Augustana will not host Free School
Following leadership change, music school in negotiations to stay
By DASCHELL M. PHILLIPS
Staff Writer
The Chicago Free School will
not be moving to Augustana
Lutheran Church of Hyde Park in
January as planned. The church is
currently in negotiations with its
current resident program The Hyde
Park Suzuki Institute to remain in
place.
The Chicago Free School, a
private school where everything is
decided by community consensus,
was expected to open its doors this
fall at its new permanent location
in Augustana, 5500 S. Woodlawn
Ave., but were told by inspectors
that upgrades needed to be made to
the church to meet fire code
standards for a school. The school
had to quickly relocate to the Hyde
Park Neighborhood Club (HPNC)
5480 S. Kenwood Ave., until all
the upgrades were complete,
which was expected to be January,
2015.
Lauren Beitler, founder of The
Chicago Free School, said the
school would no longer be moving
to the church.
“The cost of construction was
going to be too expensive and our
budget couldn’t support that in its
first year,” Beitler said.
She said the school will remain at
the HPNC until the end of the year
and will explore new options,
including remaining at the club,
for its 2015-2016 school year.
Lucinda Ali Landing, founder of
The Hyde Park Suzuki Institute, a
longstanding music program that
was going to be evicted from the
church, said the institute is
currently in negotiation with
Augustana’s new leadership to
determine if its month-to-month
lease agreement can become a
more “standard, permanent” lease
agreement.
“Around Thanksgiving weekend,
Suzuki
was
informed
by
Augustana leadership that the
Chicago Free School would not
enter into a lease agreement with
Augustana,” Ali Landing said. “We
had a wonderful meeting with the
new church leadership. They
invited us to extend our stay.”

New parkland proposed
Lasting tradition
By LINDSAY WELBERS
Staff Writer
The Chicago Park District is considering
adding 10 to 15 acres of parkland to the
area along the lakeshore path.
The CPD and Chicago Department of
Transportation are seeking public input
regarding needed revetments along the
Morgan Shoal area, from 45th Street to 51st
Street.
A revetment proposal, discussed at the
Mandrake Park Fieldhouse, 3858 S.
Cottage Grove Ave., last Monday, would
raise the lakefront park by three feet. That
stretch of parkland currently sits about 12
feet above sea level.
Raising it three feet higher would help
protect the shoreline, path and Lake Shore
Drive, when another storm like the
Halloween windstorm that damaged the
path blows through.

Hyde Parker approved as city treasurer
By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL
Staff Writer
Chicago’s new treasurer is a Hyde Parker
with a campaign based in the neighborhood.
Goldman Sachs veteran and Harvard
Business School graduate Kurt Summers,
35, was appointed by Mayor Rahm
Emanuel last October just two days after
Stephanie Neely announced her resignation.
Three weeks after being approved by City
Council, on Dec. 1, the political newcomer
celebrated his new job with a reception at
his campaign headquarters at the Del Prado,
5307 S. Hyde Park Blvd.
“This is the first time I’ve ever run for
anything, outside of student body,”
Summers said in a recent interview at his
campaign headquarters. “Electoral politics
is all new for me.”
Summers’ transition from serving as
Senior Vice President of asset management
firm Grosvenor Capital Management to
public office has been a fast and busy one.
So far, he’s pledged to make trips to the
city’s 77 community areas in 77 days as part
of a campaign effort dubbed “77 in 77.”
At the same time, he said he has been
attending meetings to “make a dent” on the
city’s roughly $20 billion in pension debt
by cutting fees paid to managers of multiple
public employee retirement funds.
According to Summers — who is running
unopposed — the decision to open his
campaign headquarters three blocks away
from his home was not only convenient but
also
historically
significant.
His
grandfather, Sam Patch, was a close friend
of and political strategist for late Mayor
Harold Washington, a nearby resident.
“As a citywide candidate and someone
who is from the community, and whose
grandfather was a close friend of Mayor
Washington — someone I called uncle
Harold — it’s special and significant to me,
to have that close connection to where he
lived and where he operated out of.”
Summers, who moved from Bronzeville to
Hyde Park while attending Whitney Young
High School, also has ties to other area
politicians.

succeeded Stephanie Jaeger, who resigned
from her role as pastor of Augustana.
Before the offer to remain at Augustana,
Ali Landing and her board members were
still searching for a new location in Hyde
Park that would be suitable to the needs of
her music students.
“We found lots of beautiful spaces in
Hyde Park. The problem was going to be
being able to afford the space,” said Ali

between 2010 and 2013 showcased such
bands as The Family Stone and War and
attracted tens of thousands of visitors.
Unlike the Celebrate Hyde Park summer
festival, the event wouldn’t take place on the
street, according to chamber Executive
Director Wallace Goode.
“We have pretty much committed that
we’re not going to close down any street to
make this happen,” Goode said.
The George Franklin Memorial Concert
Series could count as the committee’s
summer music festival, according to Goode.

