Sensex up 33 pts, HDFC, Sesa
Sterlite among big gainers
MUMBAI, DEC 26 /—/ In
volatile
trade,
the
benchmark BSE Sensex
Friday rose by 33 points to
close the day at 27,241.78,
mainly helped by gains in
HDFC, Sesa Sterlite, Infosys
and TCS, amidst lack of
fresh market cues.
The BSE index resumed
higher on beginning of
January series in the
derivatives segment. It
gradually started to slip due
to foreign capital outflows.
Later, it wiped off losses
completely and settled the
day at 27,241.78, a rise of
33.17 points or 0.12 per cent,
breaking two days of losses.
In previous two sessions,
Sensex had shed 493.18
points. The 50-share NSE
Nifty after falling to the
day’s low of 8,147.95 staged
a strong comeback to regain
the 8,200-mark to close at
8,200.70, up 26.60 points
from its previous close.
“Lack of market cues
both
globally
and
domestically and liquidity
drench owing to festive
season in the West kept
markets sideways for the
day,” said Rakesh Goyal,

Jaitley asks taxmen
to be ‘firm and fair’
NEW DELHI, DEC 26 /—/
Asking the new Indian
Revenue Service officers to
be ‘firm and fair’ in tax
collection,
Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley
Friday said a taxman’s job
does not involve giving any
concessions or discounts.
“Your job in the matter
of tax collection has to be
guided by firmness and
fairness. A taxman’s job is
mixed, he has to be firm and
he has to be fair. There are
no discounts or concession
which he is entitled to
give,” Jaitley said.
Speaking at an event to
inaugurate the Professional
Training of the 66th batch
of IRS (Customs & Central
Excise) probationers here,
Jaitley also asked the new
officers to maintain a fine
balance between what taxes
are to be charged and what
not. “... it is your
responsibility to see tax laws
are implemented strictly.
Whatever tax is chargeable
is being charged and what is
not chargeable is not
charged. It is this fine
balance which you have to
make,” Jaitley said.
Noting
that
the
government is not an easy
place to work, the Finance
Minister advised young
Indian Revenue Services
officers to do things which
effectively pass ethics of
morality.
