Voyager also leads the House point league and took the House of the Term trophy. Christmas Showcase A very pleasant and enjoyable evening was had by all at our Christmas Showcase on Thursday evening. Students from across all years took to the stage to bring some Christmas cheer with a variety of music, dance, drama and readings. The Senior Singers opened the evening with ‘‘For Your Glory’, a traditional gospel arrangement. The evening continued with a Beatles classic ‘Come Together’ from the KS4 Band followed by the Step Into Dance crew performing a ‘Festive Groove’. It was very much a variety show with a Christmas theme and wonderful to see unusual acts such as the Ukulele Club who performed ‘Jingle Bells’ and the Guitar Club who performed Bob Marley’s ‘Three Little Birds’. One of the highlights of the evening was our very own Kymbali Williams who sang her own arrangement of ‘Winter Wonderland’ accompanied by Michah Congo-Nyah a highly accomplished guitarist. The duo were met with a thunderous appreciation from the audience. Well done to everyone, it was an evening of talent underlined with Christmas spirit. Forensics in Action Year 11 Applied Science participated in a forensic workshop led by Emma Harrison from the MET Police, Wandsworth. She took the students through her career pathway and explained a ‘day in the life a crime officer’. The workshop gave a very interesting insight into this area of policing although sometimes shocking. The students can now use the information to produce their work related report controlled assessment. University Challenge Science Champions Well done to 8T5 and Challenger House for winning this year’s competition by a total of 85 points to 60. The winning team worked well together to overtake their opponents, 8T3, in the last round with their speedy answers and their impressive scientific knowledge. Hosted by our very own quiz mistress extraordinaire Ms Karoune who sped through the questions in traditional University Challenge style. It was an excellent competition from start to finish – thank you to all of the many teams and students who took part this year. Intrepid winners were Arslan Aftab, Jonaid Ahmed, Morgan Wroe, and George Somers. Living for Sports Many thanks to Steve Brown, Captain of the GB Paralympic Wheelchair Rugby team at London 2012 who came to Ashcroft yesterday with Jon Boyton, the GB Sprint Kayaker to work a group of selected Year 9 students through team building activities. Jon and Steve worked with the students to build up their confidence starting with a simple ball throwing and catching exercise and ending with a very energetic basketball type match. The ‘can do’ attitude of Steve Brown was truly inspirational and the students were quite in awe of his ball skills and outgoing personality. Both Jon and Steve portray the same message which is to show young people what can be achieved if you set your mind to it. Well done also to the second placed 8T1 team: Sadeed Ahmed, Shahzad Hashmi, Deshae Pascoe, Hashir Rana – you put up a good fight! With no lights and no way of navigating, the probe is aimlessly drifting through space. They needed to get the power back on! Our stemmies worked hard to construct series and parallel circuits, using batteries, bulbs, wires and switches. The space probe was powered back up and continued on its way across the galaxies! IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YEAR 11 ART & DESIGN STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS Year 11 Art & Design students will be given their EDEXCEL external examination paper the week beginning January 5 2015. Year 7 and 8 Multicultural Event Join us on the 22 January between 1.10pm – 1.45 pm in the Auditorium for a fun filled Multicultural event open to Year 7 and 8 students. Our aim is to hold activities to give our students an increased awareness and understanding of the variety of cultures that exist within the Academy. On the day there will be stalls which will allow you to experience other cultures’ Food, Art and Music. The restaurant will also be providing a variety of dishes which reflect our community. We are a group of Year 11 Citizenship students who are attempting to raise awareness of Community Cohesion as a result of completing a piece of coursework. With our ’Say hello to your neighbour this Christmas’ and ‘Mind the Social Gap’ slogans we aim to spread the word that a secluded society is not always the best way forward. Therefore we would ask that you support this event through attendance at the session if you are a student. If you are a parent we are hoping for donations of food. Ashcroft Academy is incredibly diverse and many of our students have a variety of cultural backgrounds with many traditional dishes. This is of course optional but if you would like to contribute please make contact at the following address: [email protected]. Any donations would be greatly appreciated. Further details of the event will be sent out in the New Year, but it will only happen with our school community working together. So say hello to your neighbour this Christmas and Mind the Social Gap. Regards Eshe Barzey, Caprice Vannucci, Julia Jarnot, Brandon De Shong Charles, Nazeema Ishmael ‘Powering Our Future Planet’ – A Royal Society Christmas Lecture Thirty Year 8 pupils were nominated by their teachers to attend this special lecture by Sir David King at the Royal Society. Sir David is the permanent Special Representative for Climate Change. He has served as the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor from 2000 – 2007, during which time he raised awareness of the need for governments to act on climate change and was instrumental in creating the Energy Technologies Institute. He also served as the Founding Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and Environment at Oxford; was Head of the Department of Chemistry at Cambridge University 1993-2000 and Master of Downing College at Cambridge 1995 -2000. Sir David flew in from Lima, Peru where he has been a key part of the Global Climate Change Conference which ended on Sunday. He is very keen to engage younger students to think about the future in terms of energy and begin to address the energy crisis by choosing to study and work in science with a view to creating solutions for the problems of diminishing fossil fuel reserves and its impact on global climate. It was an interesting lecture and he showed us some current ideas such as using helium filled blimps with on board compressors and covered in solar panels with battery backup as a new negative carbon mode of air transport. It is currently being looked at in terms of freight movement but will expand to carry passengers as well. The focus of the lecture was extending a classroom concept into a real life problem affecting this generation’s future and the need to begin to think about how they can make a difference in terms of career choice as well as individual action. We took part in a timeline challenge and one of our students won a prize for correctly indentifying 1955 as the year electric kettles became available to buy. We were disappointed that we did not win the “big” prize of an ipad for the school for correctly guessing how many suitcases (20kg capacity) of CO2 were generated by a family a year – we went with 50 which turned out to be an aspirational figure as 2012 statistics showed it was actually 500! Science Work of the Week Riham Abdul Aziz if the WoW winner this week for her excellent AfL task on Environmental Chemistry.
