955 she began studying the children of chronically poor, alcoholic, abusive, and even psychotic parents to try and understand (and document) how “failure” was passed
down, from one generation to the next. Her findings were a welcome surprise. She found that one out of every
three youths she studied behaved nothing like the ones headed for disaster. She found that somehow these
“resilient youth” could beat the odds and grow into emotionally healthy, competent adults.

Literacy Centres and Making Words

In this session, participants will have the opportunity to examine a
number of literacy centres and start developing centres that will work
for their learners. Effective literacy centres allow teachers to work with
guided reading groups while students independently practice literacy
skills they have been taught previously.
Making Words and Making Big Words (by Patricia Cunningham) are
spelling skills that can be reinforced in literacy centres. A variety of lessons will be demonstrated at different grade levels and ways of differentiating lessons will be shared. The skills your learners learn can be
transferred to all subjects areas and can be used all year long.

“The Zones” is curriculum designed by Leah Kuypers to teach self-regulation and awareness through the use of four concrete zones. This curriculum provides strategies to teach students to become more aware of,
and independent in, controlling their emotions and impulses, managing
their sensory needs, and improving their ability to problem solve conflicts. Kari will share the curriculum and her experiences in using it with
students in grades 1 through 8 both in small groups and individually. The
results have been amazing and she is so excited to share it with others.
Intro to Project-Based Learning

Learn the fundamentals of project-based learning development and
implementation in this three-day workshop for up to 35 teachers and instructional leaders. Highly interactive by design, this workshop balances
work-time with engaging didactics, activities, facilitated discussions,
protocols and task review checkpoints. Edmodo is interwoven throughout the training to model technology integration as well as support specific technology learning outcomes. The training results in usable, peerreviewed project-based units participants can implement.
Addressing Cyberbullying, Sexting & Unwise Social
Networking: The Role of Parents

Designed for parents and community partners, this presentation provides a broad overview of adolescent technological concerns, including cyberbullying and social networking sites. Foundational information of the way adolescents use the Internet and cell phones is first
provided before examining cyberbullying, sexting, and unwise social
networking in detail. Strategies for identification, prevention, and response are then discussed in a conversational format to allow for input
and Q&A from the audience. Attendees will leave equipped with an
increased ability to promote safe and responsible participation in cyberspace among the youth they care for, and with numerous resources
to assist them towards those ends.
School Climate 2.0: Cyberbullying, Sexting & Unsafe

This presentation is designed for school administrators, counselors,
social workers, psychologists, and other professionals who desire a
comprehensive understanding of (and action plan to deal with) cyberbullying, sexting, and unsafe social networking. It will share recommendations for formal policy implementation and enforcement, as

a consistent theme throughout will be that it takes a coordinated effort

as an FNMI perspective. We will also be discussing the basics of building these types of activities, and looking at resources that are available
to aid in understanding the FNMI perspectives.

Play Therapy for Educators (Yellow Stream Program)

Daily 5: Classroom Structure that Increases Literacy through Student
Accountability, Independence and Targeted Instruction.
Gail Boushey and Joan Moser “The 2 Sisters” start by presenting the
foundational brain and learning research underlying The Daily 5 and
the five core literacy components that, practiced every day, create independent readers and writers. This workshop
covers basic and advanced Daily 5 techniques
for structuring classroom literacy time so students can work independently and productively while you deliver instruction in small
groups and one-on-one.
Participants will learn how to:
• Apply the Daily 5 structure for their classroom’s grade level (K-9)
• Integrate the Daily 5 and CAFE for maximum impact
• Support implementation of a learner-focused approach as
identified in the Ministerial Order
