A S U P E R I O R Dear Customer, P R O D U C T Niedner is celebrating 110 years of continuous operation in 2005. As the oldest manufacturer of fire hose in North America, Niedner can attribute its longevity to our inherent desire and ability to supply you, the customer, with the products you want. T H AT In the early 1980’s, Niedner pioneered the development of lightweight hose using DesmopanTM and EncapTM. Further improvements to these products in the 1990’s led to the development of lightweight E.P.D.M. rubber lined hose and DALCOATTM superior protective coating. In the late 1990s we introduced REELTEX®, a lightweight rigid reel hose and GLOTEKTM a retro-reflective hose. In the year 2000 we began working with the automotive industry on specialized products. S U P P O R T S The new millennium brought about further innovations in products such as DOUBLE 5 BRANDTM, TIDALWAVE 600TM, POWERLINE®, and HOTSTOP®. Y O U DOUBLE 5 BRANDTM, and TIDALWAVE 600TM made feasible the efficient delivery of large volumes of water at high pressures for the protection of petro-chemical installations. POWERLINE® introduced a new concept in hose to reduce the kinking tendencies in lightweight hose when using low-pressure nozzles. Finally, HOTSTOP® incorporated ARAMID yarns to raise the burn and abrasion resistance of the ever-popular REELTEX® hose to a new level. These new developments continue our commitment to be the company that will produce the lightest, most rugged and durable hoses available in the market today. I N We thank you for selecting Niedner products. TROUTNER June 15, 1939 - Feb 10, 2004 To all who knew him on a professional basis, Tom Troutner was the quintessential salesman. However, he was much more than that; he was a Husband and Father, a U.S. Marine, and a Niedner Associate, but above all else he was a true friend. Tom would do whatever it took to support another’s endeavors; he always had a cheerful quip or humorous anecdote to lift one’s spirits; and Tom was always willing to assist others, even at the expense of his own projects. Persons like Tom Troutner are very rare indeed and may only come along once in a lifetime. All who knew him are truly thankful to have had the privilege of sharing a small part of this great man’s life. He is sorely missed by all. “A true gentleman and a great pleasure to have worked with”. Niedner’s philosophy is to design and to manufacture a fire hose that is lighter in weight, more compact for packing, and totally compliant with the requirements of NFPA. The following care and handling suggestions will ensure long Niedner Hose life with optimum performance. General Care Even though most Niedner hose products are made with synthetic components, and this hose may be stored without having to be dried, foreign materials trapped in the weave of the hose might be a breeding ground for mildew. Mildew will not attack the hose physically, but may look unpleasant and could have an odor. Therefore, it is recommended that dirty hose be cleaned with a mild detergent (not a solvent), and then be dried before reloading on the truck or storing. When left stored for any length of time, either on a rig or in storage, hose should be exposed to freely circulating air. Hose Bed Storage Fire hose should always be loaded into the hose bed flat, and not on its edge. Loading flat will avoid the premature hose wear that can occur when hose is loaded on its edge. Large diameter hose should also be loaded flat, with the couplings together in a space all the way forward in the hose bed. Periodically, hose beds and surrounding surfaces should be inspected for any sharp burrs, protrusions, rough edges or corners. If noted, these hose-damaging imperfections must be corrected before loading hose. A hose bed cover is recommended to prevent prolonged exposure of the hose to sunlight. Draining Hose Under some circumstances when fire hose is drained, it is possible for the inner jacket to collapse and to fold over on itself. This may appear as a twist, but it is not, and it can be easily corrected. Slowly recharge the hose, removing all kinks and twists, and then allow the hose to drain slowly. If needed, roll the couplings over so that the hose is in its original lay flat position. This is easily done if the hose still has some water in it. If the hose is not laid on an incline, walking a pike pole its length should drain it completely. If laid on an incline, cap or fold over the high end, then allow the hose to drain at the low end. This will allow the hose to pull itself flat as it drains, and then may be ready to reload onto the pumper. Testing & Inspection As with all fire hose, Niedner hose should be inspected and service tested annually. Follow the guidelines of