“Storms like that haven’t happened since
the mid- to late-’80s, probably,” said Bob
Foster, project manager with CPD. “Certain
areas of the lakefront bike trail were closed
off for about a week. Waves came through
there, they ripped up asphalt, threw it back
in the lake, stones were almost at Lake
Shore Drive.”
The Morgan Shoal is a glacially created
bedrock outcropping just six feet beneath
Lake Michigan’s surface. The shoal acts as
a natural barrier for the lakeshore and helps
to create the pebble beach.
The lake is currently about two feet
shallower than its height in the 1970s and
1980s.
Paul Wiese, vice president of

project, said the revetment wants to prepare

Ali Landing said she and the board

which was founded by Nichols Park
Advisory Council President Stephanie
Franklin’s husband in 1995.
But even if the committee’s planned event
is something bigger, it will likely remain in
Nichols Park, according to Goode.
“The goal will be, we will host some kind
of summer music event,” Goode said.
SECC Executive Director Wendy Walker
Williams said the committee is in the early
stages of planning for the next year and is
“not ruling anything out.”
“We are thinking about a summer music
festival, but cannot confirm any details yet,”
Williams said.

Bob Fioretti, mayoral candidate, warms up to Hyde Park
By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL
Staff Writer
Bob Fioretti is staking political positions to
the left of Mayor Rahm Emanuel —
including on Hyde Park issues — as the 2nd
Ward alderman’s campaign to unseat him
heats up.
Fioretti, a supporter of Bronzeville activist
Jay Travis last spring during her primary bid
against state Rep. Christian Mitchell (D-26),
is seen as a leading progressive challenger in
the 2015 mayoral race.
Fioretti has distanced himself from
Emanuel in a number of ways, including by
Vineyard Church
Hyde Park
calling for a moratorium on new tax
increment financing (TIF) projects. Fioretti
stressed that TIFs should be used in blighted
areas — not places like 53rd Street, where
the University of Chicago’s (U. of C.) Harper
Court project was subsidized with $23
million in TIF funds.
“I think things could have been handled
without using taxpayer assisted money on
this,” said Fioretti, who cited tax incentives
and credits as alternative ways to spur
development.
“Our TIF program has siphoned off so
much money from paying for our schools,
our parks, our first responders,” he added. “It
has helped create the financial problems that
we have here in this city.”
Fioretti admitted that he hasn’t thoroughly
examined the issue of the U. of C. police
department’s patrol of 37th through 64th
streets, but said that the private force should
be subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
He added that although he has called for
hiring more police officers, “we can’t police
ourselves out of the problems that we have.
We need to reopen our mental health clinics.
We need a very active and robust, aggressive
CAPS system, community policing system.”
On bringing an adult trauma center to the
South Side — an issue Emanuel has been
silent on — Fioretti said one is “absolutely”
needed and he would do “whatever it takes”
to help get one here. He said he thinks the U.
of C. is reluctant to open one and that the city
needs to make it easier for them to do it.
“I’ve always been in favor of bringing a
trauma center,” he said. “We need one on the
South Side.”
He added that he would meet with the
grassroots Trauma Center Coalition that is
pushing the U. of C. to open a level 1 adult
trauma center.

A voting rights victory Locals blast CPS on Dyett RFP
By STATE REP. BARBARA FLYNN CURRIE (D-25)
I am thrilled that the General Assembly approved my measure to
provide an election day fail-safe for Illinois voters. When Gov. Pat
Quinn signs Senate Bill 172, our citizens will be able to register and vote
in their home precincts on every election day starting
in 2015.
Last spring we approved Election Day registration
but only for the Nov. 4, 2014 election. The
experiment was a success. People did sign up and
they did vote. Unfortunately, there were very long
lines at the few locations where same-day
opportunities were available. Those lines won’t be a
problem going forward, as voters will be able to
register and vote in their own precincts.
I’m proud that Illinois will join the 12 other states
State Rep.
that offer Election Day registration. Those states
include our neighbors Iowa and Wisconsin, states Barbara Flynn
Currie (D-25)
that generally have higher voter participation rates
than we do.
The election bill also expands early voting opportunities. And it will
sign us up to participate in the Electronic Registration Information
Center and the National Change of Address database. With these tools,
election authorities can keep better track of voter eligibility and make
sure voters who move have an easy way to register to vote at their new
address.
Voting rights are fundamental to our system of democratic governance.
Expanding access to the ballot is critical to ensuring that each of us can
exercise our right to vote.

