Prayer for Families
Loving God,
During this holy season of Christmas, we ask for your blessing on all families.
Let Mary’s openness to your wondrous ways be an inspiration to place all trust in you.
Let Joseph’s courage provide hope during times of anxiety and uncertainty.
Let Jesus’ life ignite all families with a spirit of light and love.
May the grace that encircled the Holy Family widen to embrace all families.
For this we pray.
Amen

Dear Parishioners,
The Sunday following Christmas is always dedicated to the Holy Family. The gospel for this feast is from
Luke where the infant Jesus is presented in the Temple
according to Jewish custom. Simeon praises and thanks
God for the Messiah who has come. He predicts the
child’s future as well as the sorrow from his life that will
pierce his mother’s heart. Even the Holy Family had its
ups and downs. As the gospels of Matthew and Luke tell
us there seemed to be more downs than ups at the beginning.
Five of our twenty-five Emil Frei stained glass
windows are of different moments in the life of the Holy
Family. Three windows are of happiness and two of fear
or sorrow. See if you can identify them the next time you
are in Church.
All these windows tell a story of a life that
changed the world. These windows tell a story of a God
who so loved the world, He took on human flesh to dwell
among us. These windows tell a story of a God who suffered like we suffer, who rejoices like we rejoice, but
loves more perfectly than we do.
These windows are a great gift to the family of St.
Michael of every generation. With their pallet of vibrant
colors each window contributes to the story of our salvation. We posthumously thank the families who in 1920
contributed approximately $25,000 to make these windows a reality as well as Fr. Fullerton’s vision.
Today I thank the families who are the Basilica of
St. Michael today. The families who worship here Sunday
after Sunday, the families who support the parish with
their treasure according to their means, the families who
support the parish with their time and the families who
support the parish with their talents. How many of you are
involved in some aspect of the Sunday Mass celebration
whether it is singing, reading, Eucharistic ministry, sacristans, the “holy wash” or Church readiness, how many of
you are responsible for the weekly post-Mass coffees and
menus, how many of you are active Knights of Columbus
or active in Our Lady’s Sodality, how many of you are
involved in our Finance and Pastoral Advisory Councils,
how many of you are involved with our education of children, how many of you have responded to parish work
days? I could go on and on, but the bottom line is, like
Simeon in the gospel, I praise and thank God for all who
are the Holy Family of the Basilica of St. Michael.
May we always be willing to share the love God
has for each of us with and in our Basilica family.
Blessed Christmas season & Happy New Year,
Father Joe Callipare