NFPA 1962, Current Edition. Any physical damage to hose should be addressed immediately. The purpose of the outside hose jacket is functional, but if damaged, the hose should be withdrawn from service. The interior of the hose should also be visually and manually inspected. If damage is evident, hose should be cut back and re-coupled. If the interior damage extends far into the hose, it may be defective. Bring this to the attention of your local distributor or the manufacturer. If hose is re-coupled for any reason, that length must be re-tested before being placed back in service. See NFPA 1962, Current Edition. Couplings Coupling gaskets for threaded or Storz couplings should be replaced when they become hard or cracked. Storz couplings should be lubricated at least twice a year. A dry silicone spray, or other lubricant that will not attract dirt or sand, nor be affected by heat or cold, should be applied to the Storz lugs, locks, and raceway. Do not lubricate the coupling gaskets or seals. 18 w w w . n i e d n e r . c o m I have been selling the Delta Hydro hose testers from Niedner for the past five years. The reason why some manufacturers use nylon in their fire hoses, even though it is slightly more expensive than spun polyester, is that it has a lower specific gravity that means a pound of the material goes further. This alone accounts for about a 10% gain in yield. A Nylon yarn is typically only available in a filament form as compared to the polyester that has been spun into a yarn. In order to approximate the physical dimensions and appearance of spun polyester, the nylon filament is bulked by means of crimping and air entanglement, which enables the same amount of yarn to occupy more space. Filament yarn is quite small in diameter and because of the high strength of the synthetic yarns, one would have to use far more than is structurally necessary just to ensure adequate coverage of the outer circumference of the hose. By bulking up the yarn, less nylon can be used to achieve the same coverage. S U P E R I O R Because the yarn has been bulked it is not very stable and therefore any outside forces that act upon it try to return it to its original form. That is when the problems start to occur. Weaving tension such as that needed in a circular loom is one such force. Once woven, the yarn closely resembles a filament yarn that is very slippery, and does not cling well to itself, therefore resulting in a very flimsy jacket. The filament is also very susceptible to any abrasive objects that can snag and easily cut it. It is for this reason that a nylon hose cannot be obtained without a Hypalon treatment, which acts as a binder holding the whole thing together. P R O D U C T Spun polyester, on the other hand, is physically stable because it was a filament yarn that was cut into staple and then spun into a yarn. There has been no falsification of its dimensions and it therefore remains intact. It also has a very high friction co-efficient between its neighboring yarns, which means that the yarns do not easily slip back and forth between each other, thus resulting in a sturdier jacket. Nylon is hydroscopic in nature. That means it will chemically absorb water into its molecular structure, in the order of ten times higher than polyester. It also accounts for a 10% reduction in physical properties. In other words nylon is weaker when it is wet. The melt temperature for both nylon and polyester is in the 500°F (260°C) range. T H AT ENCAP™ versus HYPALON Dupont developed Hypalon, which is the proprietary name of the Dupont Company, for chlorosulphanated polyethylene for the automotive industry. Its heat, oil, chemical, and abrasion resistance are still today unsurpassed with the exception of some of the new and exotic silicone and flouroelastomers. S U P P O R T S It was these properties that prompted fire hose manufacturers to use Hypalon on fire hose. It exhibited all the properties that fire hose at the time were lacking. The only problem was that the price of the Hypalon polymer was rather high and prohibitive. But like all good rubber compounders knew, the polymer could be mixed with clays, oil extenders and various other fillers. Low and behold, the price per pound was in an acceptable range. It also could be compounded with any number of pigments to give any color under the sun. Now the problem was to find a way to apply Hypalon to the hose jacket. This was accomplished by dissolving roughly 5% compounded rubber into 95% solvent. The jacket was then dipped in the mixture and the solvent driven off. The original Hypalon rubber was now diluted beyond the point where it could hope to be very effective. It did, however, provide a limited degree of penetration and hence