water could raise by another two or three feet in the future.
Building the lakefront three feet higher and about 75 feet into the lake,
would help to prevent against flooding along the nearby road.
“We might be able to create more recreational opportunities in this
narrow band between the lakeshore and the lakefront,” Wiese said.
Ideas included adding snorkeling to visit the Silver Spray, a ship that
sank on Morgan Shoal in 1914. The wreckage can be seen from the shore
when the water is low and is a popular spot among divers.
A 2006 plan that would have built a peninsula on top of the wreckage
was scrapped.
Another public meeting will be scheduled in late January.
Construction is not expected until at least 2017.

Chicago Public Schools (CPS) issued a Request for
Proposal (RFP) Friday for a new high school in the
current Dyett High School building. The Coalition to
Revitalize Dyett High School said the type of school
CPS is seeking to put in place is not the right fit for the
community.
In its RFP, CPS states that it is looking for proposals
that will allow it to operate the school or make it a
contract school to open in the 2016-17 school year.
CPS is not seeking proposals from charter schools.
Other criteria for the Dyett building, 555 E. 51st St.,
include providing a program which engages its
students and also meets the needs of the local
community and embody the five pillars that CPS
believes help increase graduation rates, academic
preparedness for college, and helps in both career and
life.
“Members of the community have expressed a
strong interest in a new school at the Dyett site and we
look forward to working with the community to
develop a new high-quality option for students living
in the neighborhood,” said CPS CEO Barbara ByrdBennett in a written statement. “We are committed to
ensuring the new neighborhood school at Dyett meets
the community’s needs and will evaluate proposals
from all interested parties.”
Jitu Brown, education organizer for the Kenwood
Oakland Community Organization and the Coalition
to Revitalize Dyett High School, said CPS is still not
listening to the community.

Hyde Park Cats are meowing now
By LINDSAY WELBERS
Staff Writer
Hyde Park Cats recently achieved a 501(c)(3)
status, making it a tax-deductible nonprofit
organization.
The group has placed more than 500 felines in
permanent homes since its founding in 2008. It traps
and gives medical care, including spaying or
neutering, to feral or abandoned cats in Hyde Park.
Cats that would be better suited as pets are put in a
foster home until a permanent owner is found. Those
that are better suited to a life outdoors are released
back where they were found.
“Some of the cats go back onto the street and we
use our funds to help feed the feral populations,” said
founding member and treasurer Mary Jean Kraybill.
“The major expense is medical cost for cats in foster
care who come to us with serious medical issues.”
Every cat is spayed or neutered, which the
organization pays a discounted $65 to have done.
They also receive vaccinations, microchips and care
for any other medical problem they may have.
“We do our very best to help every cat that comes
across our door and some of the cases that come in
the door are really daunting in terms of what needs to
be done,” Kraybill said.
Having 501(c)(3) status means that donations to
Hyde Park Cats can be tax-deductible, increasing the
number of people who might consider donating to
the organization.
“We have a lot of people who care about our work
and that will help them help us,” said Terren Wein,
founding member and president.
In 2008, Kraybill and Wein began caring for a
colony of feral cats, one of many across the city,
living near their homes. They provided food and had
each cat fixed.
Programs, like the one run by Hyde Park Cats, give
people the tools and support to trap feral cats near
their homes and have them spayed or neutered before
returning them to the area they came from.
Putting an end to the cats’ abilities to reproduce
limits their numbers, curbs unwanted behaviors —
like midnight yowling — and keeps them from
straining their resources through overpopulation.
In return a well-controlled colony of feral cats can
keep a neighborhood’s pest population in control.

In 2012, CPS voted to phase out Dyett

Brown said the reopening of Dyett is a
testament to the parents, students and

when the response is to sell the school to a

“We are going to submit a proposal letting

Brown said the coalition is against contract

Brown said.

