The In-House Lawyer and Outside Counsel Relationship Getting to “Yes” and Past “No”
Erik A. Muelle, Senior Counsel
Avila Rodriguez Hernandez Mena & Ferri LLP, Coral Gables, FL
The success of lawyers at firms often hinges on the hiring decisions made by the general
counsel or in-house counsel. As a result, outside counsel devote time and resources to
cultivating relationships with general counsel and other in-house lawyers. This roundtable
discussion will examine who decides to hire outside counsel and the factors impacting
that decision. Our panelists will address why general counsel choose one lawyer or firm
over another; how lawyers can foster genuine relationships with in-house counsel; what
lawyers can do to distinguish themselves once they are hired; and reasons why general
counsel “fire” outside counsel. Join us for a spirited discussion with a panel of high-profile
general counsel discussing the interplay between corporate law departments and firms and
its impact on the careers of individual lawyers.
