Letter to Sen. Baldwin.
The Honorable Tammy Baldwin United States Senator 717 Hart Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 via email Dear Senator Baldwin, As you may be aware, this spring 38 members of the Wisconsin Legislature wrote officials at the United States Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) to register concerns about the proposed rule for new residential wood heaters. The letter is attached for your review. To date, no response from the EPA has been received regarding this matter. The concerns in the preceding letter are serious to thousands of our constituents who rely on wood burning stoves as the primary means of heating their homes. With the winter just beginning, it is our hope that the EPA would heed the concerns of Wisconsinites and withdraw the proposed rule. Further, the hypocrisy of the proposed rule in further regulating heat providing wood stoves, while exempting inefficient and higher polluting fireplaces is nothing short of astonishing. No one debates that the proposed rule will substantially increase the cost of residential wood stoves and place a greater financial burden on Wisconsinites seeking to save money by heating with wood. It is our hope that you will stand up for our mutual constituents and advocate that this harmful rule be withdrawn immediately. We ask that you provide us an update from EPA officials relating to our concerns. We further ask that you provide us with your position on this harmful rule and provide us with an explanation as to why the EPA would further regulate wood stoves which so many rely upon, but to not extend that rule to fireplaces that heat much less and pollute much more. We appreciate your attention to this matter and we look forward to your prompt response.