some binding of the fibers. It performs best on air-entangled nylon. Because of all the air pockets in this yarn, the mixture does penetrate and bind the yarns together. Without it, the nylon would not stand a chance (could you imagine if we were to put ENCAP™ on this nylon). Y O U The degree of increase in heat resistance was zero, and abrasion and chemical resistance was minimal at that. It was clearly time that Hypalon move over to make way for a more sophisticated encapsulation process, Niedner® ENCAP™. I N ENCAP™ is a spin-off of polyurethane emulsion that was primarily developed for the rope and cable industry for use in marine applications. It was intended to act as a binder to keep the rope together as well as protecting it from the harsh marine environment. Now, compounded specifically for fire hose, it is performing the same duties. S AV I N G Because ENCAP™ is a polyurethane resin, its melting point is roughly the same as that of polyester yarn. It therefore does not offer any significant increase in heat resistance. It does however, encapsulate all the fibers of an already very tightly woven jacket and bind these to the point whereby the abrasion resistance is increased 500% over the untreated version, and 400% over Hypalon impregnated products. The chemical resistance of ENCAP™ is phenomenal. Gasoline and solvents that would strip Hypalon from a hose do not have any effect on ENCAP™ at all. L I V E S In the past, some problems were encountered in that certain colors were fading prematurely. This was a problem with the pigment only. Even with the color completely dissipated, the ENCAP™ resin still remained intact and functional. Today, these problems of fading colors are behind us. The main reason for the poor performance of Hypalon was due to the fact of its being too highly diluted. As compounded, the ENCAP™ emulsion contains roughly 40% solids (2.5% for Hypalon). This is why more resin is being imparted to the hose jacket. This increased amount of resin, as well as its natural ability to resist most disruptive elements, is why ENCAP™ is favored among end users. 26 w w w . n i e d n e r . c o m SPEC SHEET NIEDNER® offers many features which are not readily apparent in a condensed presentation such as this product line catalog. A few of our principal products are outlined in this catalog. Your NIEDNER Regional Sales Managers, Customer Service or Niedner® Distributor will be happy to assist you in learning more about the benefits of our fire hose contained herein or other specially developed products not described here. LINING T.P.U Many of the hose products are made with T.P.U. lining in lieu of the conventional SBR rubber lining. T.P.U. is an elastomeric polymer made from a polyester-polyether compound. NIEDNER® extrudes this lining thus ensuring the tightest quality control. This special fire hose lining compound offers these unique features: * Flexibility at –60°F (-51°C) * Tear strength three times greater than rubber * Maximum resistance to hydrolysis (NL 8103-80) * No plasticizer to weaken adhesion or leach out to cause lining stiffness and cracking * No edge stress cracks as in direct extrusion processes to cause eventual lining failure * Approved for potable water use * Virtually immune to aging and microbial attack * Resistant to pure mineral oil, petroleum, hydrocarbons, most solvents and greases, weathering, ozone and ultra-violet light * Maximum temperature for water flow is approximately 140°F (60°C) * Maximum temperature for hot air flow is approximately 150°F (66°C) E.P.D.M. As an alternative to T.P.U., NIEDNER® also offers a lightweight E.P.D.M. rubber lining that provides comparable weight and compactness to that of T.P.U while at the same time retaining the desirable characteristics of rubber lined hose. Maximum temperature for water flow is of approximately 160°F (71°C). JACKETS NIEDNER ® offers circular woven jackets using cotton, filament polyester or spun polyester yarns woven in either plain (conventional) or bias weaves. Where abrasion is a problem, especially with single jacket hoses, the bias weave is especially designed to increase abrasion resistance by at least 50%. This is accomplished, in part, by the warp yarns offering 50% more coverage of the filler yarns without adding additional material. The outside of the hose can withstand temperatures in the short term of approximately 350°F (176°C) and not to exceed 250°F (121°C) in the long term. TREATMENT ENCAP™ High performance polymeric dispersion. Due to the nature of the polymer and the process by which it is applied, ENCAP™ virtually encapsulates every fiber of the outer jacket substrate thereby imparting superior physical properties such as: * Abrasion resistance gain