a study and changes regarding racial and
cultural diversity, as well as sexual assault
and violence on campus.
In response to student and faculty
demands the administration will conduct
two “campus climate surveys,” convene a
Diversity Advisory Council and sponsor
an event during winter quarter to discuss
the broader issues of diversity and
inclusion.
“The diversity and inclusion issues we
face as a society are significant, with
multiple, deep, historical roots that reach
into the present. They are important for
every institution to address, including
universities. For our University, inclusion
has an additional fundamental significance
because of our commitment to a culture of
rigorous and open inquiry, which demands
a rich mix of perspectives, experiences,
and backgrounds,” the letter read.
The first of two surveys will “examine
the climate with regard to sexual
misconduct and sexual assault.” It is
expected to be completed by June.
Another survey “will focus on diversity,
inclusion
and
the
climate
for
underrepresented groups.” It will be
completed as soon as possible, but after
the survey on sexual violence. Planning
has begun for that survey.
The Diversity Advisory Council will
include members of the student body and
faculty. Adam Green, professor in the
Department of History, will act as chair
and report to Isaacs and Zimmer.
Green will coordinate with William
McDade, provost for Research and
Minority Issues.
The council will advise regarding broad
approaches and specific further steps to
increase the diversity of the faculty,
students and staff. It can also make
recommendations on programming and
educational opportunities.
More information regarding the
discussions scheduled for winter quarter
will be made available at a later time.
“It is crucial that we continue to cultivate
a campus climate that welcomes talented
faculty, students, and staff of all
backgrounds, and that we attack bias,
discrimination, and harassment that can
threaten that culture and the individuals
within it,” the letter said.

The main work on the program was

Beethoven himself once described as “one
of my best works.” Richard Wagner
observed that it is the “apotheosis of the
dance.”
The first movement established that
Honeck is adept with rhythmic expression,
always using the dotted rhythms to propel
the music forward. He conducted with a
light touch, contrasting strong sound with
moments full of light and air.
The funereal rhythms of the “Allegretto”
were rendered with skill and the repetitions
given organic growth. The richly dark
music was at times exquisitely quiet, then
slowly building to dramatic climaxes.
The rollicking “Presto” was bright and
well punctuated and the rapid movement
from pianissimo to fortissimo was thrilling.
The final movement, imbued with color
and splendid definition, moved along at a
gripping pace. There were boisterous
whirlwinds of complex rhythmic activity
with an exciting triple forte (the first time

The concert opened with Haydn’s
Symphony No. 93 in D Major. The opening
movement showed great attention to
contrasts while the second drew out the
humorous moments. Quiet passages grew
into blustery declarations, thanks to the
bassoon.
The souring sounds of the “Menuetto”
were charming and the final movement was
elegant, with lovely legatos and punchy
staccatos.
Also on the program was the Strauss tone
poem “Don Juan.” It opened with energy
and punch with Honeck leading the
orchestra in an exuberant performance.
Concertmaster Robert Chen offered a
luscious solo and the brass were bold and
brash. The orchestra moved easily from the
poignant to the urgent, always holding the
attention of the audience.