of 500%¸ * Resistance to pure mineral oils, petroleum, hydrocarbons and most solvents and greases * Virtually immune to fungal growth * Minimal water retention versus untreated hoses * Excellent U.V. resistance * A wide variety of colors: yellow, green, red, blue, clear (white), beige (tan), orange and purple DALCOAT™ and DRAFTKOTE™ High performance outer jacket coatings that when applied offer exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance. These are particularly desirable for industrial applications where damage from abrasion and absorption of contaminants must be kept to a minimum. TESTING Each length of NIEDNER ® double jacket fire hose is guaranteed to be tested, coupled or uncoupled, before leaving the factory. Certifications of these tests are available from the factory upon request. Effective July 1, 1988, all hose is required to be tested in accordance with the most current edition of NFPA 1961. NIEDNER® complies with these guidelines as evidenced by all the products contained in this catalog. FINISHED HOSE Combining modern high-speed looms with the latest lining technology provides a thoughtfully designed hose product with features such as: * 1/3 less storage area * 1/2 product weight * Minimum twist, warp and elongation * Maximum strength to weight ratio * Maximum cold temperature resistance * Flexibility to –60°F (-51°C) * Versatility in product design * Maximum resistance to mildew, deterioration, ozone and cracking * Oversize waterways for increased flow and decreased friction loss while using NFPA compliant couplings w w w . n i e d n e r . c o m 27 28 Acceptance pressure A specified pressure applied to all new hose by the manufacturer determining hose capability to withstand working pressures. Acceptance pressure is twice the annual service pressure. Same as proof pressure. Attack hose Hose used at pressures up to and exceeding 185 psi (1275 kPa), usually 2 1/2” (64 mm) or smaller. Hose designed to be used by trained fire fighters and fire brigade members to combat fires beyond the incipient stage. Coating An impregnation or saturation of woven hose with protective materials so the outside of the jacket is relatively smooth and more abrasion and chemical resistant. Couplings One set or pair of connection devices attached to a fire hose that allow the hose to be interconnected to additional lengths of hose or adapters and other fire-fighting appliances. Hose assembly Hose furnished with couplings attached at each end. Labelled Equipment, materials or services that are labelled or with a tag or symbol to identify a firm that, under authorized jurisdiction involved in the evaluation of a product, maintains periodic inspections of the labelled equipment or material. These labels must comply with manufacturer’s demands and must respect the different specifications and performances in a specific fashion. Lining, EPDM rubber Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer is a synthetic rubber that has excellent inherent resistance to UV and ozone. It extrudes smoothly producing a thinner, flexible lightweight tube. It is slightly thicker than Thermoplastic Urethane Liner but yields a hose only minimally heavier and bulkier. The heavier wall gives slightly better kink resistance than Thermoplastic Urethane lined hoses. Lining, SBR rubber Styrene Butadiene Rubber is a synthetic general-purpose rubber compounded for many uses including hose tubing. It is typically extruded in a thicker wall than EPDM rubber and Thermoplastic Urethane Liner, and hence yields a heavier bulkier hose. The UV and ozone resistance is poor unless specifically compounded for that purpose. The heavier wall imparts better kinking resistance. Lining, T.P.U. Thermoplastic Urethane is a high performance polyurethane elastomer that can be extruded into a very thin-walled tube for use in fire hose. It has a very high tensile strength compared to rubber compounds and has excellent UV and ozone resistance. Remains extremely flexible at low temperatures. It yields an extremely lightweight and compact hose. Listed Equipment, materials, or services included in a list published by an organization that is acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction over and concern about products or services; that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed equipment or materials or periodic evaluation of services; and whose listing states that either the equipment, material, or service meets identified standards or has been tested and found suitable for a specified purpose. Multiple jacketed hose Hose having two or more woven jackets or a covered hose that complies with all of the performance tests in a standard for multiple-jacketed hose. NFPA 1961 National Fire Protection Associations specifications titled “Standard on Fire Hose”. NFPA 1962 National Fire Protection Associations’ specification titled: Standard for the Inspection, Care, and use of Fire Hose, Couplings and Nozzles, and the Service Testing of Fire Hose. Pressure, proof A specified pressure applied to new hose by the manufacturer to indicate its acceptability at intended working pressures. Same as acceptance pressure. Pressure, service test The pressure to which the hose is periodically (annually) tested to determine that it can remain in service. The service test pressure is at least 15 percent greater than the maximum working pressure. Pressure, working The maximum pressure, to which a hose will be subjected, including the momentary surges in pressure that can occur during service. The working pressure is sometimes abbreviated as WP, and is sometimes referred to as Use Pressure (15% lower than service test pressure). PSIG Pounds per square inch gauge pressure. (1 PSIG equal 6.8948 Pa). Supply hose Hose used at pressures below 185 psi (1275 kPa), usually 3 1/2” (89 mm) or larger, to move water from a source to a pumper, or between pumpers. Threaded coupling A coupling or adapter in which the mating is achieved with the use of male and female threads. Warp threads The threads or yarns of a jacket that run lengthwise to the hose. Warp threads protect the filler threads, and handle about 25% of the water pressure. Water hammer A surge of pressure caused when a flow of water is abruptly shut off. The pressure exerted by the flowing water against the closed system can be seven or more times that of the static pressure, and is capable of causing equipment failure and/or personnel injury. Weft (filler) yarn The yarn running circumferentially around the hose. Wye A fitting designed to have one hose line flowing in and two or more hose lines flowing out. w w w . n i e d n e r . c o m Early 1900 Early 1930 Charles Henry Niedner 1837-1908 Albert Louis Niedner William Niedner 1898-1941 1876-1947 Charles Edward Niedner Early 1900 1929- 1997 to this day Niedner traces its origin back to 1895 when Charles Niedner immigrated to North America and began manufacturing linen fire hose in Malden, Massachusetts. In the first half of the 21st century, linen fire hose represented a significant portion of the requirements in forestry and interior fire protection. The Malden plant expanded in size, and business increased to the point where a second manufacturing facility was built in Coaticook, Quebec in 1914. This plant was added to in several stages and finally retired in 1992. During that same year Niedner invested $3,300,000 and built a new manufacturing center. This state of the art facility consists of in excess of 80,000 square feet (7,400 square meters) exclusively devoted to the research, development and manufacturing of rigid and lay flat liquid distribution hoses, destined for both domestic and export production. In 1953 Wajax Limited purchased Niedner. In the early 1970’s when it was evident that the product line was too limited to offer long-term growth, a substantial investment was made in the latest technology which would ensure a viable future in the fire hose industry. The fire hose operations of American Biltrite (Canada) Limited were acquired and a facility was added in York, Pennsylvania. In December 1995, a newly formed company called the Wildfire Group purchased the Fire Control Division of Wajax Limited. In February 2000, Tyco International Inc. purchased the Wildfire Group. Niedner purchased the hose tester portion of Delta Industries in May of 2001 and commenced manufacturing of the hose testers in June of that same year. The commitment of Tyco will ensure the continued growth and dedication to our present and future customer needs. The total of these changes permits Niedner to offer a wide range of products in both traditional woven-jacketed, rubber-lined fire hose and lightweight, polyurethane lined hose that Niedner pioneered in North America. These lightweight products have now been manufactured for over thirty years and represent a major portion of Niedner’s production. Features such as weight reduction, reduced storage space, flexibility at extremely low temperatures and an increased strength-to-weight ratio have allowed Niedner to become a major supplier to the forestry, municipal, industrial, interior protection, government and snowmaking markets. An ongoing commitment to the development of new products and manufacturing methods guarantees Niedner will be recognized for years to come as a world leader in the hose industry. w w w . n i e d n e r . c o m PORTFOLIO DESIGN 819-847-0388 NIEDNER DELTA HYDRO For more information please call your authorized dealer.