ith all the accolades I heard heaped
on The Ruffians’ “Burning
Bluebeard” last year, I expected to
be blown away by the reprise of the show
about the 1903 Iroquois Theatre fire. But
while the concept is brilliant, and some of
the execution is riveting, Jay Torrence’s
script would benefit from judicious editing,
and Halena Kays’ direction could be toned
down in sections.
Still, the piece, which originated with
the Neo-Futurists in 2011 and is as much
performance art as play, taps into a basic
human impulse. Who does not long for
the chance to revisit a tragic event and
give it a happy ending? And what are the
purposes, possibilities and limitations of
art in the face of such a crisis?
Torrence, who also portrays Iroquois
stage manager Robert Murray, and the
ensemble of five actors playing clowns
playing real performers on that fateful day,
Dec. 30, 1903, tackle the tale in an
innovative way designed to immerse us in
the experience. After Murray offers an
introduction touching on the cause of the
fire — a moonlight effect doomed by faulty
wiring — we watch the others emerge from
body bags on Dan Broberg’s stunning set
of the burned-out theater (which was on the
site of the Oriental Theatre, built in 1926)
complete with frayed red-velvet curtains
and electrical flaws.
Reminiscent of the characters in “Six
Characters in Search of An Author,” they
are ghosts determined — or doomed — to
relive the final performance, a matinee of
the pantomine “Mr. Bluebeard,” in the
desperate hope of getting it right, so that
the packed house of mostly mothers and
children go home happy rather than 600 of
them being killed by one of history’s most
disastrous fires. Combining music (much
of it anachronistic), dance, clowning,
mime, circus techniques and audience
participation, they interweave scenes from
the fairytale “Mr. Bluebeard,” which
involved 400 performers, with factual and
fictional details of what happened that
afternoon. The tension mounts as the
urgency of averting the disaster of the Act
II moonlight scene gets closer.
The plot of the panto, which is about the
evil potentate Bluebeard (Anthony
Courser playing Henry Gilfoil) who
murders his wives, ingeniously connects
with the actors’ desires. When Bluebeard
discovers his latest wife has entered the
secret room holding the others’ bodies
against his orders and is about to murder
her, the Faerie Queen (Molly Plunk) —
there’s always a Faerie Queen in
Christmas pantos, we’re told —
intervenes, just as the actors want her to
save everyone from the fire.
Instead, we learn how a series of wellmeaning actions made matters worse.
Convinced the fire curtain would come
down and do its job, the famous comedian
Eddie Foy (Ryan Walters) urged the
audience members in the balcony to
return to their seats and stay calm, which
they did. But when Murray got the stage
door open so the performers could escape,
the rush of cold air into the theater sent a
massive fireball directly their way. On the
other hand, one of the only performers to
die was Nellie Reed (Leah Urzendowski),
an aerialist who poignantly tells us how
she was locked into her rigging high
above the stage awaiting her big scene in
which she flew out into the audience
scattering rose petals over their heads.
As events move towards the inevitable
climax, masterfully evoked by sound
designer Mike Tutaj, the Fancy Clown
(new cast member Pam Chermansky)
increasingly emerges as the malevolent
one whose notion of leaving us with
something “memorable” is deeply
disturbing. Dressed in costume designer
Lizzie Bracken’s singed, torn, white-satin
clown suit, with her malicious whitefaced sneer, she’s in stark contrast to
Plunk’s mute Faerie Queen in tattered
chiffon, a lithe contortionist with a
beatific smile.
The beginning and ending of “Burning
Bluebeard” give me the most pause,
though parts of the middle are a bit
confusing. After the dramatic opening,
there’s a long, repetitive section with a lot
of frantic activity and shouting that sets
up what’s going to happen but basically is
unnecessary. The actors behave like little
kids rather than their characters;
Torrence, for example, flicks on a
cigarette lighter to suggest the
conflagration to come — and does this
three times, in case we don’t get the
point. The manic tone doesn’t make
sense, and I wondered briefly if the whole
evening was going to be like that.
I’m more ambivalent about the ending,
because there seem to be several of them.
I won’t give it away, and my companion
insisted that it has to be the way it is, but
being something of a pessimist, I’m not
so sure.
One thing is for certain, though,
“Burning Bluebeard” is the most unusual
holiday show around. It’s also a vivid
reminder of a low point in Chicago
history — including plenty of corruption,
political and otherwise — and certainly
worth seeing for its striking theatricality.

Curator at Logan Center returning to European roots
By JEFFREY BISHKU-AYKUL
Staff Writer
After two years serving as the Logan
Center’s inaugural visual arts program
curator, Monika Szewczyk is leaving the
University of Chicago for Athens, Greece.
Szewczyk will join a panel of curators for
a
2017
European
exhibition
of
contemporary art, “Documenta 14.” During
her time at the Logan Center, 915 E. 60th
St., she curated and co-curated around 10
shows, ending with “Szalon,” an exhibit of
works playing off the meanings of the word
in Polish (“crazy”) and in Hungarian
(“salon”), as well as Hebrew’s similarsounding “Shalom” (“peace”).
As in “Szalon,” Szewczyk’s shows often
featured seemingly disparate works defying
a strict, overarching theme.
Logan Center curator Monika Szewczyk.
Spencer Bibbs
“There was never a prescription from the
people who hired me of what I was supposed
to do,” Szewczyk said. “And that was part of
the really attractive aspect of the job.”
Szewczyk said she sought to convey in her
work the feel of a “curatorial studio,”
likening her style to that of a studio, which
she said is in flux and open to a wider range
of interpretation. The Logan Center did this,
according to her, by hosting opening
receptions weeks after a show was unveiled
or by curating a dynamic exhibit such as last
winter’s “The Fifth Dimension,” in which
new artworks would appear over time.
“I think that if things make sense too
quickly, then we don’t actually process them,
or use them to understand the complexity of
the world,” Szewczyk said. “I think art is
there to provide a stumbling block to the
automatic way of thinking.”
But for Szewczyk, it was not only the
Logan Center shows that defined her time
here: The globetrotter’s two years as a
Woodlawn resident was her first experience
living in the United States.
A Poland native, Szewczyk saw firsthand
the emergence of the Solidarity movement,
and then moved at age 10 to Vancouver,
where she watched Communism collapse
from afar as a high school student. She
stayed there to attend college and graduate
school, and was a curator at the Vancouver
Art Gallery before moving to Europe, where
she edited publications for the Witte de With
Center for Contemporary Art while in
Brussels, Berlin and Rotterdam.
“I was a great fan of Obama, and I was
aware of the mythos of this place,” Szewczyk
said of her move to the South Side of
Chicago.
She added that it was “a profound decision,
because it really helped to shape how I
understand Chicago and how I understand
the United States.”
